Mrs. Letourneau was the beloved wife of Leon Letourneau and beloved mother of Nelson Letourneau and his wife, Judy, of Winooski. , 46, of Barton died of natural causes at his home unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 30, 2005. Mr. Turner was born in Newport on August 12, 1959, a son of Harold and Anne Marie (Joeckel) Turner. He worked as a manager for Amerigas. He first and foremost loved his children and all members of his family. He greatly enjoyed the outdoors, especially when cutting wood. His stepfather, Neil, was a loving, caring, and supportive person in his life. When in high school he liked playing hockey but enjoyed many other sports as well. He was a man who was loving, generous, funny, and giving and easily made friends. He could be counted on to always lend a helping hand. He just plain enjoyed life, and if that meant being funny and silly and making people happy, so be it. With his easy-going manner he was nevertheless a hard-working and conscientious individual. He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Anne Marie and Neil Purcell; by his children: Joey, Katy, and Elise of Georgia, Vermont; by the mother of his children, Monika; by his brothers Alan Turner and his wife, Denise, of Derby and Richard Turner and his wife, Debra, of New Mexico; by his sister Christine Sheltra and her husband, Kevin, of Barton; by numerous aunts and uncles; and by several nieces and nephews including: Matthew Turner of El Paso, Texas, Eric Turner of Fort Rucker, Alabama, Daniel Turner of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Jeffrey Turner of Derby, and Samantha Hodgdon of Barton. Funeral services were held December 4 at a Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend Robert Castle officiating. Interment will take place at the Derby Center Cemetery at a later date. John Ambrose Young

of Wolcott died December 1, 2005, on his ninety-third birthday. Mr. Young was born in Brooklyn, New York, the tenth son of Henry Arthur Flodman Young and Elizabeth Carrington Young. His 11 brothers and one sister all predeceased him. He spent his early years in Wilton, Connecticut, where he and two of his brothers founded Young's Nursery. In 1936 he married Eleanor Wiggin, who survives him. During World War II he came to Vermont to buy Christmas trees for sale at the nursery. He fell in love with Vermont and soon began what became his life's work - to grow and market nursery-grown balsam fir Christmas trees. He developed and perfected many of the techniques for raising trees as a crop, and his tree plantation was well known and widely visited by growers from the U.S., Canada, and Europe. He was a founder and active member of the Vermont-New Hampshire Christmas Tree Growers Association. He and his wife had been active in conservation issues. Among other efforts, they were instrumental in protecting Bear Swamp, a pristine forest and wetland in Wolcott. They had been involved in many other philanthropic activities. They have provided support for children in developing countries continuously for over 40 years and have supported many local and national charities. He served two terms on the Copley Hospital Board of Trustees. He was also active in local affairs. He served many terms on the Wolcott Board of Listers during a time of major changes in the town. After retiring from business activities, he and his wife traveled widely in Alaska, Mexico, Europe, Africa, Afghanistan, and the Near East, as well as within the continental U.S. He is survived by his two sons, Steven Burr Young and his wife, Jan Roy, of Wolcott, and Oran Reed Young and his wife, Gail Osherenko, of Santa Barbara, California; by two grandsons, Gordon Young and Thomas Young; by two granddaughters, Linda Young and Naomi Young; and by two great-grandsons, Nathaniel Gabriel Young and RoeanMcLellan Young. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 22, at 2 p.m. a St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Hardwick. Robert E. Shattuck

, 86, died Sunday, November 27, 2005, at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin. Born May 10, 1919, in Canaan, Mr. Shattuck was a son of Earl G. and Myrtle A. (Ripley) Shattuck. He attended elementary school in Canaan and graduated from Canaan High School. On May 30, 1943, he married Mary K. Skrabut in East Hartford, Connecticut. They made their home in East Hartford and Derby before moving to Barre in 1962. From 1939 to 1946, he worked at United Aircraft, Hamilton Technology Division, doing experimental testing, and in 1947 he started A&B Construction in East Hartford. In 1955 he purchased the Stott Gas Company in Newport, which he operated until 1962. After moving to Barre, he worked for the Vermont Department of Transportation as a supervisor until his retirement in 1981. He was a member of the Canadian Club of Barre and the SnoBees Snowmobile Club. An avid hunter and fisherman, he also enjoyed Harley-Davidson motorcycles and in earlier years ski-jumping in Plattsburgh, New York. Survivors include his wife, Mary Shattuck, of Barre; four daughters: Sheila Clark of Glover, Bobbi Nichols of Lake Winola, Pennsylvania, Denise Record of Troy, New Hampshire, and Earline Shattuck of Barre; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Barbara Gatchell and Dorothy Ross, both of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held in the spring in the Pilgrim Lutheran Church Cemetery in Lexington, South Carolina. There are no calling hours. Elizabeth Mary Clarke

, 93, of Newport died in Newport on Sunday, December 11, 2005. Ms. Clarke was born September 16, 1912, the only daughter of Captain Alexander and Bertha (Kirkpatrick) Clarke in Cornwall, Ontario. Her father was a longtime captain on the Anthemis, the cruise boat that ran from Newport to Magog. She was educated in a one-room schoolhouse in Georgeville, Quebec, and went on to Cornwall Colligiate and then Ottawa University. She returned to Newport in 1941 and worked in the billing department of Butterfield's on the Canadian side. She later had the position of supervisor of billing on the U.S. side for 30 years. She was a member of the United Church of Newport for over 40 years. She was a Girl Scout leader for 42 years and before that was a girl guide in the 33rd Montreal Company of Girl Guides. She was a longtime member of the Butterfield Quarter Century Club. She was an avid outdoors person who enjoyed hiking and the company of her cats. Interment will take place in the spring in Cornwall.
Carroll Dean Gardner Sr.

, 91, of Newport died in Newport on Sunday, December 11, 2005. Mr. Gardner was born August 2, 1914, on the Ways Mills Road (now Goodall Road) in Holland, a son of Claude and Helen (Hammond) Gardner. He graduated from Hanover High School in Hanover, New Hampshire, in 1933. He served in World War II in the 806th Military Police Company in Bermuda. He was honorably discharged on February 5, 1946. He married Olive Searles Rice on May 25, 1946. She predeceased him on August 30, 2001. He farmed for a while, then owned and operated his own trucking business and service station in Irasburg. He worked as a police officer for the Newport Police Department and as a deputy sheriff for the Orleans County Sheriff's Department. He also worked for the Curtis Funeral Home and the Rushford Funeral Home. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service on November 7, 1980. His last job was working as a state appraiser with Bill Fyfe. He served as a Boy Scout leader for Troop No. 3 in Newport for many years. In 1966 he accompanied his troop to the Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. He was a member of Elks Lodge No. 2155 from 1973 to 1993 and was exalted ruler from 1984 to 1985. He was a member of American Legion Newport Post No. 21, the Masonic Temple in Newport for many years, and the Irasburg and Newport fire departments. , 90, of Derby Line died peacefully December 10, 2005, in Newport. Mrs. Legacy was born June 23, 1915, in Quebec, a daughter of Myron and Emma (Wilsey) Morse. In 1946 she married Elmo Legacy, who predeceased her on December 12, 1991. She was a cook for the Eastside Restaurant in Newport and the former Kelley's Restaurant. She enjoyed knitting and making afgans for everyone. She enjoyed living at Michaud Manor. She is survived by a son, Irving Morton, and his wife, Anna, of Livingston, Texas; by a stepdaughter, IvahChaput, and her husband, Felix Sr. of Derby and their eight children; by a stepson, Walter Legacy, and his wife, Lorraine, of Florida and their six children; by two grandchildren, Scott Morton and his wife, Mary, of Huntington, Maryland, and Michael Morton and his wife, Audrey, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; by seven great-grandchildren; by 26 stepgreat-grandchildren; and by 23 stepgreat-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by brothers and sisters: Harold, Maurice, and Edwin Morse, Marcella Hornburger, Ellen McCullive, and Arlene Ingalls. Calvin Gerald McKinney

, 87, of Newport died in Newport on Saturday, December 10, 2005. Mr. McKinney was born on March 25, 1918, in Bakersfield, a son of Bernard and Florence (Heflin) McKinney. His father died when he was three years old, and his younger sister Vivian died soon thereafter that same year, leaving his mother to raise the family. He graduated in 1937 from the Newport High School, then was employed by Hood's Creamery for over five years. He was later employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier. In 1943 he went into the U.S. Army, serving in the European Theater, and was discharged in 1946 with the rank of sergeant. After his military service, he returned to the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1973. He and his wife, Isabelle Prior, who he married in November 1940, took a trip across southern Canada and the United States. They spent the next 28 winters in Arizona and summers in Vermont, then decided to return to Vermont to spend the entire year. He was a member of American Legion Newport Post No. 21. His wife died July 25, 2004. He is survived by two sons, Calvin Jr. of Holiday, Florida, and Robert of West Charleston; by several grandchildren; and by his sister Doris Hall of Newport. Graveside services will be held in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery. , 83, of Irasburg died at her home on Wednesday, December 7, 2005, with her husband and children at her side. Mrs. Royer was born in Newport March 26, 1922, a daughter of Lucius and Emma (Lantagne) Provencher. On July 22, 1940, she married Philip Royer, who survives her. They bought the family farm in the early 1940s, and she and her husband ran it together for many years, with their sons now running it. The couple ran barn dances in the early to mid 1970s, with many local bands playing there. They did a lot of traveling around the country, visiting several states to attend Farm Bureau conventions. She was a member of the Orleans Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed bowling, playing bingo, knitting, and crocheting, with the result being many gifts for family members. She also enjoyed snowmobiling for many years. She was a loving and caring grandmother who always enjoyed having the family around. She is survived by her children: Philip Royer and his wife, Doris, of Irasburg, Richard Royer and his wife, Valorie, of Irasburg, Patricia Poutre and her husband, Alfred, of Irasburg, and Denis Royer and his wife, Lori, of Irasburg; by her sister Rita Litchfield of Mesa, Arizona; by 13 grandchildren; and by 16 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother Phil Provencher. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated December 12 at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Orleans with the Reverend Daniel Rupp and the Reverend Yvon Royer officiating. Spring interment will take place at St. Ignatius Cemetery in Lowell. , 97, of Orleans died in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on Friday, December 9, 2005. Mr. Dow was born in Coventry on July 3, 1908, a son of Arthur and Iona (Healey) Dow. He worked at Ethan Allen, retiring in 1975. He was a member of Orleans Federated Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and spending time with his grandchildren. On November 26, 1929, he married Dale Ramsdell, who predeceased him in 1997. He is survived by his children Arthur Dow and his wife, Glenn, of Newport and Joyce Wahchle and her husband, Randle, of Inglewood, Florida; by his grandchildren: Nancy Bassett, Michael Dow, Lori and Dan Kelliher, Steven and Lidia Dow, Bradley Dow, Jeffrey Wahchle, Peter Wahchle, David and Dee Wahchle, Pamela and Steven Porter, and Peggy and NormandMeunier; by his daughter-in-law Brenda Dow of St. Johnsbury; by his son-in-law Raymond Gilfillan of Orleans; by his sister Leah Magill of Springfield; by 17 great-grandchildren; and by three great-great-grandchildren. , 91, died Wednesday, November 23, 2005, at her Essex Center home. Mrs. Kirkpatrick was born April 21, 1914, in Albany, a daughter of Ornan and Ethel (Day) Sheperd. She graduated from Orleans High School, where she played varsity basketball and won many typing awards. She married Raymond Kirkpatrick on August 14, 1936, in Shaftsbury. They were married for 68 years, before his death on October 24, 2004. She worked for the Ben Mont Paper Company in Bennington for 23 years. She and her husband were also successful farmers in Brownington for 13 years. While living in Brownington, she served the town as its town clerk for three years. Her favorite hobbies were knitting, sewing, gardening, and picking and eating berries. She was the family matriarch of five generations of her family and enjoyed every minute she spent with each family member. She is survived by her only child, Roberta Bruso, and her husband, Paul, of Essex Center; by three grandchildren: Dennis Bruso and his wife, Sandra, of Vergennes, DenniseBruso and her partner, Harry Lawyer, of Greenwood, Deleware, and Dustin Bruso and his wife, Dorothy, of Essex; by nine great-grandchildren: Chrystal Little and her husband, Jason, Nicole Bruso and her partner, Fred Lichtenfels, Bethany Bingham and her husband, Nathan, Alicia Bruso, Justus Keith and his wife, Anna, Jolien Haggard and her husband, David, JerelleBruso, Brandon Lawyer, and Sean Bruso; by three great-great-grandchildren: Kaitlyn and Jasmine Little and Nathan Brigham; by her caregiver, Kate Sullivan; and a special friend, Edwin Burdick, of Brownington Center. In addition to her husband, mother, and father, she was predeceased by her two brothers, Floyd and Cecil Sheperd. Funeral services were held November 28 at the Corbin and Palmer Funeral Chapel in Essex Junction. Burial followed at the Vermont Veterans Home Cemetery in Bennington. She was laid to rest in the family lot beside her husband.
