, 43, of Derby, died in Burlington on Sunday, July 16, 2006. She was born in Concord, New Hampshire, on May 19, 1963, the daughter of Edmund Sr. and Nancy (Pickering) Davis. Ms. Davis was a member of the Nulhegan Band of the Coosuk-Abenaki people. She loved animals, especially her dog Chief, enjoyed watching NASCAR, fishing with her son, dancing and hunting. She lived for her kids and her family and just liked to have fun. Ms. Davis is survived by her children: Jeremy Lacasse Sr. and his wife, Evelina, of North Troy, Ashley Barrup and her companion, David Murray, of Brownington, and Robin Barrup Jr. of Derby; by her grandchildren, Katie Lacasse and Jeremy Lacasse Jr.; by her parents, Edmund Sr. and Nancy Davis of Derby; by her brothers: Edmund E. Davis Jr. and his wife, Lisa, of Brownington, Keith Davis and his companion, Hope Bent, of Lowell, Dwayne Davis and his companion, Bonnie Karpoff, of Newport, and Bradley Davis and his fiancée of Derby Line; by her paternal grandmother, Elsie M. Davis of Derby; by her maternal grandmother, Hilda Pickering of Epson, New Hampshire; and by many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. She was predeceased by her paternal grandfather, Rogers Davis; by her maternal grandfather, John Pickering Sr.; and by her uncles, John "Skip" Pickering Jr., and William "Pick" Pickering. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 20, at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel in Newport at 1 p.m. with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. Genevieve Prouty Gage

, 89, of Newport died peacefully on July 10, 2006, at her lovely home overlooking Lake Memphremagog, surrounded by friends and family. She was born on February 9, 1917, in West Derby, the daughter of Ward and Edith (Blair) Prouty. She attended schools in Newport and was a graduate of Bradford Academy and Garland School. On August 31, 1940, she married Edwin Gage, who predeceased her on March 13, 2000. She was a member of the Goodrich Memorial Library and served for several years as chairman. She was a member of the Woman's Club, the Hospital Auxiliary, and a longtime member of the Eastern Star. She was a dedicated member of the Newport Center Methodist Church. She had many hobbies, including collecting music boxes, paperweights, and the one thing she liked best was getting the birth dates and anniversary dates of her many friends and then sending cards to them on each occasion. She was an accomplished equestrian, had her own horse for many years, and served as Grand Marshall of many parades, including the Barton fair. Mrs. Gage is survived by one cousin, Perrie Lee Prouty Marstaller of Rockville, Maryland; by two nieces, Linda LaFlam of Sunrise, Florida, and Kathy Elkins of Durham, North Carolina; and by Lovey, her cat. She was predeceased by a half-brother, Charles Tyler Prouty. While the Gages had no children of their own, they were known in this community for their many friends who they graciously treated as their "sons and daughters." The Gages were well known for their wonderful "happy hours" which they enjoyed with their friends and family, a tradition carried on by Mrs. Gage after Mr. Gage's death. Mrs. Gage was known for her grand Christmas parties at the Eastside Restaurant, where she entertained her family and friends with grace and elegance seldom, if ever, duplicated in this community. She and Mr. Gage were benefactors of United Christian Academy, the former Newport City School on School Street, where they first met. The auditorium is now named after Genevieve and Eddie Gage. Mrs. Gage has also been a major benefactor of the Holland Dialysis Center at North Country Hospital, Goodrich Memorial Library and the Welcome Center. The funeral was held at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford funeral home on July 12 with the Reverend Paul Essaff officiating, and the Reverend John and Ruth Genco providing special music. A graveside service was held after the funeral service at Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport. The family and close friends of Mrs. Gage take this opportunity to publicly express their heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to her caregivers, who not only gave her the best care and support imaginable, but gave her back the love which she had for them. John A. "Bud" Moore

, 74, died on July 13, 2006, at North Country Hospital with his wife and daughter at his side. He was born in Newport on November 29, 1921, and lived in the area for most of his life. He worked with his father as a cabinet maker and during World War II he completed 400 hours at the Murkland Machine Shop which equipped him to work in the aircraft industry during the second World War, both in Windsor, Vermont, and Hartford, Connecticut. Mr. Moore spent 37 and a half years working for Ethan Allen where he retired as a supervisor in April 1985. He was a justice of the peace for the town of Barton, a member of the planning commission, and he recently received a commendation from the Governor's office for his many years of service. Mr. Moore also served on the board of directors of the Memphremagog Historical Society and was able to contribute many interesting historic facts about Newport. He was a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed gospel music and concerts at various churches in the area as well as in Florida. He was known for his creativity, workmanship and his love of friends and family. Mr. Moore is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lois M. Moore; by his daughters, Carol Moore-Whitney and her husband, Peter Whitney, of East Burke and Betty Moore and her friend Ed Nollmann of Hudson, Florida; and by granddaughters Maya and Joleil Whitney. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews as well as brothers-in-law Alton Magoon and Kenneth Magoon. Contributions may be made in memory of John Moore to Frontier Animal Society. The funeral was scheduled for Tuesday, July 18, at the Church of God in Newport. Interment will be on Saturday, July 22, at Lake Road Cemetery.

, 44, of Orleans, beloved husband of Ellen Mandigo, died at home on July 12, 2006. Mr. Mandigo was born on Ocotber 21, 1961, in Gouveneur, New York, the son of Gordon and Mary Popple Mandigo. On February 3, 1990, he married Ellen Disotell who survives him. He was an auto mechanic by trade. He enjoyed fishing, was an avid sports fan, especially liked to watch car racing, liked playing his guitar and enjoyed all types of music. He also was very fond of his cat, Jinx. Mr. Mandigo is survived by his wife, Ellen Mandigo of Orleans; by his father, Gordon Mandigo; by his children: Michael and his companion, Sarah, of Newport, Amanda and James, both of Orleans; by his granddaughters, Savannah and Emma Mandigo; by a brother, Emmett, of New York, by sisters Debra Mattot and her husband, Jeff, of New York, and Katherine Yeager and her husband, Bill, of Missouri; and by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother and his brother Dale. A celebration of his life was scheduled for July 18 at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Barton. Interment will be held on Wednesday, July 19, at Pleasant View Cemetery in Clair, New York. , 87, of Newport Center died peacefully July 15, 2006, at the home of his companion, Janet Gustin, in Newport Center. He was born on May 24, 1919, in Coventry, a son of Chester and Vera (Fairbrother) Barlow. He served in the United States Army during World War II. After he was discharged, he started a milk transport business and later was called the Barlow and Gustin Transport Company. He enjoyed his family and his work very much. He is survived by his children, Melvin Barlow and his wife, Lorraine, of East Hampton, Connecticut, Cynthia Barlow of Newport Center; by his grandchildren, Lisa Soraci and her husband, Mark, of Sturbridge, Massachusetts and Stephen Barlow and his wife, Jennifer, of New York; by five great-grandchildren; Abigail and Evan Soraci, and Jarred, Oliva, and Mason Barlow; and by his companion, Janet Gustin of Newport Center, and family. He was predeceased by a brother, Gordon Barlow. James Truman Pattee

, 87, of Newport, died in Newport on Friday, July 14, 2006. He was born in Georgia, Vermont, on March 24, 1919, the son of Fred and Ella (Cleveland) Pattee. Mr. Pattee graduated from Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, was a veteran of World War II, and received the Soldier's Medal for Valor. He worked as a foreman at American Maple Products for 46 years and was treasurer of the United Church of Newport. He was a stamp collector for many years, and he and his wife enjoyed traveling to visit family as well as attending their children's and grandchildren's many activities. On October 12, 1945, Mr. Pattee married the former Irene Sunderland, who predeceased him in August 2001. He is survived by his children: Martha Heath of Westford, Roger Pattee and his wife, Barbara, of Livonia, Michigan, Allen Pattee and his wife, Teri, of Bedford, New Hampshire, and Becky Bucyznski of Woodbridge, Virginia; by his grandchildren: Molly, Kate and her husband, Eric, Elisse Adrian and his wife, Mandi Keys, Bethany, Daniel, and Sarah; by his great-grandchildren: Juliana, Alexa, and Adrian II; by his sister, Edith Pattee of St. Albans; and by a host of other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his siblings Bertha Pattee, George Pattee, and Carolyn Pattee. , 76, of Lowell, died on Monday, July 10, 2006, in White River Junction. He was born in Troy on June 18, 1930, the son of Carroll and Helen (Buck) Willis. Mr. Willis served in the U.S. Navy. He starting working as a heavy equipment operator in 1969 for the Vermont Asbestos Group in Eden, retiring in 1996. He loved working in the woods, family gatherings and grocery shopping. On April 10, 1950, Mr. Willis married the former Mary Jane Boucher, who survives him. He is also survived by his children: Clifton Willis Jr. and his wife, Lorelei, of Troy, Rosemarie Shedd and her husband, Dean, of Hyde Park, Pamela Lontine and her husband, Paul, of Lowell, Gail Gerard of Lowell, and Melissa Pion and her husband, Norman, of Lowell; by his sister Dorothy Taylor of Troy; by his sister-in-law Lois Willis of Newport Center; and by 12 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. , 83, died peacefully at the home of her daughter on July 19, 2006. Mrs. Adams was born May 28, 1923, to Neil H. Ellsworth and Beatrice (Gale) Ellsworth. She lived in Stowe and graduated from Stowe High School in 1941. She married George F. "Ted" Adams Jr. on August 11, 1941. He predeceased her in 1985. She loved the outdoors and enjoyed swimming, canoeing, fishing, hunting, and reading. She and her husband enjoyed many summers at their camp on Lake Parker in West Glover and shared their home with many wonderful dogs and cats. She is survived by her sister Kathleen Stoddard of Lancaster, California; by her daughter Susan Adams of Johnson; by her son Michael Adams of Morgan; by her grandchildren: Paige Howard of Leeds, Massachusetts, Jill Manca of Amherst, New Hampshire, Stacey Schaaf of Hyde Park, Christopher Hale of Bristol, Eric Hale of Jeffersonville, and Jennifer Hale of Jeffersonville; and by nine great-grandchildren. A private burial on July 30 will be followed by an open house at Susan Adams' and Larry Peck's home in Johnson from 2 to 6 p.m. Friends and family are welcome. , 88, of Springfield, Missouri, died July 3, 2006, in St. John's Hospital. Mr. Anderson was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Annette. He was a native of Vermont but spent most of his life in Massachusetts. He retired from a paper mill and resumed his bus driving career until the age of 70. He and his wife moved to Florida for 12 lovely years, making friends they cherished. They moved to Missouri six years ago to be near their daughters. His sense of humor and enjoyment of people were traits that his family will miss. He is survived by three daughters: Patricia Lavoie and Jean Krehmeier, both of Springfield and Susan Beck of Kimberling City, Missouri; by a son, Dwight Anderson Jr., of Ashburnham, Massachusetts; by a brother, Lester Anderson, of Hyde Park; and by numerous nephews, nieces, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Cremation is under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Vermont.

On March 15, 1991, he married Claudia Groom, who survives him. He was a letter carrier for the United States Postal Service, retiring in 1992. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and carpentry work, and he loved spending time and taking rides with his dog Buddy. He was a member of the Valley Lodge No. 106 of Free and Accepted Masons, the Shrine, and Orleans American Legion Post No. 23. , 89, formerly of Hartford, Connecticut, Lake Willoughby, and Lyndonville, died Saturday, July 15, 2006, at his home. Mr. Hammond was a son of the late John and Margaret (Gardner) Hammond. He was born in Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, on September 17, 1916. He was a tool, die, and gauge maker for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft, retiring after 34 years of service. He married Mildred J. LeVasseur on February 3, 1940, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Hartford. He was an active member of the Catholic church, a scoutmaster in Avon, Connecticut, for 15 years, an avid carpenter and fisherman. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mildred, of Lyndonville; by three sons: Leighton Hammond and his wife, Linda, of Windsor, Connecticut, Bruce Hammond of Columbia, Connecticut, and John W. Hammond and his wife, Shannon, of Campbell River, British Columbia; by a brother, Bruce Walters, of Ohio; and by four grandchildren. Services will be at the convenience of the family.

, 83, of Newport died in Newport on Friday, July 21, 2006. Mrs. Maker was born in Newport January 7, 1923, a daughter of Charles and Lottie (Thomas) Young. She worked as a nurse's aide at Bel-Aire Quality Care Nursing Center. She was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, painting, doing puzzles, and growing flowers and plants. On August 14, 1964, she married Clarence E. Maker, who survives her. She is also survived by a daughter, Susan Powell, and her husband, Tim, of Barton; by a granddaughter, Kayla Bernier, of Barton; by her brother Leslie Kennison of Newport; by her sister Opel Judd of Rutland; by her sister-in-law Claire Young of Newport; by a foster son, Dennis Fields, of New Hampshire; by a foster daughter, Albena Flanders; and by nieces and nephews. He graduated from Lake Region Union High School in 1990, and in 1994 he graduated summa cum laude from Southern Vermont College. He was a driver for the Vermont Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired and was an advocate for disabled people in Montpelier. He enjoyed reading, four-wheeling, and snowmobiling. He was a member of Masonic Valley Lodge No. 106 and a former member of Newport Elks Club. He is survived by his children Jonathan D. , 81, of Barre died Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin. Born September 9, 1924, in Norfolk, Virginia, Mrs. Shattuck was a daughter of Joseph and Ruth (Wilson) Skrabut. She graduated from Meshoppen High School in Pennsylvania in 1942. On May 30, 1943, she married Robert E. Shattuck in East Harford, Connecticut. They made their home in East Hartford and Derby before moving to Barre in 1962. He died November 27, 2005. In earlier years, she had worked at United Aircraft Pratt and Whitney in East Hartford. After moving to Vermont, she worked for the Vermont Transportation Agency as a supervisor with the Motor Vehicle Department and later the Aeronautics Department until her retirement. As a child she sang in her church's choir and later played the organ. In Barre she was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. Her past memberships included the Canadian Club Auxiliary of Barre, the Vermont State Employee Association where she served as a past president, and the Sno-Bees Snowmobile Club. She enjoyed traveling and time spent at camp near the ocean. She loved spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include four daughters: Sheila Clark of Glover, Bobbi Nichols of Lake Winola, Pennsylvania, Denise Record of Troy, New Hampshire, and Earline Shattuck of Barre; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Josey Brace of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Virginia Wood of Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania; two brothers, Hank Skrabut of Tolland, Connecticut, and Thomas Skrabut of Tunkhannock; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by her sister Ruth Doner. A private service will be held at the convenience of her family. She was a graduate of Concord High School and the University of Vermont, where she was a member of the Sigma Gamma sorority. In 1947 she married Kermit B. Stearns of Orleans, who predeceased her in 1956. She taught school for many years in Plainfield, Gilman (where she was also principal), Orleans, and Barton and at Edmunds Junior High School and Burlington High School. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Burlington, the National Education Association, the Vermont Education Association, the Chittenden County Retired Teachers Association (of which she was a past president), the Athena Club of Burlington, and the Order of the Eastern Star, where she was also past matron. She is survived by her son Thomas of Burlington; by her daughter Diane Jones and her husband, Douglas, of Warrenton, Virginia; and by several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by three brothers: Philip, Roger and Sidney Osgood; and by a sister, Eleana Merrill. A graveside service will be held at a later date in Orleans.

, 75, a resident of Framingham, Massachusetts, for 50 years, died Sunday, July 23, 2006, at her home. Mrs. Ward was the wife of 52 years of Richard Wallace Ward Sr. of Framingham. Born July 14, 1931, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, she was a daughter of the late Ernest and Hope (Arnold) Bullock of Lincoln, Rhode Island. After graduating from Central Falls High School in Rhode Island in 1948 she continued her education in The Wilson School of Prepared Science in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was a graduate of the class of 1949. She became a lab technician at the Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick, Massachusetts, and the Alexandria Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia. In 1968 she joined the Framingham School Police Department and became the president of the Framingham Police Association. She remained there until her retirement 33 years later in 2000. She was of valuable and vital importance to the community and wanted to help those around her and make a better place for future generations in the town. She was a member of the Jaycettes, Framingham Conservation Commission, the Conservation Council, the School Bus Transportation Committee, and Town Meeting during her 50 years serving the town of Framingham. She also worked for the Brophy School cafeteria and was a member of the Plymouth Church in Framingham. An avid lover of bingo and summers spent in Newport, she was able to pursue both of these pastimes after her retirement, when she made many lifelong friends. Besides her husband, Richard, she is survived by her children Richard Wallace Ward Jr. and his wife, Deborah, of Hadley, Massachusetts, and Kimberlee Anne Ryan and her husband, Mark, of Norton, Massachusetts; by five grandchildren: Hannah, Emily and Rachel Ward of Hadley and Evan and Aidan Ryan of Norton; by her sister Norma Higginbottom and her husband, Gary, of Lincoln; and by many relatives and friends. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service on Friday, July 28, at 10 a.m. at the Norton Funeral Home in Framingham with the Reverend Ernest Batten presiding. Burial will follow in Edgell Grove Cemetery in Framingham. , 25, of Derby died at her home on Wednesday, July 19, 2006, surrounded by her family, following a long courageous battle with cancer. Ms. Watson was born in Newport on November 3, 1980. She was a 1998 graduate of North Country Union High School. She enjoyed gardening and socializing with her many friends and family. Ms. Watson is survived by her father, Wallace Watson, and his wife, Vicki, of Newport; by her mother, Susan Humes, of North Troy; by her grandparents: Raymond and Florean Markwell of Derby and Joan Watson of Island Pond; by her sister Gloria Provencher and her husband, Jon, of North Troy; by her stepsisters Ashley and Brittany Corkins of Newport; by her stepbrother Gregory Lucas of Newport; and by her nephew Bryer Provencher of North Troy. She was predeceased by her grandfather Edward Watson. Funeral services were held July 25 with Muriel O'Gorman and Jennifer Conley officiating. Interment followed at Lakeside Cemetery in Island Pond. , 99, died peacefully on July 16, 2006, in Barton after a long illness. Mrs. Wright was born in Irasburg on July 30, 1907, a daughter of Elmer A. and Blanche (Keith) Slack. She attended Lyndon Institute and went to Columbia University and earned her bachelor of science degree in 1940 and master of arts degree in 1943. She taught in elementary schools in New York and Vermont. She married Ross T. Wright, who predeceased her on April 16, 1979. She is survived by nephews Dr. Thomas Slack and his wife, Robin, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Michael Slack and his wife, Nicole, of Colchester; and by her stepson Carl Wright and his wife, Dorcas, of Brookfield. She was predeceased by her brother Dr. Howard Slack of South Burlington on March 21, 2002. A memorial service was held July 24 at the West Glover Congregational Church.
