, 62, of Island Pond died in Newport on Sunday, August 28, 2005. Mr. Crowe was born in Island Pond on July 19, 1943, a son of Thomas and Hazel (Chase) Crowe. After graduating from Brighton High School, he entered the U.S. Navy. He worked for the railroad in Connecticut and the AT&T Telephone Company in Newport, and he worked as a hairdresser in Jaffrey, New Hampshire, for a time. He was a member of American Legion Brighton Post No. 80. He enjoyed all sports. He is survived by his daughter Tracey Rousseau of Sugar Hill, Georgia; by his grandchildren: Jesse, Mick, Zoe, Cameron, and Thomas; by his special beloved friend, Pearl Wallace, of Island Pond; by his brother Bradley Crowe and his wife, Sharon, of Newport; by his sisters Sandra Doucette and her husband, Fred, of Derby and Mary Twofoot and her husband, Wyman, of Derby; by his daughter-in-law Iris Crowe of North Carolina; by his brother-in-law Gordon Daggett; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Tommy in 2003; by his parents, Thomas and Hazel; and by his sister Colleen Daggett. Funeral services were held September 1 at the funeral home in Island Pond with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. , 59, of Fairbanks, Alaska, died suddenly August 27, 2005, while fishing in Valdez, Alaska. Mr. Richardson was born to Percy and Ilene Richardson of Lowell on July 5, 1946. He graduated from Newport Center High School and soon after married Phyllis Woodard. They had one son and later divorced. He was called into the Army in April 1966, served 13 months in Vietnam, and retired from the Army in April 1968. Alaska had always intrigued him, and he moved there in 1992. He found employment as a master electrician. He married Pamela Corse Horner in 1994. She shared his interest in fishing, and they spent many happy weekends in Valdez fishing from their 23-foot pleasure boat. He leaves his wife, Pam, of Fairbanks; his son, Chad, of Rochester; two stepdaughters, Samantha and Nikki, of Johnson; his mother, Ilene, of Lowell; five brothers and a sister and their families: Dwight and Jack of Lowell, David of Montgomery, Brett of Williston, Barry of Iraq, and Susan of Manassas Park, Virginia; four grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Services will be held Wednesday, September 14, at 2 p.m., at the Lowell Congregational Church with Pastor Duane Hodgeman officiating.

, 15, of Irasburg died suddenly in Newport on Sunday, September 4, 2005. Mr. St.Onge was born in Mons, Belgium, on March 1, 1990, a son of Kevin Sr. and Marilyn (Burgett) St.Onge. He was a sophomore at Lake Region Union High School. He loved the six years he lived in Iceland, where he was on the swim team and received many first-place ribbons. He enjoyed playing guitar, swimming, riding his bike, snowboarding, and spending his time with his dog Mac. He is survived by his parents, Kevin and Marilyn St.Onge, of Irasburg; by his brother Michael Shane Zavodny of the U.S. Army, by his sisters: Kerry Ann Sommer of Berlin, New Hampshire, Georgia Nichola Zavodny of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Kelly Marie Gibson of the U.S. Air Force; by his grandparents Neil and Shirley St.Onge of Irasburg; by his aunts and uncles: Roy Burgett, Kenneth Burgett, Larry Burgett, Danny Burgett, Garry Burgett, Caroline Gilmore, Tammy Brown, Amy Dalpe and her husband Steve, and Deana Cowles; by his nephews: Austin, Ethan, and Seth Potts; and by his close cousins Kyle and Konnor Dalpe and numerous other cousins. He was predeceased by his grandparents Fred and Lee Ann Burgett; and by an aunt, Carol Ann St.Onge. , 83, died peacefully at Derby Green in Derby on Thursday, September 15, 2005. Mrs. Brooks was born in Barton on March 1, 1922, a daughter of Dolphus and Audore (Renault) Valley. She lived much of her life in Connecticut and Florida but returned to Vermont in her retirement years. She attended St. Paul's School and was a member of that parish. She trained as a barber and owned her own shop in Connecticut. She enjoyed fishing and hunting with her nephews Wayne and Michael. In her earlier years she loved to sing and play her guitar. She is survived by one sister, Sylvia Contasta; by sisters-in-law Evelyn and Fay Valley; and by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; by sisters Evelyn Friend and Ella Hendy; by brothers: Raymond, Lawrence, and Rene; and by a dear friend, Elsinore Kennison. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Paul's on Saturday, September 24, at noon with Reverend Father Daniel Rupp officiating. , 69, of Derby died September 16, 2005, in Newport. Mrs. Carpenter was born on December 31, 1935, in East Charleston, a daughter of Hugh and Ruby (Maxwell) Flynn. On September 12, 1953, she married James Carpenter. She worked at many different jobs in Vermont and Florida, including making hot lunches and selling clothing and carpets. She and her husband lived in Florida for 18 years and traveled back and forth for several more. She worked with many different arts and crafts to the delight of her family and friends. She also liked to play cards and bingo and enjoyed getting together with family and friends. When her husband was very involved with the Elks Club, she was always there by his side helping with projects that came with being an officer of the club and enjoying the social activities of the local Elks and those in Florida. She is survived by her husband, Jim; by children: Steve Carpenter of Derby, Ken Carpenter and his wife, Paula, of St. Johnsbury, Sally Carpenter of Hyde Park, and James Carpenter Jr. of Lake Worth, Florida; by eight grandchildren; by two great-grandchildren; by her mother, Ruby Flynn, of Derby Line; by her brother David Flynn and his wife, Wanda, of Derby; by her sister Diana Emerson and her husband, Ernie, of Holland; and by several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles. She was predeceased by her father, Hugh; and by her sister Alice Hodgdon and her husband, David. , 92, of Bethel died Friday afternoon, September 16, 2005, at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph. Mr. Mandigo was born July 16, 1913, in Moretown, a son of Arthur A. and Lucia (Harvey) Mandigo. He graduated from Randolph High School in 1931, attended Dartmouth College, and received his bachelor of science from the University of Vermont in 1937. He married Enid Wakeman of Barton in 1934. After her death, he married Mildred Cone Tewksbury in 1983. She died in 1996. He married Nancy Harlan in Randolph on December 23, 2000. The son of a Methodist minister, he lived in many towns, moving to Glover in 1948, where he farmed with his wife, Enid. He was a high school vocational agriculture teacher in Winchester, New Hampshire from 1937 to 1941, Barton from 1942 to 1946, and Orleans from 1948 to 1960. He had been a distributor and insemination instructor for Curtiss Breeding Service and was a part-time Morgan horse breeder. He had been active in Glover town affairs, having served as town lister, moderator, and clerk of the school board. He was past president and secretary of the Orleans County Farm Bureau and past director and judge for the Orleans County Fair Association. He was elected to the Vermont House of Representatives from District 28 in 1965, a position he held until serving six years as state senator from the Essex-Orleans District from 1974 to 1980. During his political career he had served as chairman of the Orleans County and Glover Republican committees, Vermont Republican State Committee Executive Committee Member, on the Ways and Means Committee from 1969 to 1972, and as Government Operations Committee Vice Chairman from 1973 to 1974. He had also served on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, where he was chairman for four years, Senate Health and Welfare Committee, the Joint Energy Commission, and the Vermont State Nuclear Advisory Committee. He was a co-sponsor, charter member, and vice chairman of the Administrative Rules Review Committee. He served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Detroit in 1980. He moved to Randolph from Glover in 1983 and to Bethel in 2000. His memberships included the United Churches of Glover and Randolph, the Northeast Kingdom Horseman's Association, the Brookfield Masonic Lodge, the Randolph Historical Society, and the Randolph Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice Committee. He enjoyed reading, woodworking, gardening, and raising collies. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Harlan Mandigo, of Bethel; stepsons John D. Harlan Jr. of Charleston and West Virginia and Merrill D. Harlan of Bethel; stepdaughters, Sally Tewksbury Cooper of Dade City, Florida, and Jane Turner of Spring Hill, Florida; four stepgrandchildren; and by seven stepgreat-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister Elizabeth Mandigo Berry. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 24, at the United Church of Randolph with Reverend Roger Wotton officiating. There are no calling hours. Burial will be 11 a.m. on Friday, October 14, at Westlook Cemetery in Glover. , 89, of Westfield died September 16, 2005, at his home, surrounded by his family. Mr. Wursthorn was born July 19, 1916, in Troy, a son of Berthold and May (Brahana) Wursthorn. After graduating from Newport High School, he joined his father's trucking business. On June 26, 1940, he married Marie Maxwell, who taught at the Hitchcock school on the Loop Road in Troy. During World War II he worked for a Connecticut munitions factory. After the war, he returned home to a full life of farming, logging, and trucking. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Marie (Maxwell) Wursthorn; by four children: Peter Andrew Wursthorn and his wife, Anne, of Marlborough, Connecticut, John Michael Wursthorn and his wife, Lise, of Underhill, Karl Roger Wursthorn and his wife, Vickey, of Troy, and David Francis Wursthorn and his wife, Joanne, of Troy; by five grandchildren: Karla, Sara, Valerie, Mark, and Justin; by five great-grandchildren: Anthony, Benjamin, Thomas, Kenan, and Karena; by five nephews: Rick, Rodney, Terry, Harold, and David; by three nieces: Francese, MaryEllen, and Sandra; and by two sisters, Rachel Miner of Omaha, Nebraska, and Patricia Fiske of Burlington. (Durgin) Gray, Mr. Gray was born November 10, 1934, in Morgan. He worked as an insurance representative for John Hancock Insurance Company for several years, most recently spending his time providing his services for friends and family. He married Virginia F. Musgrove. She predeceased him February 4, 2000, at their home away from home in Zephyrhills, Florida. She was a member of the Island Pond Congregational Church and a choir member. She was a member of the East Burke Historical Society Board and a member of the cemetery committee. She lived her life primarily as a devoted wife and a loving, caring, attentive mother and grandmother. She loved to write poetry, draw, and play bingo, among other endeavors. She is survived by her children: Roberta "Tooty" Chesney and her husband, Ronald, of Island Pond, Gloria Moulton and her special friend, William Leavens Sr., of Derby, Sandra Pond and her husband, Victor "Slugger," of Derby, Kathy Smith and her husband, Ricky, of East Haven, and Francis "Frank" Garrow and his special friend, Sheila Lamare, of Morgan; by grandchildren: Rhonda Fortin and family, Roger Chesney and family, Rolinda Mahoney and family, Robin Letourneau and son, Rachel Pepin and family, Christopher Pond and fiancée, Kevin Pond and wife, Jeremy Smith and son, Gwen Clark and son, and Jessie Smith; and by 13 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Sheehan was born on July 19, 1914, in Trenton, New Jersey, a daughter of Frederick A. and Catherine (Petrie) Wittenborn. She loved telling stories and opinions to her family and friends. She loved talking on the phone, and she loved all animals. She leaves her faithful cat, Buttons. She had made her home in Vermont since 1995, coming here from Florida and New Jersey. She is survived by her son Alden Sheehan and his wife, Cathie, of Albany; by two grandsons, John Sheehan and his wife, April, of Florence, New Jersey, and Paul Sheehan and his wife, Danielle, of Bristol, Pennsylvania; by two great-grandchildren, Aidan and Mackenzie Sheehan; and by a niece, a nephew, and cousins. Rita loved to travel and visit family in Iowa and took cruises to Alaska and the Caribbean. On November 11, 1950, she married Edwin Norway Sr., who predeceased her on June 12, 1997. She is survived by her children: Marvin Norway and his wife, Rose, of Gardner, Massachusetts, Theresa Morin and her husband, Ludger, of Richmond, New Hampshire, David Norway of Chester, Earl Norway of Chicopee, Massachusetts, Wayne Norway and his wife, Donna, of Morrisville, Harry Norway of Newport, and Sam Norway and his wife, Christine, of Marlow, New Hampshire; by 22 grandchildren; and by 12 great-grandchildren. , 67, of Wales, Massachusetts, formerly of Stafford, Connecticut, beloved wife of Fernand Gagne, formerly of Troy, died September 9, 2005, at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Rockville, Connecticut. Mrs. Gagne was born on May 11, 1938, in Richford, a daughter of the late Robert and Marion Gendron. She was a Cub Scout leader, an active sports mom, an avid Red Sox fan, and an avid bowler, scoring a high triple of 752. She was employed by the Journal Inquirer. Besides her husband of 49 years, she is survived by her two sons, Robert and Robin Gagne; by her grandson Christopher; by her brothers and sisters-in-law Robert and Diane Gendron, Alfred and Caroline Gendron, Leo and Polly Gendron, Gabrielle Page of Berwick, Maine, Alma and Arnold Sheltra of East Hampstead, New Hampshire, Margaret Meunier of Newport Center, and Marie and Roger Raboin of Colchester. , 87, died unexpectedly on September 4, 2005, at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca, New York. Mrs. Smith was born August 11, 1918, in West Charleston, a daughter of William Earl Eley and Jennie Belle LaCoss. The family moved to the Barton Electric Station, the early supplier of electricity to Charleston, when she was about two years old. She attended the one-room Plunkett School and completed her education at Charleston High School. After a short marriage to Charles Church and the birth of two of her children, Janice and Henry, she worked as a receptionist for Dr. Jordan in Newport and then in the Derby Post Office. After her marriage to Kenneth C. Smith, she moved back to West Charleston where their son Lloyd was born. She raised her three children, helped build a new home, and was town clerk and treasurer for the town of Charleston for about ten years. She also spent a few years as town lister and property tax appraiser. Her son Lloyd K. Smith, her sister Laura Eley Griffin, and son-in-law Marvin Terry predeceased her. She is survived by her husband of more than 50 years, Kenneth Smith; by her children Janice Church Terry and her husband, Marvin, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and Henry Church and his wife, Mary, of Ovid, New York; by ten grandchildren; by 15 great-grandchildren; by 12 great-great-grandchildren; by nephews Ronald and David Griffin and their families; and by many dear friends. A memorial service will take place at the Free Will Baptist Church in West Charleston on Saturday, October 8, at 10 a.m. A luncheon provided by the ladies of the church will be served to family and friends after the service. , 98, of Newport died September 26, 2005. Mrs. Albee was born in Hyde Park on September 23, 1907, a daughter of James and Carrie Montgomery. She was a 1927 graduate of People's Academy in Morrisville. She moved to North Troy in the fall of that year (one month before the Big Flood) and was employed as secretary at the Blair Veneer Company and later at the Valley Savings Bank. In 1930 she married Stanley B. Albee. They had one son, Terrill, and a daughter, Leslie, who died at birth. Her husband was a co-owner of the Orleans Candy Company. In 1939 she and her husband moved to Newport where she held employment at Lawson's Ford Company, Natole Motor Company, the American Maple Products Company, and later at the American Red Cross office. She was a member of the United Church, a member and past matron of the Order of Eastern Star, and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, which she joined during World War I. She is survived by her grandsons Aaron and Michael Albee; by three nieces: Ester Earle of Vernon, Linda Benn of Ontario, and Patricia Lauzon of Cazenovia, New York; by six nephews: Weldon Montgomery of Boulder, Michigan, Dale Montgomery of Colchester, Durwood Montgomery of Belmont, Donald Montgomery of Westerly, Rhode Island, Bruce Jones of Harker Heights, Texas, and Gregory Magoon of Laconia, New Hampshire; by a sister-in-law, Helen Montgomery, of Richford; by a brother-in-law, Alton Magoon, of Newport; by many great- and great-great-nieces and nephews; and by a special friend, Shirley Turner, of Newport. Besides her husband and children, she was predeceased by two sisters, Henrietta Clapper and Bertha Magoon; and by four brothers: Wallace, Daniel, Valley, and Randall Montgomery. She was "second mother" to her sister Bertha's children: Bruce, Linda, and Patty Jones and Gregg Magoon and was dearly loved by all her family and friends. She was a caring and giving person. She will be grievously missed. , 37, of Bristol, Connecticut, died suddenly on Friday, September 16, 2005. Mr. Roland was born July 28, 1968, in New Britain, Connecticut, a son of Ralph and Linda (Thibodeau) Roland. He was a grandson of Francis and Irene Roland, longtime residents of Derby. He also leaves a brother, Frank Roland, and a fiancée, Sherry MacDougall, and her two children. He was a nephew of Ellie Ingram and a cousin of Lisa Cox, Wendy Hilliard, and Carla Watson. He was known for his sense of humor, his honesty, and his sense of fairness. His wake and funeral were filled to capacity, which tells a lot about what kind of a decent man he was. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends and by all who knew him.
