, 89, of Newport, formerly of Beebe Plain, died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, September 13, 2006. Mr. Greenwood was born in Stanstead, Quebec, on October 27, 1916, a son of John and Lenora (Powers) Greenwood. He served in the U.S. Army, working with the military police, during World War II. He was vice president of Union Butterfield's, a division of Litton Industries. He was extremely active in Indoor Recreation of Orleans County (IROC), both as a supporter and a generous benefactor. He was a 55-year member of Newport Memphremagog Lodge No. 65 of Free and Accepted Masons, a member and past president of the Boundary Rotary Club, and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member and past president of the Border Curling Club, a member of the Newport Country Club, and a member of the Dufferin Heights Country Club. He was a member of Community Circle and was a recipient of the Community Service Award given by Community National Bank. He served as a guardian ad litum and was a justice of the peace for the town of Derby. He played bridge and was an excellent carpenter who built his home and two cottages. He was always renovating for one family member or another. He and his wife enjoyed traveling, and they both loved being with family members. He enjoyed gardening. On June 29, 1938, he married Philippa Bishop, who predeceased him on November 10, 2004. He is survived by his children: Faith Olsen of Newport, Charity Henderson and her husband, Doug, of Derby Line, Ida Whitcomb and her husband, John, of Elburn, Illinois, Hope Bertelson of Morgan, and Roy Greenwood and his wife, Karen, of Gardner, Massachusetts; by his brother Glendon Greenwood and his wife, Phyllis, of Derby; by his sister Euleta Guertin of Florida; by his sister-in-law Hattie Greenwood of Salem, New Hampshire; by five grandchildren; by nine great-grandchildren; and by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughters Rae and Joy; by his brothers Francis and Talcott; and by his son-in-law Roy Olsen. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 23, at the United Church of Newport at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Joy Toll-Chandler and the Reverend Martha Peck officiating. Merton L. White

, 79, of Sheffield died in Newport on Thursday, September 21, 2006, surrounded by family and friends. Mr. White was born in Brownington on March 31, 1927, a son of Leslie and Geneva (Moulton) White. He owned and operated a farm for over 35 years. While farming, he was also a logger, which continued for several years after he gave up farming. He also worked on road construction and spent many springs sugaring. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan, watching games on television or listening to them on the radio. He and his companion, Vivian, liked to travel throughout New England and especially enjoyed going to Maine. He liked to play bingo, cards, and scratch tickets. He also enjoyed gardening, much to the delight of family and friends. He is survived by his children: Wayne White and his wife, Janet, of North Carolina, Jerry White and his wife, Joanne, of Derby, Randy White and his wife, Pamela, of Browington, Brenda White and her fiancé, Andre Maclure, of Derby, Bruce White and his wife, Penny, of Derby, Brian White and his fiancée, Sherry Colby, of Derby, Paul White of Newport, and Gary White of Newport; and by his longtime companion, Vivian Trucott. He was blessed with her family, who brought him much comfort and joy over the last 25 years. He is also survived by his brothers: Leslie White and his wife, Carol, of Florida, Bernard White of Brownington, and Earl White and his wife, Donna, of North Carolina; by his sisters: Margaret Piper of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Dorothy Page and her husband, Kenneth, of Derby, Jean Dopp and her husband, Melvin, of Kirby, and Frances Aldrich and her husband, Alden, of Irasburg; by his sister-in-law Jean White of Hinsdale, Massachusetts; by 19 grandchildren; by 17 great-grandchildren; and by six half-brothers and -sisters and their families. He was predeceased by his wife, Arlene, in 1980; by his brother Russell White; by his sister Maris Hunt; by a grandson, Michael; and by two great-grandsons, Tyler and Brandon. Services were held September 26 at a Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. Interment followed at Pleasantview Cemetery in Orleans.
Pauline Viens

, 86, died September 1, 2006, in Sommerville, Massachusetts. Miss Viens was born in Derby, a daughter of Alfred and Paula (Marois) Viens. After her education at Sacred Heart School and the Ursuline Convent in Stanstead, Quebec, she moved to Sommerville. She spent over 30 years as a physical therapist and retired from this profession at Youville Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts. After her retirement she loved to travel and spent many a summer at the farm of her cousins Tillie and Zelma. She was a compassionate and caring person who always had a smile and a kind word to those she met. She will be sadly missed by her remaining family and friends. She is survived by two sisters, MarcelleViens of Sommerville and Martha Rodrigue and her husband, Roland, of Sherbrooke, Quebec; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Joseph and Leonard Viens. A Memorial Mass was held September 21 at St. Mary Star of Sea Catholic Church with the Reverend Karl Hahr officiating, Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.

, 60, of Barton and Stoughton, Massachusetts, died September 13, 2006. Mrs. Turbini was the loving wife of Joseph D. Turbini; mother of Laura LaFleur and her husband, Rene, of Lowell, Massachusetts; stepmother of Vicky, Lenny, and Damien Turbini; sister of Donna Biggs and Claire Sintoni of Marstons Mills, Massachusetts; and grandmother of Joseph, Robert, Gary, and Sachi. She is also survived by many loving cousins, nephews, and friends. A funeral was held at the Farley Funeral Home in Stoughton September 18 followed by a Funeral Mass at the Immaculate Conception Church in Stoughton. , 63, died September 11, 2006, at her home in Plymouth, New Hampshire, after a yearlong battle with cancer. Born in Flint, Michigan, Ms. Sutcliffe was the only child of Leon and Olga West. She was a graduate of Michigan State University and resided in Wenham, Massachusetts, for nearly two decades. She spent the last seven years in Newport, most recently working for NEK-TV. She is survived by her daughter Hilary Sutcliffe of Great Barrington, Massachusetts; by her son Gilbert Sutcliffe of Plymouth; and by two granddaughters. An Eck memorial service is planned for Saturday, September 30, at 1 p.m. at the Gateway Center in Newport.

, 77, of Newport died in Barton on Thursday, September 21, 2006. Mr. Franklin was born in St. Johnsbury on February 6, 1929, a son of H. Earl and Eva (Howe) Franklin. He was a graduate of St. Johnsbury Academy and Bryant College. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a stockbroker for many years. He was a member of the Newport Rotary Club, the Kiwanis Club, Newport Memphremagog Lodge No. 65 of Free and Accepted Masons, and American Legion Newport Post No. 21. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing golf and tennis, skiing, and reading. He was an active member of the United Church of Newport and its choir for over 45 years. On October 5, 1957, he married Mary Taylor, who predeceased him in 1997. He is survived by his children: Alan Franklin and his wife, Wendy, of Newport, Dianne Matos and her husband, Tony, of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, and Juliet Franklin of Malden, Massachusetts; and by his grandchildren: Michael and Matthew Matos and Andrew Franklin. He was predeceased by his brother Richard Franklin; and by his sister Mary Elene Woods. Funeral services were held September 26 at the United Church of Newport with the Reverend Joy Toll-Chandler officiating. Interment followed at the Lyndon Center Cemetery. , 94, of Derby died peacefully September 19, 2006, at the Derby Green nursing home. Mrs. Davis was born on September 10, 1912, in Derby, a daughter of Henry and Amelia (Blay) Davio. On March 23, 1935, she married John W. Davis, who predeceased her on September 24, 1973. She was a cook for the Derby Port Drive-In from when it was established until it closed in the mid-1970s. She also worked at the Jay Peak Resort snack bar and the Derby school system lunch program. She was a member of the Christmas Club and the Women's Social Union at the Derby United Church. In 2005 she was voted Senior of the Year. A reception was held in her honor at the Eastside Restaurant where Lieutenant Governor Brian Dubie presented the award. She enjoyed spending time with her family, working in her flower garden, playing board games, and cooking. She was known for her homemade doughnuts. She is survived by her children: Betty Nutbrown and her husband, Donald, of Orleans, June Arel and her husband, Roger, of Derby, Doris Batchelder and her husband, Ira, of Newport; by Richard Sykes, who was like a son, and his wife, Veronica, of Reading, Massachusetts; by her 13 grandchildren; by 21 great-grandchildren; by three great-great-grandchildren; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a granddaughter; by a great-grandson; and by seven brothers and sisters. Graveside services were held September 23 at the Derby Center Cemetery with the Reverend John Genco and the Reverend Fred Barker officiating. , 80, of Irasburg died peacefully at her home on September 19, 2006, with her family at her side. Mrs. Chaffee was born December 29, 1925, in Barton, a daughter ofPerle and Annie Mae (Wilder) Herman. On July 15, 1945, she married Elmer Chaffee Jr., who predeceased her in 1997. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, and knitting. She is survived by her children: Barbara Harley and her husband, Eugene, of Columbus, New Jersey, Thomas Chaffee of Barton, and Sandra Royer and her husband, Raymond Jr., of Orleans; by a brother, Perle Herman, of Johnson; by a sister, Eleanor Hermon, of Eden; by her grandchildren: Dennis Royer, Matthew Royer, Steven Royer, Eugene Hartley, Heather Hudson, and Troy Allen Chaffee Pappas; and by her great-grandchildren: Miranda Royer, Dustin Royer, Shawn Hudson, Cody Hartley, Skyla Pappas, Cole Royer, and Corrinne Royer. Bernard Ellis "Bernie" Basford

, 48, of Newport, beloved son of Ethel Basford, died peacefully September 22, 2006, at the Bel-Aire Quality Care Nursing Center in Newport from a long courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Basford was born on February 4, 1958, in Newport, a son of Ethel (Paul) and the late Edson G. Basford. He graduated from Lake Region Union High School in Orleans. He attended the Community College of Vermont in Newport. He enjoyed woodworking, carpentry, and using his computer. When his hair was long he gave ponytail locks to Locks of Love. He loved taking pictures and making people laugh. He really enjoyed life to the fullest. He is survived by his mother, Ethel Basford, of Orleans; by his sisters: Beverly Messier of Florida, Barbara Isham of Newbury, Phoebe Kimball of St. Johnsbury, Gloria White of Greensboro Bend, Lorraine Gilfillan of Nashua, New Hampshire, Myrna Brosseau of Hardwick, and Beatrice Whittier of Orleans; by a sister-in-law, Linda Basford, of Orleans; and by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Edson G. Basford, on May 6, 1963; and by his two brothers, Charles Basford on June 5, 1960, while he was stationed in Germany, and Brian Basford on September 20, 2003. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, September 28, at Westlook Cemetery in Glover.
