Many of her teachers boarded in her home. She attended high school in Concord village, riding to school on the Maine Central Railroad two years. She drove a horse during her junior and senior years so she could carry the milk to the Trout Brook Creamery to be of help to her family. She attended Lyndon Normal School for two years, 1926-1928. She lived in Sanborn House, where she was a self-boarder. In 1960, she received a bachelor of science degree after taking courses and workshops at Lyndon Normal School and Lyndon State College. She began teaching at Bible Hill in St. Johnsbury, where she taught for two years, and then on to St. Johnsbury Center. She married Clyde Bugbee McGinnis on June 15, 1931. At that time there were too many teachers, and if any of them got married, St. Johnsbury would not hire them. In the middle of September, Miles Pond had eight children; as long as they had a schoolhouse, they were compelled to open it, a challenge as the school had not been open for several years and had to get all new equipment and supplies. Alice stayed there two years and then went to North Concord. After teaching there seven years, she went to Concord Primary School where she taught for 20 years. Concerned about her Social Security entitlement, she taught school in St. Johnsbury Center again for 11 more years. She taught for a total of 43 years - 29 in Concord and 14 in St. Johnsbury. Alice and Clyde McGinnis lived on farms in North Concord, Kirby and St. Johnsbury. Her favorite was the large farm at the top of Severance Hill in St. Johnsbury, known as the Rev. E.E. Grant farm. During the summers, nieces and nephews took turns visiting there. From there she moved to Lyndonville. She was a faithful member of the Third Congregational Church of East St. Johnsbury, where she sang in the choir and held several offices such as warden and deaconess. She was Old Home Day treasurer 1969-1972. She was a member of the Women's Fellowship of that church. This was the Ranney family's church; there is a stained-glass window there in memory of her grandparents. She received a lifetime honorary membership in the Caledonia and Southern Essex Counties Retired Teachers Association after serving 18 years as treasurer. She was a past noble grand of Juniper Branch Rebekah Lodge 9 of Lyndonville, where she served as treasurer for many years and also as recording secretary. She was past district deputy president of the Rebekah Assembly of Vermont for two years. She was a faithful member, taking part in state assemblies and degree rallies. She received the Decoration of Chivalry Aug. 3, 1986, which was conferred by the Department Council of Vermont and Quebec. Juniper Branch Rebekahs of Lyndonville closed their Lodge and consolidated with Olive Branch 4 in St. Johnsbury. Alice volunteered for 18 years at the NVRH Auxiliary. She was a "plus" member of the 251 club, having visited all the towns in Vermont. She received the Community Citizenship Award in recognition of outstanding service to the community and mankind by members of Enterprise Grange 16 in April 1993. She also received the Lyndon State College Loyalty Award on Sept. 26, 1992. The Concord High School Alumni Association honored her at the 1997 alumni banquet by naming the new playground project in her honor. She kept a list of all her students, and had stayed in touch with many of them. Her aim was to take each individual as he or she came to her and try to help them achieve their highest potential. She is survived by nieces Lois Gray Abell of Essex Junction, Vt., Louise Ranney Dobyns of Newport, Pa., and Ina Mae Ranney Wendland of Monkton, Vt.; nephews Olin Amos Gray and his wife Luanne of San Jose, Calif., and Robert Wisell and his wife Cindy of Forest City, Iowa. Alice lived 50 years in the same house on Center Street (two different apartments), from 1954 to 2004. Medical conditions necessitated the move to The Pines. For 31 years, Alice celebrated Mother's Day and Christmas and other family events at the home of Peter and Ina Mae Wendland and their three daughters, Wanda, Tiana and Marjorie. We will all miss her dearly. Memorial contributions could be directed to Third Congregational Church, P.O. Box 77, East St. Johnsbury, VT 05838.

Mary I. McMahon

, 82, of Concord, died at the CRVNA Hospice House surrounded by her family on Monday, March 19, 2007, after a brief illness following a stroke suffered on March 14. She was born in Concord, N.H., on July 22, 1924, daughter of the late Jonathan and Marion (Roby) Ingersoll. She attended Concord schools and Endicott College in Wellesley, Mass. In 1946, Mary married Walter McMahon and together they raised five children in their large home on School Street, commonly known in town as "The McMahonsion." Mary and Walter hosted numerous holidays and gatherings at their home for their family and friends. Their door was always open for visitors and impromptu get-togethers. In the early years, Mary was involved with the Cub Scouts and the Junior Service League, where she performed in many of their productions, including the "Sound of Music" and "My Fair Lady." Mary was employed in the medical field in Concord, working at the Concord Hospital lab; for Drs. Soule and Whittenberg; and for many years was a medical assistant for Dr. Phil Forsberg. After her "retirement," Mary worked part time for Dr. Tony Aversa and Dr. Ray Orzechowski. She also volunteered at Concord Hospital in the Day Surgery Unit. Mary became a member of the Concord Chorale at its inception in 1969. She performed with the chorale in venues all over the world, including Israel, Spain, Yugoslavia, Italy, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Wales, Ireland, Canada, Hungary, and even Carnegie Hall. Mary and Walter loved their travels with the chorale, and Walter was happy to carry their bags all over the world while Mary and the Chorale sang. Mary held the distinction as the oldest and longest reigning member of the Concord Chorale. When she was not singing with the chorale, Mary was singing with the CVO, an octet of chorale members, who preformed all over New England. They are known for their beautiful music and uncanny ability to bring a good time wherever they go. Mary enjoyed her Sunday rehearsals and all of her singing friends with whom she spent so any hours traveling, performing, and laughing. She was treated to two beautiful concerts by the CVO during her short hospitalization, and her family knows she heard and loved every note they sang. Prior to Walter's death in 1991, Mary and Walter enjoyed many travels on their own, their favorite place being Bermuda. Mary kept up her tradition of trips to Bermuda by taking her daughters back on three separate occasions, the last being this November, where they laughed for a week and Mary played in the ocean at Horseshoe Bay, which she considered the most beautiful beach in the world. She had also traveled to Alaska where she enjoyed white water rafting, and to Australia and New Zealand with Steve and granddaughter Kim. Other trips include a tour of the southwest as well as a trip down the Danube River with long time friend, Sandy Methven. Mary loved to travel and as recently as early March flew by herself to Florida to visit with family. At the age of 74, Mary decided to become a Stephen Minister with St. Johns? Church. She attended classes and a week long course in Orlando to become a leader. Up until the time of her death, Mary taught classes and counseled people through the Stephen Ministry. She made many dear friends through the Ministry. Mary was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, Walter; and her siblings, Jane Mackie and Jonathan Ingersoll. She is survived by her children, David McMahon, Steve McMahon and Grace Freije, Philip and Cheryl McMahon, Jane McMahon, Mary Ellen McMahon and Lenny Edmunds.
