In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Spartanburg Humane Society, 150 Dexter Road, Spartanburg, SC 29303. Mom, known to her friends as Peggy or Peg, was a remarkable person. In her nearly 90 years of life, she was a spiritual light and mentor to many people. We, her three surviving children, remember her as fiercely independent with a passionate commitment to nurturing and protecting our true selves ... Teaching us to question authority and look within for a deeper guidance. She was deeply intuitive and inquiring into the psychological and spiritual nature of life, and fostered in us a profound sense of the Mystery, and faith in the Truth which passes understanding. She loved nature and all the natural ways of being, was a gifted artist and creative writer, a social and political activist for peace and justice. She spent many years working in the field of social work where she put her gifts of humanness, vulnerability and a capacity for unconditional love to good service. Tom Chesbrough, her surviving husband and true love, describes her as "full of love, compassion and understanding." And, also as someone who had definite values with strong beliefs and ideals. She was an avid reader of spiritual, metaphysical and philosophical literature, and could often be quite insistent in her desire to discuss those ideas with him. These discussions were often an opportunity to engage in the healthy spirit of irony and humor and playfulness. Tom says, "We always went to bed holding hands, I will miss her terribly."

, 91, was discovered deceased at her home in Melbourne, Fla., on May 27, 2006, by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Kay Nelson. Having been under around-the-clock care of her son, Herbert Nelson, she died of hypothermia when briefly left unattended on an outside patio following Herbert's unexpected death from natural causes. Having suffered a stroke the previous winter, she was not able to care for herself. Priscilla Frances Lund was born to Walter Carlos Lund and Drucilla Elfleda Chandler on Aug. 3, 1914, in Haverhill, N.H. She married Philip Ezra Nelson on May 14, 1938, in Dorchester, Mass. They had two sons, Richard Hugh Nelson and Herbert Walter Nelson. She supported her husband, Philip, in running their farm known as "Maple Hill Farm" in North Monroe, N.H., until 1947, when they sold the Nelson-established homestead. While traveling, "to see the West," they lived on a ranch in the vicinity of Walla Walla, Wash., where Priscilla assumed the job of ranch cook. Upon returning to the East, they settled in Holbrook, Mass., where Philip managed a dairy farm. Always forward looking, Priscilla obtained a degree as a licensed practical nurse and with Philip's support, established a nursing home in Holbrook, Mass. Following this successful enterprise, she established the Nelson Nursing Home, consisting of 30 beds, in Brookline, Mass. After Philip's death in 1967, she returned to her roots in Granby, Vt., where she operated a two-bed nursing home. Following this, she operated a similar establishment in Melbourne, Fla. In recent years, she has spent her summers in Victory, Vt., an environment she richly enjoyed. She will be remembered as a devoted wife and mother, for her loving kindness to all who crossed her path, for being extremely hard working, industrious and forward-looking, for her integrity and strong religious faith, and for her home cooking that included light-crusted pies of all kinds. She is survived by her son, Richard, her daughter-in-law, Kay Nelson; three grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two nephews and one niece. A memorial service will be held at the Monroe United Methodist Church in North Monroe, N.H., at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2006.
