Edwin E. Harris

, resident of Littleton, N.H., owner and proprietor of The Clam Shell Restaurant in Littleton, died on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. Mr. Harris was 58 years old and died of pancreatic cancer after a courageously fought battle. Ed Harris was born on April 3, 1947, in Albany, N.Y., to Ruth Badgley, now deceased, and James Harris, who currently resides in West St. Paul, Minn. He grew up with three brothers, James Harris of Albany, N.Y., Robert Harris of Little Silver, N.J., and Gerald Harris, now deceased. Ed graduated from Searles High School in Great Barrington, N.Y., in 1965. Ed served in the U.S. Navy between the years of 1966-1970, earning the rank of quartermaster. Upon the U.S.S. Calcatterra., he navigated around the world twice and served in Antarctica, Operation Deep Freeze. After serving in the Navy, Ed moved to New Hampshire where he worked for the Mount Washington Hotel. He served as the purchasing agent for the hotel's dining services and then opened dining services at Bretton Woods Ski Area. In 1972, Ed married Debra Nast of Littleton. Together with Debbie's parents, Robert and Evelyn Nast, they opened The Clam Shell Restaurant in 1974. The restaurant, which was at one time a small snack bar owned by Nicholas Craigie of Littleton, opened with 42 seats. Through the years, The Clam Shell has gone through many transformations and developments under Ed's ownership and can now seat almost 400 people. Over time, Ed added a lounge with full entertainment, an in-house fish market, an in-house bakery, and a function room seating over 100 people. The Franconia Notch Brewery, owned by John Wolfenberger, moved onto the property in 1996 and their microbrews are now served on tap at The Clam Shell. The Clam Shell also specializes in off-site catering of weddings, funerals, and other special events, as well as offsite lobster bakes. Ed made The Clam Shell famous for its fresh seafood including live Maine lobsters, fried clams, and "Clam Shell Style" baked haddock. Other popular items include the homemade clam chowder and French onion soup, as well as the 40-item salad bar. The holiday buffets on Mother's Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, and New Year's Eve have remained popular throughout the years. Ed worked hard to make The Clam Shell the best restaurant "North of the Notch" and never settled for anything less than the best food and service around. Ed's success in running the restaurant is reflected in the many customers that come back for good food and a good time year after year. Ed Harris was also active in many Littleton area organizations and was generous with his time and talents. He served as a director of the Littleton Chamber of Commerce and was a founder of the Hydroplane Regatta Boat Races on Moore Dam in the late 1970s and '80s. He opened up his restaurant weekly to the Littleton Rotary Club and Littleton Lions Club and also supported the Rotary Santa Program each Christmas, serving dinner and treats to the volunteers. A member of All Saints' Episcopal Church in Littleton, Ed built the beautiful "restaurant style" kitchen in the new parish center dedicated last year. In his free time, Ed enjoyed golfing and watching sports. He could often be found in The Clam Shell lounge cheering on The Red Sox or The Patriots with the rest of the Clam Shell "gang." He also enjoyed spending time at the beach, both oceans and lakes. Ed's last days were spent relaxing on Lake Sunapee, N.H., where he was able to find peace before his death. Known as "Big One" or "Big Ed" to many, Ed Harris' large stature was matched only by his large heart. His quick wit and quiet way of caring will be missed by those close to him, especially his wife of 33 years, Debbie, and daughters Katherine Harris of East Windsor, N.J., and Jennifer and Jason Ayotte of Manchester, N.H. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 6 at 11 a.m. at All Saint's Episcopal Church in Littleton, N.H. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to All Saint's Episcopal Church, 29 School St., Littleton, NH 03561.
