, 80, of Newport died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on December 12, 2007, in Glover. Mrs. Young was born August 20, 1927, in Newport, a daughter of Homer and Olivine (Barbin) Kenneson. On March 2, 1946, she married Charles Kinsley Young, who predeceased her on July 15, 1997. She is survived by her daughters: Doreen Cornell and her husband, Amos, of Newport, Diane Young of Newport, and Deborah Lane and her husband, David, of Fort Smith, Arkansas; by 11 grandchildren: Tammy and her friend, Tim, Cindy and her husband, Steve, Robin Wing, Brian and his wife, Christine, Tony and his wife, Elsie, Sharon and her friend, Robert, Becky, Erika and her husband, Dana, Tonya, and Tara and her friend, David; by 15 great-grandchildren; and by one great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by a son, Allan Young, on August 13, 1997; and by a sister, Jane Ellis. There will be no calling hours. Spring interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport. Forrest W. Rice

, 90, of Derby died in Newport on December 10, 2007. Mr. Rice was born on March 18, 1917, in Derby, a son of Harry and Vinnie (Fellows) Rice. His parents and his stepmother, Mildred Rice, predeceased him. He spent his early years in the Derby area and graduated from Derby Academy in 1936. He enlisted in the Army one month after Pearl Harbor and served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 until 1945, attaining the rank of tech sergeant. After the service, he joined his father at Rice Chevrolet, which was located at the foot of East Main Street and the Causeway in Newport. This became Frawley Chevrolet in 1958 and eventually led to Mulkin Chevrolet. For a short time he and Ross Whipple owned Rice-Whipple Furniture Store. He also sold used cars on the Derby Road for a few years before retiring. He was a charter member of the Newport Elks Club 2155, a member of American Legion Post 21 of Newport and Veterans of Foreign Wars Alfred Pepin Post 798. His great love was boating, and he owned several boats, which he had on Lake Memphremagog over many years. He did a lot of traveling, including a trip around the United States and spending much time in Florida. He enjoyed going out to eat at area restaurants with many friends. He delighted in visiting with the waitresses and their many acts of kindness. He is survived by the mother of their son and his very best friend, Hester Rice, of Newport; by his son William Rice and his wife, Gloria, of Calais; by his grandchildren Warren and Caroline Rice of Calais; by his sister Dorothy McHenry of West Virginia; and by several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and by dear friends Maurice and Rhonda Besaw and family of Derby. Funeral services were held December 14 at a Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend Marc Aube officiating. Spring interment will he held at the Derby Center Cemetery with full military honors. John Gilbert Power

, 57, died at his home in Derby Line on Tuesday, December 11, 2007, of melanoma. Mr. Power was born November 16, 1950, in Baltimore, Maryland, a son of Gordon and Ethel Power. He graduated from Swarthmore College in 1973 with a bachelor's degree. He earned his master of library science degree from the University of Maryland. He served as a librarian in Carroll County, Maryland, until he moved to Vermont in 1984 to serve as regional librarian at the Northeast Regional Library in St. Johnsbury. He decided to change careers and attend law school and graduated from Vermont Law School in 1991. He practiced law in New York City for four years. He survived the first attack on the World Trade Center in 1993, having to climb down 59 flights of stairs to safety along with his co-workers. He moved to Boston to work for one year before he returned to Vermont to work as a public defender and open his own law office with partner Doug Willey. On July 13, 1985, he married Carol Rund Swett, who survives him. He is survived by two daughters, Kim Swett and Colleen Swett; by a grandson, Brandon Swett; by his stepmother, Cathe, of Phoenix, Maryland; by siblings and their families: Gordon Power of Redlands, California, Garret Power of Baltimore, Steve Power of Monkton, Maryland, Vallie Larson of Monkton, Andrea Burgoyne of Cockeysville, Maryland, and Adrienne Smith of Monkton. At his request, there will be no funeral or service. , 87, of Johnson died peacefully on Monday, December 10, 2007, with her family by her side. Mrs. Parker was born June 10, 1920, in Troy, a daughter of Dorothy Flint Morey and Clyde Morey. She married Henry A. Parker Jr. on June 20, 1938, in Morrisville. After living in Newport, Noank, Connecticut, and Jeffersonville, she and her husband settled in Johnson in 1947 and built their home on Clay Hill. She graduated from Newport Center High School, received her licensed practical nursing degree from Fanny Allen Nursing School, and graduated from Johnson State College with a bachelor of arts degree in art in 1975. She worked at the Chatfield Nursing Home and was the Johnson town librarian and then the circulation librarian at Johnson State College for over 17 years. She was an avid reader, loved her mysteries, and spent relentless hours reading to her grandchildren. As a naturalist, she was an expert on birds and wildflowers. She was a member of the United Church of Johnson and would have received her 65-year pin from the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 65 of Johnson. She is survived by her children: Keith Parker and his wife, Judy, of Greer, South Carolina, Jill Chaffee of Derby Line, and Laurel Persico and her husband, Patrick, of Morrisville; by her grandchildren: Stephanie Proper and her husband, Dan, of Shelby, North Carolina, Melissa Goldstein and her husband, Michael, of Juneau, Alaska, Kristen Laing and her husband, Dan, of Hastings, Nebraska, Rebecca Chaffee of Chicago, Illinois, Jared Chaffee of Pembroke, New Hampshire, Dorey Chaffee of Daytona Beach, Florida, Lyman Persico and his wife, Angela, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Christopher Persico of Morrisville; by her sisters-in-law: Dorothy Morey of Troy, Gretchen Hedin and her husband, Carl, of Sachse, Texas, and Rita Parker of Johnson; by five great-grandchildren; by several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and by her dear friend, Anna Dermody, of St. Albans. She was predeceased by her husband; by her oldest son, Henry III; by her brother James Morey; by her sister Alice Morey; by her brother-in-law Richard Parker; and by her aunt Nancy Parker. Her life was celebrated at the United Church in Johnson December 15. , 69, of Newport died December 15, 2007. Mr. Jenkins was born October 18, 1938, in South End on Sea, England, a son of Lewis Benjamin Jenkins and Mary Kathleen Jessup. On August 26, 1996, he married Margaret Hunter, who survives him. He was a graduate of Farnborough College in England, earning a degree in engineering. After being recruited in the late 1960s by Space Research Corporation, he immigrated to Canada for a short period of time and, thereafter, the United States, having dual citizenship in both the United States and England. He worked at the Space Reseach facility in North Troy as a program manager, managing programs for the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy. In 1980, he and six of his colleagues founded Phoenix Engineering in Newport, working with the U.S. Army and its NATO allies. He was the current president of Phoenix Engineering. He was an avid reader and an even more avid golfer. He was past president of Orleans Country Club and remained an active member of the board of directors. He traveled extensively over the years. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Hunter, of Newport; by his son David Hunter, his wife, Sarah, and their children Grayson and Lauren of Franklin, Massachusetts; by his cousin David Jenkins and his wife, Patricia, of Tenerife, Canary Islands, and their daughter Megan Jenkins of Birmingham, England. A service of remembrance will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 19, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Darling Hill Road in Newport. , 66, of East Hardwick died Sunday, December 16, 2007, in the comfort of his home and family, following a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Gates was born April 17, 1941, in Hardwick, a son of the late Clifford W. and Ethel (Calkins) Gates. He attended Hardwick Academy. On April 1, 1961, he married Sylvia Jean Willey in Morrisville. In his earlier years he was employed by Gates Salvage in Hardwick. He was a self-employed truck driver and worked for Munson's Earth Moving in Burlington. He later worked for L.G. Bellavance & Sons in Hardwick for 18 years, and for more than 17 years he was employed by the town of Hardwick on its road crew. He retired in 2003 due to failing health. He was a member of Caspian Lake Lodge 87 of Free and Accepted Masons in Hardwick. He enjoyed the time that he spent with his grandchildren, visiting with family and friends. Other enjoyments included caring for his lawn, being outdoors, and tinkering. Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Sylvia; three daughters: Robin Gates of East Hardwick, Vicki Gates of South Barre, and Maria Perry of Brownington; eight grandchildren: Chelsea and Dylan Gates-Sholan of East Hardwick, Cody and Tyra Lanpher and Bradey "Bugsy" Gates-Lanpher of South Barre, and Tyler, Riley, and Morgan Perry of Brownington; three sisters: Ruth Silver of East Hardwick, Catherine Donaghy of Hinesburg, and Rita Pasqueriello of Schenectady, New York; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by three brothers: William "Bill' Gates, Clifford Gates, and Harold Gates; and by two sisters, Dorothy Robbins and Elizabeth Smith. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 21, at 2 p.m. at the Northern Vermont Funeral Home in Hardwick with the Reverend Judy Waible of the United Church in Hardwick officiating. Geraldine "Geri" Elizabeth Frey

, 80, of Sierra Vista, Arizona, died and went home to her Lord on Saturday, November 17, 2007, at the Sierra Vista Life Center. She died of complications following a stroke. Mrs. Frey was born June 23, 1927, in Island Pond, the only daughter of the late Winfield Lawrence and Florence Elizabeth (Wallace) Welch. She graduated from North Troy High School in 1945. Following a wartime courtship, she married Wilbur T. Frey on October 12, 1945, in Island Pond. She and her husband had four sons and made their home in Island Pond prior to moving to Yarmouth, Maine, in 1966. They moved to Sierra Vista after Mr. Frey's retirement in 1985. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandfather, friend, and a prayer warrior. Her wisdom, faith, and humor will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She is survived by four sons: Gregory and his wife, Lana, of Rapid City, South Dakota, Mark and his wife, Mary, of Bakersfield, California, Stuart and his wife, Lynn, of Weldon, California, and Stanley and his wife, Linda, of Freeport, Maine, by ten grandchildren; and by 14 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Wilbur T. Frey. She was inurned at Southern Arizona Veterans Cemetery in Sierra Vista on November 23. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

, 92, died Sunday, December 9, 2007, in Danbury, Connecticut, after a long illness. Mrs. Faucher was born in Sorel, Québec, on June 14, 1915, a daughter of the late Omer and Mathilda (Chapdelaine) Brouillard. She grew up in Westfield and was a homemaker in Lowell for many years. She moved to Troy in 1989 and was a communicant of Sacred Heart Parish in Troy. She was a longtime member of the Ladies of Saint Anne. The last few years of her life were spent in Danbury near her daughter. She was the widow of Jean-Thomas Faucher. She leaves her son Marcel of Troy; her daughter Jeannine Rancourt and her husband, James, of Southbury, Connecticut; granddaughter Diana Rancourt of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; sister Marie Brouillard of Easthampton, Massachusetts; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held December 13 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Troy with the Reverend Henry Mlinganisa celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Spring interment will be in St. Ignatius Cemetery in Lowell.

, 87, of Newport died peacefully December 12, 2007, in Barton. Mr. Davio was born October 11, 1920, in Newport, a son of Edward and Weltha (Magoon) Davio. On July 22, 1942, he married Angeline Moyer, who survives him. He graduated from Newport High School and St. Johnsbury Academy. He was postmaster at the Newport Post Office for many years. He enjoyed gardening, stamp and coin collecting, and bowling. He is survived by his wife, Angeline Davio, of Newport; by his son Brandon Davio of Newport; by daughters Theresa Drake and her husband, Philip, of Derby and Cheryl Davio of Deerfield Beach, Florida; by his grandchildren: Paula Gratton and her husband, Ronnie, of Fairfax, Scott Drake of Gansevoort, New York, Doug Drake and his wife, Tammy, of North Troy, and Rhonda Drake of Underhill; by three great-grandchildren: Tia, Nate, and Emma Drake; and by his siblings: Francis Ormsbee and his wife, Amelia, of Newport, Kenneth Ormsbee of Texas, Joan McDonald and her husband, Ken, of East Charleston, and Alma Blay of Coventry. , 87 of Irasburg, with her work on Earth being finished, died and went to be with her Lord on December 11, 2007, at Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton. Mrs. Burkewitz was born June 3, 1920, in Derby, a daughter of Guy and Mary (Davis) Longeway. On August 20, 1939, she married Paul Burkewitz, who predeceased her in 1988. She and her husband lived on the family farm in Irasburg and owned and operated Burkewitz Transport and Burkewitz Oil Corporation in Coventry. She was a sales clerk at Ames in Derby for many years. She held memberships with the Irasburg United Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, Irasburg Ladies Aid, and Home Dem. She is survived by her son James Burkewitz and his wife, Cindi, of Sanders, Arizona; by her daughter Mary Jane Turner and her husband, David, of Irasburg, by her grandchildren: Timothy Burkewitz and his wife, Debbie, Jana Grant and her husband, Bradley, Pamela Kamine and her husband, Fred, Dana Burkewitz and his wife, Wendy, Amy Leroux and her husband, Dale, Michael Turner, and Sonja Burkewitz; by 13 great-grandchildren; and by nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sons DurwoodBurkewitz and Rodney Burkewitz and his wife, Wanita, in 1992; and by a brother, Lyman Longeway.
