A special thought for gram, Isn't it odd how the complexity of life could be so - simple? So - original ... so saddening ... When a life is lost it brings tears to your eyes. A gap is created in the place of the lost life. An empty hole ready to be stored in your heart, to be locked but ... never forgotten, an imprint so deep it compels itself. -- By Thomas Francis

, a longtime resident of Marblehead, Mass., died Dec. 26, 2006. She was born on Sept. 5, 1928. A lifelong sailor, scuba diver, swimmer, and steward of the oceans, Elizabeth (Betty) Perry was happiest on, in or under the ocean. She will be remembered by family and friends for her love of the water, her independent spirit, and her insatiable appetite for eco and adventure travel. A longstanding member of the Eastern Yacht Club and its race committee, Betty enjoyed near legendary status for skippering her beloved 35-foot sloop "Redstart" throughout the waters of New England well into her 70s. Cruising the coast of Maine and the Elizabeth Islands were among her greatest pleasures. In her younger years she was a competitive racer in the both the Jolly Boat and IOD classes. The daughter of Horace Burrough III and Barbara B. (Sherman) Burrough, Betty attended Brimmer May and Dana Hall and graduated from Connecticut College in 1950 with a B.A. in Philosophy. She was married to Allen E. Perry for 30 years with whom she raised their three children, Mitch of Dalton, N.H., Priscilla Danforth of Marblehead, and John of Falmouth. She is survived by her children and five grandchildren. Betty's love of the ocean and her concerns for its health for future generations drew her to the New England Aquarium at its inception in 1968. For nearly 40 years she actively served on committees concerning animal policy, long-range planning, marine animal rescue, conservation, cultural diversity and planned giving. She was a past president of the NEAq Associates Board and served as a Trustee of the Aquarium from 1979-2002. She was the first woman to scuba dive in the Aquarium's great ocean tank and traveled with NEAq teams on numerous collecting trips in the waters off Bimini. She founded the Aquarium's Pisces Press and served as a writer and editor of the publication. Betty will be remembered fondly for her role as surrogate mother to two orphaned Harbor seals, "Ruff" and "Julie" at her home in Marblehead. Under the auspices of the Aquarium, she nursed these young seals back to health with herring milkshakes and daily swims in tide pools near her home. Given her love for marine life, it is quite fitting that her final trip before taking ill was with the Aquarium's Right Whale Research Project to Lubec, Maine, in late August. A celebratory reception for friends, family and colleagues will be held in Betty's honor. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the New England Aquarium, Development Office, Boston, MA 02110 or WGBH, Attn: Mary Moran, 125 Western Ave., Boston, MA 02134.

, 37, died unexpectedly Jan. 29, 2006, at his residence in Aliso Viejo, Calif., following a brief illness. He was born in Burlington, June 28, 1968, to William H. Carpenter Sr. and Priscilla R. Carpenter. Billy was the fifth child and second son in the family. He was adored by his three older sisters and worshiped and looked up to his older brother, John. Billy grew up on Ethan Allen Parkway in the North End of Burlington. He attended C.P. Smith Elementary School, Lyman C. Hunt Middle School and graduated from Burlington High School in 1986. While in grade school and middle school, Billy was involved in Little League, Cub Scouts and later Boy Scouts. He was an altar boy at St. Mark's Church and participated in their bowling league. He delivered the Burlington Free Press for several years during high school. He was involved in the Burlington International Games, as well. In high school, Billy played sax in the band, was involved in several school plays, ran the 3000 and sometimes the 1500 on the track team, skied on the cross country ski team, but most importantly, he excelled in cross country running, finishing second in the state his junior year as well as fourth in the New England Competition. Billy first attended the University of Rhode Island where he ran cross country. He later transferred to the University of Vermont where he majored in dietetics. After graduation, in 1992, he continued with his studies to receive a master's degree in nutritional sciences from UVM in 1993. He earned his registered dietitian credentials with an internship at the University of Alabama, at Birmingham: Birmingham, Ala., in 1995. He then returned to work as a research dietitian and research study coordinator in the Department of Medicine, University of Vermont. He did a significant amount of research on childhood obesity before it was even a household word. Billy moved to California in 1997 to work for Met-Rx, a company founded by Scott Connelly, M.D., which emphasized physical fitness, good nutrition and athletic performance. His job included training many professional athletes who respected his knowledge and expertise. He was one of a team who contributed to Dr. Connelly's book "BODY Rx." He and Dr. Connelly were about to embark on another book - a venture that Billy was very excited about. His name is on numerous professional publications and abstracts, as well. In 2002, when Met-Rx was sold, Billy went to northern California to work for Berkeley Heart Lab, Inc. in Burlingame, Calif. He was employed as product manager, diet and exercise. He responded to inquiries from physicians and patients, participated and researched design marketing materials. Billy was a results-oriented, hands-on product developer and consumer education professional in the clinical/consumer goods nutritional industry. Needless to say, his family has always been extremely proud of him. Performance, fitness, knowledge and excellence were of foremost importance to Billy. Next were connections to family and friends. He was on the phone and the Internet - a lot - keeping in touch with everyone. He leaves his loving parents, Bill and Priscilla, both of Burlington; sisters, Allyson Yandow and her husband Chris of South Burlington and their daughters Meghan, Sarah and Lauren, Shelley Spillane and her husband Chip of Shelburne and their children Tucker, Summer and Kidder, and Llynne Kiernan and her husband Joe of Randolph and their children Erin and James; his brother, John and his wife Lindy of Fairfax and their daughters Austen and Chace. He leaves, as well, a large extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins. Billy will be missed by a very devoted friend, Deb Klipper; hunting and fishing buddies, Gavin Cook and Marc Denton; his former boss and good friend, Dr. Scott Connelly; a collegiate friend while in the UVM master's program, Paul Arcieo; longtime friend, Linda Black Jeffery; as well as co-workers and the many friends he has made over the years. He was godfather to Marc's son, Curtis. In addition to his intellectual pursuits, Billy loved the great outdoors and all of nature. His annual trip to Vermont in November allowed him to see his family over the Thanksgiving holiday, but also included time to deer hunt in Craftsbury. His life was far too short, yet he lived it to the fullest - always with a sense of adventure, curiosity, love and respect for his fellow man. He had many good experiences and impressive accomplishments. He will be missed and never forgotten by his parents, sisters and brother, nieces and nephews, relatives and many, many friends. Visiting hours will be Tuesday, Feb. 7, from 4-7 p.m. at Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home on South Union Street in Burlington. Funeral will be at St. Mark's Catholic Church on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, family and friends are encouraged to make a contribution to the B.H.S. Athletic Association.
