, 86, beloved teacher and active environmentalist, died peacefully at her home in New Jersey after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease on February 27, 2007. An idealist in her dedication and energy to her students and for social causes she believed in, Mrs. Richardson worked tirelessly for the environment, for the anti-contra war movement in the 1980s, for low-income housing, and for education. Born in Bayonne, New Jersey, on November 22, 1920, she was educated at Holy Family Academy in Bayonne and Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia and completed studies at Columbia University toward a master's degree. She taught English from 1941 to 1953 at The Washington School and Bayonne High School, and re-entered teaching after the death of her husband in 1971 until 1990 when she retired. In 1953 she married John Francis Richardson, a professor of humanities at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. She worked for a number of years as a special committee member for the Scholastic Aptitude Tests in Princeton, New Jersey, developing the questions on English literature and grammar posed to millions of high school students annually in university placement tests and on development of foreign service exams for the U.S. State Department. She was a trustee of the Stevens Cooperative Nursery School in Hoboken, The Hopes Foundation, and the Claire Stevens Foundation. Drawing on her wartime and post-war experience teaching the English language to Allied officers, especially Russian naval officers, she helped develop the New Jersey State curriculum for English as a second language (ESL), which was in its infancy, and taught a pioneering ESL program at Bayonne High. Her passion for environmental issues was expressed in her work as a founding member of the Hudson River Waterfront Coalition and Bayonne Against Tanks, which successfully lobbied for the establishment of a 12-mile-long park along the Hudson on the New Jersey side and the exclusion of chemical tanks in populous areas. She served in various capacities on committees and coalitions with other environmental organizations, including the Littoral Association, and as a trustee of the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions. Her other activities included sanctuary work with refugees from Guatemala and El Salvador during the 1980s. She never remarried after her husband's death in 1971. She had homes in Spring Lake and Bayonne, New Jersey, and Barton. She is survived by one brother, William Higgins, of Los Angeles; by seven children: Anne Richardson of Brooklyn, New York, Joan Richardson of Bayonne, Martha Richardson of Washington, D.C., Mary Richardson Kennedy of Mount Kisco, New York, John Richardson of Venice, California, Eithne Richardson of Washington, D.C., and Thomas Richardson of Washington, D.C.; by her 12 grandchildren: Olivia Skye Cameron, Emma Ward Cameron, Luke Cameron, Kate Richardson, Otis Long Richardson, Conor Kennedy, Kyra Kennedy, Finn Kennedy, Aidan Kennedy, Alexandra Richardson, Andrew Richardson, Isabel Sperans Karsch, and James Richardson Karsch; and by her devoted caregiver-companion in the last years of her life, Bernice Hedley.
