Walter H. Kerner

, 84, died at his home on February 1, 2007, with his loving wife at his side. Mr. Kerner was born in Germany and came to the United States when he was four years old. He was the son of Ernst and Emma (Werner) Kerner. He loved playing golf, bowling, gardening, and working around his property. He had formerly done a lot of fishing and duck hunting, and even some skiing. Most of all he loved his family, especially the new grandchildren. He was very proud of his military service and was a veteran of World War II, proud to serve his country after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was a SCORE counselor for 15 years, and he liked helping various businesses get started. He was on the board of the Newport Country Club and served many year's as the club's treasurer. He was an active member of St. Edward's Parish in Derby Line and headed the parish council. He was a fireman in his earlier years in Poughkeepsie, New York. He worked for IBM for 30 years, retiring at age 55 so he could enjoy his family and the wonders of nature. He was one of the original group of the IBM management team transferring to Burlington from Poughkeepsie in 1957. He leaves behind his partner of 35 years, Gisele BlaisKerner; his sons: Allan and his wife, Denise, of Essex Junction, Fredric and his wife, Mary, of Bennington, and Christian and his wife, Carisa, of Derby Line; his daughter Marlene Powers and her husband, Michael, of South Robins, Georgia; eight grandchildren: Jay, Matthew, Jessie, Amy, and Fritz Kerner, Aaron Powers, Sara Pelletier, and Ethan Lefvendahl; four great-grandchildren: Miles, Abigail, Keira, and Bailey Powers; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Shirley Jones Kerner, in 1971; and by a younger brother who died in infancy. Funeral services were held February 6 at St. Edward's Catholic Church with the Reverend Yvon Royer celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mr. Kerner's memory may be made to Orleans-Essex Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice, 46Lakemont Road, Newport, Vermont 05855 or to the charity of one's choice.

, 74, originally of West Burke, died peacefully at her home in Manassas, Virginia, on Thursday, February 1, 2007. Mrs. Lavoie was a 1951 graduate of the Lyndon Institute. She and her husband, Donald, were married May 1, 1952, and raised their family in Stamford, Connecticut, before moving to Manassas in 1991. She is survived by her beloved husband, Donald J. "Popi" Lavoie Sr.; by her daughter Juanita Florio and her husband, Tom, of Manassas; by her son Donald Lavoie Jr. and his wife, Jerri, of Stamford; by her sister Mildred Jurkoic of Ludlow; by four grandchildren; and by two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her three brothers: Gordon, Robert, and Elbert.
Rachel Alice Gaboriault Campbell

, 80, died in Newport February 3, 2007. Mrs. Campbell was born May 15, 1926, in Westmore, a daughter of the late Rosina Clouatre and Stanislaus Gaboriault. She attended St. Paul's School in Barton and Sacred Heart School in Newport. She worked for H.P. Hood & Sons for four years. In 1947 she married Leopold Campbell. They lived on a farm in East Albany for 13 years before moving to Newport in 1961. She was employed at Frederick's, Incorporated, in Newport for several years and then Seguin Music, Incorporated, for 21 years before retiring in 1994. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church, and she was a Eucharistic minister. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed being with her family - her children, granddaughters, brothers, and sisters. Her favorite pastime was playing cards. She enjoyed going for walks and doing puzzles. She leaves her husband, Leopold; one son, Philip, and his wife, Suzanne, of Vernon, New York; three daughters: Helen Ellsworth and her husband, Merritt, of St. Albans, Alice Drake and her husband, Gary, of Fletcher, and Patricia St. Onge of Morrisville; nine granddaughters: Allison Ruhnke, Amy Tetreault, Sarah Campbell, Kristina Spooner, Shannon Ellsworth, Amanda Kennedy, Abbey Drake, Emilie Rich, and Andrea St. Onge; three great-grandchildren: Audrey Tetreault, Jacob Spooner, and Wade Ruhnke; seven sisters: Lucille Harris of Oneonta, New York, Noella LeBlanc of Newport, Isabelle Pierce of Newport, Florence Fontaine and her husband, Dolor, of Newport, Irene Bowen of Essex Junction, Georgette Rowell and her husband, Marvin, of South Albany, and Ruth Rowell of South Albany; one brother, Wilfred Gaboriault, and his wife, Joan, of St. Johnsbury; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers: Arsene,Aime, Rudy, and Paul; and by a sister, Lucienne Laperle. Funeral services were held February 6 at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newport with the Reverend Yvon Royer celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Spring interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Newport. William "Bill" Carr

, 55, died peacefully at home Wednesday evening, February 7, 2007. He was surrounded by his loved ones. Mr. Carr was born in Berlin, New Hampshire, on July 16, 1951. He was a prominent figure in the Northeast Kingdom and has an amazing circle of friends in this community. He had a love of the woods and the sea. He had a long and distinguished career as a chief engineer in the Merchant Marines. He traveled the oceans of the world for nearly 30 years and garnered the respect and friendship from many in that community. He lived a large and full life. Those that knew him could not help but be affected by the depth and wealth of his personality. He will be missed by many. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary McCormick Carr; by his daughter Marcy Griffith; by his father, Richard "Dick" Carr; by his mother, Mary Landers Carr; by his brothers Richard and Michael Carr; and by his sisters: Laurie Carr, Deborah Benning, and Sandra Domina. A celebration of his life was held February 10 at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel in Newport with the Reverend Martha Peck officiating. Elum Kendall King

, 90, died February 9, 2007, after a long struggle. He was a resident at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center for the past six years. He was a hard worker who enjoyed his family. Mr. King was born July 15, 1916, in Westfield, a son of Edward and Gertrude Kendall King. On August 5, 1945, he married Helen Lee of North Troy. To this union was born a daughter Janice. His wife predeceased him on January 18, 2006. He is survived by his daughter Janice Gray and her loving husband, Stuart, of North Concord; by his grandchildren: Joanne Wright and her husband, Christopher, of Lisbon, New Hampshire, Jeffrey Gray and his wife, Evelyn, of North Concord, and Kevin Gray and his wife, Katrina, of Concord; by his great-grandchildren: Christopher and Aaron Wright, Brandon, Ryan, and Gregory Gray, and Kaylee and Dylan Gray; by his sister-in-law Lucy Murphy and her husband, Doug, of St. Johnsbury; by his brother-in-law Orland "Hub" Lee of St. Johnsbury; by a very special person, Dorcas Lee, of St. Johnsbury; and by many nieces and nephews. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in the spring next to his wife, Helen, in the Newport Center Cemetery. Elizabeth "Betty" Keane

, 77, of Cody, Wyoming, died January 26, 2007, after failing to recover from heart surgery. Mrs. Keane was born and raised in Old Lyme, Connecticut. She was a free spirit who spent her life pursuing her love of animals. She fought mightily and donated heavily to those creatures who could not help themselves. Horses were her obvious love. From an early age she showed, trained, raised, and rescued horses. In more than 70 years she was never without a horse in her yard. She married Charles Fox in 1949, and they had three daughters, all of whom still own horses. In 1982 she moved to Bushey Hill in Derby, where she spent many years riding New England trails before moving to Wyoming in 1999. Her life was a lesson for those who knew her: "Find peace of heart and learn to forgive, because there comes a time when there is no tomorrow." She is survived by her daughters: Charlene Anderson and her husband, Gary, of Olympia, Washington, Julie Kenney and her husband, Mic, of Cody, and Darlene Lloyd and her husband, John, of Bedford, Virginia; by two grandchildren; by her sister Kathleen of Connecticut; and by her brother Leon of Florida. At her request, cremation has taken place, and private services will be conducted later in New England.

, 73, beloved husband of Peggy, died suddenly Saturday, February 10, 2007. Mr. Jordan was born August 15, 1933, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a son of Harry and Elsie (Keppler) Jordan. He graduated from Palmyra High School in New Jersey in 1951 and received a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, in 1955. On December 19, 1959, he married Margaret "Peggy" Eppler, and they lived in Edgewater Park, New Jersey. He was an active member of the Beverly United Methodist Church and was past master of Beverly-Riverside Lodge 107 of Free and Accepted Masons. He was employed at Philco in Philadelphia and later by Federal Civil Service at McGuire Air Force Base (AFB) in New Jersey. The family moved to Newport in 1978. He sold real estate for Campbell Realty until he was recalled to McGuire AFB for several years, and to Fort Drum, New York, as base civil engineer during the rebuilding of the base. After retiring, he worked part time at the Pick & Shovel in Newport. From 1979 to 1990, he and his wife owned and operated the Miss Newport Diner. He was an active member of the United Church of Newport and a regional trustee of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. He was a past master and secretary of Memphremagog Lodge 65 of Free and Accepted Masons, Mt. Sinai Shrine 3, Malta Commandry 10, Orleans Council 19, and Cleveland Chapter 20 Knights Templar. He enjoyed family camping, woodworking, model railroading, gardening, building and maintaining his home, and helping his children with many projects in their homes. He is survived by his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Jordan; by his children: Alan and his wife, Karen, of Charlotte, Mark and his wife, JoAnn, of Nyon, Switzerland, and Cynthia of Newport; by three grandchildren: Katie, Christopher, and Lily; by brother and sister-in-law Robert and Joan; by sister Mildred Schmalbach of Clayton, New Jersey; by sister-in-law Anna Lee Eppler of Newport; by cousins: Ruth, Dan, Phillip, Brittany, and Sally Marquette of Newport; and by several nieces and nephews. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, February 17, at 11 a.m. at the United Church of Newport with the Reverend Joy Toll-Chandler officiating. Members of the Memphremagog Lodge will conduct a service at 10:45 a.m. at the church.
