Kay (Suellyn) Whittington

, Spa Nyitso (Patience Sun Lake, her Buddhist name), of St. Johnsbury, Vt., died Friday, Aug. 3, 2007 of complications of an extended illness at the age of 59. Kay was a devoted student of Vidyadhara Chgyam Trungpa Rinpoche, founder of Kame Choling in Barnet. It was his inspiration that led her to devote her life to the practice and study of Buddhist and Shambhala teachings in order to fulfill her goal of living her life with kindness toward others. Out of this goal arose a life filled with love and hard work that led to inspiring other meditators to practice meditation when they appeared to become distracted by worldly affairs. She did this by selflessly taking on scheduling and coordinating practice sessions when she felt that was needed, and personally calling and inspiring those she felt needing some encouragement. When she and her family moved to Vermont in 1998 from Evanston, Ill., she felt the need for the Shambhala community to begin a meditation center in St. Johnsbury. With patience, love, and much persistence, she was able to magnetize enough of those who live in the area to help her accomplish this goal. The Shambhala Center of St. Johnsbury continues to serve our area by offering meditation instruction and classes. Using the grand elegance and dignity she learned from her parents, Kay enjoyed playing an important part in hosting visiting Buddhist teachers, offering her best crystal, china, and furniture in order to create an uplifted environment for the benefit of both teacher and students during teaching visits. This natural elegance was maintained in her home for the benefit of her family, even during the trying times of her illness. She is survived by her loving husband, Richard Walter of St. Johnsbury; son Jesse Whittington Walter also of St. Johnsbury; her mother, Helen Louise Whittington of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers and their wives, Skip and Faye Whittington of Atlanta, Ga., and Richard and Karen Whittington of St. George, Utah; and nephews, nieces, and grandnephews. Her presence and energy will also be missed by the members of the Shambhala Buddhist community, especially by two of her dearest friends in life who provided much needed support during her long illness: Rochelle Weithorn of New York City and Lillian Concordia of Mosquitoville, and countless others who were touched by her kindness and elegance throughout her life. She was predeceased by her father Millen "Doc" Whittington and her beloved Golden Retriever canine companion, Rocky. All are welcome to attend the Sukhavati (Buddhist funeral service) in the Pavilion at Karme Choling, 369 Patneaude Lane in Barnet on Monday, Aug. 6, at 8 p.m. Please park in the main parking lot.
