Mr. Dalley was born November 8, 1927, in Moretown, a son of Winfield Scott Dalley Sr. and Helen (Phillips) Dalley. On October 4, 1950, he married Ethel Hess in Johnson. They moved to the Northeast Kingdom, and Mr. Dalley worked as an inspector for the U.S. Customs Service for 30 years in Derby Line, Island Pond, and Norton. He was a member of Island Pond Lodge No. 44 of Free and Accepted Masons for more than 40 years. Having been past master two times, he was a member of the Past Masters Association. Two years ago he received a plaque honoring him for 27 years as treasurer for the Island Pond Lodge. He was also a member of the Mount Sinai Temple and was often seen driving their Northeast Fire Brigade trucks in parades. He was active in the Lions Club for many years. He was one of the original members of the Derby club and was an officer in the Island Pond Club for many years. He enjoyed doing a lot of traveling while he held a state office. He was a member of the Newport Elk's Club for many years. While living in Island Pond he was an active worker and a trustee of the Congregational church. He served on Island Pond's industrial committee, which was responsible for bringing Ethan Allen to Island Pond. He loved the Northeast Kingdom and always enjoyed skiing, snowmobiling, hunting, and fishing. Braunda Elaine Darling Coutu
....show
, 71, of Newport died May 2, 2006, in Newport. Mrs. Coutu was born January 29, 1935, in St. Johnsbury, a daughter of Roderic Darling and Elaine (Fairbanks). Through a clerical error she lived her life with January 27 as her birthday, which is an interesting footnote to an interesting person's life. She grew up in the shadow of the Fairbanks mansion in St. Johnsbury. Her mother was a Fairbanks, but of a different branch of the family from the wealthy ones. Later, when the family moved to Lyndonville, again they found themselves with a prominent name, but with no connection to the monied Darlings. In Caledonia County, she was the poor girl with the rich names. She moved to Newport when her father was transferred to the railroad's freight office, after her freshman year of high school. At Newport High School she was active in theater and the band, where she played just about anything. She also sang in the chorus and a barbershop quartet. After high school she attended Tufts University in Boston. On June 11, 1955, she married Joseph Coutu Jr. They were married for 49 years. He predeceased her on June 25, 2003. From their union, five children and 12 grandchildren have come into this world. She is survived by her children: Daniel and his friend, Cathline Ruff, of Derby, Michael and his wife, Chieko, of Newport, Charles of Chateauguay, New York, Catherine Garrison and her husband, Steve, of Waterboro, Maine, and Ronald and his friend, Donna Tiedeman, of North Troy; by grandchildren: Hayato, Richard, Robert, Christopher, Matthew, Dawn, Stephen, Corey, Marc, and BryeaCoutu and Gretchen Garrison; and by a tremendous number of friends and extended family. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her sister Lorraine Heath and by nephew Dale Kelley. She was a mother to every child in the neighborhood, whether on Orchard Street or the Bluffs. Fiesty to the end, she never failed to accomplish whatever she set her mind to do. Her spirit and vigor set an example for her family and the community in a way that has touched lives forever. She was a musician, a knitter extraordinaire, and the founder of both the Newport and Sacred Heart alumni associations. Donations to either association would be very much in line with her wishes. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church May 6.
