, 48, a Lyndonville resident, passed away Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at his father's home in Lyndonville following a lengthy illness. Born July 13, 1956, in Newport, Vt., he was the son of Alton G. and Virginia F. (Musgrove) Gray. Michael served 41/2 years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was a carpenter for 26 years and owner/operator of Mike's Carpentry, working throughout Vermont. He was married to Dianne M. (Miles) Gray for 26 years. She predeceased him June 27, 2003. He was also predeceased by his mother, Virginia, on Feb. 4, 2000. Michael is survived by his father, Alton G. Gray; daughter Cleo and husband Ramon and her children Mickey and Brianna; a son, Alton, and his children Damion and Dianne; and sisters, Sherry and husband Gary, and Debbie and husband Chris. Alberta "Bertha" M. Fillion

, 85, of Farr Hill Road, Littleton, N.H., passed away Jan. 19, 2005, at Littleton Regional Hospital. Bertha was a daughter born to George and Alma (Heon) Pepin on Sept. 25, 1919, in St. Johnsbury, Vt.; she was one of 12 children. She attended schools in St. Johnsbury before going to work as a seamstress. On June 10, 1946, she married Edward J. Fillion and moved to Littleton, N.H. Together they raised four sons. She was a devoted mother and homemaker. Bertha enjoyed bowling with the women's league at Meadow Lanes, and proudly displayed the many trophies she won. She will be remembered for her quick smile and laughter. A communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church, Bertha was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Bellefleur No. 1208. She was also a member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary Post 1816. She is survived by her children James, John and Peter of Littleton, N.H., and Paul of Eagle, Colo. She is also survived by one brother, Maurice Pepin of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; two sisters, Sr. Juliette Pepin of Winooski, Vt., and Germain Morron of Breckenridge, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Bertha was predeceased by her husband, Ed, on Jan. 5, 2005. The family will receive friends at the Pillsbury Funeral Home, 101 Union Street, Littleton, on Friday evening, Jan. 21, 2005, from 6:30-8 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday morning, Jan. 22, at 10 a.m., at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church with the Rev. Daniel J. Sinibaldi of Woodsville as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Rose Cemetery. , 95, formerly of Bethlehem, N.H., passed away at the Morrison Nursing Home in Whitefield, N.H. on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005. Marjorie was born a daughter to Levi and Alvena (Deparo) LaPete, on Jan. 10, 1910 in Barton, Vt. She attended schools and was raised in the Barton/Greensboro, Vt. area. Marjorie was married to William A. Stone in the mid-1920s and they moved to Bethlehem in 1935. She was an active homemaker and devoted mother. Marjorie enjoyed handicraft work, gardening, camping and most outdoor activities. She was a communicant of the Christ the King Church in Bethlehem for many years. Surviving family members include three sons, Donald Stone, Wayne Stone and Richard Stone, all of Bethlehem, N.H.; five daughters, Irene Ellis, Priscilla Locke of Easton, N.H., Shirley Whitcomb of Dalton, N.H., Diane Whitcomb of Bethlehem, N.H. and Elizabeth Hubbard of Littleton, N.H; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Her husband, two sons, three brothers, and two sisters predeceased her. SERVICES - The family will receive friends on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 23 from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pillsbury Funeral Home, 101 Union St., Littleton. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, Jan. 24, at 10 a.m. at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Daniel J. Sinibaldi as celebrant. , 50, a loved and respected Newark resident, passed away Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005 at home. Born Nov. 25, 1954 in Harrisburg, Pa. the daughter of Robert and Anna (Hursch) Weirich, Evanne was an elementary school teacher at the Newark Street School for many years. She was a graduate of Bethany College in West Virginia and St. Michael's College in Colchester, Vt. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Etters, Pa. Evanne was the founder of the world famous Newark Balkan Chorus, beginning in 1994. The choir has performed throughout the United States including Carnegie Hall, Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion" radio show and in the movie "In the Bedroom." She was an avid knitter, knitting gifts each year for her students and choral members. She had a special place in her heart for bunny rabbits especially those with handicaps. Evanne had an amazing sense of humor and was a great prankster. Evanne is survived by her mother, Anna, of Harrisburg, Pa.; a companion, Octavian Godeanu of West Lebanon, N.H.; two brothers, Douglas and wife Lissy of Carlisle, Pa. and Neal of Harrisburg, Pa. Friends are encouraged to attend one of the memorial concerts to be held Saturday, Jan. 22 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 23 at 2 p.m. at the St. Johnsbury School auditorium, in honor of Evanne. A small funeral service for family, close friends and the community of Newark will be held Monday, Jan. 24 at 1 p.m. at the Newark Church. Interment will be this May at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Newark.

, FCSCJ (S. Wilfrid-Marie), a Daughter of the Charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, passed away Jan. 22, 2005, at Mount Sacred Heart Provincial House and Infirmary in Littleton, N.H. Anita Bonin was born in Massawippi, QC, on April 10, 1927. She was the daughter of Wilfrid Bonin and Rose Dauphin. Anita Bonin professed her vows with her religious congregation on July 26, 1949. During her 56 years of religious life, Sister Anita served in various missions in Newport, Vt.; Colebrook, N.H.; Augusta, Maine; and Littleton, N.H. From 1965-1986, Sister Anita managed the former Sacred Heart High School kitchen in Newport, Vt. From 1986-1997, she managed the kitchen at the Provincial House and Retirement Home of the United States Province of the Daughters of the Charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. At that time Sister Anita shifted into more full-time sewing services within the community, until her illness prevented her from working in recent months. Sister Anita was exemplary in her graciousness and patience with anyone she encountered. Her best recognized gift was cooking for retreat houses, schools and convents, but she was also a very gifted seamstress. She loved meeting everyone's needs in the area of nutrition. Her high standards as a cook and kitchen manager made for a very smooth operation whether she cooked for large events or the ordinary daily fare. Sister's greatest pastime was to visit with members of her family and other sisters from her community. She was fond of jigsaw puzzles and enticed many to sit with her on even challenging 3-D projects. She treasured her experiences in her various missions and readily shared her stories. Sister Anita was predeceased by her parents. Besides her sisters in the religious community, she is survived by two sisters, Simone Tardif and Leontine Girard; nine brothers, Laureat, Jean-Claude, Leo-Pold, Joseph, Yves, Gerard, Romeo, Antonio and Armand; as well as many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be at Mount Sacred Heart, 226 Grove Street, on Saturday, Jan. 22, at 2 p.m., followed by a Memorial Mass at 4:30 p.m. Visiting hours are also at Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, Darling Hill Road (formerly Sias Ave.) in Newport, Vt., on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2-7 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Monday, Jan. 24, at 11 a.m. Spring interment will take place in St. Mary Cemetery.

, of Wheelock, died Sunday evening, Jan. 23, 2005, at her brother Gayland Berry's home in Sheffield, at the age of 78. She was born Nov. 23, 1926, in Sutton, a daughter of the late George L. and Naomi (Gilman) Berry Sr. On Aug. 27, 1952, Verna married Ronald C. Snelling. They lived in the Newburgh, N.Y., area until 1968 when they moved to Wheelock. Verna worked at the Greer School and later the McQuade School while in New York as a house mother and foster parent for many years. After returning to Vermont, she worked for Lyndon State College in the housekeeping department, retiring in 1989. She was a member of the Wheelock Community Club, the Chat-A-Lot Christmas Club, and worked on many Sheffield Church suppers throughout the years. She enjoyed making crafts, knitting, embroidery, crocheting and artex painting. Survivors include four brothers, Gayland Berry and his wife Nancy of Sheffield, Graydon Berry of Sheffield, Gale Berry and his wife Lorraine of Sutton, and Gilbert Berry and his wife Francis of Sutton; a sister, Muriel Wooden and her husband Lee of Red Hook, N.Y.; many foster children she and Ronald helped raise while in New York; many nieces and nephews; and an abundance of close friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Ronald C. Snelling, in 1997; three brothers, George Berry Jr., Gordon Berry and Gardner Berry; and a sister, Hazel Hirsch. Graveside services will be held Saturday, May 14, at 2 p.m., at William-Dexter Cemetery in Sheffield, with close family friend the Rev. Ted Ruggles officiating. There will be no calling hours. , 77, of 3 Starr King Park, Lancaster, N.H., died peacefully at home on Jan. 20, 2005. Mrs. Colby was born in Lancaster, on Oct. 10, 1927, to Leon E. and Hazel (Brown) Smith. She was the 11th child in a family of 13 children. Raised in Lancaster, she graduated from the Lancaster Academy, Class of 1945. She worked at the Gilman Paper Company, then worked for many years at the Morse Lodge on Portland Street, Lancaster. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 3041. She volunteered for the SHARE program and many hours on the Toys for Tots program. Betty loved doing for others. She got great pleasure out of caring for her great-grandchildren, Megan, Brooke and Joshua Caron. Betty will be greatly missed for all her special goodies that she cooked for special occasions, whether it would be for hunting camp, local functions or for the holidays. She was predeceased by her husband, Bernard C. Colby, in 1996; six brothers; and two sisters. Family members include a daughter, Melanie Colby of Woodsville; two grandsons, Shawn Caron of Tannersville, Pa., and Gregory Caron of West Palm Beach, Fla.; four stepchildren, Bernard C. Colby Jr. and Camilla Bourbeau both of Massachusetts, Judy Colby of New Mexico, Diane Smith of Missouri, and their families; three sisters, Hilda Kenison of Jefferson, Hazella Collins of Lancaster, and Lida Griffin of Sunapee; a brother, Merlin Smith of Stoughton, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews. William was born a son to William T. and Althea (Aldrich) Wright on Sept. 9, 1954, in Littleton, N.H. William was employed by Lisbon Shoe Company in his younger years, followed by 17 years of employment at NE Electric Wire in Lisbon. He was also employed by Wal-Mart and Staples in Littleton, and most recently as a self-employed computer technician. William is survived by his wife, Adelle "Addy" (Silva) Wright of Whitefield, N.H.; one daughter, Amanda M. Wright of Waterford, Vt.; his mother, Althea H. Wright of Lisbon, N.H.; one sister, Cheryl Blay of Lisbon, N.H.; one stepson, Steve Cook of San Marcos, Calif.; one stepdaughter, Diane Wagenman of Gerber, Calif.; one grandson, William Thomas Wright VIII of Lunenburg, Vt.; one granddaughter, Miranda Wright of Littleton, N.H.; five stepgrandchildren, Courtney Gates of Gerber, Calif., Darrell Wagenman of Gerber, Calif., Krystina, Danielle and Kaitlyn Blackwell of Temecula, Calif.; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. , of St. Johnsbury, died early Thursday morning, Jan. 27, 2005, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury, at the age of 71. She was born Feb. 3, 1933, in Eastman, Quebec, a daughter of the late Walter and Belona (Leblanc) Laramee. In 1941 her family moved to North Troy, Vt. On May 17, 1952, Sally married Raymond L. Cloutier. They moved to St. Johnsbury and raised their family. For 24 years she and Raymond owned and operated the Farm Boy Restaurant on Memorial Drive, retiring in 1994. While there she enjoyed meeting people and making new friendships. Sally enjoyed square dancing, playing golf, working in her beautiful flower gardens, and in her later years, wintering in Florida. But her most enjoyable times came from her family, which was her pride and joy. Survivors include her husband of nearly 53 years, Raymond L. Cloutier of 15 Kumpf Circle, St. Johnsbury, VT 05819; five children and their families, David and his wife Kathy Cloutier and sons Jared and Nate of St. Johnsbury, Gary Cloutier and his children Jason and Nichole of St. Johnsbury, Diane Pierce and her husband Eric and children Darren and Erika of St. Johnsbury, Chris and his wife Kim Cloutier and sons Dillon and Carson of Lyndon, and John and his wife Nichole and children Kirsten and Cameron of Beatrice, Neb.; two great-grandchildren, Domonic and Gabriel; four sisters, Emma Morin and her husband Marcel of Edgewater, Fla., Fern Adams of Bristol, Conn., Colette Lewis of Craftsbury, Vt., and Yolande Talvolozzi of Southington, Conn.; two sisters-in-law, Pauline Fairbrother of Orleans, Vt., and Yvette and her husband Bob Carver of Wildwood, Fla.; three brothers-in-law, Joseph Bernal of Newport, Vt., Norman and his wife Rita Cloutier of Ladylake, Fla., and Richard and his wife Pat Cloutier of Cortland, N.Y.; and many nieces, nephews and close friends in Vermont and Florida. , 92, of Greensboro, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at the Greensboro Nursing Home. She was born June 21, 1912, in Greensboro, the daughter of the late James and Iris (Bassett) Collier. She attended Greensboro public schools and graduated from the Littleton, New Hampshire High School, Class of 1931. In 1933 she graduated from business college in Northampton, Mass. In her earlier years, Cleora was a telephone operator for the Bell Telephone Co. with their Greensboro exchange, a position which she held for many years. From 1948 until 1969 she was a postal clerk with the Greensboro post office. She was a bookkeeper for the Greensboro Hospital, and from 1971 until 1984 she was the Greensboro Town Clerk. She was a member of the Greensboro United Church of Christ. She served on the church Diaconate and executive boards, as well as church treasurer. Cleora was also a member of the following boards and organizations: Town Auditor, Greensboro Cemetery Association, Greensboro Planning Commission, Greensboro Fire District and Greensboro Association. She enjoyed reading, gardening, her German shepherd dogs, and her cat, Joe Pete. Survivors include several nieces, nephews and cousins. To honor her request, there will be no funeral services. Madeline Hadash

, 93, of East Craftsbury, died at Craftsbury Community Care Center, Jan. 28, 2005, where she had lived for the past six years. Mrs. Hadash was born Dec. 19, 1911, in Aylmer, Quebec, a daughter of William and Mabel (Cross) Stewart. On Aug. 2, 1950, she married Eli Hadash, who predeceased her in 1984. Mrs. Hadash made history by becoming the first female clerk in the Canadian government. During World War II she decoded secret documents. When she was young, she was a bookkeeper for a golf club near Ottawa, Ontario. She and her husband ran a grocery store in Amherstburg, Ontario. She is survived by her son, the Rev. Brendan Hadash of West Glover, Vt., and his spouse Alan Hultquist. Funeral services will be held in Windsor, Ontario, where she will be buried. , 86, of 210 Cabot St., Portsmouth, N.H., died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital. She was born in Littleton, N.H., on March 3, 1918, the daughter of the late Freeman J. Priest and Lois (Sunbury) Priest Choquette. Mrs. Eastman graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy in St. Johnsbury, Vt., Class of 1935, and the Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School in Providence, R.I., Class of 1937. On May 15, 1942, she married Sidney T. Eastman. She was employed for the Vermont State Employment Service in St. Johnsbury from 1937-1938; Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in St. Johnsbury, Portsmouth, N.H., and Dover, N.H., from 1938-1978, retiring as office manager from the Dover District office. Mrs. Eastman was then employed for Sentry Systems, Inc., in Portsmouth, N.H., where she worked from 1978-2000. Mrs. Eastman was predeceased by her husband on Dec. 15, 1979. Survivors include her dear friends, Claire Thomas of Portsmouth, Armond and Virginia Legare of Stratham, and Oletha Barton of Portsmouth; and many other friends old and new. Funeral services will be held at the J. Richard "Ralph" Whitcher Sr.

, 91, of Woodsville, N.H., died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at the Lafayette Center, Franconia, N.H., after a brief illness. He was born in Newbury, Vt., May 14, 1913, the son of James Roger and Gertrude Louise (Leete) Whitcher. For many years he worked as a granite cutter at C.R. Davidson in South Ryegate and was a security guard at Lyndon State College in the early 1970s. Ralph also drove school bus for Beckley Transportation of South Ryegate and was a deputy sheriff for Caledonia County for many years. He attended the South Ryegate, Vt., Presbyterian Church, and was a member of Pulaski Lodge 58 F & AM of Wells River, Vt. As an auctioneer, he was known as the "Yankee Auctioneer." He married Thelma Verge on Jan. 29, 1932, and she predeceased him on Jan. 16, 2001. He was also predeceased by one son, Robert Whitcher; one sister, Mary Whitcher, and three brothers, John Crawford, Russell and Frank Whitcher. Surviving relatives include one daughter, Thelma W. Locke of Lisbon, N.H.; one son, Richard R. Whitcher Jr. of San Antonio, Texas; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one brother, William Whitcher of Jacksonville, Fla.; one sister, Ruth Hayward of South Royalton, Vt.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A calling hour will begin at 7 p.m. and conclude at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 1, at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, N.H. The funeral service will be Wednesday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m., in the funeral home, with the Rev. Catherine Cook officiating. Spring burial in Pine Grove Cemetery, Woodsville, will be on April 30, 2005, at 10 a.m. It is requested by the family that memorials be made to the Horse Meadow Senior Center, 91 Horse Meadow Road, North Haverhill, NH 03774.
