Dale H. Bartlett

, 83, of Newport Center died in comfort at his home on July 7, 2007, after a three-and-a-half-year battle with lung cancer. He was born September 20, 1923, in Newport Center, a son of Guy and Ruth (Goodall) Bartlett. On February 14, 1949, he married Margaret Paquette, who predeceased him in 1993. Mr. Bartlett enjoyed camping and fishing. He and his wife had lived in Newport Center since 1951, moving from Morgan, where they owned and operated a store. Mr. Bartlett was a clerk at the former Grand Union Store in Newport, where he retired with 30 years of service. He is survived by three children: Brenda Mahoney and her husband, James, of Winooski, Donald Bartlett of Newport Center, and Barbara Wing of Colchester. He is also survived by two grandchildren: Adam and Trevor Wing. The family gives special thanks to Mary Leach and her family for making Dad a part of their family for the past 13 years. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Darling Hill Road in Newport. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 12, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Newport with the Reverend Dallas St. Peter celebrating a Mass of Christian burial. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Winnifred R. (Woodward) Cass

, 82, of St. Johnsbury died Friday, July 6, 2007, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Cass was born November 23, 1924, in Cabot. She was the last surviving child of the late Raymond and Evelyn (Daigneault) Woodward. She was a 1942 graduate of Lyndon Institute. On December 19, 1942, she married Dale Cass. They lived near Willoughby Lake and were caretakers of the properties owned by the Harter family for 25 years. Later they moved to East Haven. She worked at Vermont Tap and Die Company in Lyndonville for several years and then Northeast Tool Company in Lyndon for several more years as a bookkeeper, retiring in 1986. She was a bookkeeper for the Tap and Die Credit Union, now known as NorthCountry Federal Credit Union, in Lyndonville for nearly 30 years. She was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 28 of West Burke and Lyndon since 1964. She held several positions there including, Ruth and district director and worthy matron several times throughout the years. In 2005 she was commissioned grand representative to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, which she enjoyed visiting. Reading, ceramics, knitting, crocheting, and completing puzzles brought her much enjoyment. But her greatest enjoyment was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Survivors include four children: Louise Wells and her husband, Raymond, of St. Johnsbury, Edward Cass and his wife, Gloria, of Hartland, Priscilla Rossier and her husband, Anthony, of St. Albans, and Thomas Cass of New York; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Barbara Woodward of West Burke; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Dale Cass, in 1982; by her son Stanley Cass in the early 1970s; by her brother Ralph Woodward; and by her sister and brother-in-law Marie and George Hill. Graveside services will be held Friday, July 20, at 2 p.m. at the Woodmont Cemetery in East Burke. There will be no visiting hours. Robert "Bob" A. Charland

, 60, of Newport, beloved husband of Pat, died suddenly in Newport on Monday, July 9, 2007. Mr. Charland was born to Bernard and Madeline (Judd) Charland on July 7, 1947, in Newport. He formerly worked for the Department of Liquor Control, including being manager of a local store. He and his wife, Pat, were very interested in antiques and had owned their own store, Somebody's Attic, in Newport for over 13 years. He enjoyed cooking, entertaining, and caregiving. He and his wife, Pat, took in and mentored many young people to help them get on life's right path. He derived great pleasure from his pets and from growing and nurturing his flower gardens. He was a member of Newport Elks Club 2155, Newport Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post 21, Vermont J.C.I. Senate, and the Reparative Board of Orleans County Court System. He married Patricia Lord, who survives him, in 1965. He is survived by a brother, Allen Charland, and his wife, Diane, of Burlington; and by several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews. An Elks service was held on July 12. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church in Newport on July 13 with the Reverend Philip Branon officiating. Interment followed in St. Edward's Catholic Cemetery in Derby Line. , 82, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, formerly of Newport, died Saturday July 14, 2007. Mrs. Dyott was a native of St. Tite, Quebec, a daughter of the late Joseph Arthur and Pamela (Rancourt) Bellemare. She was a homemaker and a member of the Franklin Road Baptist Church in Tennessee. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Lynn M. and Larry A. Sargent of Murfreesboro and Linda Lee and Larry R. Smotherman Jr. of Rockvale, Tennessee; by grandchildren: Private Second Class Clark B. Sargent, Caleb H. Sargent, and Jessie L. Sargent; by stepgrandchildren Wesley B. Sargent and his wife, Mindy, and Tracy M. Sargent; and by stepgreat-grandchildren Cole W. Sargent and Kora K. Sargent. She was predeceased by her husband, Bruno E. Dyott. Funeral services were held July 17 at the Franklin Road Baptist Church with Pastor Mike Norris officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24, at Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport.

, 82, of Springfield, Massachusetts, formerly of Barton, died peacefully July 8, 2007, in Longmeadow, Massachusetts. Mrs. Freehart was born August 6, 1924, in Barton, a daughter of Leon and Mildred (Dwyer) Tinker. On July 30, 1948, she married Edgar Freehart, who predeceased her on January 24, 1991. She was a member of St. Paul's Church in Barton and American Legion Auxiliary Barton Post 76. She enjoyed playing bridge. Her passion was taking care of people as she worked in several nursing homes in the area for many years. She is survived by children: Ronald Freehart of Springfield, Raymond Freehart of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Randy Freehart and his wife, Leigh, of Portland, Maine, Steve Freehart of Lyndonville, Eric Freehart and his wife, Nicole, of Sheffield, Bonnie Green and her husband, Dossie, of Springfield, Sue Wagner and her husband, Leo, of Canton, Austria, Joanna Hanna of Springfield, Gina St. John of Spencer, Massachusetts, and Robin Freehart of Stowe; by 12 grandchildren; by 11 great-grandchildren; and by a brother, Richard Dwyer, of Indiana. She was predeceased by her daughter Debrah; by two brothers, Stanley and Larry; and by sisters June and Betty. Funeral services were held on July 14 at St. Paul's Church with the Reverend Daniel Rupp celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in Welcome O. Brown Cemetery in Barton. Dorothy B. (Price) Newton

, 88, died July 9, 2007, in Brownington at her summer residence. Born in Newark, New Jersey, Mrs. Newton lived in North Arlington for 40 years before moving to Rutherford in 1981. She was a Sunday school teacher, superintendent of Sunday school, a deacon, and an elder of the First Presbyterian Church in North Arlington. Her former interests were bowling and gardening. She loved Johnny Cash music, Gone with the Wind, her Snoopy collection, hummingbirds, and she was an avid New York Yankees fan. She was a faithful servant of the Lord and supported her family and friends. She gave of herself to various charities and enjoyed her time in her Vermont residence. She was the wife of Herbert H. Newton Sr. for 65 years. Mr. Newton is the retired owner of the North Arlington Forest Dairy. She was the mother of Herbert H. Newton Jr., Carol Robb, Douglas Newton and his wife, Patricia, and Glen Newton and his wife, Kathleen, and sister of Jay Price and Ruth Oyer. She was the grandmother of eight and great-grandmother of two. She is survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held July 14 in the First Presbyterian Church. Interment will be in the Arlington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of North Arlington, 153 Ridge Road.

, 76, of Derby Line died in Barton after a long illness on Tuesday, July 10, 2007. Mrs. Pellerin was the beloved wife of Leonard Pellerin, who survives her. She is survived by stepdaughter Marsha Sicard and her husband, Paul; by stepsons Stephen and Scott Pellerin; by a sister, Barbara Roberts, of New Hampshire; by four grandchildren; by three great-grandchildren; and by nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Shelly Sears. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
Creigh D. Sylvester

, 74, a former resident of Montgomery and Sheldon, died on Sunday evening, July 8, 2007, at Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton. Mr. Sylvester was born on March 3, 1933, in Montgomery, a son of Phil and Emma E. (Parento) Sylvester. He served his country during the Korean War from 1952 to 1956 when he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army. He was a former member of American Legion Post 42 in Enosburg Falls. An outdoorsman, he loved nature, fishing, walking, sugaring, and gardening. He will be missed for his gentle, loving ways. He had a unique way of his own, helping those in need. His gentle smile and light blue twinkling eyes were infectious for all who were honored to be in his presence. He is already missed dearly by his family who realizes that he will be okay being in the honor of the Lord. They also know that someday they will join him in heaven and, once again, be around his kindness. Mr. Sylvester is survived by his sister Virginia Deming of Enosburg; and by several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Phil L. Sylvester and Guy Sylvester; and by four sisters: Priscilla Prouty, Eleanor Christian, Mildred Jones, and Hilda Wesley. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 18, at 10 a.m. at the Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg Falls with the Reverend Bernard Bechard officiating. Interment will follow in the Sylvester family lot at the Montgomery Village Cemetery.
