"Jake" A. McDowell
....show
, 24, of Wheelock, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007, in Sutton, Vt. He was born May 18, 1982, in St. Johnsbury, the son of Randy and Debra (Gray) McDowell. His family writes that Jake loved spending time with family and friends and was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He spent a great deal of his childhood working on the farm with his father. He enjoyed running all of the farm equipment and could often be found on any summer day driving a tractor from one hay field to another. When Jake was 10, he started taking his tractor to the local fairgrounds and competed in the tractor pulls. He loved having family and friends come to these events, and especially enjoyed winning trophies. He graduated from Lyndon Institute in 2000. He and his lifelong friend, Katie Parker, made a memorable prom appearance in a Mack tractor-trailer, making the newspaper. Jake's greatest passion was racing #19 race car at Riverside Speedway in Groveton. Jake loved working in the garage on his car, getting it perfected for the races, tinkering with friends for hours until the day of the race. In 2006 Jake won Rookie of the Year and Reserve Championship. Next year's goal was to win a championship. He had so many plans for his car: a new paint job, new parts, and a new year just may have helped him win that title. He was very proud of all the trophies he had won and displayed them for all to see on "his side" of the garage. A few days before his death Jake spent two weeks in Florida with his grandparents, Dale and Nancy McDowell. While there he was able to visit Daytona, a lifelong dream, and took great joy telling his friends about it. Jake was a happy-go-lucky kid who lived life to the fullest. He thought the world of his grade school, high school, and racing friends. He is survived by his mother: Debbie McDowell of Wheelock, father Randy McDowell; two sisters: Stephanie DeCesare and partner Karen DeCesare of Orleans, and Meagan McDowell of Lyndonville; grandparents: Dale and Nancy McDowell of West Burke; niece Maya DeCesare; girlfriend Lisa Melvin of Lyndonville; aunts, uncles, and cousins. Visiting hours will be held at the Guibord Funeral Home, Friday from 6-8 p.m. Spring burial will be at Hillside Cemetery in West Burke. Marion Emerson (Morgan) Page
....show
, of Groton, Vt., author, registered nurse, ensign, USN, and exemplary member of The Greatest Generation, passed away Jan. 28, 2007. She is greatly missed by her family and friends. Marion was born and grew up in Middletown, N.Y., and earned her nursing degree at Vassar Brothers in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She was an ensign in the U.S. Navy during World War II, during which she married Roy T. Morgan, who died in 1961. Marion then set about raising her young family, John, Peggy and Barbara, on her own, and moved to Groton, Vt., returning to her nursing career at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, N.H. She married Raymond Page and they enjoyed a long and wonderful married life until he passed away two years ago. Her son, John, predeceased her in 1981; and son-in-law, Stan Williams, in 2001. Marion was multi-talented. She was a capable artist, an avid reader and an excellent writer. She valued education and taught her children to do likewise. She published many short stories over the years and in 1988, won Vermont Life's first Ralph Nading Hill prize for her story, "A Taste of New Sugar," about Civil War soldier William Scott. She was so knowledgeable about Groton's Civil War history that historian Howard Coffin consulted her for his book on Vermont in the Civil War. When she retired from nursing, she published two books for young adult readers, and had a third one in the works at her passing. She was active in a local writers group, and enjoyed volunteering at the Groton Public Library. Marion had a keen sense of duty, and did much volunteer community nursing, including as a "first responder" in several emergency situations. Typical of the best in her generation, Marion was immensely strong-willed and determined, but of gentle bearing. Her daughters admire her example very much and consider her one of the smartest, finest and most courageous of women. They are tremendously thankful that she taught them what really matters. She leaves her daughter, Peggy (Margaret) Williams of Lyndonville; and grandchildren Katherine and Steven; her daughter, Barbara Morrow and son-in-law Michael, of Sutton, and granddaughter Rachael; and John's children, Christian, Justin and Jesse Morgan. She is also missed by her sister, Ruth Emerson of Phoenix, Ariz.; niece Ariel Miner; and nephews Alan and Richard Emerson. Her brother, author Lucien Emerson (Peter Field), predeceased her. In addition, she had a special place in her heart for stepson and daughter-in law Deane and Bing (Laura) Page, a family who spent many caring hours with her and she with them; along with Garth and Georgiana Page and family, and Phyllis Miller and family. There will be no calling hours. The memorial service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m., at the Groton United Methodist Church, Groton, Vt., with the Rev. Candace Ricker, officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations to either the Groton Free Public Library or the Groton Historical Society, in care of Diana Kreis, 389 Scott Highway, Groton, VT, 05046, would be greatly appreciated.
