, 79, of Williston, formerly of Newport, died peacefully January 28, 2006, in Williston. Mr. Carpenter was born December 23, 1926, in Derby, a son of Chester and Beryl (Temple) Carpenter. On June 18, 1951, he married Joyce Holmes, who survives him. He entered the U.S. Army and served his country in the Philippines during World War II. He was a lifetime member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and a past member of the National Rifle Association. He was the orginal founder of the Orleans County .38s, a law enforcement shooting club. He was a past member of the Orleans County Sheriff's Department and the Newport City Police Department. He was a Canadian Pacific Railroad investigator for approximately 40 years until his retirement in 1991. He and his wife enjoyed camping and attending many antique steam engine shows throughout the eastern United States with a couple of side trips out west. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Carpenter, of Williston; by a son, R. Paul Carpenter Jr., and his wife, Pat, of South Burlington; by five grandchildren: Debra Carpenter of Dover, New Hampshire, Elaine and Martha Carpenter of South Burlington, and Angela and Nicholas DeLauri of Rutland; by a brother, Ted Carpenter, of Newport; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Cynthia, in 1988; and by seven brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, February 1, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Darling Hill Road in Newport with the Reverend Joy Toll-Chandler officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 12:30 p.m. until the hour of the service on Wednesday. Spring interment will be in Derby Center Cemetery. Perley Henry Allen Jr.

, 75, of Williamstown, formerly of Greensboro Bend and Barre, died Monday, January 30, 2006, at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin. Mr. Allen was born November 14, 1930, in Greensboro, son of the late Perley Allen Sr. and Natalie (Buck) Allen. He attended Greensboro public schools. He married Ida Elida Ewen on September 5, 1950, in Lyndonville. She died July 5, 1982. He was first employed on the family farm in Greensboro Bend. For more than 25 years he drove truck for Cabot Creamery. He was later employed at Bond Auto in Barre as a truck driver and for more than ten years at Formula Ford in South Barre. He enjoyed going to the ocean in Maine, hunting, fishing, and camping. He enjoyed horses and the time that he spent with his grandchildren. Survivors include his stepmother, Carlene Allen, of Morrisville; his companion, Joyce Gonyaw, of Williamstown; three sons: Wyman "Butch" Allen and his wife, Bobbie, of Mineville, New York, Perley Allen III and his fiancée, Lottie LaRock, of Hardwick, and Stanley Allen and his wife, Debbie, of Greensboro Bend; three daughters: Paula Allen of Craftsbury, Madaline LaRose and her husband, Dale, of Wolcott, and Molly Dimick of Greensboro Bend; 39 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 4, at 1 p.m., at the Northern Vermont Funeral Home with the Reverend Ernest Machia of the Hope Community Church in Walden officiating. Spring burial will be in the family lot in the Sanborn Cemetery in East Hardwick. , 52, of Gilman died suddenly Saturday, January 21, 2006, in Gilman. Mr. Griffin was born on June 5, 1953, in Newport, a son of Marion (Labounty) and the late Lawrence Griffin. He was a member of Moose Lodge No. 1779 in St. Johnsbury. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a very proud loving father, grandfather, son, brother, and uncle. He would do anything for anyone. He is survived by his children Michael Griffin Jr. and his wife, Nicole, of Springfield and Kathy Metras and her husband, Jason, of Coventry; by his grandchildren: Jeremiah Liberty, Brady Metras, and Alanna Griffin; by his mother, Marion Griffin, of Barton; by his brothers: Francis of Springfield, David and his wife, Lisa, of Brattleboro, and Allen and his wife, Georgette; by a sister, Diane Bapp, and her husband, Charles, of Barton; by uncles: Cecil Griffin of Westboro, Massachusetts, Richard Labounty of Florida, and Raymond Labounty and his wife, Leah, of Danville; by aunts: Pauline Schaffer of Kentucky, Rachel Daigle and her husband, Ronald, of New York, and Beverly Labounty of Newport; and by several nieces, nephews, and friends. He was predeceased by aunts and uncles: Dale Griffin, Wayne Griffin, Kenneth Labounty, Dorothy Morgan, and Robert Labounty. Funeral services were held January 28 at a Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport. Spring interment will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery. Elliott T. Reynolds

, 62, of Island Pond died on January 29, 2006, at Bel-Aire Quality Care Nursing Center in Newport, after a long bout with cancer. Mr. Reynolds was born in Island Pond on July 19, 1943, a son of Frank and Denise Reynolds. He attended St. Mary's Academy. The paper mill in North Stratford, New Hampshire, employed him for a period of time. He worked for the Brighton Highway Department and later for the Vermont State Transportation Department in the maintenance division for 19 and a half years before retiring due to illness. His favorite pastimes were putting puzzles together and building wooden crafts such as birdhouses, feeders, moose planters, old-fashioned wagons, footstools, etc., sometime with the help of his sister Janice. He enjoyed having his friends and their children stop by for a visit or a swim in Island Pond, at a place known as Elliott's Beach to many. He was a member of the Island Pond Lake Association, the Island Pond Historical Society, and the Vermont State Retired Employees Association. He was a former member of Stony's North Country CB Club and had several annual meetings at his beach along with a cookout for the whole club. Every deer season people could hear him on the CB talking with various hunting camps giving deer reports. He loved to sandbag, listening to other's conversations, and was quick to correct them if they were wrong. He was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his brother Bradley and his wife, Gloria, of Derby; by his sister Janice and her husband, Joseph Fournier, of Island Pond; and by his nieces and nephews: Mary Beth (Reynolds) Belmore and her husband, Rick, of Island Pond, Kim Reynolds of Waterbury Center, Jackie (Reynolds) LaCasse and her husband, Bobby, of Hooksett, New Hampshire, Michael Reynolds and his wife, Germain, of Richmond Hill, Georgia, Terry Fournier and his wife, Mary, of Bradford, Todd Fournier of London, England, and his favorite niece, Kathy Fournier. A very special aunt, Pauline (Elliott) Guay, of Island Pond and Bradenton, Florida, also survives him. He was very close to his cousins Gorden and Becky Lefebvre, who were always there when needed. He also had some very special friends who were always there for him: Roy Frizzell and his wife, Nancy, Owen "Buster" Reilly and his wife, Carol, Alan Wing and his wife, Virginia, Jimmy Williams and his wife, Gail, Brian Lougee and his wife, June, and Gary Fellows and his wife, Terry. A Mass for Mr. Reynolds will be celebrated on Friday, February 3, at St. James Catholic Church in Island Pond at 11 a.m. Visiting hours are on Thursday, February 2, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Island Pond. , 56, of Irasburg died peacefully at his home February 4, 2006. Mr. Gile was born in Barton on April 26, 1949, to Ernest and Agnes (Peters) Gile. He spent two years fighting for his country in Vietnam. He farmed all of his life in Barton and Irasburg. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, being in the outdoors, building projects, playing horseshoes, and spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Geneva (Putvain)Gile; by his three children and their loving spouses: Dale and PhunGile of Irasburg, Craig Gile of Marshfield, and Karen and Kris Leach of Irasburg; by five grandsons: Dillon, Garrett, and Wyatt Gile and Braydon and Landyn Leach; by one sister, Jeanette Douglas, and her husband, Kenny, of Florida; and by many nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. An outdoor service celebrating Mr. Gile's life will be held Monday, February 13, at 1 p.m. outside the home he built and loved. The pastor of the Lake Region Parish will officiate. Those who desire to make a donation in Mr. Gile's memory should do a good deed for someone in need.

, 90, of North Troy died in Newport on Wednesday, February 1, 2006. Mrs. Rondeau was born in Montréal, Québec, on June 19, 1915, a daughter of Albert and Marie (Brodeur)Lanctot. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Church and the Ladies of St. Anne in North Troy. On October 9, 1961, she married Gerard Rondeau, who survives her. She is also survived by her brother Gille Lanctot of Granby, Québec; by her sisters: Reine-Jeanne Paquin of Farnham, Québec, Rose Ange Perrault of Newport Center, Carmen Sharman of North Carolina, Marie Lys of Boucherville, Québec, and Gabrielle Guerin of Québec; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers George Lanctot and Raymond Lanctot; and by her sisters Genevieve Touchette and Flore Beaulieu. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated February 4 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with the Reverend Jerome Mercure officiating. Spring interment will take place at the Notre Dame Cemetery in North Troy. Should friends desire, contributions in Mrs. Rondeau's memory may be made to the Ladies of St. Anne.

, 82, of Coventry died in Newport on Saturday, January 28, 2006. Mrs. Young was born in Morristown Corners on July 21, 1923, a daughter of Carroll and Flora (Hadlock) Green. She loved her former job at Phelps Pharmacy. She also worked as a sales clerk at Woolworth's and Needleman's. She worked in the hot lunch program and as custodian at the Coventry Village School and was librarian at the Coventry library. She was treasurer and caretaker of the Coventry Cemetery and worked at the Congregational church, where she also sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She was a life member and past grand matron of the state of the Order of the Eastern Star Newport Lakeside Chapter. She enjoyed gardening, plants, cooking and traveling. On August 29, 1941, she married Earl James Young, who predeceased her on September 10, 1984. She is survived by her daughter Carol Craft of Coventry; by her granddaughter Jennifer Lynn Craft of Derry, New Hampshire; and by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her daughter Linda Vining in 2001; and by her brother Robert Green. Funeral services were held February 4 at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel in Newport with the Reverend Anne Squires officiating. Spring interment will take place at the Coventry Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Chestina "Tina" (Graveline) Hummers

, 94, died quietly the evening of February 2, 2006, in Newport. Mrs. Hummers was born ChestinaLamere on November 6, 1911. As a teenager she astonished everyone with her ski-jumping skills and won many prizes for this talent in competitive events throughout northern Vermont. Her two children still recall with fascination the sight in 1937 of her original ski jump adjoining Glen Road. As youngsters, they refused to believe their mother once sailed aloft from that impressive platform. After marriage she was a farmer's wife in Coventry until World War II, when she went to Connecticut to work in the cotton mills in Willimantic and as a sales clerk at I.J. Fox Clothing in Hartford, while her husband, Edgar, worked at Colt firearms. On the return to Vermont after the war, she finally became a full-time housewife and mother and an enthusiastic participant in community affairs with her many crafts and women's club activities. She had special skills in needle work of all kinds, even tatting,a skill all but gone in today's world. In later years she and her husband spent many Vermont winters in Florida and Arizona, always returning to their Vermont home. She was a good friend and mother and will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. She held membership with St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella. She is survived by her two sons, Duane Edgar Graveline and his wife, Suzanne, of Merritt Island, Florida, and Norman Edward Graveline and his wife, Simone, of Derby; by three grandsons: James, David, and Duane Graveline; by two great-grandchildren, Jamie and Jennifer; by a sister-in-law, Dorothy Lamere, of Derby; and by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by two husbands, Edgar Graveline and Fred Hummers; and by four siblings: Frank, Edna, Erbert, and Walter, all of the Newport area. Funeral services were held February 6 at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newport with the Reverend Yvon Royer celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial.
