, 89, of Lancaster, N.H., died Sunday morning, Nov. 6, 2005, at Morrison Nursing Home, Whitefield. Mr. Alexander was born in North Belgrade, Maine, on Feb. 15, 1916, the son of Arthur and Amie (Thinge) Alexander. Jim was raised in Belgrade and was a graduate of Belgrade High School. In 1941, he moved to Lancaster where he managed the Connecticut River Dairy for many years. In the 1950s, he purchased the local Ford dealership, which he operated for several years. He continued a career in the automobile business and was a sales representative for dealerships in Lancaster, Lewiston, Maine, and Colebrook. He was a 50-plus-year member of the Free and Accepted Masons. Family members include two daughters, Mary McLaren and her husband Hazen of Barnet, Vt., and Marjorie Conway of Somersworth, N.H.; and three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Alice Mary (Hardy) Alexander; and a son-in-law, Tom Conway. There are no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 12, at 1 p.m., at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Lancaster. The Rev. David Rose, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Summer Street Cemetery, Lancaster.

, 73, long-term resident of Lyndon Corner, Vt., passed away Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005, near his home in Washington, N.C. Frederick was the son of Roger William and Ruth Wheeler Spaulding. Frederick is survived by his children, R.W. and fiancee Jamie, Bruce and his wife Barbara, James and his wife Cheri, Cynthia and her husband Douglas Burrington, Cathleen and her husband Eric Paris, and Cheryl and her husband Brian Bona, children of he and his first wife Sarah Monahan, who passed away in 2002; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his sister, Martha of Cherry Creek, Colo. After moving to North Carolina, he married Judith Zanfagna, formerly of Newport, Vt., and leaves behind her and her children, Lois Nelson Daniels and her husband C.J., and Sgt. Joseph Nelson and his wife Melissa; and six stepgrandchildren. Frederick was an avid bowler, hunter, enjoyed boats and water sports, and was a member of the Masons, Southern Air R/C Club of North Carolina, and a life member of the National American Hunting Club and National Rifle Association. He was a Machinist Mate, 2nd Class with the U.S. Navy. Frederick was best-known for his ability to put together or repair anything, especially related to rifles or snowmobiles. He was employed with the Vermont Tap & Die Company from 1964-94, at which time he moved to Washington, N.C., and was later employed with Greenfield Industries' North Carolina location. While living in the Lyndonville area, he became well-known as the person to go to should your rifle need repair or a tune-up, to reload casings, or diagnose why that snowmobile did not do what it was supposed to. In his earlier years, as director of VAST, Fred was very instrumental in organizing the structure of VAST throughout the region. He was also a founder and president of the Lyndon Snow Cruizers snowmobiling club. A memorial service will be held at the Tom Breslin Center, 377 Main St. (parking at Greenfield Industries), Lyndonville, Vt., on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 10 a.m.-noon, with the eulogy given by Scott Colby. Funeral services will be held at the chapel of Paul Funeral Home in Washington, N.C., Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 7 p.m. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to the 7 p.m. service. , 69, died Saturday, Nov. 5, 2005, at an area convalescent home in Windsor, Conn., after a long illness. Formerly of Manchester, Conn., he had lived in Lyndonville, Vt., since the early 1990s. He leaves his son, John Richard Cook of Manchester; his daughter, Elizabeth Ann Spear of Andover, Conn.; his granddaughters, Sarah and Taylor Spear of Andover; his devoted companion, Mollie Chamberlain of Lyndonville, Vt.; his former wife and friend, Ann Cook of Manchester; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul and Barbara Cook of South Holland, Ill., and Herbert and Carol Cook of Palm Springs, Calif. He also leaves nephews, Jeff, Scott, Glen and Chris; and many grandnephews and grandnieces. He was born in Lincoln, Neb., in 1936, son of the late Elizabeth (Asmus) and H. Paul Cook, and grew up in the town of Curtis in the Nebraska sand hills. An Eagle Scout, he graduated from the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture in 1954. A proud Corn Husker, he graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Nebraska in 1959 where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity, ROTC and the marching band. He went to work with North American Aviation of Los Angeles, Calif., and in 1962, came to Connecticut on assignment as a contract administrator for the Minuteman Fuel Cell Program at Wheeler Electronics in Waterville, Conn. There he met and married Ann Osterman of Thomaston. In 1964, he moved his family to Glastonbury and then to Manchester after being assigned to the Apollo Fuel Cell Program at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Company in East Hartford. He was always proud to have worked on the space program. In 1966, he became employed as senior contract administrator with Raymond Engineering in Middletown and remained there for the rest of his professional career. He was a member of the national Contract Administrators Association and was a former member of the Trinity Covenant Church in Manchester. An avid train enthusiast, he was a member of the TRICO Model Railroad Club in St. Johnsbury, Vt. He loved music and belonged to the St. Johnsbury and Lyndonville bands as a trumpet and tuba player. He enjoyed fishing, camping, photography, roller skating and was passionate in keeping up with his favorite football teams. His family will receive friends at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Watkins Funeral Home, 142 East Center Street, Manchester, with a memorial service to follow at 11 a.m. Burial in Nebraska will be at a later date. , 97, of Franconia, N.H., formerly of Lisbon, N.H., passed away on Nov. 2, 2005, at the Lafayette Health Center. Roy was born a son to George L. and Mary (Harriman) Curtis on July 26, 1908, in West Sumner, Maine. He attended schools in Maine. Roy married Geneva Kelsea Gilbert on Nov. 17, 1940. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army and served in World War II in North Africa as a cook. Roy and his wife lived in California for 25 years before moving back to Lisbon. He retired from the plumbing and heating industry at the age of 60. Roy enjoyed gardening and traveling. He catered many meals for the Lisbon seniors at his home as well as the Lisbon Town Hall. Three stepchildren and many nieces and nephews survive Roy. He lived with Warren and Genevieve Wetherbee in Lisbon for five years before entering the Lafayette Center. His wife, Geneva, predeceased him on April 11, 1992. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m., at the Lisbon Shared Ministry Brick Church with the Rev. Lyn O. Winter officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood Cemetery in Franconia.

, 67, of 529 Hill St., Danville, passed away Nov. 6, 2005, in Elko, Minn., with her two daughters by her side. She was born in Burlington on Nov. 21, 1937, the daughter of Maurice Sr. and Florence (Henderson) Cross. She graduated from Danville High School in 1956 and lived all her life in Danville. She was an aide in the Danville High School for years and worked at the Pope Library. Most recently she worked at the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum. Since May 2004 she had battled cancer. She is survived by two daughters, Wendi Larrabee and her husband Steven of West Danville (P.O. Box 67 05873), and Angela Diver and her husband Robert of Rosemont, Minn. (14351 Dekalb Ave. 55068); four grandchildren, Buddy and Brittney Larrabee of the Boston area, Travis and Brett Diver of Rosemont, Minn.; two brothers, Maurice Cross Jr. of Groton and Robert Cross of Barre. Memorial services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Danville Congregational Church with the pastor, the Rev. Jim Llewellyn, officiating. , 88, a Kirby native, passed away at his Lyndon residence Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2005. The son of Howard D. and Flora (Ward) Gorham, he was born Nov. 6, 1917, in Kirby, one of seven children. Aldis was a farmer, working for many of the farms through the area. He also was a lift operator at Burke Mountain for many years. He was a 1937 graduate of Lyndon Institute, and married Shirley Fisher on Nov. 11, 1944. Aldis enjoyed farming, sugaring - he really enjoyed teaching children to sugar - and antique farming equipment. He thoroughly enjoyed his travels across America with his loving wife Shirley following their retirement. Aldis was interested in people and their well-being. He met a wide variety of friends while working at Burke Mountain. His real joy in life was his family, as he cherished them from infancy to adulthood. To sum up his life, he faced it with courage and optimism and taught his family to do likewise. Aldis is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Shirley; children, Wanita Gardner and her husband Don, Fred and his wife Roxanne, all of Lyndon, Esther Mazzini and her husband Carl of Vestal, N.Y., Carolyn Guest and her husband Richard of St. Johnsbury, and Judith Doria and her husband David of Middlebury; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Louise Coe, Blanche Gorham, Dorothy Gorham, Margaret Flayhan and Helen Houston. Aldis was predeceased by an infant daughter, Jane; four brothers and two sisters, Densmore and his wife Iva, Carroll, Albert, Warren, Carolyn F. Smith, and Marjorie McFarland and her husband Hugh. The family will receive friends at visiting hours Friday evening between 6-8 p.m. at the Pearsons Funeral Home, located at 70 Church St., Lyndonville. A funeral service will be Saturday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m., at the East Burke Congregational Church. Interment will be in the North Kirby Cemetery. , 91, died Nov. 9, 2005, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center. Peg was born Jan. 16, 1914, in Norfolk, Va. She owned and operated the Diamond Hill property in Danville for over 25 years. She loved her state of Vermont. Peg has left us to be with her daughter, Patricia Toolin Harper (Kenneth), but is survived by two daughters, Shawn Toolin Gleason and her husband Richard of Clinton, Wash., and Charleen Toolin Bolt and her husband Carl of Charlotte, N.C.; six grandchildren, Marc Gleason (Gretchen), Kerry van der Veen (Ronald), both of Seattle, Wash., Darlene Jaeger (Robert) of Snohomish, Wash., Denise Olsen (Keith), Jill Dix (Scott), both of Chicago, Ill., and Amber Wagenknecht Gunby (David) of Plano, Texas; 18 great-grandchildren, including twin boys born Oct. 12. Peg marveled at the cycle of life and believed she was only slipping away into the next room until all could be together forever. A memorial service during the Toolin family reunion is planned for mid-summer.

, of Grove, Okla., passed away at 10:30 Wednesday morning, Nov. 9, 2005, at Integris Grove General Hospital, Grove, Okla., after an illness. She was 69 years old. Roberta was born Aug. 29, 1936, in St. Johnsbury, Vt., to Robert C. and Julia (Bruce) Harpin. She married Marnel Harran, Nov. 18, 1956, in Passumpsic, Vt. The couple later moved to Oklahoma to be close to family. She was an active member of the First Methodist Church, Eastern Stars and the Green Mountain Grange, all of Seminole, Okla. Roberta was an avid homemaker and enjoyed her family to the fullest. She will be greatly missed. Roberta is survived by her husband, Marnel of Grove, Okla.; two sons, Franklyn Harran and his wife Linda, and Howard Harran, all of Mary Esther, Fla.; two daughters, Marja Mayes and her husband John of Navarre, Fla., and Janel Bedor and her husband Dan of Siloam Springs, Ark.; one brother, Bruce Harpin of Passumpsic, Vt.; five grandchildren, Austin and Dylan Mayes, Sarah Harran, Curtis and Conner Bedor; and many other loving relatives and a host of friends. There will be a visitation for family and friends from 7-9 Sunday evening, Nov. 13, 2005, at the Thomas Funeral Home, Welch, Okla. Services for Roberta will be held at 10 Monday morning, Nov. 14, 2005, at the Thomas Funeral Home, Welch, Okla. Pastor David Karges will officiate. The body will be cremated and a private family burial will be held at the Passumpsic Cemetery, Passumpsic, Vt.
Rolfe Lawrence Chickering

(Lt. Col. Ret.) of Hinesburg died Friday, Nov. 11, 2005, at Fletcher Allen Health Care at the age of 87. Rolfe "Chic" was the fifth of six children of A. Carlton and Agnes E. (Dodge) Chickering and was born at home in North Danville, Vt., on Aug. 17, 1918. Rolfe's mother died in 1925 when he was 6 years old and brother Robert followed her a few months later. The family then went to live with grandmother Alice Finley Chickering, who at 70 years of age took on the care of five youngsters ranging in age from 13 to 4. Following completion of the 10 grades of school offered in North Danville, Rolfe worked at farming and lumbering until 1941 when he moved to East Hartford, Conn., to work for Pratt & Whitney. In 1942, Chic joined the Army Air Corps, became a fighter pilot serving with the 359th Fighter Squadron based at Martlesham Heath, in southeastern England, and flew 75 missions over German-occupied Europe. For this service, he was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross and an Air Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters. Upon his return to the United States, he married Grace Lucille Cahoon of Danville in Selma, Ala. on April 27, 1945. Returning to Vermont, the couple made their home in Danville and from 1945-'51 Chic was a foreman in manufacturing at Fairbanks-Morse Scale Co. in St. Johnsbury. Also in 1946, he was a charter member of the VT Air National Guard. Chic was recalled to active duty in February 1951 during the Korean War, and served as a pilot instructor at the base in Burlington. He was released from active duty in November 1952, but decided to remain full-time with the Air Guard. He then moved his family to Hinesburg, where he has lived since. He remained full-time with the VTANG until his retirement in April 1971. During those years he served as air technician, flying training instructor, operations officer, squadron commander, deputy commander of operations and of material, chief of supply, base engineering officer and base detachment commander. In retirement Chic worked for Simmons Precision in Vergennes, and IBM in Essex Junction, from which he retired in 1983. In Hinesburg he has served on the school board and the zoning board. Having advanced in the military despite his lack of formal education, Chick encouraged his children to continue on to college, and all six attended the University of Vermont. Throughout his life he was an avid hunter and fisherman, and in retirement years had an abundant vegetable garden. Until he had to give up hunting because of deteriorating eyesight, he always kept one or more beagles to run rabbits. Chic was predeceased by his parents and siblings, Carlton (1996), Kay Stepleton (2001), Robert (1925), Leo (2001), and Kenneth (1995). He leaves behind Grace, his wife of 60 years; and his six children: Sharon and her husband Peter Moller of Leadville, Colo., Lorene of South Burlington, Janet and her partner Ken Burchesky of Lyndonville, Mark and his wife Susan Osgood of Brattleboro, Mary Ellen and her husband Abubaker Sassi of Denver, Colo., and Heidi of Charlotte, N.C. Chic also leaves four granddaughters, Pilar Moller of Milwaukee, Felicia Moller and her husband David Inglis, Seah Chickering-Burchesky of Lyndonville and Hibba Sassi of Denver; two grandsons, Ameen Sassi and Caleb Van Noy (son of Heidi); as well as several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be celebrated Monday, Nov. 14, at 2 p.m. in the United Church of Hinesburg with burial to follow in Hinesburg Village Cemetery. Visiting hours are Sunday, Nov. 13, from 2-4 p.m. in the Osborne Parish Hall of the church. , 83, Lunenburg, Vt., died Thursday morning, Nov. 10, 2005, at the Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital. Mrs. Grant was born in East Hardwick, Vt., on Feb. 5, 1922, the daughter of Wilbur and Emma (Vancour) Morse. Mary attended schools in St. Johnsbury and East Concord. She worked at the former Gilman Paper Company and at the Mountain View, Whitefield. She enjoyed crafts, crocheting, cooking, baking, but most of all spending time with her family. She was a member of the Adah Chapter #39 OES and the Gilman Senior Center. Family members include two daughters, Betty Thrumston of Pinellas Park, Fla., and Georganna Dow and her husband Michael of Lunenburg; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters; brothers; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; two husbands, Francis Morgan and James Grant; a son, David; a son-in-law, David Thrumston; and three brothers. Visiting hours will be held Saturday afternoon and evening, Nov. 12, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. The Eastern Star will hold a service at 2:30 at the funeral home.
