Bruce G. McGregor

, 84, passed away Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, after a lengthy illness. Bruce was a decorated veteran of World War II who flew more than 40 combat missions in the European Theater as a B-26 pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After the war, he was a cattle broker for Swift and Co. and proprietor of his own livestock business in Lyndonville. In 1965, he was appointed postmaster in West Burke by President Johnson, and served in that position until 1987. McGregor also served as moderator for the town of Burke for 17 years. He was past president of the Lyndonville Rotary Club, and an avid bridge player and golfer. He also enjoyed woodworking, crossword puzzles and reading. The son of Louise Adele (Allen) and Edward James McGregor Jr., he was born Jan. 22, 1921, in Kansas City, Mo. Bruce is survived by his loving wife of more than 61 years, Jean L. (Barron) McGregor of West Burke; his son Brian of Putney; daughter Linda Wheeler and husband Walt of Schodack, N.Y.; son Keith of West Burke; daughter-in-law Linda Hale of St. Johnsbury; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a sister, Jean Adele Waltz of Highland, Ind. He was predeceased by a son, Doug, and a brother, Don. A memorial service will be held at the Lyndonville First Congregational Church Friday, Feb. 11 at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Joan Vincent officiating. There will be no calling hours. Interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Burke Hollow at the convenience of the family. , 84, of Lyndonville, Vt., died peacefully Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at the Pines Rehabilitation & Health Center with loving family at her side. Barbara was born June 23, 1920, in Orleans, Vt., to the late G. Reginald and Vanessa (Holton) Young. She lived most of her life in West Burke, Vt., and attended graded school there. She attended high school at Lyndon Institute. She married Bernard Francis Blake, who also grew up in West Burke, on March 17, 1939. Their three daughters were all born in West Burke and lived there until 1947 when the family moved to Tupper Lake, N.Y., where Bernard worked in the logging business. The family returned to West Burke in 1955 and remained there until retirement in 1984. Barbara was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She loved being a homemaker and only after her daughters married and left home did she take a job outside the home. She was an excellent cook, so it was only natural for her to take these skills to the workplace, which she did in the kitchen at the Darling Inn and Lyndon Institute. She was also very creative and spent many of her leisure hours doing beautiful craft work. Barbara and Bernard were members of the Yankee Waters Camping Club and they spent lots of wonderful time traveling and camping with their many friends in the club. Since their retirement they have spent winters in Zephyrhills, Fla. As much as they loved their time in Florida, they were always anxious to get back home to beautiful Vermont. They have made many wonderful friends there. Barbara is survived by Bernard, her loving husband of nearly 66 years, P.O. Box 904, Lyndonville, VT 05851; their three daughters, Lucy and husband David Gaskell of West Sand, N.Y., Ruth and husband Richard Welch of East Burke, Vt., Eleanor and husband Wayne Little of Bethlehem, N.H.; and seven grandchildren, Kevin Stevens of Philadelphia, Pa., Tamara and husband Timothy Miller of Media, Pa., Vickie and husband Joshua Johnson of Derry, N.H., Linda and husband Kevin Cornwell of Virginia Beach, Va., Jeffrey and wife Karen Gaskell of Nassau, N.Y., Richard Welch and fiancee Tammy Peloquin of Sheffield, Vt., and Gregory and wife Denise Gaskell of Meredith, N.H.; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. She is also survived by her stepmother, Geneva Young of West Burke, Vt.; her sister, Eunice Craig of Newport, Vt.; and sister-in-law, Beverly Young of Gastonia, N.C.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews; many close Blake family members; and special lifelong friends. She was predeceased by her parents as well as her brothers, Robert Young and Gerald Young; and by her sisters, Arlene Young and Vanessa Brown. A celebration of her life will be held at the Pearsons Funeral Home at a later date. Interment will be at the Hillside Cemetery in West Burke, Vt. , 42, of Belmont, N.H., formerly of Littleton, N.H., died suddenly Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at the Lakes Region Hospital, Laconia, N.H. She was born in Woodsville, N.H., the daughter of Peter and Judith (Priest) LaFoe. She grew up in the Littleton area and attended local schools. For several years she owned and operated the Orford General Store in Orford, N.H. She moved to the Belmont area in 1994 and had been employed as a deli clerk at a local delicatessen. Annette loved summertime so she could go to the beach, and she enjoyed the ocean. She was an ardent supporter of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Littleton, and attended many of their social events. In the past year she enjoyed going to visit her sister Bridget and her store in Wentworth location. Most of all, she loved spending time with her nieces, nephews, stepchildren, grandchildren and entire family. She was predeceased by her father, Peter Lafoe. She is survived by her ex-husband and friend, Scott Weeks of Gilford, N.H.; her mother, Judith Mathers of Belmont; two sisters, Tammy Arpin of Belmont, and Bridget Parent of Wentworth location; two brothers, Peter Lafoe of Berlin, and Gregory Lafoe of Bath, N.H.; two grandchildren; nieces and nephews; her loving companion, Joe Bonan of Gilford; and his two children, Stacey and Joe. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 11 a.m., at the Ross Funeral Home, Littleton Chapel. A service will follow at 12 p.m. with the Rev. Lyn McIntosh officiating. Burial will take place in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery, Woodsville.

, 78, died surrounded by her family at her home in Brownington Village, Feb. 9, 2005, after a two-year battle with breast cancer. Mrs. Hastings was born on the family farm in Edinburg, Ohio, April 9, 1926, the daughter of Clarence J. and Fern (Rogers) Walvoord. Her schooling began at the Edinburg Schools and continued at Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio, where she received her bachelor\'s degree in religious education with the Class of 1943. Beginning in 1947, she attended the Hartford (Conn.) School of Religious Education and then served as director of religious education at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Canton, Ohio. At Hartford Theological Seminary, she met a fellow student, Leroy N. Hastings, and they were married in July 1951. Together, they served as religious education director and pastor in several Vermont parishes: first in East St. Johnsbury, Concord and Waterford, and beginning in 1956, in the yoked parishes of Orleans and Brownington. Beginning in 1965, she and her husband ministered in Chester, N.J., and beginning in 1971, in Whitman, Mass. In 1970, she received a master\'s degree in library service from Rutgers University. During her 18-year career as a librarian, she worked at Brockton (Mass.) High School and at Lake Region Union High School. Aside from her professional life, she was an ardent flower gardener, weaver and homemaker in the house she designed and in which she lived the past 20 years. She served as representative on the Women\'s Fellowship of the Vermont Conference (United Church of Christ) Board of Trustees, served in various offices of the Brownington Congregational Church, and extended her interest to community concerns. She was greatly instrumental in bringing Enhanced 911 to Brownington. She is survived by her husband, the Rev. Leroy N. Hastings, a retired minister; by her three children, Mark Hastings and his wife Kim of Brownington, Sandra Bell of Orleans, and Timothy Hastings of Westmore; by her sister, Margaret Steele of Sonoma, Calif.; by her two brothers, Roger Walvoord and his wife Doris of Williston, and Wilbur Walvoord and his wife Marjorie of Sabina, Ohio; by her three grandchildren, Jacob and Mary Alison Hastings and Jamison Bell; and by her beloved aunt, Ruth Zeller of Kent, Ohio. A memorial service will be observed on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 2 p.m., following cremation, and her remains will be buried at the Brownington Village Cemetery in the spring. , of 310 Pleasant St., St. Johnsbury, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at the home he shared with his daughter Darcy. He was born in Minneapolis, Minn., Jan. 23, 1928, and spent most of his life in Minnesota. He had resided here since March 2004. Mr. LaPointe was retired from the U.S. Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service. He served in the HQ 11th Airborne Division during the occupation of Japan following World War II. He is survived by three children, Roger, Darcy and Brian; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The family is especially grateful for the hospice care extended by Caledonia Home Health. He was born in Plainfield, N.J., on June 6, 1953, a twin son of Donald A. and Laura (Kenny) Hann. He was a master electrician who worked for Royal Electric of Woodsville for the past 16 years and was previously self-employed. He served four years as a member of the Bath School Board, and also served on the Bath Volunteer Fire Department. For nine years he was a ski instructor at Cannon Mountain. He is survived by his wife, Karen S. (Andersen) Hann of Bath, who he married Oct. 1, 1978; two daughters, Morgan M. Hann of Bath, N.H. and Kelly M. Hann of Winslow, Maine; his parents, Donald and Laura Hann of Ryegate, Vt.; his twin brother, Tom A. Hann of Sandwich, Mass.; a sister, Pamela J. Owston of Manlius, N.Y.; nieces and nephews. A calling hour will be held today, Feb. 12, beginning at 2 p.m. and concluding at 3 p.m. at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch St., Woodsville, N.H. There will not be a public funeral service and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. , 58, a longtime resident of Monument Road in Swanton, Vt., died Feb. 11, 2005, at his home with his loving family by his side. "Mickey" was born in Granville, N.Y., on Jan. 31, 1947, the son of Roland "Lefty" and Elaine (Clow) Lyford and was married to Gloria (Hedges) Lyford in 1967. Michael attended school in Northfield, Vt., where he was a member of the National Honor Society, Green Mountain Boy\'s State. He was a star athlete in soccer and basketball. His high school performance distinguished him as all-time leading scorer for the Green Mountain Soccer league, and included top scorer for basketball his senior year. He continued his education receiving his bachelor\'s degree in education, holding a double major in physical education and history at Norwich University with the following collegiate achievements: Dean\'s List, National Honor Committee, outstanding athlete in soccer earning MVP, All New England, Small College All American and holder of several school records including all-time career leading scorer in soccer. He was later inducted into Norwich University\'s Soccer Hall of Fame. After graduating from Norwich University he began his teaching career in physical education and coaching in 1970 at Sacred Heart High School in Newport, Vt. His next 14 years in education and coaching were spent at Missisquoi Valley Union High School where he was loved and respected as a teacher and soccer coach earning four state high school titles and elected Twin State Coach in 1982. After leaving his career in teaching he worked several years for Central Vermont Public Service. Mick was a passionate hunter, sportsman, avid golfer and member of the Champlain Country Club, humbly holding three "hole-in-ones." Far beyond the athletic and academic achievements in his life, Mick had a wonderful gift of being able to reach his fellow man in countless ways with his love and compassion. He will always be remembered by his family, friends and community as a wonderful mentor and friend. He was a confidant, leader, counselor, colleague, and role model for his family, neighbors and students. The example he set of being a loving companion, partner, father, grandfather, brother, neighbor, coach and teacher will influence the lives he touched during his time with us. , 47, well-known businessman of Troy, died suddenly Feb. 12, 2005, in Newport. He was the beloved husband of Linda (Blais) Prue. He was born Sept. 19, 1957, in Newport, a son of Wilbrod and Cora (Nourie) Prue. Mark graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1975. On Dec. 31, 1993, he married Linda Blais. Mark worked for the former Fedele Store while he was in high school and later for Grand Union Store for 24 years before buying the Troy General Store in 1998. Mark gave generously to the area organizations such as the fire departments, church, local schools, Special Olympics, local sports teams and many other charities. He participated in the penguin plunge in both Newport and Burlington. Among his hobbies he enjoyed bowling, golfing and telling jokes. He loved his family, grandchild and his animals. Mark took great pride in his store and truly enjoyed bringing laughter into other peoples\' lives. He will be dearly missed by all. Marcus, you\'re the best. He was born Oct. 17, 1915, in Stanstead, Quebec, the son of George E. and Emily T. (Carter) Cross. George married Doris R. Meehan Oct. 10, 1934, and had 59 wonderful years at the time of her passing Aug. 28, 1993. George kept busy with his many jobs; he served on the East Haven select and zoning boards and as road commissioner. He was a forest fire warden for more than 40 years, Essex County deputy sheriff, farmer, logger and car salesman. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a great storyteller and an avid hunter and fisherman. He was happiest while working in the woods. He really loved his dogs. George is survived by four children, Carolyn Russo and her husband Francis, Gerald (Sonny) Cross, Reginald (Reggie) Cross, Sherry Cross Hoyt and Charles Hagarty; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters, Archie, Merlyn, Florence, Sylvia, Ellen, Bill, Gordon, Fred and Elwin. He was predeceased by two children, Gordon Cross and Elizabeth (Betty) Charon. , 76, of St. Johnsbury, passed away unexpectedly at her 250 Depot Hill Rd. home Sunday morning, Feb. 13, 2005. She was born in Lancaster, N.H., on Nov. 16, 1928, the child of Roy and Bertha (Placey) Harriman. She and her husband Roderick were the owner/operators of Pageau\'s Market next to the iron bridge in St. Johnsbury Center. She loved the Lord and worshipped at the South Wheelock Baptist Church. Her biggest gift was her optimistic, positive outlook and her ability to share her faith with others. She was part of the St. Johnsbury Center Community Club. Before coming to St. Johnsbury, the Pageaus were residents of Littleton, N.H., having had a farm on Walker Hill and a home on Bishop Street. She is survived by her husband, Roderick; two children, Linda Brousseau and her husband Tim of Lebanon, N.H., and James Pageau and his wife Cherish of Kansas City, Mo.; and a sister-in-law, Marion Harriman of Littleton, N.H. She was predeceased by son, Scott; and by a brother, Francis Harriman. died peacefully early Tuesday morning, Feb. 15, 2005, at her home in Lyndonville, Vt., with her family at her side, at the age of 63. She was born Jan. 19, 1942, in Portsmouth, N.H., a daughter of the late Leo J. and Virginia C. (Botham) Locklin. She attended St. Johnsbury Academy and finished her schooling in Holyoke, Mass. She later married Paul A. Petty Sr. He predeceased her in 1978. In the mid-1980s Elaine moved back to Vermont. In 1996 her family opened the PettyCo Jct. Country Store in St. Johnsbury. She worked there for many years and enjoyed meeting and helping people and working with her family. Elaine was a member of the Women of the Moose Club Chapter 1021 of St. Johnsbury, and the MacLachlan Society of Scotland. She enjoyed bingo, picking wild flowers during the summer months, and being friendly and helpful to all people, as well as spending time with her family. Survivors include her best friend and companion of 26 years, James Buck of Lyndonville; six children, Paul A. Petty Jr. and his wife Susan of Milton, Vt., Pamela J. Petty and her husband James Rust and their children Mariah and Jimmy Rust of 12 Vt. She was born in St. Johnsbury, Vt., on Jan. 19, 1904, a daughter of the late Alfred and Cordelia (Dutil) Brunelle. Ms. Moore attended school in St. Johnsbury, Vt., and was a communicant of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Augusta, Maine. She had been employed by Edwards Manufacturing for 24 years, retiring in 1967. Ms. Moore was a member of the St. Agnes Circle Daughters of Isabella. She was predeceased by a daughter, Sylvia LaPerriere; a son, Roger Moore Jr.; and a brother, Ryno Brunelle. Ms. Moore is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Green of East Providence, R.I., and Claire LaPerriere of North Port, Fla.; two sons, Richard Moore of Sarasota, Fla., and Robert Moore Sr. of Augusta, Maine; a brother, Frank Brunelle of Vermont; also 25 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. Visiting hours are Monday, Feb. 21, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Augusta, Maine. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Western Avenue, Augusta, Maine. Burial will be in St. Mary\'s Cemetery, Manchester, in the spring.
