Verne H. Eastman
....show , 78, of Railroad Street, died Wednesday afternoon, May 31, 2006, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon.
Mrs. Eastman was born in Wyandotte, Michigan, on August 4, 1927, the daughter of Wilbur and Flossie (Corrigan) Hartford, and has resided most of her lifetime in Lancaster.
On January 24, 1953 she married Aloysius Eastman Jr. of Jefferson. For 22 years they resided at various bases during his military career until returning to Lancaster.
Verne was a graduate of Lancaster Academy and went on to graduate from the St. Louis School of Nursing in Berlin. Her nursing career includes employment at the VA Hospital in White River Jct. and Week Memorial Hospital, Lancaster. She was best known for her years as a school nurse in Lancaster and Jefferson. She retired from in 1988.
She was a very active member of the Christ United Methodist Church, Lancaster, and the United Methodist Women of Lancaster. She was also an active member of the Olive Branch Chapter #1 O.E.S. Verne served many years as a Girl Scout Leader and was an accomplished quilter and member of the Coos Quilters Guild. She was also a good cook and famous for her chicken pie.
Family members include her husband Aloysius of Lancaster; a daughter Tracy E. Lang and husband Elmer of Milan; two sons, Richard A. Eastman and wife Sharon of West Palm, Florida, Craig Eastman of Lancaster; a brother Wilbur Hartford of Wolfeboro; two grandchildren, Nicole Eastman and Nathan Eastman; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Memorial visiting hours will be held Friday evening June 2, from 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster, and an Eastern Star service will be conducted at 7:00 PM. A memorial service will be held Saturday morning at 10:30 AM at the Christ United Methodist Church, Rev. Dr. Thomas W. Bentum, pastor will officiate. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Summer Street Cemetery, Lancaster.

Samuel C. P. Baldwin

Mr. Baldwin was born in Pensacola, Florida, on February 4, 1925, the son of William Lester and Irene (Pinney) Baldwin.
Samuel was raised in Baltimore, Maryland, he attended John Hopkins University and was a graduate of Washington College and the University of Maryland School of Law. He practiced law in Baltimore for many years and was the founder of the Baltimore Rowing Club. For the past 2 years he has resided in Lancaster.
Family members include his wife Alice (Bowdin) Baldwin of Lancaster; two sons, Samuel C. P. Baldwin Jr. of Hollywood, MD, William Baldwin of Baltimore, MD; three daughter; Rosemary Hendricks, Sally Sager, both of Baltimore, MD, Eliza Vernazza of Chatham, NJ; a brother Richard Baldwin of Floyd Knobs, IN; 11 grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife Christine (Maynard) Baldwin.

Michael D. Challinor
....show , 49, of North Road, died Friday May 19, 2006, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster surrounded by his family after a long courageous battle with scleroderma.
Mr. Challinor was born in Putnam, Connecticut, on June 27, 1956, the son of Donald Challinor and Gloria (Tetrault) MacKenzie.
Michael was a resident of Connecticut until moving to New Hampshire in 1986. He has worked most of his lifetime as a carpenter and has been employed with Lemieux Construction, Jefferson, and Brooks Builders, Lancaster. In 1993 he was diagnosed with scleroderma and forced to retire due to ill health. During his life he enjoyed working with kids and has coached many local teams in various sports and volunteered his time as a Cub Scout Scoutmaster.
Family members include his wife Sandra L. (Kingman) Challinor of Jefferson; four children, Melissa R. Peters and husband Ben of Landaff, Timothy Michael Challinor and wife Tiffany of Jefferson, Matthew R. Challinor and wife Ebony of McChord AFB, Washington, Heather Holly Challinor of Jefferson; five grandchildren, Rebecca, Travis, Aviara, Carissa, Eamon; a step-father, James MacKenzie Sr. of Connecticut; five brothers, David MacKenzie of NH, Robert Challinor of OH, Dennis Challinor, James MacKenzie Jr., and William MacKenzie, all of CT; three sisters, Brenda Aiken, Kathleen Fague, and Pam Sargent all of CT; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother Richard Challinor.

John L. "Jack" Gordon
....show of Jefferson died Friday, May 19, 2006, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center after a brief illness. He was 69.
Born in Bethlehem, Jack lived his whole life in the North Country. Much of his youth and young adulthood was spent skiing too fast at Cannon Mountain. A master bricklayer by trade, Jack was also an avid reader, woodsman, canoeist, fly fisherman and especially golfer. Most of all, he was an excellent husband and father who took his family hiking, fishing, canoeing, and cross country skiing and set a fine example of a hard-working, New England individualist. His sometimes gruff exterior masked a kind man of great empathy and humility. If you were stuck in a ditch or a snow-bank, Jack was always the guy who would stop and haul you out.
Jack is survived by his wife, Linda (Potter); a son Matt of Whitefield, a daughter Sarah of Atlanta, Georgia; a sister Lee Stillings of Canterbury, NH, and three grandchildren.
There will be no services.

Marilyn "Yo" Charlette
....show , 47, of Maple Street, died Friday morning May 12, 2006, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon.
Mrs. Charlette was born in Saint Johnsbury, Vermont on August 2, 1958, the daughter of Herbert and Marion (Boutwell) Berry.
Marilyn lived in Newport, NH for 20 years before moving to Groveton in 1998.
Yo worked as a crossing guard in Newport for 6 years and for a time raised dogs. She was a good Mom, enjoyed camping, campfires, gardening, and daily visits with friends at the Double SS Restaurant.
Family members include her husband Don Charlette of Groveton; two daughters, Stephanie Linn of Berlin and Chastity Haycock and her husband Tim of Groveton; three grandchildren, Kyle, Zachary, and Dakota; her father Herbert of East Concord, VT; two sisters, Elogene Rodger of Concord, VT and Arizona, Christine Moore of Dalton; a brother Edward Berry of East Concord, VT, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother in 2004.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday morning at 11:00 AM at the East Concord Methodist Church. Reverend Henry E. Cheney, will officiate. Burial will be held at a later date in the Overlook Cemetery, East Concord.

Evelyn M. (Thompson) Hutchinson
....show , 59, died peacefully at her home with her family at her bedside, Tuesday morning June 27, 2006, after a long battle with lung disease.
Mrs. Hutchinson was born in Lancaster on October 21, 1946, the daughter of Alvin "Ike" Thompson and Norma (Lund) Thompson.
Evelyn resided most of her lifetime in the North Country, including Lancaster, Whitefield, and for the past 25 years, in Groveton. She was employed off and on at shoe and other factories. However, she was very talented in interior design, cake decorating, and woodworking. Her other hobbies included gardening, yard saleing, and arts & crafts. Most of her life was spent giving to others in any way that she could. She dedicated herself to her husband and only daughter, and later, to her two beloved grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Donald Hutchinson; one daughter, Samantha Laundry and her companion, Jeffrey McMann; two grandchildren, Kailene and Evan Laundry all of Groveton, three sisters, Patricia Dupont of Concord, NH, Carol Coolbeth and her husband William of East Lempster, NH, Amber Thompson of Groveton; one brother, Calvin Thompson and his wife Cheryl of Dalton; one aunt, several nieces and nephews, many cousins. She was predeceased by, both her parents, as well as, her stepparents, Dick and Dorothy Mayberry.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday afternoon and evening June 29, from 2-4 and 7-9, at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. ....show , 70, of Powder Hill Drive, died at her home, Friday morning June 23, 2006. Beatrice was born in Lancaster on January 2, 1936, the daughter of Frank H. and Jean M. (Willson) Downing.
Bea spent most of her life in Lunenburg, she worked as a teachers aid at the Lunenburg Elementary, and as a Home Health Aid for Weeks Home Health, Lancaster. She has resided in Lancaster for the past 10 years.
She enjoyed reading, loved her cat "Tigger", and spending time with her family and friends.
Family members include her children; Deborah Thomas and her husband Edson of Lunenburg, Joan Lyon and her husband Roy of East Concord, VT, Crystal Lewis of Lancaster, Terry Mark Lewis of Bethlehem, and Karen Lewis of Lunenburg; two brothers; Malcolm F. Gardner H. Balch Sr.

Mr. Balch was born in Lunenburg, Vermont, on July 20, 1924, the son of Charles H. and Bernice (Young) Balch.
Gardner resided most of his lifetime in Lunenburg attending schools there and in Dalton. During WWII he served in the Army Air Corp in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He had several occupations during his life including farmer, building contractor, brick mason, and millwright. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and Red Sox fan.
He was a longtime volunteer fireman with the Lunenburg Fire Department and member of the Moose River Masonic Lodge, Concord.
Family members include his wife Beverly P. Balch of Lunenburg, four sons; Gardner H. Balch Jr., of Lunenburg, Stephen M. Balch of Hinsdale, NH, Howard C. Balch of Gilman, Lee D. Balch, of Lunenburg; two daughters; Sharon Thurston of Lancaster, Dianthe G. Charron of Tampa, FL; a sister Winonah Wood of Winchendon, MA; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by, his sister Augusta Bacon and a granddaughter Desiree Balch.

Mr. Walker was born in Fitchburg, MA, on January 12, 1948, the son of John H. and Phyllis M. (Valcourt) Walker.
Alan was raised in Massachusetts and attended school in Townsend, MA. At 18 years old he enlisted in the US Army and served 7 years including a tour in Germany. He returned to Mass for a short time then moved to Lancaster in the early 70s. Various employments included Brown Street Furniture, Josselyns Saw Mill, and from 1992 to 2004 he was employed with the Town of Lancaster. He also worked with his brother Kenneth for a time building log homes.
Family members include a son Armond Walker and his wife Barbara of Lunenburg; a daughter Amber Walker of Guildhall; his mother Phyllis of Townsend, MA; four brothers, Kenneth Walker and wife Madeline of Lancaster, Bruce Walker and wife Lynn of Jaffrey, Wayne Walker and companion Patty of Berwick, ME, Stanley Walker and wife Josephine of Berwick, ME; three sisters, Lorraine Woodman and husband Dale of Rindge, Ferne West and companion John Walsh of Fitchburg, MA, Christine Gould and husband Robert of Wolfeboro; a granddaughter Katelynn Walker; his former wife Ethel R. George Edwin Gray
....show , 89, of Main Street, died Tuesday June 6, 2006, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster.
Mr. Gray was born in East Hereford, Quebec, Canada, on April 25, 1917, the son of Samuel and Vera (Rowell) Gray.
George moved from Canada when he was a year old and was raised in Canaan, VT, Charlestown, NH and Lancaster. During WWII he served with the US Army in Panama. In 1953 he moved to Lunenburg and in 1957 he started Grays Mobile, which he owned and operated for 29 years. After retirement he worked part time as a deliveryman for Sanels in Lancaster.
He was a member of the North Star Lodge #8 F&AM of Lancaster; American Legion Post #41of Gilman, John W. Weeks VFW Post # 3041of Lancaster; Eagles Club, Loyal Order of Moose of St. Johnsbury; Lunenburg Polar Bears and Gilman Senior Citizens.
Family members include his beloved companion, Helen Boulay of Lunenburg; a daughter, Patricia Bashaw of Charlestown, NH; a brother Stanley Gray of East Charlestown; a sister Hattie York of Northumberland, 3 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by, his wife Arlene (Cross) Gray; four siblings, Neil Gray, Herbert Gray, Rose Weymouth, and Christina Royce.

Mr. Malloy was born in Berlin, NH on February 16, 1930, the son of Andrew and Helen (Walsh) Malloy Sr.
Andrew was a graduate of Lancaster Academy and Norwich University, Northfield, VT, Class of 1952 where he was a member and officer of Sigma Nu fraternity. He had been a Cheshire resident since 1970, moving there from East Longmeadow, MA. He was a retired Adjuster/Manager of Commercial Union and Atlantic Mutual Insurance companies.
Active in the community, he was a founding member of the Cheshire High School Marching Band Parents group, a former officer of the Cheshire Lions Club, and a Life Member of the Cheshire Volunteer Fire Department and was named Rotary Fireman of the Year. Professionally, he was a past officer and member of the Springfield, Worcester, MA and New Haven, CT Claim Managers Councils and a member of the Managers Board of Arbitration.
Family members include his wife of 55 years, Eleanor Dede (Emery) Malloy; three sons; Andrew Malloy III of Los Angeles, CA, Mark Malloy and Sean Malloy both of Cheshire, CT; two daughters; Kathleen Sevedge of Columbia, MO, and Beth DeFiore of Thomaston, CT; 11 grandchildren; and a sister Miriam Keenan of Ayer, MA. He was predeceased by, a daughter Marilyn Malloy.

George B. Birt
....show , 87, of River Road, died Sunday evening July 23, 2006, after complications from a stroke, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster.
Mr. Birt was born in London, Ohio, on June 2, 1919, the son of George W. and Valerie (Shaffer) Birt.
George was a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, earning a Bachelors Degree in business, while in college he was a Proctor of the freshman dorm and was active in sports. During WWII he served in the Army Air Corp.
He was employed by Firestone in New Castle, PA where he worked as a sales manager, Johnson & Johnson as a Lumite Division Manager, and for Columbus Mills Carpet, as a National Sales Manager. For thirteen years he was the owner of the Wine Shop in Darien, CT., and the President of the Chamber of Commerce, as well as a member of the Rotary. When he retired he moved to Lunenburg, where he co-owned a farm with his son Richard and daughter in-law Christine. He also continued a membership in Rotary, becoming a Paul Harris Fellow, and was a marketing mentor for P.J Noyes.
Family members include his wife of 63 years, Dorothy (Kehrer) Birt of Lunenburg, a daughter Diane Lis of Southbury, CT; two sons, George Birt Jr. of Dayton, OH, and Richard Birt of Lunenburg, three grandchildren.

Lester "Tony" Collins
....show , 64, of Page Hill Road, died Thursday morning, July 20, 2006 after a six and a half year battle with cancer, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster.
Mr. Collins was born in Lancaster, on August 8, 1941, the son of Parker C. and Blanche I. (Smith) Collins Jr.
Tony was raised in Lancaster, he was a 1959 graduate of Lancaster Academy; he went on to meat-cutting school in Toledo, Ohio graduating in 1962. He was employed as a meat-cutter and manager of IGA in Concord, NH, while in Concord he met and married his wife Nellie (Rowell) in 1971. He moved back to Lancaster in 1974, where he was employed by, C.B. Cummings in Groveton and later worked for the New Hampshire Dept. of Transportation as an assistant foreman, until his retirement in December of 2002.
He loved hunting and passed his skills onto his son Jeff, he also loved fishing and sharing his catch with neighbors and friends, he enjoyed watching cooking shows and the races on television.
Family members include his wife Nellie of Lancaster; a son Jeffrey Collins and his companion Kristen Kenison, of Lancaster; a daughter Christie Kecskemethy of Pennsylvania; a sister; Betty Reed and her husband Claude of Lancaster, his step-mother Carol Collins; two half brothers, Parker "Mickey" and David all of Lancaster, a half sister Cathy of Groveton; mother in-law Myrtle Rowell of Sawyerville, Quebec, Canada; many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Louise Hicks
....show , 91, died Sunday July 16, 2006 at Coos County Nursing Home, West Stewartstown.
Mrs. Hicks was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts on May 8, 1915, the daughter of Paul Louis and Pansy Jennette (Bradley) Quimby.
Dorothy was raised in Haverhill, and attended school there. She also attended the University of Massachusetts, and worked for New England Telephone Company for 38 years as a field clerk. She moved to the North Country in 1987.
She was a member of the Newton Junction Baptist Church, Newton Junction, MA.
Family members include 3 nephews, many cousins, and family friends, Kenneth and Barbara Dobson of Jefferson. She was predeceased by her, husband Willard Kendrick Hicks.

Bethany A. McMann
....show , 51, of Shirley Hill Road passed away on Sunday July 16, 2006, after a long illness, surrounded by her family at Elliot Hospital, Manchester.
Mrs. McMann was born in Lancaster on December 5, 1954, the daughter of Nicholas and Sylvia (Holden) Stone.
Bethany was raised in Groveton and was a graduate of Groveton High School, where she was a member of the national honor society. She was employed by, the State Liquor Store for a time, the Berlin City Bank and was also a volunteer at Weeks Hospital in Lancaster. In her spare time she loved doing cross-stitch and spending time with her family. She loved, people and friends, her doors were always open.
She was stricken by illness in May 2001, and her longtime caregiver was her sister Jane whom she lived with.
Family members include her parents of Groveton, a daughter; Jill Terry and her husband Tom of Manchester, Connecticut; a son Justin McMann and his wife Nicole of Groveton; three grandchildren; Luke Terry, Lexie McMann, and Nolan McMann; two brothers, Charles Stone of Healy, Alaska, Shaun Stone of Jacksonville, FL; two sisters Jane Boudle of Manchester and Tammy Stone of Spofford; many nieces, nephews and her former husband Charles McMann.

Marie Kazmirchuk
....show , 86, of Dalton Road, died suddenly Saturday morning July 15, 2006, at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster.
Mrs. Kazmirchuk was born in Dalton on April 24, 1920, the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Gaudette) Pilotte.
Marie was a lifetime resident of Dalton. During her life she was employed for a time at Sanders Sawmill, Whitefield, and Sweets Brush and Handle, Littleton.
She was a member of the Grange, the VFW Auxiliary, and the Dalton Historical Society.
Family members include two daughters, Elaine Duranty of Portsmouth, RI, Brenda Kazmirchuk of Manchester, NH; a sister Philomen Pilotte of Dalton; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two nephews and a niece. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph Kazmirchuk in 1999.
Visiting hours will be held Wednesday evening July 19, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A funeral service will be held Thursday morning at 10:00 AM at the funeral home. Rev. Virginia Alvarez, pastor of the Dalton Congregational Church will officiate. Burial will follow in the Cushman Cemetery, Dalton.
