Peter L. Murray
....show
died August 25, 2007, in Island Pond where illness had brought him to live with the two women who were closest to him: Carmen Murray, his former wife, and Rebecca Murray, his daughter. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1941, he came to Vermont and the Northeast Kingdom in 1968 as part of a migration in the late '60s that saw people often unschooled in the ways of rural life move out of the cities so they could have a life working and living on the land. Pete, or Black Pete, as he was known among friends, did not work the land as a farmer or logger might. But he worked with his hands, and he worked with wood that for many has come to define Vermont. Initially, he made, or better yet hand-fashioned, wooden rocking chairs out of maple - put together with wooden plugs without aid of nails, screws, or glue. So elegant were they in shape and form, that he soon attracted the attention of people who knew they were seeing an original. His picture and a short descriptionof his work graced the pages of a July1974 National Geographic article that the magazine did on Vermont. In the same year he was also the subject of a short film by David Hancock and Herb DiGioia that was filmed in his shop in the barn at Mad Brook Farm, where he lived in a collective of artists, dancers, and schemers who would go on to create the literary shopper, the Green Mountain Trading Post. Pete sold most of his rockers within a larger community that gravitated to the upper half of the Northeast Kingdom. A fascination with knives led him to cut blades out of cross-cut saws that made excellent skinning knives once attached to the butt of a deer antler. Like his chairs they were signature pieces that live beside a body of work that includes abstract sculptures and a slew of hand-carved wooden trout that he painted according to species - brook trout, square tail, rainbow - and mounted on a steel rod. Throughout his life Pete saw himself as a painter, and during his later years painting became his great love. He painted landscapes, many from the views he had from his cabin, up the hill from the Main House at Mad Brook that looked north toward Canada. With another painter, Peter Miles of Burke Hollow - Red Pete - he had a show in 1998 at the Framing Format and Gallery in St. Johnsbury. But the paintings he may well best be remembered for are the ones he did during the last few years that depicted the interior of his cabin. Deep and as clean as any spring-fed fishing hole, they are painstakingly polished paintings that convey the bare-bones existence of an artist who lived a solitary life in the company of his friends and kids. In the sixty-sixth year of his life, Pete leaves behind, in addition to Carmen and Rebecca, a son, Simon Murray, of Mad Brook, East Charleston; a daughter, Nadine (Murray) McClusky, of Castro Valley, California; and John Cadorette, a son from Carmen's first marriage. Born of Leroy and Daisy Murray, Peter leaves behind two older sisters, Sandra Berwind of Bryn Mawr and Cynthia Ashworth of Granby, Connecticut, along with two younger siblings, David Murray of West Hartford and Diana Murray of Poughkeepsie, New York. Those who didn't know him from his art, doubtlessly knew him from life. Never without a sense of style, he had a wilting stare, a tall, gaunt angular frame, long callused fingers, and white hair that he wore pulled straight back. He danced like a crane. Pete kept his own counsel in a one-room cabin, tended the land around him with a groundskeeper's eye, played cribbage with his daughter, sang praises to his son, and liked to go on rides with his friends as long as they had him home at a reasonable hour. He inspired portraits and metaphors. On September 1 at a ceremony reserved for his immediate and extended family, Pete will be buried at Mad Brook in a wooden casket made by Simon. A memorial service and birthday party will be held for him on October 27 at the farm. Everyone is welcome.

Mr. Bishop was born April 24, 1965, in Rutland, a son of the late Thomas R. and Maureen June (O'Rourke) Bishop Sr. He lived with Rick Densmore for 17 years. He was an individual who brought much joy, delight, and learning experiences to the many lives he touched as a teacher and mentor. He is survived by a very small family other than his caregivers. A memorial service was held August 19 at a Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport. Interment followed at the Lyndon Center Cemetery.
Ronald Dean Allen

, 52, of Derby died August 21, 2007, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Allen was born August 9, 1955, in Newport, a son of Moses and Dorothy (Brooks) Allen. On August 1, 1998, he married Mary Champagne, who survives him. He graduated from North Country Union High School in 1974. He was a self-employed carpenter for most of his life. Some people are not of this time, and Mr. Allen was one of them. He crafted a life out of ancient ways - hunting, fishing, trapping, and carpentry. He spent most of his life within miles of his birthplace, Island Pond, because there was no better place in the world to him. He knew the trees, the lakes, the rivers, and everything in them. To anyone who knew him, whether close friend or new acquaintance, he had a story to tell about hunting or fishing. Watch out for Mr. Allen - he didn't shoot the largest buck, the most elusive bear, and still have time to reel in the biggest fish ever seen in Vermont. This is the legacy he leaves to his children and grandchildren - be a part of the world and be a part of nature. Live life on your own terms, because that's the way he lived his. Be good to each other and be willing to make mistakes. Live fully, not perfectly, because perfection is an impossible task. Be a part of the community, not just the community of people, but the community of nature. Be a part of the whole. Those who looked out the front porch of Mr. Allen's home saw a panorama of mountains, maybe a deer crossing the road or a hawk flying through the trees. This is his home now; this is his peace. He is a part of the whole. Some people are not of this time, and now Mr. Allen is a part of all time. He is survived by his wife, Mary Allen, of Derby; by his children: Dillon Allen, Paul Allen, Nicholas Tardif, Joselyn Tardif, Kristen and William Glover, Melanie Jetter, and Army Specialist Charles Jetter; by his parents, Moses and Dorothy Allen, of Island Pond; by his brothers: Steven and Connie Allen of Merrimack, New Hampshire, and Robert Allen and his companion, Melanie, and his children of East Charleston; by nieces Julie and Melissa; and by his grandchildren: Owen Allen and Nathan and Wyatt Glover. Funeral services were held August 25 in Newport with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family. Should friends desire, contributions in Mr. Allen's memory may be made to the Dillon Allen Trust Fund, in care of Community National Bank, P.O. Box 259, Derby, Vermont 05829.
