, 66, of St. Johnsbury, died at home Friday night, Jan. 14, 2005. He was born in Twin Mountain, N.H., July 3, 1938, the son of Everett and Edith (Serge) Bailey. Survivors include a stepson, Patrick Learmouth of St. Johnsbury; two sisters, Beverly Serge of Sheffield and Barbara Gilley of Whitefield, N.H. He was predeceased by his good friend and companion, Juanita Bunnell, on April 9, 2002. The determination and courage that Fred brought to a life of disability will be long remembered by the St. Johnsbury community at large. Funeral services will be held at Sayles Funeral Home, Thursday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Patrick Forman officiating. Friends are invited to meet the family one hour prior to the service. , 97, of Woodsville, N.H., died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at the Grafton County Nursing Home, North Haverhill, N.H., following a brief illness. She was born on Briar Hill Road in North Haverhill, May 30, 1907, daughter of Arthur and Belle (Rinehart) Kimball, and was one of a set of premature twins. She lived most of her life in Woodsville and was married to the late Alphonse Bertrand for 39 years. He predeceased her in March of 1971. Marie was a member of the Mary Glidden Lodge of Rebekkah's, Woodsville United Methodist Church and Girls Club for many years. Her interests included homemaking, playing cards, crocheting, playing the organ and piano. She is survived by one son, Gordon Bertrand and his wife Elizabeth of Brookfield, Mass.; one daughter, Joyce Sarkady of Annapolis, Md.; a granddaughter, Lynne Anderson and her family of Fredericksburg, Va.; a grandson, Kenneth Sarkady and his family of Annapolis, Md.; four great-grandchildren; and several cousins. A calling hour will be held Wednesday, Jan. 19, from 3-4 p.m., in the Ricker Funeral Home, Birch Street, Woodsville, N.H. Funeral services will follow at 4 p.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Vadia Boudreau of the Woodsville United Church officiating. Burial will be in the Horsemeadow Cemetery when the cemetery reopens in the spring. Wayne Russell Blodgett

, 77, of Colonial Court, Littleton, N.H., passed into eternal life on Jan. 15, 2005, at the Littleton Regional Hospital. Wayne was one of seven children born to Howard and Gladys (Rollins) Blodgett on June 24, 1927, in Franconia, N.H. He was a graduate of Dow Academy in Franconia. As a young man he worked in the field of carpentry with his father, Howard. Wayne served with the U.S. Army as an Honor Guard at the Nuremberg Trials in Germany following World War II. He was a former member of the Littleton VFW Howard Shawney Post 816. He was an avid skier, and as a young man worked as a ski instructor at Cannon Mountain under Paul Valar. He was an outdoor enthusiast, enjoying hunting, fishing, camping and hiking in the White Mountains. He was employed as a compositor with the Littleton Courier until his retirement in 1990. Mr. Blodgett was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for nine years. Wayne is survived by his wife of 57 years, Doris (Choate) Blodgett, of Littleton; four sons, Jeffrey and his wife Sandra of Meriden, Conn., Jonathan and his wife Melinda of Lebanon, Mark and his wife Penelope of Littleton, and Daniel and his wife Nikki of Concord; four brothers, Raymond and his wife Priscilla of Rochester, Robert and his wife Frankie, William and his wife Marge both of Landaff, N.H., and John and his wife Mary of West Burke, Vt.; two sisters, Jane Buchanan and her husband Murdoch of Gray, Maine, and Janice Drew and her husband Richard of Hamilton, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening, Jan. 18, from 6-8 p.m., at the Pillsbury Funeral Home, 101 Union Street, Littleton. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 19, at the All Saints Episcopal Church in Littleton at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Barbara Thrall officiating. A gathering will be held in the church hall immediately following the service. James "Jim" W. Emery

, 85, of Lyndonville, died early Saturday morning, Jan. 15, 2005, at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center. He was born in Westford, Vt., Feb. 1, 1919, the son of William and Eunice (Stearns) Emery. A proud veteran of World War II, he served his country in the Medical Corps, serving on hospital ships. Jim was a 1937 graduate of Lyndon Institute, later spending over 33 years working for the Vermont Department of Agriculture, the last 10 years of which he was the director of the Dairy Division. He was a former director of the Lyndon Outing Club, enjoyed high school track and field events, football and little league. He also served as a football referee. Other interests included gardening and going with the "boys" to deer camp in Avery's Gore. On Oct. 9, 1940, he married Pauline "Polly" (Colby) Emery, who survives him in Lyndonville. Other survivors include a son and his wife, Dana and Patricia (Bona) Emery of Lyndonville and daughter Pamela Emery Hart and companion Robert Carrier of Huntington, Vt.; four grandchildren, Michael and his wife Gwen Hart of Milton, Kimberly Johnson of Milton, Danica and her husband Sean Rolfe of Lyndonville, Seth Emery and companion Miss Dana Gilman of Lyndonville; a special sister, Thelma Chase Cass of California; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Perkins Emery; and a sister, Pauline Emery Armstrong. Services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. , 73, of West Burke, passed away peacefully Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital after a brief illness. Mrs. Roberts was born June 9, 1931, in Brownington, Vt., the daughter of Hormidoes and Alice (LaPlant) Lussier. She was a survivor of the polio epidemic and set an example of determination and independence for all who knew her. Family members include four children, Nancy Croteau and her husband Albert of Lyndon Center, Timothy Roberts of Starksboro, Vt., Anne Clark and her husband Kevin of Littleton, N.H., and Amy Bora and her husband Wyatt of Hampton, Va., as well as foster daughter/cousin, Pauline Doyon of Venice, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Celina Croteau of Chugiak, Alaska, Ethan Croteau of Woburn, Mass., Bethany Murtiff of Lyola University, New Orleans, Benjamin Murtiff of Littleton, N.H., Ernest Wells of Sutton, Vt., Mathew Wells of Sutton, Collette Isaac and Julia Bora of Hampton, Va.; nieces, nephews, cousins; and a close friend, Ellie Russell; along with many other supporters. She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest V. Roberts, in 1979; and by a son, James A. Roberts, in 1973. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Jan. 19, at 11 a.m., at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Lyndonville, Vt., with the Rev. Steve Nichols, celebrant. Spring interment will be at the St. Elizabeth Cemetery. , 84, died in the Villages Regional Hospital on Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, following a brief illness. She moved to The Villages three years ago from Sebastian, Fla. Born in Fairfax, Vt., she was the daughter of the late Charles and Margaret (Lucia) Cross. She was employed at IBM when they were first established in Vermont in the early 1950s. In 1955 she moved to Essex Junction from Jeffersonville where she resided until 1973. Harriet's family and their activities were the main focus of her life. She was a devout Roman Catholic and a faithful member of Holy Family Church and more recently, St. Lawrence Church. She is survived by her two sons and their spouses, Dale and Linda Sweet of The Villages, Fla., and Dennis and Brenda Sweet of Lyndon Center, Vt.; her daughter, Scharle Triolo of Palm Bay, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and stepgrandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Rita Raymond of Jeffersonville, Vt. She was predeceased by Harold Kenneth Sweet, the father of their children, in 1981; her second husband, Robert Brenna; and her sister, Helen Cross of Jeffersonville. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday, Jan. 20, at 10:30 a.m., in St. Lawrence Church, West Street, Essex Junction. Burial will be in Mountainview Cemetery in the spring. passed away Monday morning, Jan. 17, 2005, at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehab Center. She was a longtime resident of 41 Lincoln St. in St. Johnsbury. She is survived by her husband, Doug (41 Lincoln St. 05819); two sons, George and his wife Ruth (Porter) Conly of Cape Elizabeth Maine (31 Manter St. 04107), and Douglas and his wife Patricia (Houghton) Conly of Lyndonville (3 Skyview Dr. 05851); four grandchildren, Christopher Conly of Boston Mass., Kara Conly of South Portland Maine, Melissa Conly of Burlington, and Patrick Conly of Lyndonville; one surviving sister, Jeannette Veilleux Sumner of Burlington; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Frederick Veilleux, Arsene "Mickey" Veilleux, and Albert Veilleux; and five sisters, Irene Pollock-Hudson, Fabiola Roy, Angelina Martin, Yvonne Gagne, and by an infant sister Doris. Loretta's father, George Edgar Veilleux, came from Ste. Marguerite, Quebec. He later met and married Cordelia Corriveau in St. Johnsbury and began to raise their family on Pearl Street here in St. Johnsbury. Loretta was always proud of her French Canadian background and could be heard conversing in French to many friends and family. She attended graded school at Mt. St. Joseph Catholic School for girls and graduated from St. Johnsbury Academy with the Class of 1936. On Oct. 24, 1942, she married Douglas Conly of St. Johnsbury at Notre Dame des Victories Church. The Rev. Armand Fortin married them. They relocated to Brunswick, Maine, on account of Doug's job at the Navy shipyard. In December of that year, Doug volunteered to join our armed forces and Loretta returned to St. Johnsbury to live with her parents. Following Doug's discharge from the army, the couple purchased their first home in East St. Johnsbury. In 1953 they moved to Railroad Street and purchased their current home on Lincoln Street in 1954. Loretta's first job out of school was with McLellans department store in St. Johnsbury. Upon her return to St. Johnsbury, she was employed by St. Johnsbury Trucking as a payroll clerk. Later in life she was employed at Traynor's Tax Service, the Henault Press, and the medical practice of Dr. James Russell. Her faith in God was always an important aspect of her life. She was a member of Notre Dame parish for many years and was deeply saddened when it was destroyed by fire. She later was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church parish and a member of The Altar Society. Loretta was an avid sewer, knitter, and for a period of time enjoyed ceramic classes. She also spent considerable time during the summer months tending to her flower gardens. During her relaxation time, she could be found in her favorite chair knitting or watching television with her beloved cat on her lap. She was also a very active volunteer after retirement, assisting the Lifeline, Red Cross blood drives, and numerous church activities. Living with a husband and two sons, she enjoyed watching sports on television and attended her son's baseball, basketball and football games. She was a fan of the Boston Red Sox. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, Jan. 20, at 11 a.m., at St. John the Evangelist Church. Burial will be in May at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Henry "Bill" Willard Bradley Jr.

, 86, of Huntington, N.Y., and West Barnet, Vt., and formerly of Groton, Conn., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005. Bill was born Jan. 8, 1919, in Boston, Mass., son of Henry W. Bradley Sr. and his wife Emma (O'Neil). Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Marion (Roy). He is survived by his loving family and friends. He is also survived by wife of six years, Shirley; his brother, Neil H. Bradley Sr. of East Peacham, Vt.; four children, Karen J. Hartung and her husband Neil of Waterford, Conn., Henry "Bill" W. Bradley III and his wife Vicki of Stamford, Conn., Judith A Odell of Groton, Conn., and Robert J. Bradley and his wife Doris of Arlington, Texas; a stepdaughter, Adrienne Thompson of Huntington, N.Y.; a stepson, Paul Workman of New York; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren. After graduation in 1937 from Peacham Academy in Vermont, Bill joined the U.S. Navy in 1938 and served on the Battleship Texas as a signalman. He left the Texas in the spring of 1941 and transferred to the submarine service prior to World War II. Bill served on several submarines during the war, most notably the Redfish, patrolling in the Pacific off the coast of Japan. After the war, he remained in the Navy and continued to serve on submarines, advancing in rank to chief quarter master until he retired in 1959. He was honored to be a member of the Submarine Veterans of World War II. After the Navy, Bill worked for Bethlehem Steel in Quincy, Mass. He joined General Dynamics Electric Boat Division in 1962 in the Quality group and was an active member serving on the board of the local chapter of the American Society for Quality Control (ASQC). Bill retired from Electric Boat in 1979 and continued to remain active doing what he enjoyed, such as traveling and making frequent trips to his home in Vermont. Bill was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Groton, Conn. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Bill will be remembered for his gentle kindness, his genuine warmth, and his honesty and integrity, strength of character, humor and intellectual understanding. A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 23, at 3 p.m., at the North Shore Presbyterian Church in Great Neck, N.Y., where Bill and Shirley were members. Committal is planned in May in Danville, Vt. , 76, of Lyndon, Vt., died suddenly Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. He was born June 12, 1928, in Rumford, Maine, son of the late Walter and Lillian (Durland) McPherson. After his schooling, Jerry served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On April 1, 1950, he married Virginia Lyons. They lived in Rumford, Maine, until Jerry retired after 40 years as a bulldozer operator with the Boise Cascade company in 1986. He and his wife then moved to Vermont. Jerry was an extremely devoted family man with a quick wit and was considered dependable to a fault. Memberships included the American Legion Post 24 and the VFW Post 1641, both of Rumford; and the Moose Lodge 1779 of St. Johnsbury, Vt. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Virginia L. McPherson of Lyndon, Vt.; three sons, Wayne S. McPherson and his wife Mary of Rumford, Maine, Michael E. McPherson of Rumford, and Joseph P. McPherson and his wife Paula of Farmington, Maine; two daughters, Bonnie L. LaBelle and her husband O'Neil of Sabattus, Maine, and Tina M. McPherson of Dixfield, Maine; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Thursday, Jan. 20, at 3 p.m., at the Guibord Funeral Home with Mr. John Sleeper officiating. Friends may meet with the family beginning at 2 p.m. (one hour prior to the service). Spring burial will be in the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta, Maine. Gertrude Giguere

, 94, of Manchester, N.H., died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005, after a lengthy illness. Born on Oct. 24, 1910, in St. Victor, Quebec, she was the daughter of Joseph and Emma (Grondin) Shink. Mrs. Giguere was formerly a resident of Beecher Falls, Vt., until moving to Manchester in 1973. She worked as a sander for Ethan Allen furniture for many years Mrs. Giguere was predeceased by her husband, Emile Giguere, who died in 1970. Family members include a daughter, Jocelyne Charest of Manchester. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Daniel Charest of Hooksett, N.H., and Michael Charest of Manchester; two great-grandchildren, Kyle and Dalton Charest of Hooksett. There are no calling hours. A memorial Mass will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Church, South Main Street, Manchester, Friday, Jan. 21, at 10 a.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

, 97, formerly of Littleton, N.H., passed away Jan. 18, 2005, at the Harborside Healthcare Crestwood Nursing Home in Milford, N.H. Alice was born on the family homestead in Mansonville, Quebec, on Oct. 21, 1907, a daughter to Benjamin Wright and Ruth Ann (Clark) Magoon. Alice moved to Richford, Vt., from Mansonville when she was 11 years old. She was very proud when she became a naturalized citizen of the United States. Alice's elementary and middle school educations were in one-room schoolhouses. Her oldest sister, Esther, was her teacher at one point. Alice graduated from Richford, Vt., High School in 1926. She continued her education and graduated with a Teacher's Training Certificate from the University of Vermont in 1930. Alice's first teaching assignment was in a one-room schoolhouse near Richford, Vt. Her teaching career went on to span 30 years. In that time she taught in Berlin, Gorham, Campton and Rollinsford, N.H. During World War II Alice helped out in the war effort by working in a munitions factory near one of her sisters in Bridgeport, Conn. There, she met and fell in love with Edward William Lambert from Berlin, N.H. They were married in 1945. Alice especially enjoyed the years she lived in Littleton, N.H. She was often seen walking about town from the Lane House Apartments where she lived. She faithfully attended the United Methodist Church of Littleton. There she especially enjoyed the choir and thoroughly enjoyed the annual corn chowder luncheons. Alice regularly volunteered for RSVP and participated in daily activities at the Littleton Area Senior Center. She spoke frequently of all her dear Littleton friends. Alice is survived by her daughter, Marlene "Marty" Lambert Guild and her son-in-law Christopher Baldwin Guild of Merrimack, N.H.; and her two grandchildren, Jennifer Christine Guild of New York City, and Edward Baldwin Guild of Somerville, Mass. Additionally, many nieces and nephews survive her. Alice was predeceased by her infant son, John Edward Lambert, in 1950; and her husband, Edward William Lambert, in 1979. She was also predeceased by all of her siblings, Esther, Ellen, Glenna, Ida May and Walter. A memorial service will be held in the spring with burial in East Burke, Vt.
