, 66, of Norton died peacefully September 1, 2006, at his home. Mr. Melchor was born January 16, 1940, in Morganton, North Carolina, a son of Lawson Sr. and Margaret (Robinson) Melchor. He entered the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged on May 19, 1958. He owned and operated his own welding business, Awesome Welding, in Norton for over 20 years. He loved snowmobiling, looking for moose horns, and stock car racing. He had formerly raced motorcycles. He is survived by his children: Heidi Melchor of Keene, New Hampshire, Lawson E. Melchor III and his wife, Laura, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Michael Melchor of Providence, Rhode Island; by three grandchildren: Sarah, Rachel, and Connor; by his father, Lawson E. Melchor Sr., of Ludlow; by a sister, Judy Lazetera, of Ludlow; by his longtime companion, Norma Fletcher, of Norton; and by Ms. Fletcher's son Raymond Buck of Oak Creek, Colorado. Roland J. Pion

, 72, died at his home in Lowell on Thursday, August 31, 2006. Mr. Pion was born in Westfield on December 18, 1933, a son of the late Ovila and Olivina (Meunier) Pion. On August 28, 1965, he married HuguetteChoquette, who survives him. He worked as a truck driver for the Vermont Asbestos Group, for 35 years. He served in the Vermont National Guard and retired from the Vermont Air Guard after 22 years of service. He was a fourth-degree member of Knights of Columbus Newport Gibbons Assembly No. 1157, a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus of Troy, and a member of American Legion Jay Peak Post No. 28. He held the Lowell town offices of lister, auditor, school board director, and justice of the peace. He was a longtime member of the Lowell Volunteer Fire Department. He held the offices of president and treasurer of the International Union of Cement, Lime and Gypsum Workers at the asbestos mines in Lowell. He enjoyed reading and hunting. He and his wife enjoyed traveling. He especially enjoyed visits from his granddaughters and being with family. Besides his wife, Huguette, he is survived by his daughter Anita Selec her husband, Vladimir; by his granddaughters Anja and Katarina of Burlington; by his brothers Raymond Pion and his wife, Gilberte, of Lowell and Roger Pion and his wife, Annette, of Brownington; by his sister Solange McAllister of Hardwick; and by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Rene and Sam; and by his sisters Jeanette Benoit and Marie Blanche Boudreau. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated September 2 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Lowell with the Reverend Henry Mlinganisa officiating. Interment followed at St. Ignatius Cemetery in Lowell with military honors. Carol S. Hanson

, 65, of Craftsbury died suddenly on September 2, 2006, at Copley Hospital. Ms. Hanson was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on May 5, 1941, a daughter of Walter B. Hanson Jr. and Dorothy E. (Slocum) Hanson. She was educated at schools in Rhode Island, Vermont, and California. She was a longtime resident of Barre and moved to Craftsbury in 1982. In the past, she had been employed with the state of Vermont, International Coins & Currency, and Capital City Press. She was also employed as a computer mentor with Vermont Associates for Training and Development in Newport and at the Vermont Children's Forum. She had recently retired. She was a lifelong Democrat and supported many liberal causes. She was a dedicated gardener, an avocation she shared with her husband, Malcolm. She had a wonderful sense of the absurd and lightened many a serious moment with her humor. She was an omnivorous reader and devoted many volunteer hours to the Craftsbury Public Library. She is survived by her husband, Malcolm G. Sandison, of Craftsbury; by her son Peter M. Sinclair of Barre; and by her two beloved granddaughters, Mariah R. Sinclair and Rebecca C. Sinclair of Montpelier. She was predeceased by her son Brian S. Sinclair of Phoenix, Arizona. She was previously married to Michael C. Sinclair of Illinois. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, September 10, at the United Church of Craftsbury with the Reverend Neil Carr officiating. Those who would like to do something in Ms. Hanson's memory may buy books for children and read them to them.

, 81, of Derby died in Newport on Thursday, August 31, 2006. Mr. Worth was born in Holland on May 10, 1925, a son of the late Riley and Sadie (Judd) Worth. On September 25, 1948, he married Loella Newman, who predeceased him on December 12, 1993. He entered the United States Navy on July 21, 1944, and was honorably discharged on July 3, 1946, serving his country during World War II. He owned and operated a farm in Holland for many years. He was a self-employed carpenter, an assistant rural route mailman in Derby Line, and a machinist at Butterfield's. He was a member of the North Country Union High School and Holland school boards for 22 years, a moderator for the town of Holland, and a justice of the peace. He was a member and past exalted ruler of the Newport Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks No. 2105, a member of American Legion Newport Post No. 21, and a member of the Holland Historical Society. He was an Elks cribbage player and participated in many statewide cribbage tournaments in which he was runner-up and winner numerous times. He enjoyed playing bingo and was an avid golfer. He is survived by his children: Cheryl Marandola and her husband, Richard, of St. Johnsbury, William "Bill" Worth and his wife, JoAnne, of Newport, Gregory Worth and his wife, Anne, of Hyde Park, and Jeffrey Worth of Essex Junction; by his grandchildren: Erin, Nicholas, Brittaney, Lisa, Justin, Ryan, Nathan, Evan, Riley, Stephanie, Samantha, and Sean; by his great-grandchildren Ethan and Sylvie Kyla June; by his companion, Phyllis Davio, of Newport; by his sisters Wanita Stone of Tallahassee, Florida, and Phyllis Armstrong and her husband, William, of Derby Line; and by his brother-in-law Carroll Fox of Derby. Funeral services were held September 6 at the Derby United Church with the Reverend John Genco officiating. Interment followed at Mead Hill Cemetery in Holland with full military honors. William Charles West

, 91, of Concord, New Hampshire, died Sunday, September 3, 2006, at his home. Mr. West was born in Concord and was a lifelong resident. He was a son of the late William E. and Catherine E. Humphrey West. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II. After the service he was employed by the public works department for the city of Concord as a mechanic and foreman. He was a life member of the Masonic Temple Anchor Lodge No. 112 in East Hampton, Connecticut. He was involved in several large projects around the state, such as the St. Lawrence Seaway project, the construction and development on the Interstate 89 and Interstate 93 intersection, and the Hopkinton dam project while working for Palazzi and Audley construction. He was an avid Boston Red Sox fan. He loved to fish andhunt and in his younger years enjoyed bowling. He was predeceased by his wife, Cora A. (Flynn) West, who died in 1990; by two sisters, Catherine Mae O'Connor and Virginia Dennerly; and by one brother, Robert H. West Sr. He is survived by nephew Robert H. West Jr. of Concord; by one niece Hazel Pelillo of Concord; by brother-in-law Lyman Flynn and his wife, Lucille, of Morgan; by two sisters-in-law, Ruby and Betty Flynn, of Derby Line; and by other nieces and ephews. Funeral services were held September 13 in the chapel of the Waters Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Blossom Hill Cemetery in Concord.

, 82, of Hartford,Connecticut, died August 22, 2006, in Hartford after a three-year battle with strokes. Mr. Hilliard was a camper on Crystal Lake's eastern shore from 1928 to 1995 and a cabin owner from 1959 to 1995. He was instrumental in the Crystal Lake footpath controversy of 1989. He played in the Newport Volunteer Concert Band. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret, of Hartford; by daughter Janet Porriello of Wethersfield, Connecticut; by son Donald Lee Hilliard II of Los Angeles, California; and by two grandchildren.

of Manchester, Connecticut, died at home of pancreatic cancer on Monday, August 14, 2006. Ms. Haberern was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, a graduate of FairhavenHigh School, and lived in Padanaram, Massachusetts, while working as a teller at the Five Cent Savings Bank. Throughout her life she was a devoted wife, mother, and friend. She and her husband vacationed at JayPeak. She leaves her husband, William Michael Haberern Sr., of Manchester; her son and daughter-in-law, Barry Phillip O'Neill and Melissa Ann O'Neill, of Manchester; her two grandchildren, Madeleine Beisley O'Neill and Connor Haberern O'Neill; her brother Kenneth C. Hathaway of Rochester, Massachusetts; six nieces; nine nephews; and many friends in Vermont. She was predeceased by her husband, Phillip Augustus O'Neill Jr.; by her daughter Deborah Charlotte O'Neill; and by her brother William B. Hathaway Jr. A graveside service was held at East Cemetery in Manchester August 18. , 55, of NewportCenter died in Glover on Sunday, September 3, 2006. Mr. Gooley was born in Newport on March 22, 1951, a son of Russell and Pearl Madeline (Henson) Gooley. He was a graduate of North CountryUnionHigh School. He worked as a bus driver for NewportTownSchool and a truck driver for Agri-Mark. He was assistant fire chief for the Newport Center Fire Department. He helped repair the dam on Clyde Street in Newport and repaired half of his parents' home in NewportCenter after their fire. He worked as a waiter and a night watchman at The Balsams in New Hampshire. He walked the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to North Carolina. He loved animals, doing carpentry work, and fixing cars. He is survived by his mother, Pearl Madeline Gooley, of Newport Center; by his brother Wayne Gooley and his wife, Becky, of Troy; by his sister Mary Lynne Hunter and her husband, Henry Joseph, of Eddington, Maine; by his nieces and nephew: Bobby-Jo Rivard and her husband, Todd, of Newport, Tracy Gooley of Newport Center, and Henry Joseph Hunter IV of the United States Army; and by his great-nephew, Brandon Wells. , 84, of Newport died peacefully September 8, 2006, in Newport, surrounded by his family. Mr. DeVost was born November 29, 1921, in Norton, a son of Felix and Mary (Kehoe) DeVost. He was a veteran of World War II. For several years he was employed as a security guard for Jay Peak Resort. He enjoyed tinkering on cars, NASCAR, and watching the news. He is survived by 11 children: Patricia DeVost, Norman DeVost Jr. and his wife, Joni, of Hygate, Larry DeVost and his wife, Maurine, of Merrimack, New Hampshire, Steve DeVost of Newport, Doug DeVost of West Charleston, Robert DeVost of Bratleboro, Ron DeVost of Tennesee, Kathy DeVost, Richard DeVost and his wife, Barbara, of Coventry, Susan DeVost, and Diane Knowlton of Cisco, Texas; by a sister, Madora Matthews, of Groveton, New Hampshire; by the mother of his children, Phyllis E. DeVost; and by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Allen DeVost, in 1983. , 70, of Westmore died peacefully in her home on September 2, 2006. Mrs. Allard was the only child of Delwin and Irene (High) Bailey. She was born in Lyndon in 1935. She joins her devoted canine friend, Shilo, who predeceased her in the winter of 2006. She worked for Umbrella in St. Johnsbury and the Loyal Order of the Moose. She was a member of the Westmore Ladies Aid Society. She was an avid fan of NASCAR and driver Bobby Labonte. She loved to go dancing and socializing with her friends at Shelly's in West Burke. She is survived by her four children: Frederick L. Allard Jr. and wife, Melanie, of Lyndon, Vikki J. Stoddard and husband, Randy, of Lyndonville, Chris R. Allard of Lyndon Center, and Keith E. Allard of East Burke; by seven grandchildren; by five great-grandchildren; and by her loving feline companion, Angel. She also leaves behind close friends who were very supportive of her during her illness: Janet Grant, John and Linda Corey, and neighbors Vicki Simino and Richard Dibiri of Westmore.
