Ann Rebmann Daudon

, 80, civic activist, conservationist, devoted wife, and inspiring, loving mother, died Monday, July 17, 2006, from advanced Alzheimer's disease. Mrs. Daudon was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, M. Daniel Daudon, in April. She was born in Philadelphia in 1926, a daughter of Mary B. and G. Ruhland Rebmann. She attended Shipley School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and Wells College in Aurora, New York, graduating in 1948. She subsequently received a master of science degree in education from the University of Pennsylvania and taught elementary school. In 1954 she and her husband moved to Wilmington, Delaware, where they raised their three children. In 1999 they retired to Kendal in Hanover, New Hampshire. Mrs. Daudon was also a regular summer visitor to Greensboro, where the Daudon family has a cottage on Caspian Lake. Ann Daudon lived life with great conviction, the utmost regard for the truth, deep caring for others, and an enduring commitment to make life better for those in need. She brought to all her affairs a gentle graciousness and a brilliant sense of humor. She was a founding board member of the Delaware Nature Society and helped create the Nature Education Center at Brandywine Creek State Park. She served on the board of the Wilmington Zoo. In 1968 she helped establish the West Center City Day Care Center, which provides early childhood care for inner city children. She served on the board and, for over 30 years, as a volunteer teacher. An accomplished gardener, Mrs. Daudon was a member of the Garden Club of Wilmington and the Garden Club of America (GCA) where she served as zone chairman and chairman of the Conservation Committee. In this latter capacity, she organized club members to lobby for the Alaska Lands Conservation Act of 1980, protecting the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge and other wilderness areas. These efforts helped convince Delaware's senior republican senator to provide one of the crucial votes leading to its passage. With another GCA member, she developed a program combining humor with science to teach gardeners how to identify plants using taxonomy keys. This program proved highly popular, with presentations delivered at 82 garden clubs from Connecticut to Texas over ten years. An avid reader, Mrs. Daudon enjoyed music, birding, dancing, needlepoint, and anything to do with the outdoors and her grandchildren. She was active at Christ Church and at Trinity Church in Wilmington. Perhaps most importantly, she knew how to be a genuine, steadfast friend - to those young or old, from all walks of life, through thick and thin - it didn't matter. She is survived by her sister Beverly Bingham of Minneapolis, Minnesota; by three children and their spouses: Lynn DaudonJenness of Newport, Marc Daudon Jr. of Seattle, Washington, and Lisa Daudon of Starksboro; by seven grandchildren; and by two stepgrandchildren.
