, 80, of East Burke, Vt., died Sunday, June 4, 2006, at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndon, Vt. He was born Feb. 8, 1926, in Townshend, Vt., son of the late Earl and Ada (Lane) Derry. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Europe, seeing action at the Battle of the Bulge. Except for a brief early period spent farming, his working career was connected with the lumbering industry. Before moving to Lyndonville with his first wife, Thelma, in the mid-1960s, he worked for Brattleboro area employers, including as a hardwood lumber grader and in the trucking department for Woodard Lumber. In 1965 he bought a sawmill in East Burke. His association with the mill continued for the next 25 years, first as sole proprietor of Monarch Lumber Co. until the mill burned in 1971, and then as manager of a rebuilt mill for Koppers Co., and as a partner in Northern Wood Products. Jerry was an entrepreneur. During the 1980s he and his second wife Elaine (Welch), whom he married in 1968, operated a bed and breakfast on Kirby Road in East Burke. Jerry worked as an independent lumber broker in the early 1990s, which led to his starting J & J Lumber Co., a building materials retail sales yard in East Burke. Due to his failing health this family-operated business closed in 2002. For several years he enjoyed spending time at his camp on Big Averill Lake, ice fishing and snowmobiling, and later he and Elaine wintered several seasons in Clearwater, Fla. Jerry's community service included 18 years of work on the Town of Burke Board of Listers. Survivors include his wife, Elaine W. Derry of East Burke, Vt.; a foster daughter, Donna (Flynn) Gragen of Brattleboro; three stepchildren: Laurelie (Welch) Chapman and her husband Dennis of Ketchikan, Alaska, Lyle "Jerry" Welch and his wife Lynn of Burke Hollow, and Lauren "Joe" Welch and his wife Anne of East Burke; several grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a sister-in-law, Helen Derry of Brattleboro; a brother-in-law, Dwight Henry of Brattleboro; several nieces and nephews. Barry Andrew McCormick
....show
, CPA, 64, of Lyndonville, passed away surrounded by family and friends on June 3, 2006, after a courageous battle with a rare lung disorder. Barry was born on April 4, 1942 on Long Island, N.Y. to Calvin and Gwendolyn Harvey McCormick. As a young child, Barry's father - much to the chagrin of his mother - taught him to introduce himself as "Barry Andrew McCormick, a very remarkable fellow." And remarkable he was. He spent his childhood in the quaint seaside town of Northport, N.Y., moving with his family to Houston, Texas, as a young teen. There he gained local fame, starring as a regular dancer on an American Bandstand-style television show. From Texas, he returned to the New York City area, where he attended Pace University, was married, and landed a job as an accountant on Wall Street. In 1968, he gave up his Manhattan career and headed to Vermont, where his innate determination, self-direction, fair-mindedness and dry sense of humor quickly found their true home. A real self-made man, Barry passed his CPA on the first try, and in 1970 joined as partner with Donnelly & McCormick in Bradford. He quickly grew the accounting firm as McCormick & Company, to its current locations in St. Johnsbury and Bradford, with satellite offices at one time in Lancaster and Littleton, N.H. Barry loved his life in the Northeast Kingdom, skiing Burke Mountain, dining out with family, and relaxing at his beloved house on Lake Memphremagog. He was a well-respected and active member of the community, donating his resources and time, most recently to the Lyndon State College Foundation, of which he was treasurer. Barry was greatly loved and will be deeply missed by his longtime companion, Beverly Simblest; his daughter, son-in-law and grandson, Janice, Theodore and Sven Gangsei of Staten Island, N.Y.; his son and daughter-in-law Drs. Gregory McCormick and Monica Fiorenza of Shelburne; his brother Dennis McCormick of Reston, Va.; sister Judi Joiner of Houston, Texas; sister Marcia Tomlinson of Bradford; and many nieces, nephews and friends. A service commemorating Barry's remarkable life will be held Thursday, June 8, at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Lyndonville, followed immediately by a celebration in his honor. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made in his memory to the Lyndon State College Foundation at PO Box 919, Lyndonville, VT 05851; or the American Lung Association at 61 Broadway, NY, NY 10006. There will be no calling hours.
