Born Ruth Evelyn Baker on June 16, 1911, in East Burke, Vt., she was the daughter of the late Burdette and Gertrude (Parker) Baker. Ruth was the wife of the late Kermit E. Grant, who passed away in 1999. She had two sons, Stephen of Lyons, Colo., and Tim of Arizona, both of whom survive her. Her very early years were spent on the family farm in East Burke, but most of her childhood and young adult life were spent in Lyndon Center. Ruth attended Lyndon Institute and Lyndon State College, where she earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education. She began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse and spent most of her career teaching the second and sixth grades at Lyndonville Graded School. She also taught in St. Johnsbury for a few years. Upon retiring, Ruth and Kermit spent summers at their camp on Lake Willoughby and winters in Tucson, Ariz. When the trip between Vermont and Arizona became too difficult, they settled in Tucson, where Ruth remained until Kermit's death. She then moved to Boulder to be near her son, Steve, who visited her daily and often read short stories and poetry about Vermont to her. Wherever she lived, Ruth was always proud of her Vermont heritage. She always carried a bottle of Vermont maple syrup in her purse, and continued to carry it in her walker when she moved to a nursing home. Her son kept her supplied with it till the end. She would often smile quietly and say "Good ole' Vermont" when Steve read to her during her last years. In addition to her two sons, Ruth is survived by her dear sister, Beulah Vaught of Long Beach, Calif.; her sisters-in-law Sarah Mayer of Riverside, Calif., and Harriet Grant of Lyndonville, Vt.; three grandchildren; two great-grand children; and two nephews.
