, 87, of North Troy died in Newport on Sunday, April 2, 2006. Mr. Plourde was born in Fall River, Massachusetts, on December 3, 1918, a son of Charles and Mary (Gifford) Plourde. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a veteran of World War II. He worked as a flight instructor and a mechanic and owned and operated a garden shop in Westport, Massachusetts. He and his wife owned and operated the North Troy Inn Bed and Breakfast. He was certified by the Federal Aviation Agency and was a former member of the Jay Peak Area Association. He loved to tinker, listen to music, write short stories, and fly. On March 2, 1946, he married Juliette Emond, who predeceased him on July 11, 2003. He is survived by his daughter Madeline Leary of North Troy; and by his granddaughter Meaghan Leary of Newport. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 6, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Darling Hill Road in Newport at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Jerome Mercure officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. Interment will take place at the Notre Dame Cemetery in North Troy with full military honors. , 85, of Newport Center died at his home on Monday, March 27, 2006. Mr. Hill was born in Haverhill, New Hampshire, on March 26, 1921, a son of Clarence F. and Eva (Morse) Hill. He worked as a mechanic for many years for Bob Kerr Auto and JeanLessard Shell. He also worked as a custodian at North Country Union High School. He liked to hunt and fish and in general enjoyed the outdoors. He especially enjoyed gardening much to the delight of his family and friends. He loved having family members come to visit. He and his wife both enjoyed the many dogs that they have owned, and he especially liked Muffin. In 1941 he married Anita Collins, who survives him. He is also survived by his sons: Rodney Hill and Diane of Newport, Gilbert and Linda Hill of Lowell, and Richard and Claudette Hill of Newport Center; by his brother Dean Hill of Newport; by his sisters: Arlene Sherlaw of Newport Center, Dwnitta Bickford of Derby, and June Stewart of Barre; by six grandchildren; by 14 great-grandchildren; by one great-great-grandchild; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one brother, Oliver; and by five sisters. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. , 101, of Derby died in Derby on Friday, March 31, 2006. Mrs. Ellam was born in Beebe, Quebec, on January 13, 1905, a daughter of John and Mary (Major) Ashman. She was a former member of the Rebekahs in Derby. She adored horses and enjoyed doing handcrafts, crocheting, baking cakes for all her grandchildren, and taking van rides at Derby Green to the ice cream parlor. On August 6, 1924, she married Richard Ellam, who predeceased her on June 29, 1987. She is survived by her siblings: Elsie Townsend of Montreal, Quebec, Vernice Middleton of British Columbia, and Guy Ashman of Beebe; by six grandchildren: Veda Gonya and her husband, Dennis, of Charleston, Roy Ellam and his wife, Betty, of Derby, Marsha Archer and her husband, Bill, of Derby, Craig Ellam and his wife, Joanne, of Derby Line, Gregory Ellam and his fiancée, Debra, of Morgan, and Sara Gregory and her husband John of Newark, by 11 great-grandchildren; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son Irwine in June 1994; by her siblings: John Jr., Harry, Edward, Viola, Inez, Ralph, Vivian, Henry, and Alice; by her grandchildren: Richard, Roger, Bradley, and Ross; and by her great-granddaughter Jennifer. Funeral services were held April 3 at a Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. Ezra Duncan Chaffee

, 97, a longtime resident of Albany, died Sunday, April 2, 2006, at Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton, following a short illness. Mr. Chaffee was born in Albany on November 21, 1908, the youngest of four sons, to the late Carl and Kate (Griggs) Chaffee. He attended schools in Albany and graduated from Craftsbury Academy in 1926. In 1930, after working on his father's farm for four years, he was employed by the Middlesex Amusement Company in Massachusetts, operating theater equipment in the greater Boston area. In 1941 he accepted a job with the federal civil service at the U.S. Marine Hospital in Boston. In March 1942 he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps and did his basic and technical training at Feesler Field Air Force Base in Mississippi. He also received training in Bell Aircraft School in Niagara Falls, New York, and was then sent to the Wellston Air Depot in Warner Robbins, Georgia, where he served the remainder of the war as a mechanic and crew chief. He attained the rank of staff sargeant and received an honorable discharge in October 1945. He returned to the Boston area where he returned to the Marine Hospital, which had been renamed the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital. During his career, he worked in the dietary, medical records, and pharmaceutical departments until he was forced to retire in 1968 due to failing eyesight. He returned to the homestead in Albany and was employed for two years as a teacher's aide at the Albany Village School. He again retired, sold the family farm, purchased a mobile home, and moved to Windy Lane in Albany Village. He was a member of the Albany Methodist Church and Maple Valley Grange No. 450 of Albany. During the time with the Grange he served for nine years on the executive committee and was the lecturer for eight years. His programs became well known throughout the state, and in 1977 he was honored at the annual Vermont State Grange meeting as Vermont Lecturer of the Year. A longtime member of American Legion Post No. 23 in Orleans, he served many years in the town of Albany as the director of the Memorial Day program and placed the memorial flags on veterans' graves. He was predeceased by his parents; by his three brothers: Samuel, Harold, and Glenn Chaffee; and by nieces, nephews, and cousins. Among his surviving great-nieces and -nephews, he leaves Barbara Babineau of St. Antoine, New Brunswick, and B.J. Nash of Corapeake, North Carolina. A funeral service will be held at the Albany Methodist Church on Friday, April 7, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Nathan Strong officiating. Burial will be at a later date in the Albany Village Cemetery. , 99, of Derby died in Derby on Wednesday, March 29, 2006. Mrs. Broome was born on February 22, 1907, in Randolph, a daughter of Israel and Leah (Tatro) Perrier. She worked as a chambermaid for Kelly's Cabins and also as a nurse's aide for the Wassias State Hospital in New York. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary Newport Post No. 798. She always put her family first during her life, but among her hobbies, she really enjoyed playing bingo. She married Thomas Broome Sr. on April 18, 1923. He predeceased her on August 5, 1960. She is survived by her children: Charlotte Knowles of Belleview, Florida, Barbara Parenteau of Brownington, Joanne Bowen of Newport, and Darlyne Ann Carroll of Newport; by 31 grandchildren; by 43 great-grandchildren; by 23 great-great-grandchildren; by daughter-in-law Evelyn "Sissie" Broome; and by nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her children: Emile Broome, Beatrice Phaneuf, Thomas Broome Jr., Grace Gaylor, Roberta Church, Carroll Broome, and Colleen Comeau; by her brothers: Emile Perrier, Roland Perrier, and Irvin Tatro; by her sister Doris Perrier; and by her grandson Terry Dean Bushaw. , 88, of Newport died in Newport on Sunday, March 26, 2006. Mrs. Baraw was born in Morgan on August 30, 1917, a daughter of George and Ellen (Labounty) McKinney. In 1969 she successfully completed a nurse's aide course. She utilized those skills working at Bel-Aire Quality Care Nursing Center. In addition, her career included farming and sewing at Bogner's for seven years. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, and driving cross-country to Indiana. On September 7, 1935, she married Joshua Baraw, who predeceased her in 1989. She is survived by her children: Burton Baraw and his wife, Dickie, of Newport Center, Irene Farrar and her husband, Arthur, of Derby, Ruth Santaw and her husband, Dale, of Derby, and David Baraw and his wife, Joyce, of Newport Center; by her sisters Doris Snider of Derby and Vanessa Knott of Lancaster, New Hampshire; by 16 grandchildren; by several stepgrandchildren; by several great-grandchildren; and by several great-great-grandchildren and step great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother Edwin McKinney; and by her sisters: Marion Wheeler, Gladys LaPlante, Ruby Staton, and Geneva Ovitt. , 84, a resident of Copley Manor, died Sunday evening, April 2, 2006, at Copley Hospital in Morrisville. Mrs. Rockwell was born in Hollis, New Hampshire, on December 14, 1921, a daughter of Frederick and Clarabelle (Johnson) Lawrence. She attended school in Hollis. She married Ralph N. Rockwell Sr., who was a decorated veteran of World War I. He left Mrs. Rockwell a widow on June 21, 1967. She and her husband farmed on the Wild Branch Road in Craftsbury for several years. A hard worker, she worked at several places, including volunteering before retiring. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She lived in Lamoille County for many years, and due to failing health went to live at Copley Manor. She was a spiritual woman who loved her entire family and friends, who became family through the years. She enjoyed crocheting, making crafts, and doing fun projects with the grandchildren. She especially loved her owl collection. We all should "give a hoot." Watching the blue jays and squirrels always made her smile, and she found everlasting peace in prayer. She is survived by a sister, Grace Watkins, and her family of Merrimack, New Hampshire; by her children: Norman Rockwell of Phoenix, Arizona, Bertha Kennison of Scottsdale, Arizona, Ralph Jr. and Carol Rockwell of Wolcott, and Louiza Rockwell of Metcalf Pond; by grandchildren: Bonnie Stevens, Jay Bird, Tod Anthony, Christine Welch, Ralph Rockwell III, Michelle Rockwell-Payette-Boulanger, and Brian Marshia Jr.; and by their families, including 16 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband; by two sisters, Doris Ouellette and Virginia Lawrence; and by a brother, Dudley Lawrence. , 49, of Newport died at her home, surrounded by her loving family, on Monday, April 3, 2006. Mrs. Paradis was born in Hartford, Connecticut, on January 19, 1957, a daughter of Rene Sr. and June (Hart) Wells. She received her associate's degree in office management from the Community College of Vermont. She worked for many years for Northeast Kingdom Mental Health. For the past 17 years she was an emergency medical technician and division manager for the Newport Ambulance. Recently she was named Emergency Medical Services Leader of the Year. She was the training coordinator and billing manager for the Newport Ambulance and a Vermont certified instructor coordinator. She was an assistant medical examiner. She was a member of the National Organization of Emergency Medical Services and an American Heart Association cardiopulmonary resuscitation instructor. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and traveling to the Caribbean. She also enjoyed collecting unicorns, hiking, canoeing, and snowshoeing. On September 28, 1996, she married Michael Paradis, who survives her. , 90, of East Charleston died April 7, 2006, at his home in East Charleston, surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Moulton was born July 14, 1915, in East Charleston, a son of William and Cora (Batchelder) Moulton. On November 11, 1942, he married Geraldine Charland, who survives him. He owned and operated a dairy farm in East Charleston for many years. He was a lifetime and charter member of the Charleston Fire Department. He loved to hunt wildlife, and he enjoyed working in the woods with his horses, logging around the East Charleston area. She worked at Rockingham in Bellows Falls as a licensed practical nurse for 20 years. She moved to this area ten years ago to be near her family. She loved gardening and her cat and dog. On July 22, 1932, she married Merle Jackson Sr., who predeceased her in 1987. She is survived by her daughter Marylou Blais and her husband, Romeo, of Newport; by her grandchildren: Thomas Blais and his wife, Cindy, of Canton, Connecticut, Michael Blais and his wife, Janet, of Newport, Nicole Gaboriault and her husband, Norman, of Derby, and Monique Blais of Newport; and by her great-grandchildren: Lindsey Gaboriault, Patrick Gaboriault, Jeffrey Blais, and Sophia Blais. , 27, of Malone, New York, died March 20, 2006, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Watertown, New York. Mr. Guerin was born June 15, 1978, in Malone, a son of Jon E. Guerin and Elizabeth Martin Guerin of Chateaugay, New York. In 1996, he graduated from Franklin Academy in Malone. He received a certificate of graduation in building and trades from North Franklin Education Center. While in high school, he played soccer and ran indoor and outdoor track for four years. In his senior year, he participated in the New York State Track and Field Competition in the 400-meter hurdle event. He was supported and encouraged through his high school career by his guidance counselor, Jane Divendorf. In 1998, he graduated from the State University of New York at Delhi and was hired as a journeyman mason with Bricklayers and Craftworkers Local 2. Besides many union projects, he worked with contractors in Malone, Lake Placid, and other areas of New York. He built many beautiful stone walls and fireplaces in Delhi and Lake Placid. At the time of his death he was working as a mason on a project at Fort Drum, New York. He is survived by his mother and father of Chateaugay; by a brother, Nathan, of Hoboken, New Jersey; by half-brother and -sister Brett and Brittney Guerin of Keene, New York; by his girlfriend, Anne Bartholomew, of Norwood, New York; by aunts and uncles, including Carl and Susan Taylor of Derby; and by several cousins. Too numerous to mention individually are the friends he accumulated wherever he went. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Dr. Sidney Martin and Mary McDonough Martin; by his paternal grandparents, Oscar and Marie Bouvier Guerin; and by his aunt Jan Guerin Fleury. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 25 in St. Patrick's Church in Chateaugay. He had a generous soul and a giving heart. , 80, of Derby died in Burlington on Monday, April 10, 2006. Mr. Baird was born May 11, 1925, in Montpelier, a son of Alton and Bertha (Loveland) Baird. He grew up in Montpelier and was a graduate of Montpelier High School. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War. He worked as an executive secretary for British Airways for 27 years and retired to Newport in 1983. He is survived by his sister-in-law Peggy Baird of Berlin; by his best friend, Michael Cargill, of Lyndon Center; and by nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings: Lennabell Dudley, Kenneth R. Baird, Earl F. Baird, Evelyn M. Lamb, and Howard Baird. , 72, of Craftsbury died on March 5, 2006, in Burlington after a three-year battle with cancer. Mrs. Russell was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, on September 5, 1933, to Alma and Scott Paradise and grew up in Andover, Massachussetts. She attended Abbott Academy, now part of Phillips Andover Academy, where her father taught English. She received her bachelor of arts in history from Mt. Holyoke College in 1955 and then trained and worked as a visiting nurse in Hartford, Connecticut, from 1955 to 1958. In September 1958 she married Samuel Russell, whom she met while skiing in New Hampshire. Together, they moved to his hometown of Wayland, Massachusetts, where they raised three children. Starting in the mid-1960s, she devoted much of her energies to preserving and improving public transportation in and around Boston. She worked with the League of Women Voters, the Boston Area Commuter Rail Association, and from 1974 to 1977, the Southwest Corridor Coalition, where she served as community liaison. A proposed extension of Interstate 95 into Boston proper that threatened a number of the city's southwestern neighborhoods was abandoned largely due to the efforts of the organizations through which she worked. She later became the assistant director of commuter rail operations at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, becoming one of the first women to hold an administrative position there. In 1989 she and her husband moved to Craftsbury. There they built their own house and became involved with Sterling College. She ultimately became Sterling's director of admissions, a title she held until her retirement in 1996. She was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Hardwick, where she served as a vestry member and senior warden. She also pursued graduate studies in theology at the Hanover, New Hampshire, campus of the Bangor Theological Seminary and was one of the founding members of the Hardwick Peace Vigil, a group dedicated to stopping the conflict in Iraq. She is survived by her husband, Sam; by her sister Carol Decker of Santa Fe, New Mexico; by her brother Scott Paradise of Cambridge, Massachusetts; by her daughter Sarah; by sons Thaddeus and Jack; and by granddaughters Marguerite and Caledonia. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mrs. Russell's name to the Hardwick Area Food Pantry, the Craftsbury Public Library, or the Christian Peacemakers Team.
