, 83, of North Monroe, N.H., died April 29, 2007, at Grafton County Nursing Home in North Haverhill. Dick was born Jan. 2, 1924, at his lifelong home in North Monroe, the son of Maurice and Pearl (Bort) Carter. He attended schools in Monroe and then went to McIndoes Academy, graduating in 1941. It was there that he met Jean Bailey, the love of his life. After his father died, Dick kept the farm going - at just 17! In 1943, Dick enlisted in the Navy, where he was a radioman during World War II. He then went to Baltimore to marry Jean Bailey. Dick and Jean then returned to their dairy farm in North Monroe, where they raised seven children - Richard Jr., Joanna, Mary, Daniel, Cynthia, Jennie and Heidi - and made many wonderful family memories. Dick loved his family, his farm, brook fishing, his John Deere tractors, his two large vegetable gardens, playing basketball and raising his Jersey cows. Father enjoyed views from his porch and walks up the back road. Pop was always there to help others out, and he did many times! When asked how they could repay him, he would just say - you'll help someone else! Dick was predeceased by Jean, his loving wife of 52 years in February 1999. He was also predeceased by his daughter, Cynthia in 1989; his son, Richard Jr. in 1994; his son, Daniel in 2002; a brother, Curtis "Bud" Carter; and a sister Ruth Griffin. He is survived by daughters, Joanna Aldrich (and Paul) of Campton; Mary Hinds (and Roger) of Bethlehem; Jennie Gawlak (and Casey) of New Milford, Conn.; and Heidi Carter and Carl Schofield of Sugar Hill; two sisters, Norma Baker and Nellie Choate; a devoted sister-in-law, Janet Bailey of West Lebanon; 10 beloved grandchildren. died April 17, 2007, in Wheelock, Vt. She was born Linda Louise Fikes in Manila, the Philippines, on July 3, 1937, to Mildred Genevieve O'Donnell and Orange James Fikes, who at the time of his death in 1948 in Sao Paolo, was the chief financial officer of Firestone. Linda attended high school in San Francisco and received a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Rochester in 1959. In 1960 she married Michael Victor Sherbrook, an officer in the Navy civil engineering corps, and with her teaching salary, supported him throughout his post-graduate studies in physics at the Enrico Fermi Institute of the University of Chicago. During that time she gave birth to two children, Jami Sherbrook and Victor Michael Sherbrook, in 1964 and 1966. A third child, Daniel Wolfenden Sherbrook, followed in 1971 after her husband found work at Lyndon State College and moved the family to the Stark district of St. Johnsbury. Linda taught primary school for years in San Francisco, Melrose, Mass., and inner-city Chicago. She held teacher certification in four states. Though she did not teach in Vermont, she worked for a time in the children's section of the Cobleigh Library in Lyndonville and more recently at Lyndon Town School as a para-educator. A great believer in public education, she was a stickler for accuracy and brooked no nonsense. She was a grammarian, a word-lover and an unstoppable reader. She found pleasure in detective novels, piano jazz and folk music. She was proud of her Irish-American heritage, and loved to celebrate holidays great and small. Most of all, she loved her husband, her children, and her two grandchildren, Evan Michael Sherbrook and Alex Victoria Sherbrook. Linda was a lady and a person of profound integrity. She devoted her life to others and did not speak of her own pain, which was considerable, particularly as she struggled with metastatic cancer over the last months of her life. Her smile, her laugh, and her grit endured throughout. At the end she was home in Wheelock with her family and her dog Annabelle at her feet. On Monday the 16th of April, a spring nor'easter shook the house for hours, ringing Linda's wind chimes through the night; when the the storm finally blew itself out toward dawn on Tuesday, the chimes were silent and she was gone. Ciao, Linda.

Scott (as his family called him) was born Aug. 26, 1952, in San Diego, Calif. He was the only son of retired and deceased Col. Bertram J. Ellis and former Army nurse and deceased Nell Dunlop Ellis. Scott leaves behind his only sister, Carroll Ellis Ruhlman and her husband, Donald, of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; his much-loved nieces, Jen Ruhlman Shepard and her husband, Jeremy of Kittery, Maine, and Leisha Ruhlman Daly and her husband, Sean, of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; his aunt, Patricia Kendall, who was his father's sister; his cousin, Mark Kendall of Palos Verdes, Calif; his cousin, Jan Kendall of Lodi, Calif.; his former wife and good friend, Francene Ellis; his stepson Lance Lodgdon, who is currently serving in the Navy. Scott also leaves behind his faithful friend and six-year companion Tiger the cat, who will always miss Scott but is currently beginning a new life with his new loving family. Scott graduated from Crawford High School in San Diego, Calif. He moved to St. Johnsbury in 1976 to be nearer his sister. In 1985, Scott took up residence in White River Junction and was employed by the U.S. Postal Service there where he worked until 2001 when he retired on a disability. Scott enjoyed bowling, car trips, collecting rare bills and coins and many fun times with his friends and co-workers at the post office. Scott was most proud of his sister and his two nieces, Jen and Leisha. He followed their lives with great pleasure and was delighted to be able to attend both of his nieces' weddings. Scott tackled and accomplished three difficult life goals that he was most proud of. He was alcohol-free for the last 13 years, cigarette-free for 23 weeks and was about to begin driving again following a right-leg amputation a year ago. He recently was awarded a driving certificate through the Adaptive Drive Associates, had his car left-foot adapted and was about to be independent again through driving. Scott's family wishes to acknowledge and thank his good friends Tom Houghton, Jan Timmons and Timmy Morris. They were constant and loyal friends, and without their assistance, Scott would never have been able to work toward his goal of health and independence. Scott was a quiet, gentle, kind and generous man, and though he rarely expressed it in words, he treasured his family, his good friends, kind neighbors and former co-workers at the post office. Scott's expressed wishes were cremation, and arrangements were made through Knight Funeral Home. Scott's ashes will be placed under a memorial tree at the home of his sister in a private ceremony with good friends and family present. Scott understood the importance of independence through driving, and a fund has been set up in his name to assist others to become independent through the Adaptive Driving Associates Program. Contributions can be made tot he John Scott Ellis Memorial Fund, c/o Mascoma Bank, P.O. Box 1274, White River Junction, VT 05001.

George Robert Tyler
....show
of Monroe, N.H., died on Saturday, May 12, 2007, at the Grafton County Nursing Home, North Haverhill, N.H., where he had been a resident for five years. He was 98 years old. The son of George Leon and May Sophronia (Gates) Tyler, he was born in West Newbury, Vt., on March 1, 1909. George was the oldest of three siblings, and outlived both his sisters, Eleanor and Jean. He graduated from Newbury High School, and earned a bachelor's degree in geology at Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio, and a master's in secondary administration at the University of Vermont. George Tyler had intended to spend his professional life as a geologist, but due to a revolution in Columbia (where he had a job after college) he changed to secondary education. In 1931, he accepted the job of principal at McIndoes Academy in McIndoe Falls, Vt., thereby becoming the youngest high school principal in the state at that time. After five years, at McIndoes he served as principal at Bakersfield's Bellows Academy, and in 1942 he became principal at Enosburg Falls High School, a position that he held for 15 years. In 1957, he moved his family back across the state to a former dairy farm in Monroe, N.H., again becoming principal of McIndoes Academy, where he remained until the Academy closed in 1969. When George left EFHS, the alumni presented him with a citation naming him as "Educator, Scholar, Gentleman," a fine summary of his highly successful work there. George influenced hundreds of students to learn to live wisely and courteously. He encouraged academic achievement in every individual. He was famous for not permitting certain cheers at basketball games that ridiculed the opposing team. One former student says that to this day when he sees a scrap of paper on the ground he picks it up, as George did. Himself a woodsman, he originated the hunter safety course that enabled students to maintain their course work and learn safe hunting practices for deer season. He was an active member and a chair of the Vermont Headmaster's Association. George's civic commitment was as strong as his belief in the potential of young people. In Enosburg, he was a member of the mens' club, taking part in musical shows and fund-raisers (remember donkey basketball?), and at the Methodist Church he was a trustee and head usher for many years. In Monroe, he was a school board member, a town representative to Woodsville's Cottage Hospital, a church official, and for 11 years he served as town moderator at town meetings. During his last 12 years as a principal at McIndoes Academy, he also began his second career, Christmas tree farming (the first in the area), and after the Academy closed, he devoted himself to it full time for almost 20 more years. He was a member of the VT-NH Christmas Tree Growers Association, and one year supplied the official Christmas tree to the New Hampshire State House in Concord. He particularly enjoyed talking with fairgoers while manning the association's booth at the Eastern States Exposition in Springfield, Mass. George and his wife, Esther, raised a family of five children, four of whom earned graduate degrees and became professionals in a variety of fields. The fifth child, John, died while serving as a musician in the U.S. Navy. Music was an important part of the family's life. Esther had been trained as a concert pianist, and all five children attended New England Music Camp in Maine for a number of years. Just after college, George had traveled to the Scandinavian countries and Russia, an experience that greatly impressed him and to which he referred often. After retiring from the Christmas tree business (and before Esther's death in 1999), he and Esther found time to travel, visiting the British Isles, the Holy Land, Egypt, Switzerland, and Austria where they attended the Oberammergau Passion Play. George's last years at the nursing home were quiet and confined to a wheelchair, but he retained the serenity and courtesy and pleasure in talking with people that had distinguished his life. He is survived by four children, Dr. Joan Mead, a retired college professor now living in Monroe, Gail Arnold, a staff member at the University of Michigan, Geoffrey Tyler, an engineer with Michelin Tire Company in South Carolina, and Damaris Tyler, a music teacher in the Thetford, Vt., area; also, son-in-law Dr. John Mead; daughter-in-law Anna Tyler; three grandchildren, Christopher Arnold, Dr. Ludmila Tyler, and Yaroslava Caldie; and as of last month, great-granddaughter Clara Caldie. There will be no visiting hours. The funeral service will be on Wednesday, May 16, at 2:30 p.m., at the Monroe Community Church in the village. Burial will be in the family plot in the Plains Road Cemetery, Monroe, N.H.

of Passumpsic passed away peacefully Friday, May 11, 2007, at The Pines in Lyndon with his entire family lovingly by his side. He was 80. He was born in St. Johnsbury on Christmas Day, 1926, one of five children born to Robert and Virginia (Montgomery) Meigs. He was raised by his sister Gertrude. A World War II veteran, Richard served in the U.S. Navy 1944-1946 as a machinist mate and spent time in Guam. On Aug. 3, 1946, he married Florence Buxton. They had four children. Dick began his career in the dairy business with Cabot Creamery followed by 43 years with Kilfasset Farms Dairy/Billings Dairy/Idlenot Dairy. He retired reluctantly in 1989. He actually began his working career at the age of 12 with Chesney's coal truck. Richard was a lifetime member of both VFW Post 793 and American Legion Post 58 and was a faithful supporter of veterans and patriotic affairs. He left St. Johnsbury Trade School at the age of 17 to join the Navy, not having been forthright about his age. St. Johnsbury Academy awarded him his honorary diploma in 2005. The word retirement was not in Dick's vocabulary. He spent the last 18 years as a driver for the L & T auto group. He thoroughly enjoyed the special friendships made at the dealerships and auctions. This career reluctantly ended in 2006 as result of vision difficulties. Richard had a great sense of humor and kept people around him smiling, a trait he passed on to his grandchildren. He loved his family around him. The little ones brought brightness to his eyes and a smile to his face. Even while ill, he managed to make the health care professionals smile. Richard was predeceased by his son, Ray 'Tim' Meigs, in 1969; sisters Gertrude Mackay and Ruth Granger, both in 1989; his brothers, Robert Meigs in 1963 and Carlyle Weston in 1980; a special nephew, Bobby Meigs in 1996; and niece Muriel Taylor in 2006. And let us not forget his beautiful bulldog Brutus. He leaves his devoted wife of over 60 years, Florence (162 Town Forest Road, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819); his daughters, Ruth York and husband, Norman, of Lyndonville, Carol Labounty and husband, Dwayne, of St. Johnsbury, and Nancy Young of South Wheelock; 14 grandchildren, Chauncey, Brian, and Karen, Charles, Laura, Tim, Katrina, Merton, Theresa, Jennifer, and Michael, Staci, Ginger and Adam; 26 (plus!) great-grandchildren; and many special nieces, nephews, and friends.
