, 78, of Barton died Friday, January 6, 2006, at Northeast Medical Center in Concord, North Carolina. Mrs. Stone was born December 20, 1927, in Orleans County, a daughter of the late Wesley LaMonda and Lois DawingLaMonda. She graduated from Barton Academy in 1946. She lived and worked in various places around Glover and Barton. She spent many years raising her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Hugh Stone Sr., of Barton; by sons: Harley Stone and his wife, Cathy, of Walden, Norman Stone Sr. and his wife, Cynthia, of Concord, North Carolina, and Dale Stone and his wife, Audrey, of Sutton; by daughters: Lois Menard of Glover, Peggy Bly and her husband, Tom, of Derby, Julie Willey of Glover, and Tammy Hodgdon of Barton; by daughters-in-law: Sandra Stone of Glover, Bonnie Stone of Irasburg, and Linda Whiteside and her husband, Jerry, of Mt. Pleasant, North Carolina; by brothers Harry LaMonda and his wife, Gretta, of East Hampton, New York, and Leonard LaMonda of Middlebury; by 13 grandchildren; and by 19 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by three sons: Hugh Stone Jr., James Stone, and a baby boy; by three brothers: Roy, Wayne, and Merton; and by two grandchildren, Matthew Menard and Amy Willey. A memorial service will be held in the spring in Glover.

, 92, died Wednesday, January 4, 2006, at the Morrisville Genesis Elder Care Center. Mrs. Barber was born August 9, 1913, in Cochrane, Ontario, a daughter of the late Lorenzo and Annie (Greig) Crewson. She attended schools in Brower and Frank Town, Ontario, and graduated from high school in Smith Falls, Ontario, in 1929. In 1958 she married Warren A. Barber in Hardwick. She attended Lyndon State College, and following graduation she was a French teacher in Island Pond and an elementary schoolteacher in South Peacham. She was also a schoolteacher in Israel, where she made her home for more than 23 years. She was a member of the Assembly of God, Community Bible Church, in South Burlington. Following her return from Israel in 2001, she attended the Redeemed Christian Fellowship in South Burlington. She enjoyed traveling and teaching school. Other enjoyments include teaching Sunday school for the Assembly of God churches in Hardwick, Barton, and Burlington. Survivors include a sister, Helen Robertson, of Ontario and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Warren, on February 29, 1968; by three brothers: Ernest, Judson, and William Crewson; and by two sisters, Hilda Kilburn and Sadie Crawson. Funeral services were held January 9 at the Northern Vermont Funeral Home in Hardwick with Pastor Ernest Chaves of the Touch of Grace Church in East Hardwick officiating. Spring burial will be in North Ridge Cemetery in Sutton. Kenneth Clifton Smith

, 84, of West Charleston, and Lodi, New York, died peacefully in the hospice unit of Lakeside Nursing Home in Ithaca, New York, on December 18, 2005. Mr. Smith was born in Barton on October 26, 1921, a son of Maurice D. Smith and Theda Dunham Smith. His family moved to West Charleston when he was 12 years old, and he finished his education there. In 1941 he entered World War II right after Pearl Harbor and served in the communications branch of the Coast Guard until July 1945. He served in north Africa and western Europe. After the war he joined New England Telephone and Telegraph and worked there for 38 years in the capacities of lineman, splicer, installer, foreman, and contract inspector. He retired in February 1982. A longtime resident of West Charleston, he had served as selectman. He also did some farming, raised honeybees, and built a new home in town. He was considered an authority in the state of Vermont on the subject of raising honeybees. He is survived by children Janice Church Terry of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Henry Church and his wife, Mary, of Ovid, New York; by his sister Joyce Smith Morton of Prairie City, Oregon; by his brother Rodney Drown and his wife, Patty, of Pittsford; by ten grandchildren; by 15 great-grandchildren; by 12 great-great grandchildren; by nieces and nephews; and by many wonderful friends in New York and Vermont. He was predeceased by his parents; by his stepmother, Gladys Smith; by his son Lloyd K. Smith; by his wife of over 50 years, Thelma Eley Smith; and by his son-in-law Marvin R. Terry. A memorial service will be held at the Free Will Baptist Church in West Charleston in the summer. , 76, of Jewett City, Connecticut, died early Tuesday morning, January 3, 2006, at Bacus Hospital in Norwich, Connecticut. Mr. Stratton was born October 11, 1929, in Newport, a son of the late Walter and Ethel Stratton. In 1988 he married Melba DeGraw, who survives him. As a young man living in Newport, he worked for the Curtis Funeral Home for Francis and Justin Curtis. In Connecticut he owned and operated Stratton's Spa, a restaurant in Govenordale, Connecticut. He later worked for Pinkerton Security and Wells Fargo Security. He was a manager for Alden Associates. In the years after retirement he worked for the New London Day. He loved life and tried to live it to the fullest. He will be sadly missed by all whose lives he touched. He is survived by his children: Carroll Stratton Jr., Walter Stratton, Ranie Stratton, Rodrick Stratton,Randell Stratton, and Cindy (Stratton) Bernard, all of Connecticut, and Sharon Stratton-Tarbox and her husband, Mark Tarbox, of Derby; by grandchildren: Ashleigh and Shawna Stratton-Tarbox, Shane and Niko Bernard, Wendy and John Stratton, Dereck, Stacey, and Rachel Stratton, Jerrod and Zachary Stratton, and Haley Stratton; by one great-grandchild, Kayla M. Welch; and by one sister, Betty (Stratton) Limlaw, of Newport. A memorial service was held January 6 at the Gagne Piechowski Funeral Home in Jewett City. Interment was at the Pachaug Cemetery in Griswold, Connecticut.

, 38, of Derby Line died suddenly on Sunday, January 8, 2005. Mr. Cole was born February 8, 1967, a son of Nancy (Riegel) and Richard Cole and the late Andrew "Babe" Sanville. He was a 1985 graduate of North Country Union High School. He was a mechanic and worked as a machinist at Tivoly. He owned and operated Cole's Camper and RV Repair. He was a very proud member of the Derby Line Fire Department for over 15 years, where he also served as secretary and treasurer. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Derby Line, St. Edward's Council No. 9646. He enjoyed his motorcycle, gram and grampa's camp, family gatherings, and especially the Polar Plunge with his daughter Tabitha. He is survived by his wife, Kim (Bean) Cole, of Derby Line, who he married on August 22, 1992; by his daughter, "daddy's little girl" Tabitha Cole of Derby Line; by his parents, Richard and Nancy Cole, of North Troy; by his sisters Tina Therrien and her husband, Mark, of Newport and Jana Therrien and her husband, Kevin, of Newport Center; by his nieces and nephews: Corey, Nathan, Kristin, Jessica, Nicole, and Chantal Therrien, Courtney and Justin Healy, Joshua and Travis Hamill, and Michael, DeAnna, and Brian Paré; by his sisters-in-law: Robin Hamill and her husband, Roy, and North Troy, Tina Paré and her husband, Michael Sr., of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Julie Healy and her husband, Michael, of Barton; by his father- and mother-in-law, Niles and Yolande Bean, of North Troy; and by two great nieces. , 72, of North Troy died January 15, 2006, in Newport after a brief illness. Mrs. Dobler was born December 2, 1933, in North Troy, a daughter of Sanford and Agnes (Gibeault) Cota. On July 9, 1955, she married Louis Dobler Sr., who predeceased her on January 16, 1985. They owned and operated Dobler's Cash Store for over 20 years. She enjoyed quilting, much to the delight of family and friends. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who delighted in having her family visit. She enjoyed family get-togethers. , 63, died after losing her brave battle with cancer on January 14, 2006, with her family embracing her journey to peace. Mrs. Rowland was born on October 4, 1942, in Barton to Raymond and Mildred (Smith) Drew. She attended Barton Graded School and graduated from Newport High School in 1960. She worked for 25 years at Bogner of America. She also worked at Vermont Teddy Bear Company and MSA before retiring last summer. She enjoyed being with her family first, playing cards, going on shopping trips, and visiting with close friends. She is remembered for touching people's lives with her kind words, gentle persona, sense of humor, and sincere unselfishness. She leaves her two daughters and much loved sons-in-law Lori and Paul Royer of Newport and Julie and Michael Nelson of Orleans; her much loved grandchildren: Andrea and Lisa Royer and David, Danielle, and Elysha Nelson; her dearly loved sister and brother-in-law Marilyn and Robert Duckless of Brattleboro and their family from Keene, New Hampshire. Many great friends who she genuinely cherished included Bev, Ann, Dot, and Debbie. Her beloved furry friend Mr. Chips is now a permanent resident with her daughter Julie and family. Her family celebrated Mrs. Rowland's life January 18 at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel in Newport with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. Spring interment will be held in Westlook Cemetery in Glover. The family finds solace in the fact that Mrs. Rowland is in a better place. , 80, of Derby died in Newport on Sunday, January 15, 2006. Mr. DeRoehn was born on April 29, 1925, in Lowell, Massachusetts, a son of Eric and Alice (Burrill)DeRoehn. He attended Varnum Junior High and Lowell High School. In his senior year of high school, 1943, he signed up and enlisted in the Army Air Corps. Upon reaching his eighteenth birthday, he left school and went into the Air Force. He had basic training in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and went to Seymour-Johnson Field. He then served out the war in the South Pacific, New Guinea, Morath, and the Philippines. Upon leaving the service in 1945 he and his family moved to Derby, where his folks bought a general store. In 1952 he married Colleen Crowe. While working in the store he started a printing business part time, The Derby Press. After selling this business in 1960 he worked at the Derby Post Office. Over the years he worked his way up and became postmaster in 1974, retiring in 1989. He is survived by his wife, Colleen, of Derby; by his sons: James DeRoehn and his wife, Carole, of Derby, William DeRoehn and his wife, Darlene, of Hyde Park, and Michael DeRoehn and his wife, Chastity, of Derby; by his grandchildren: Jackie, Tony, Angela, Mariah, Meagan, and Justin; by his brother Don DeRoehn of Derby; and by nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Derby Center Cemetery. died in her sleep. Mrs. Gagnon was born in New Britain, Connecticut, on February 5, 1932, and resided in Connecticut with her husband and children until moving to Barton in 1991. She was the wife of Ronald A. Gagnon and the mother of Margery Sunbury and Sharon Vacca, both of Connecticut, Michael Gagnon of New Hampshire, Russell Gagnon of North Carolina, and Kathleen Martin of New York. She was also the grandmother of four Sunbury children, two Vacca children, Russell's two children, and Michael's one. She was a graduate of the Teachers College of Connecticut. She taught for two years. She left teaching to take up motherhood. She was often a travel group mother to dozens of youngsters when she worked with and headed the Bloomfield Legionettes and the Emerald Sabers, competing color guards of Bloomfield. On the retirement of her husband the couple moved into a log home, which was mostly her design, on the north shore of Crystal Lake in Barton. It has become a regular gathering place for the children and grandchildren each summer. She enjoyed puzzle solving and doing needlepoint. Some of her needlepoint creations continually fool guests into thinking they are paintings. She was justifiably proud of them. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 21, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Barton at 1 p.m. with the Reverend Robert Martin officiating. , 75, of North Troy died with his family by his side on Wednesday, January 11, 2006, following a brief illness. Mr. Ste.Marie, born on June 30, 1930, in North Troy, was a son of Leonidos and Lucienne (Bisson) Ste.Marie. He attended graded school in North Troy and high school in Plattsburgh, New York. He graduated from St. Michael's College with a degree in business in 1952. He served his country as a member of the United States Air Force then began working in the family-owned store, Ste.Marie's Market in North Troy, in 1954. It was in that same year, after a whirlwind romance, that on September 6 he married the love of his life, Normande Jean of Beebe, Quebec. Together they bought the store from his father in 1957 and ran it with their family until their retirement in 1998. Whether it was Santa Claus coming to town on the firetruck, Easter egg hunts, or hunting season contests, Ste.Marie's Market became a memorable gathering place for many generations. He took great pride in his store. He spent several winters in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and enjoyed the ocean, going for walks, hosting Super Bowl parties, playing cards and shuffleboard, sitting in "Norma's corner," and having his children and grandchildren fly down for vacations at the Moontide. He made many friends in Florida and looked forward to returning each year to escape the frigid Vermont weather. He was an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots fan and a self-taught computer wiz. He was proud of his involvement in the early development of Jay Peak. He was a member of the Elks Club, the Lions Club, the American Legion, and the Knights of Columbus. He was a devout Catholic and faithfully attended church at St. Vincent de Paul in North Troy and Our Lady, Star of the Sea, in New Smyrna Beach. His presence will be dearly missed at First Friday and Sunday morning Masses here and in Florida. , 68, of Newport died suddenly January 20, 2006, in Newport. Mr. Bullis was born August 28, 1937, in Orange, New Jersey, a son of Percy and Mildred (English) Bullis. On November 18, 1961, he married Gloria Simino, who predeceased him on September 15, 2005. He entered the United States Air Force and served his country during the Korean War. He was proprietor of Bullis Tax Service and was a tax preparer for many years in the community. He enjoyed collecting coins, stamps, trains, and leather products. Dorothy Ducharme

, left, with her aunt Dora Kinney. Dorothy Eva Ducharme, 89, died quietly on Friday evening, January 13, 2006, at her home in Castleton surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Ducharme was born September 22, 1916, in Newport, the eldest of three daughters of the late Henry and Lucinda (Kinney) Noe. As she was the oldest child growing up during the Depression, she was the only one to graduate from high school. She attended schools in Newport and Eden and Colebrook, New Hampshire, and then graduated from Orleans High School in 1935. Her first job was as a secretary with the Dickens-Kipp Insurance Agency. After this she was a secretary at Orleans High School. She married Cecil Ducharme in Newfane on June 26, 1939, and they made their first home in Providence, Rhode Island. While there, she took employment as a secretary at the London-Guarntie Accident Insurance Company. The couple moved to Brattleboro, and she worked for the Holstein Fresian Company until they moved to Springfield. Then, in 1952, the couple moved to Castleton with their two children, where they bought a farm on the East Hubbardton Road. While farming, the couple started the Player Piano Service in 1958. In 1966, they purchased the D&H Railroad Station in Castleton, operating it for the next 31 years before turning it over to their son Donald. Mr. Ducharme did the repair work, and Mrs. Ducharme did the bookkeeping and the sales work. During the time she was on the farm, she was very active with the Home Dem Club and was the hot lunch cook at the North Brittan School. After her retirement she volunteered her time at the Castleton Town Offices, where her daughter worked. She also enjoyed baking, playing bingo, growing flowers, and traveling to Orleans to visit her sisters and to reconnect with her roots. She is survived by her daughter Mary Ann Jakubowski and her husband, Val; by her son Donald Ducharme Sr. and his wife, Valerie; by five grandsons: Michael Jakubowski and his wife, Laura, William Jakubowski and his wife, Bridget, Donald Ducharme Jr. and his wife, Kara, Daniel Ducharme and his wife, Heather, and Walter Ducharme and his wife, Amy; by five great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter; by her sister Marjorie Burdick of Orleans; by five nephews; and by great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Cecil, in 1989; by her sister Stella Coathup in 2003; by her niece Christine Messer in 1998; by her niece Patricia Rossier in 2001; and by her nephew the Reverend Bernard L. Rossier Jr. in 2004. Funeral services were held January 17 at the Ducharme Funeral Home (owned and operated by her grandson Walter) in Castleton. The Reverend Ashley Meade, pastor of the Dresden Baptist Church, and President Thomas Sawyer of the Rutland branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints concelebrated the service. In addition, words of remembrance were offered by her son Donald and her grandson Walter. Her daughter MaryAnn led the congregation in the Roman Catholic rosary. She will be laid to rest in the family lot in the spring in Hillside Cemetery in Castleton. Memorial contributions may be given to the charity of one's choice.

, 59, of Newport died peacefully at his home on Monday, January 16, 2006, with his loving family by his side. Mr. Hilson served his country honorably during the Vietnam War. He touched many lives with his sense and his humor. He will be greatly missed. He leaves his wife, Joyce; daughters Monica (Hilson) Krautheim and her husband, Gerry, of New Mexico and Megan Hilson of New York City; son Shelby Hilson; and many friends in Newport. , 86, of Craftsbury, died at her home on January 17, 2006. Mrs. Merrill was born June 18, 1919, in New York City, a daughter of Martin Wehncke and Evangelline (Cole) Wehncke. She attended Barnard College and was a graduate of Montclair State Teachers College in New Jersey. She taught in Richford and Northfield prior to her marriage on August 16, 1947, to Robert Merrill. She later taught in Orleans and Swanton. For over 25 years, she served as the secretary and treasurer of the Branch Cemetery Association. She volunteered for the Vermont Children's Aid Society and was a former member of the Searchlight Club. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. Her fondest recollections included train travel and working as a telephone switchboard operator in Craftsbury. She is survived by a brother, John Wehncke, of Chilmark, Massachusetts; by three daughters: Mary Ann of Craftsbury, Nancy of Burlington, Jane and David Linck of Craftsbury; and by two grandchildren, Jennifer and Robert Linck of Craftsbury. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert; and by a daughter, Martha Jenkins. A private memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family. , 67, of Irasburg, beloved husband of Alice Coderre, died in Lebanon, New Hampshire, on Saturday January 21, 2006. Mr. Coderre was born on November 30, 1938, in North Troy, a son of Eddy and Fabiola (Vachon) Coderre. He married Alice Peters, who survives him, on March 26, 1960. He owned and operated the family farms for several years and also did carpentry work. He served in the Vermont National Guard for eight years. He and his wife enjoyed day trips, going to Florida, and visiting other states. Mr. Coderre loved four wheeling, playing cards, and was a loving husband, father, grandfather who totally enjoyed his grandchildren and was very involved with any member of the family and activities as they were growing up. He is survived by his wife, Alice, of Irasburg, his children, Sherman and Michelle Coderre of Errol, New Hampshire; Ed and Shirley Coderre of Irasburg, Tina Hall of Barton, Tealla and Roger Rodrigue of Derby, and Trina and Robert Burdick of St. Johnsbury, and by 12 grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Marcel Coderre of Irasburg, Donald and Jeanette Coderre of Lowell, Eugene Coderre of Orleans, and Raymond and Tammy Coderre of Barton, and by his sisters, Jeanette Geraw of Orleans, Giselle and Robert Damon of Morgan, Cecile Arel of Newport, Estelle and Alfred Wheeler of Newport Center, and Desneiges and Chester Geraw of Glover, and by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother Lucien and a sister Rita. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 25, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, 4670 Darling Hill Road, Newport (formerly Sias Ave). Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, January 26, at the St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Orleans with the Reverend Daniel Rupp celebrating a Mass of Christian burial. Spring interment will be in St. Theresa's Cemetery in Orleans. , 29, of Albany Center died suddenly January 5, 2006. Ms. Fontaine leaves a much-beloved six-year-old daughter, Alexis LorinLoukes, whose father is Karl Loukes of Newport. Alexis has two half-sisters, Holly and Hannah. Ms. Fontaine had earned associate's and bachelor's degrees and worked as a substitute teacher at North Country Union High School. Her father, Alain Fontaine, and grandparents Phillip and Margaret Malshuk and Romeo and Irene Beaudry predeceased her. She leaves her mother, Sheila Farrell; stepfather, Phil Beaudry; brother Zach; sister Tara; grandmother Phyllis Gable; and her godparents, aunt AlineLaMadeleine and uncle Ronald LaMadeleine. Her many aunts and uncles include Peter Malshuk, Douglas and Bernadette Brace, Gerard and Helen Fontaine, Lionel and Laurette Fontaine, Ronald Fontaine, Mark and Diane Mudget, Real and Rose Fontaine, Marcel and Penny Fontaine, Peggy Fontaine, Noella Fontaine, Leo Beaudry, Rachel Illingsworth, Yvette Beaudry, and Doreen Beaudry; and many cousins. Her life was devoted to her daughter. She was in the process of making a new home on her own land. She loved animals and flowers and enjoyed swimming, dancing, playing video games, and bowling. , 82, died and went to be with the Lord after a battle with cancer. Mrs. King had been a resident of the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehab Center since last June. She was born in North Troy on November 18, 1924, to Herbert and Laura Lee. On August 5, 1945, she married Elum King, who survives her and is also a resident of the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehab Center in St. Johnsbury. She leaves her only child, her daughter, Janice Gray, of North Concord; her loving son-in-law, Stuart Gray, of North Concord; three grandchildren: Joanne Wright of Lisbon, New Hampshire, Jeffrey Gray of Florida, and Kevin Gray of Concord and their spouses Christopher Wright Sr. and Katrina Gray; seven great-grandchildren: Chris Jr. and Aaron Wright of Lisbon and Brandon, Ryan, Gregory, Dylan, and Kaylee Elizabeth Gray; her sister Lucy Murphy and her husband, Douglas, of St. Johnsbury; her brother Orland Lee of St. Johnsbury; a very special person, Dorcas Lee, of St. Johnsbury; a very special sister-in-law, Frances Giroux, of Lancaster, New Hampshire; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; and by her brothers: Walter, Donald, and Robert Lee. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be in the spring in the family lot in Newport Center. She leaves many special people who brought sunshine into her life.
