of Canterbury Inn in St. Johnsbury, Vt., passed away at NVRH Monday morning, June 20, 2005, at the age of 94. His wife, Bernadine Clara McCarthy, predeceased him in 1995. He was born in Bristol, Conn., on Jan. 25, 1911, the son of Emilien and Phebe Cote. He lived in Bristol, Conn., until the age of 5 when he moved with his family to Concord, Vt. He attended Castleton School in Concord. He returned to Connecticut at age 21. He worked in New Departure in Bristol, Conn., for 11 years. On Dec. 28, 1935, he married Bernadine McCarthy in Broad Brook, Conn. He moved to Tunbridge, Vt., in 1946 where he worked as a dairy farmer until 1949 when he moved to Concord, Vt., and continued farming there. He worked as a construction worker, most notably as a wagon driller, working on many sections of Interstate 91. He retired at age 65. He sold his home in Concord where he had lived for 42 years in 1991. He and his wife then made their home in Leverett, Mass., and Ocala, Fla. In 2003, he moved to the Canterbury Inn and had made this his home. Mr. Cote is survived by four children, Agnes Beall and her husband John of Little Rock, Ark. (11620 Ashwood Drive, 72211), Patricia Cooper and her husband John of Leverett, Mass. (223 Long Plain Road, 01054), Herve Cote Jr. and his wife Anne of Concord, Vt. (138 Prospect St., 05824), and Kathleen Joslin and her husband Reginald of East Concord, Vt. (147 Joslin Drive, 05906); and foster sons, Stanley Carroll of Essex Jct., Vt. (2 Southdown Court, 05452), and William Dwire. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; his sister, Jeanne Bona of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; and many nieces and nephews and their families. He had a love of family. He enjoyed working in the many gardens that he planted, cutting firewood for his home, loved riding his snowmobile on his property and playing with his grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Bernadine Clara McCarthy in 1995; eight sisters, Alma Bramhall, Aline Joy Bayer, Lydia Brodeur, Alida Cota, Flora Goudreault, Louise Donaghy, Lillian Cote and Evelyn Forbes; four brothers, Joseph Cote, Leonard Cote, Albert "Curly" Cote and Raymond Cote. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church. Edna R. Berry

, 79, of Morrisville, Vt., died Tuesday, June 21, 2005, at Copley Manor in Morrisville. She was born in Kirby, Vt., Jan. 23, 1926, the daughter of Jessie and Anna (Burbank) Simpson. A resident of Morrisville for over 40 years, Edna was a member of the Morrisville VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries. A hard worker, her employment included the Yodler Motor Inn, Adams Mill in Stowe, Concord Manufacturing of Morrisville and several other places of employment. Edna was an avid bingo player, enjoyed fishing, playing cards and especially her dogs. Edna was predeceased by her husband, Clifford W. Berry, on Sept. 10, 1975. They had married in 1942. Survivors include a son, Clifford Berry of Johnson; a daughter, Charleen King of Morrisville; nine grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased in 1996 by her companion of 20 years, John Burke; and by a brother and sisters. Graveside services will be held Friday, June 24, at 10:30 a.m., in Pleasant View Cemetery, Morrisville. Following services, friends are invited to the Hyde Park VFW for refreshments and fellowship. John "George" Letrick

, 87, of Island Pond, Vt., passed away in Barton on Monday, June 20, 2005. He was born in Osceola Mills, Pa., on April 12, 1918, the son of Andrew and Catherine (Frank) Letrick. George was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. At 16 years of age, he worked in the coal mines in Pennsylvania. He then worked as a foreman for Bower Bearing Co. in Detroit. He was also a semi-pro boxer, known as "Young Letrick." George was also known by his CB handle "Squeaky Moccasin." He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Island Pond, the VFW Island Pond Random Post 2309, and the American Legion Island Pond Post 80. He was very proud of his service time and of being a member of the Legion and VFW. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and especially loved to hunt elk out west. On Feb. 12, 1972, John married the former Ann Carbonneau, who survives him. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Patricia Pelletier of Newburgh, Ind., and William Pelletier and his wife Beverly of Ann Arbor, Mich.; his stepgrandchildren, Janet, David, Aimee, Adriana and Breea; and his stepgreat-grandchildren, Zachariah and Ansel. George was the father and grandfather figure to these children in every way. He was predeceased by his brothers, Emil and Albert. A memorial service will be held at a later date. , 86, a lifelong Newark, Vt., resident, passed away Monday, June 20, 2005, at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center. Born March 16, 1919, in Newark, she is the daughter of the late Oliver and Abbie (Danyeau) Bigin. Elizabeth attended Newark schools, married George B. Morrill in 1934 and was married nearly 55 years at the time of his passing in 1989. One of Elizabeth's greatest joys was dancing. She also enjoyed hunting and gardening. Elizabeth is survived by three children, Don Morrill and his wife Dot of Newark, Horace Morrill and his wife Marilyn of Florida, and Hilda Trombly and her husband Dan of Newark; a sister, Renea Percy and her husband Milton; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including two special granddaughters, Gerry Farrington and her husband Aaron Collins, and Kimari McGoff, and a special great-granddaughter, Ava Collins. She was predeceased by an infant daughter, Louise Ann Morrill; two brothers; and two sisters. Visiting hours will be Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Pearsons Funeral Home, 70 Church St., Lyndonville. A funeral service will be Saturday, June 25, at 10 a.m., at the Newark Church with Mr. John Sleeper officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery. , 45, of Newport, Vt., passed away at his home on Monday, June 21, 2005. He was born in Gunnison, Colo., on Nov. 2, 1959, the son of Edward A. and Grace A. (Dresser) Billings. Peter enjoyed playing the guitar and was a member of several bands. Peter is survived by his parents, Edward and Grace Billings of Barton; his brothers, Jonathan A. Billings and his family of Fairfax, Va., and Ethan A. Billings and his family of Juneau, Alaska; his aunts, Carolyn Falby and her husband Clifford of Exeter, R.I., Joan Apel and her husband George of Vernon, Conn., and Janet Belber and her husband Jerry of Brimfield, Mass.; and by several cousins. , 91, of West Barnet, Vt., died peacefully Monday, June 20, 2005, at her residence, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born in Barre, Vt., on Dec. 15, 1913, and was the daughter of Walter and Ann Birnie Main Welch. Bernice graduated from Lyndon Normal School and became a school teacher. She taught in Orange, Walden and Peacham, and retired from the Barnet School District in 1968. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Barnet at West Barnet; was the church treasurer for 25 years and also belonged to their Women's Fellowship. Bernice was the tax collector in West Barnet for 60 years; a trustee of Peacham Academy for 60 years; Past Matron of Diamond Chapter No. 14 Order of Eastern Star, Danville, Vt.; and was a founding member of the Peacham Christmas Club. Bernice was predeceased by her beloved husband, Edward Russell Mackay, on May 11, 1975. Surviving relatives include one son, William Wallace Mackay and his wife Dayle of DeBary, Fla.; one daughter, Alison Evans Heffer and her husband Bruce of Aurora, Ontario; grandchildren, Julia and John Gerbrecht, Heather Evans and Roger Shirt, Jennifer, Russell and Matthew Mackay, Doug and Shannon Heffer and Karen Heffer; two great grandchildren, Evan and Adam Gerbrecht; one brother, Walter "Spicer" Main and his wife Dorothy of Groton, Vt.; and many devoted nieces, nephews and cousins. Three brothers and one sister predeceased her, James, Stanley and Charles Main and Mary Ford. Bonnie was born a daughter to Joseph Page and Elizabeth (Stimpson) Page Rasicot on March 12, 1951, in Woodsville, N.H. Bonnie was employed at the Clam Shell Restaurant, the Eastgate Motor Inn, and the Littleton Motel in Littleton for 32 years. She was an avid Red Sox fan. Surviving family members include her mother, Elizabeth Rasicot of North Haverhill, N.H.; one sister, Kathy Wells of Bradford; one brother, Carroll Page of Brattleboro, Vt.; one half-brother, Michael Page of Pennsylvania; three nieces, one nephew, and many great-nieces and -nephews. , age 19, died accidentally June 18, 2005, in Crested Butte, Colo. Tommy was born in Stratford, N.J., on Sept. 4, 1985. Tommy grew up in Franconia, N.H., and graduated Profile High School Class of 2003. Tommy had the love of the outdoors. He loved hiking, biking, snowboarding at Cannon Mountain, soccer, drums, music, rock climbing, baseball, building a log cabin with his friends and anything to push the extreme - like skydiving. At the time of his death Tommy was working for Cement Creek Tavern in Crested Butte. Surviving family members include his mother, Paula A. Giacobbe of Franconia, N.H.; his father, Thomas Giacobbe of Glouster, N.J.; his sister, Danielle E. Giacobbe of Scarborough, Maine; maternal grandparents, Philip and Annie Payette of Franconia, N.H.; and paternal grandparents, Dominic and Virginia Giacobbe of Ephiren, N.J.; uncles, Ralph Payette of Littleton, N.H., Charles, Christopher, James and Dominic Giacobbe, all of New Jersey; aunts, Karen Payette of Littleton, N.H., and Elaine Colton of New Jersey; and numerous cousins. Tommy's pets included his dogs, Bear and Shadow; his pet turtle, Filbert; and Nike, his cat. The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 28, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Pillsbury Funeral Home, 101 Union St., Littleton, N.H. Dale Merton Conley

of Derby, Vt., died June 24, 2005, in Newport, Vt. He was born in Westmore in 1918. He was a veteran of World War II, serving for two years in the island-hopping campaigns in the Pacific. He attended UVM, where he was active in Cakewalk productions, graduating in 1947. His first teaching job was in Woodstock; and in 1950, he brought his family to Derby, where he taught at Derby Academy. While teaching, Dale also ran a dairy farm and started a real estate and insurance business. After retiring from teaching, Dale worked full time in the business, Conley Country Real Estate and Insurance. Dale held offices in the Elks and the Lions clubs and was also a Shriner. Dale was survived by his wife, Lorraine (Taplin) Conley of Derby; and is survived by his son, Michael and his partner, Dr. Glen Elder of Derby and Burlington; his daughter, Jackie and her husband Ken Young of Derby. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Amanda Conley of Burlington, Jonathan Young of Telluride, Colo., and Christopher Young and his wife Meredith of Jay; also great-grandchildren, McAllister and Jackson Young of Jay. He was predeceased by a son, Jon, in 1975. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Lorraine was involved in the antique business and in the family business, Conley Country Real Estate. Bridge, gardening and family were most important to her. Lorraine is survived by her son, Michael and his partner, Dr. Glen Elder of Derby and Burlington; and her daughter, Jackie and her husband Ken Young of Derby. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Amanda Conley of Burlington, Jonathan Young of Telluride, Colo., and Christopher Young and his wife Meredith of Jay; also great-grandchildren, McAllister and Jackson Young of Jay. , 50, of Manchester, died Friday, June 24, 2005, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass., following a courageous battle against a long-term illness. Born and raised in Littleton, N.H., she was the daughter of Daniel P. and the late Ruth M. (Perry) Nute. Debbie graduated from Littleton High School and earned a bachelor's degree in music education from Plymouth State University. After a brief career in various school music programs along with office work in local businesses, Debbie found her passion for work was in the food service industry where she spent many years of service at the Puritan Back Room and most recently at the Nutfield Ale and Steak House. For many years, she provided piano tutoring services to children and adults. Debbie enjoyed gardening, crafts, crossword puzzles, music, and cherished her cats. She was a member of the Canadien Club and the VFW Womens Auxiliary Post 8214. Debbie leaves behind her loving husband of 15 years, Kevin R. Cronin of Manchester; stepchildren, Colleen Fields of Manchester and Kale Cronin of Sheldon, Vt.; her father, Daniel Nute of Littleton; sister, Janice Nute Severance of Concord; brothers, David Nute of Bedford and Jeffrey Nute of Littleton; along with a niece, a nephew and two stepgrandchildren, many cousins and caring friends. , age 99, passed away on Thursday, June 23, 2005, at the Lafayette Center in Franconia, N.H., just six days prior to her 100th birthday. Hazel was born a daughter to Frank E. and Celia E. (Clark) Jesseman, June 29, 1905, in Lisbon, N.H. She graduated from Littleton High School and Plymouth Normal School. She taught two years in Bethlehem in a one-room schoolhouse, grades 1-6. Hazel lived in Littleton most of her life and was a seamstress, housewife, and mother. She was well known in the area for her dressmaking. She enjoyed knitting, which she continued up until the day of her fall in May 2005, which put her into the hospital and was then transferred to the Lafayette Center. Surviving family members include two daughters, Jacquelin R. Blandin of Lee, N.H., and Nadine Boyle of Littleton, N.H.; two stepsons, Donald F. O'Keefe of Bethlehem, N.H., and John L. O'Keefe of Shady Cove, Ore.; 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Her husband of 50 years, Francis "Pat" O'Keefe, predeceased her in 1994; and a son, Walter "Chub" Blandin, predeceased her in 2004, as well as two grandchildren in previous years. A private graveside service will be held in the Wheeler Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Stephen E. Bascom officiating.

Born Dec. 25, 1917, in Lyndon, she is the daughter of the late Joseph C. and Cecil A. (Webster) Masure. Harriet attended area schools. She was a stitcher for many years at Glovers in St. Johnsbury. Harriet is survived by a sister, Annabelle Hodges of Danville; two brothers, Steve Masure of Lyndon and Duwayne Masure of Sutton; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by a longtime companion, Alfred Smith; two brothers, Philip W. Masure and Weybourne Masure; and two sisters, Phyllis Mitchell and Jean Stewart. A funeral service will be held today, June 27, at 2 p.m. at the Pearsons Funeral Home Chapel, located at 70 Church St., Lyndonville. Interment will follow in the Woodmont Cemetery in East Burke.
Carlyle "Carl" R. McGaffey

, 62, of 272 River Road, East Ryegate, Vt., died Monday, June 27, 2005, at his residence. Carl developed Parkinson's disease in 1990 and had been ill for the past three years. He was born in Barre, Vt., Sept. 7, 1942, son of Howard and Margaret Danforth McGaffey. Carl served as a medic with the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Conflict from 1965 to 1969. He worked for the Rock of Ages in Barre as a crane operator. He was a member of the Steel Workers Union and a member of Pulaski Lodge F & AM in Wells River, Vt. He attended the Presbyterian Church of South Ryegate, Vt., and was a Cub Scout master for four years. Carl loved to camp, fish and hunt. He was predeceased by his father, Howard McGaffey in September 1996; and his 22-year-old son, Scott R. McGaffey in February 1997. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Sylvia Minshull McGaffey of East Ryegate; a daughter, Crystal L. McGaffey of Wells River; and his mother, Margaret D. McGaffey also of Wells River. A calling hour will be held Thursday, June 30, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch St., Woodsville, N.H. It will conclude at 8 p.m. with a Masonic service. The funeral service will be held Friday, July 1, at 2 p.m. at the Ricker Funeral Home. The Rev. Catherine Cook of the South Ryegate Presbyterian Church will officiate. , age 82, of Crane Hill Road, Sugar Hill, N.H., passed away Monday, June 27, 2005, at the Littleton Regional Hospital. A native of Sugar Hill, Harley was born a son to Henry and Addie (Jesseman) Burt on Dec. 21, 1922. Harley was employed by the State of New Hampshire at Cannon Mountain for many years. He built their house in Sugar Hill and enjoyed working on his land. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and loved spending time with his family. Surviving family members include his wife, Sylvia (Elliott) Burt of Sugar Hill; one son, Earl Burt of Sugar Hill; five daughters, Linda DeMontigny of Bethlehem, N.H, Karen Burt of Albany, N.H, Vicky Burley of Cleveland, Tenn., Judy Mirabella of Intervale, N.H, and Suzie Bushby of Lisbon, N.H; nine grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. One brother and one daughter predeceased Harley. A graveside service will be held Friday, July 1, at 9 a.m. in the Sunnyside Cemetery in Sugar Hill, with the Rev. Lyn Winter officiating.
