, 83, of Orleans died peacefully March 13, 2007, in Barton. Mrs. Lanoue was born August 4, 1923, in Jersey City, New Jersey, a daughter of Andrew and Alexandra (Borodin) Kushneruk. On September 28, 1946, she married Maurice "Pitt" Lanoue, who predeceased her in 1983. She was co-owner, with her husband and RouvilleLanoue, of Lanoue'sIGA Market; she retired as bookkeeper in 1993. She owned at one time, with her husband, the Barton Steak House, and she was employed by Pierce Pharmacy. She enjoyed playing bingo, knitting, playing cards with her friends at the community senior citizens center, reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, playing computer games, collecting clocks, and socializing with her friends at the Rainbow Apartments. She enjoyed her friends at the Christmas Club. She was a member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Orleans and American Legion Auxiliary Post 23. She is survived by eight children: Sharon Forest and her husband, Fred, of Morgan, Gary Lanoue of Orleans, James Lanoue and his wife, Ann, of Orleans, Leigh Lanoue of Orleans, Denise Lane and her husband, Lonnie, of Jacksonville, Florida, Mark Lanoue of Orleans, Christine May and her husband, Mark, of Jacksonville, and Lisa Grimes and her husband, Tommy, of Jacksonville; by a godson, Michael Krasko, of New Jersey; by ten grandchildren; by four great-grandchildren; by several nieces and nephews; and by sisters- and brothers-in-law. She was predeceased by two infant sons; by a brother, John Kushneruk; and by two sisters, Anna Krasko and Nettie Lutz. Funeral services were held March 17 at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Orleans with the Reverend Daniel Rupp celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Sandra Jean (Merchant) Bell

, 65, formerly of St. Johnsbury and Orleans, died at her home in Fall River, Massachusetts, on February 27, 2007. Ms. Bell was born in St. Johnsbury on March 14, 1941, a daughter of Bernice Merchant. Her early childhood was spent in Waterford, and she attended elementary school there. In 1953, at age 12, she was taken into foster care by the Reverend Leroy N. and Roseanne Hastings, then of East St. Johnsbury. Although never adopted, she was a cherished member of that family and moved with them to Orleans in 1955. She graduated from Orleans High School in 1959 and then moved to Burlington to seek employment. In 1961, she met and married Charles Bell and, for the next 16 years, lived the roving life of a military family, making their home in Massachusetts, Texas (while he served in Vietnam), Washington State, Japan, Florida, and Tennessee. During these years, they had three sons, but their marriage ended in 1977. In 1978, while working at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Brockton, Massachusetts, she met Francis Sweeney, a quadriplegic patient then confined to the hospital. She trained to become a personal care attendant, and although they never married, they were devoted to one another for 23 years. She enabled him to live independently in his own home until his death in 2001, and he was the love of her life. She is survived by two sons, Derek of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Jamison of Fall River; by her two elder brothers, Leslie Merchant of Lancaster, New Hampshire, and Theron Merchant of St. Johnsbury; by her dad, Leroy Hastings, of Brownington; by her two younger brothers, Mark Hastings of Brownington and Timothy Hastings of Westmore; by her grandson Derek Bell; and by loving aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. She was predeceased by her infant son Edmund Dean Bell in 1969. A memorial service is planned for Easter at the Brownington Congregational Church Cemetery. In accordance with her wishes, following cremation, her remains will be scattered on the Atlantic Ocean at White Horse Beach, south of Plymouth, Massachusetts, joining the remains of her dear friend and companion, Frank Sweeney.
Evelyn "Evie" Denesha Hannon

, 96, of Island Pond died peacefully on March 18, 2007, at the Newport Health Care Center after a brief illness. Mrs. Hannon was born July 31, 1910, in Constable, New York. In her youth, summers were spent, along with her three sisters, visiting her aunt Leona (Keevers) Denesha at Bayview Beach in Milford, Connecticut. This is where she met and married William Hannon and lived bringing up her three daughters. During school years, she attended St. Joseph's Academy in Malone, New York, furthering her education at Champlain Valley Nursing School in Plattsburg, New York. She became a registered nurse and worked 12 hours a day, seven days a week, at Alice Hyde Hospital in Malone. In later years she returned home to Malone to live with and take care of her elderly mother who lived to be 99 and a half years old. She enjoyed reading, letter writing, playing cards, and attending church socials. She belonged to the Ladies Home Bureau and volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul's. She traveled mostly by train, car, or bus so as not to miss a sight. She enjoyed going through small towns and was awestruck at the sight of the beauty of larger cities. In her daily journal she recorded her wonderful times to later share with others. She praised the Lord daily for the beautiful world he created and for all the gifts bestowed upon all of us. Her exceptional lifelong faith was the biggest part of her life as she shared her joy to anyone whose lives touched hers. Her passion was the Boston Red Sox, and she was thrilled to see them beat the New York Yankees in the World Series twice in her lifetime. She began her day saying her daily rosary. She devoted her prayers to whomever she thought needed it the most that day. She was a communicant of St. James Church in Island Pond. She is survived by her sister Glenyth and brother-in-law Louis Caamano of Clearwater, Florida; by daughters Susan Briggs of Island Pond and Marilyn Hennessy of Plymouth, Massachusetts; by three loving sons-in-law; by her eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, who were showered with all of her love and affection; by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins and their families who will always remember her as the loving, caring, person she was. She loved them as much as they loved her. She was predeceased by her husband, William Hannon; by her daughter Nancy Nelson; by infant grandson Michael Thomas Cooper; by her mother, Marry Leah (Morgan) Denesha; by her father, Wilbur Denesha; by her brother Herbert Denesha; and by her sisters Dorothy Russell and Marie Mitchell. Friends and family of all ages called her mom, grammy, or Evie. She brought sunshine into the lives of all who knew her. She was an angel on earth and will live on through her family forever. Friends and family may call from 2 to 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 22, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Darling Hill Road in Newport. Spring graveside services and interment will be held at the Lakeside Cemetery in Island Pond.

, 81, of Brownington died Friday, March 16, 2007, at North Country Hospital in Newport following a long illness. Mrs. Dwyer was born in Barton on July 5, 1925, a daughter of Raymond and Naomi (Laythe) Lafoe. She attended school in Orleans. She married Richard Hunt, who predeceased her. She lived many years in the Tupper Lake, New York, area, where she worked as a caregiver at the state hospital. In 1988 she married Norman Dwyer and had since made her home in Brownington. She enjoyed bowling and playing golf. She was a member of Take Off Pounds Sensibly. She leaves her husband, Norman Dwyer, of Brownington; a son, Timothy Hunt, of Margate, Florida; two daughters, Nancy Redman of Syracuse, New York, and Pamela Morris of Albany, New York; stepchildren: Rachel Blanchard of West Glover, Ross Dwyer of White River, Randy Dwyer, who is serving his country in Jordan, and Ricky Dwyer of Sharon; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sister Marlene "Skeet" Phillips. A spring graveside service will be announced at a later date. , 70, died Sunday, March 18, 2007, at his home in Craftsbury, surrounded by his family. Mr. Ecklund was born May 26, 1936, in Madera, California, a son of John W. and Mary Virginia (Knowles) Ecklund. At age 18, he joined the United States Navy and served for four years in communications, stationed in Japan and Alameda, California. Upon his honorable discharge, he attended Fresno State University before starting his civilian career, the bulk of which was spent as a planner and architect in San Luis Obispo, California. He was an avid golfer and a man of varied interests and hobbies. He was a dedicated collector of Naval memorabilia and hunting and pocket knives among other items. He made hunting knives and stained-glass art. He was a member of E ClampusVitus, the Independent Order of Oddfellows, and the Historical Arms Society. In 2004 he and his wife, Susan, moved to their current residence in Craftsbury Village to be close to their children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Susan, of Craftsbury; by two daughters, Christina Ecklund and her husband, Maurizio Iantorno, of San Francisco, California, and Marina Ecklund and her husband, Robert Osmond, of Burlington and Craftsbury; by two sons, Shawn Ecklund and his wife, Cheryl, and Morgan Ecklund and his wife, Elena Gustavson, all of Craftsbury; by eight grandchildren: Isabella and Sofia Iantorno, Grace, Mason, and Lillian Ecklund-Gustavson, and Emerson, Abigail, and Claire Osmond; and by her sister Judy Harrison and her husband, Jerry Rossiter, of Atwater, California. A memorial gathering will be held at the home of Marina Ecklund and Bob Osmond at 312 South Craftsbury Road in Craftsbury on Saturday, March 24, from 3 to 6 p.m. There will be a potluck meal to share with friends and family. , 97, of Sun City, Arizona, died March 14, 2007. A native of Craftsbury, Mrs. Griswold was born February 28, 1910, on the Bailey farm, a daughter of Glenn and May Bailey. She graduated from Craftsbury Academy in 1927. She married Ralph Griswold of Johnson in 1930. They moved to Chicago, where they owned a jewelry store for 30 years. She was predeceased by her husband in 1993; by her brother Chester Bailey of Montpelier in 1986; and by her sister Annabelle Restall in 1993. She is survived by her brother Wesley J. Bailey of Derby; and by her sisters Ethel Bailey of Greensboro and Thelma Ward of Johnson.

, 91, of Albany died peacefully, surrounded by his wife and daughters, on Monday, March 12, 2007, at Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton. Mr. Hallowell was born in Camden, New Jersey, on August 22, 1915, a son of Florence and George Hallowell, who predeceased him. He married Olga Daniluk on February 10, 1940. He worked at the Camden Shipyard during World War II. Later he worked for the Penn Jersey Detective Agency and retired from GTE in 1980, when he moved to Albany. He loved sports, especially baseball and football. He enjoyed reading, especially about history and politics, and newspapers. He loved woodworking and golfing. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Olga; and by his daughters Cathie Sheehan and Pat Dipietro of Albany. He was predeceased by his sister Florence "Floss" Hallowell. There will be no calling hours. Spring interment will be in the Albany Village Cemetery. , 78, of Newport died peacefully March 15, 2007, at Union House Nursing Home in Glover. Mrs. McKinney was born April 10, 1928, in Island Pond, a daughter of Edward and Ida (Legacy) Hawkins. She was a graduate of Brighton High School. On December 23, 1958, she married Milton McKinney, who predeceased her on November 14, 2005. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening, canning, and fishing and taking long walks in Newport with her husband. She is survived by her children: Sandra Valley of Barton, Ronald McKinney of Lyndonville, Garth McKinney of Sheffield, and Jean Fawcette of Sierra Vista, Arizona; by 12 grandchildren; by eight great-grandchildren; by two great-great-grandchildren; by two sisters, Phyllis Glasson of Barton and Irene Annis of Island Pond; and by a brother, Edward Hawkins Jr., of Elmonte, California. Spring graveside services will be held in Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport with the Reverend David Lisner officiating.

, 77, of St. Johnsbury, formerly of Hardwick and Greensboro, died Sunday, March 18, 2007, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Thompson was born April 24, 1929, in Danville, a daughter of the late Neal W. and Emma (Stocker) Sargeant. She attended Danville public schools and graduated from Danville High School in 1947. She was employed by the Caledonia National Bank in Danville for more than 17 years. She later worked for Cabot Creamery and the Woodbury school lunch program. She retired in 1994. She was first married to Paul Berard. She later married William Fay Thompson in Greensboro on January 15, 1971. She was affiliated with the United Church of Hardwick. She was a past member of the Hardwick Senior Citizens, Lamoille Senior Citizens, and the Mackville Home Dem. She will be remembered for her love of keyboard music, which she generously shared at private parties and weddings and with many seniors at nursing homes, adult daycare centers, and local senior centers. Other interests include camping, square dancing, cooking, knitting, and doing crafts. Survivors include seven children: Patricia Wakeham of St. Johnsbury, David Thompson of Hardwick, Jody Berard of Newport, William G. Thompson of Hardwick, Audria Cleveland of Craftsbury, Ginger Hall of East Hardwick, and Vicki Bisson of Stannard; three brothers: Neal Sargeant of Marshfield, Donald Sargeant of Barton, and Theodore Sargeant of Huntington; two sisters, Martha Sevigny of Connecticut and Marilyn Graham of Texarkana, Arkansas; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Bill, on January 29, 1999, and by a sister, Patricia Sargeant. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 22, at 2 p.m. at the Northern Vermont Funeral Home in Hardwick with the Reverend Ernest Machia of the Hope Community Church in Walden officiating. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 1 p.m. until the hour of the service. Spring burial will be in the family lot in the Greensboro Village Cemetery.
