Donna Margaret Day
....show
, 91, a lifelong resident of Bradenton and Palmetto, Florida, and a frequent visitor to West Glover for the past 30 years, died at her home in Palmetto on Tuesday night, November 21, 2006. Donna and her twin sister, Doris Leland, who was with her when she died, were born in Elyria, Ohio, on May 22, 1915. Her parents had traveled back there for the occasion of the birth of the twins. At that time there was only one doctor and one nurse in Bradenton. Now there are three hospitals and hundreds of doctors. Her parents, Lee S. and Maude (Allen) Day, had moved to Bradenton in 1911. Lee S. Day was a founder and vice president of the Manatee River National Bank and a prominent citrus grower. He was the first Republican elected to the Florida Legislature since Reconstruction. The family built the house on Wares Creek just across the bridge from town. There Donna grew up with her identical twin sister, Doris, and their older brother Bill. Every summer the family took long car trips, traveling all over the United States, and then to Europe when the twins were 18. Donna watched as the small town she grew up in became a city, and the entire central west coast of Florida developed into a congested area of houses, highways, and shopping centers. In their senior year in high school Donna and Doris took an art course at the newly formed Ringling Art School and drove their Studebaker coupe, with wire wheels and a jump seat, from the high school to Sarasota in ten minutes over roads with no traffic. That trip would now take at least a half-hour through thick traffic and dozens of stoplights. Back then they weren't required to take a driver's test. In fact, Donna never did take a driver's test until she was 90 and wanted to renew her license after she had let it lapse for a few years. (She passed but didn't start driving again.) Donna and Doris attended Duke University, graduating in 1937. On September 17, 1942, Donna married Edward Bradstreet Day Jr. She traveled with him during his training for the Army, in Georgia and New Jersey. When he returned from Europe after World War II, they lived in New York City, while he took graduate courses in journalism at Columbia University. Donna used to walk from their apartment to Broadway to see plays once a week when Brad was in night classes. They settled in Bradenton, where they raised their two daughters. Donna volunteered as a Girl Scout leader and a homeroom mother. She was a member of the Founders Circle of the Manatee River Garden Club. She was an original member of O Thirteen and EntreNous. She was a member of the Service Club. She and her husband, Brad, an avid sailor, were founding members of the Bradenton Yacht Club. Donna was a dedicated cookbook and recipe collector, and put together a book of family and friends' recipes, which she typed, with five pages in carbon paper, for her sister, her sister-in-law, and her daughters as well as herself. Donna raised orchids and was often asked to make corsages for brides. She was a regular and very sharp bridge player. She was a wonderful cook and loved to entertain her friends. She was an excellent seamstress, producing everything from slipcovers to Easter dresses with style and skill. Donna was a generous and loving person, always a lady. She enjoyed life. She will be sorely missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her two daughters, Betsy Day and her husband, Randy Williams, and Peggy Day Gibson and her husband, Dennis, and their three daughters: Leanne, Meg, and Liz, all of West Glover. She is also survived by her twin sister, Doris Leland, of Palmetto. Donna was predeceased by her husband, Brad, in 1977; and by her brother William "Bill" A. Day in 1982. A memorial service for Donna will be scheduled in Bradenton the week after Christmas. Her family will cook some of her favorite recipes and invite friends to bring in their own family favorites, along with the recipes, for a gathering of old friends and family traditions that live on.
