, of The Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center, Lyndonville, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, in Lyndonville at the age of 91. She was born in Lowell, Vt., Oct. 14, 1913, the daughter of Louis and Emma (Rivers) Lamontagne. Eva was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW. In 1932, she married Herbert Priest who predeceased her in 1992. Survivors include her son, Oscar Priest, of St. Johnsbury. Other survivors include Glenna Priest, of St. Johnsbury; a sister, Anna Gauthier, of The Pines, Lyndonville; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters, Beatrice Ailes, Blanche Zemba and Evelyn Lamontagne. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Church, Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at 11 a.m., with Father Patrick Forman, celebrant. Spring burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Lisa M. "Lee" Stephan

, of South Wheelock, died Saturday evening, Jan. 8, 2005, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury at the age of 84. She was born in Mindville, N.Y., March 14, 1920, the last surviving child of the late Bert L. and Lillian M. (Berlow) Miller. In 1939, she married Vincent J. Stephan. For many years, Mr. and Mrs. Stephan lived in New Jersey and raised their family. They enjoyed being Ball Room Dance instructors and danced as often as they could. In the mid-1960s, they moved to Vermont. They owned and operated the Stockade Restaurant, located on Memorial Drive in Lyndonville for 12 years. Survivors include three sons, Vincent B. Stephan, of Pennsylvania, Henry R. "Bobby" Stephan and his wife Barbara, also of Pennsylvania, and Thomas J. Stephan and his wife Linda, of South Wheelock; a daughter, June L. Cole and her husband Gilbert, of South Wheelock; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Jeanette Miller, of New Mexico, and Rosemary Stephan, of New Jersey; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Vincent J. Stephan, in 2001; seven brothers; and two sisters. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 11 a.m., at St. Elizabeth Church in Lyndonville with the Rev. Stephen Nichols celebrant. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Spring burial will be in Sulphur Spring Cemetery in Wheelock on Friday, May 13, at 10 a.m.

, 83, of Farr Hill Road, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at Littleton Regional Hospital after a brief battle with cancer. A native of Littleton, Ed was born a son to Cyrille and Antoinette (LeHoux) Fillion on Jan. 24, 1920. He attended Littleton schools. Ed married Bertha M. Pepin of St. Johnsbury, Vt., on June 10, 1942. He was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. Upon returning to Littleton, he worked as a plumber for Littleton Hardware and in 1961, Ed started his own plumbing business which he operated until he retired. Ed was an avid outdoorsman and sports fan. He enjoyed many recreational sports, especially golf in his younger years and the Senior Softball league in his later years. For almost two decades he walked the entire length of Farr Hill at least once a day, enjoying the company of the many friends he made along his way. Ed was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. In addition to his loving wife of 62 years, he leaves four sons; James, John and Peter of Littleton, and Paul of Eagle, Colorado; two brothers, Francis and Robert of Littleton; one sister, Alice McFarland of Iowa; 10 adoring grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. His brother, Roger, predeceased him. SERVICES -- The family will receive friends at the Pillsbury Funeral Home, 101 Union St., Littleton, on Sunday, Jan. 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday morning, Jan. 10 at 10 a.m. at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Joseph Klatka as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Rose Cemetery with Military Rites being presented by the VFW Howard Shawney Post No. 816 of Littleton. Roland R. Lapointe

, of West Palm Beach, Fla., passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005. He was born in Winooski, Vt., on Jan. 25, 1920, the son of Euclide and Lea (Rabidoux) Lapointe, both deceased. He was also predeceased by two brothers, Ralph and George "Zum" Lapointe. He attended Winooski schools and joined the Army National Guard in 1940 and was inducted into Federal Service in 1941. Roland served for nearly five years in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 43rd Infantry Division, Pacific Theatre, seeing combat for nearly three years. He participated in many campaigns against the Japanese in Guadalcanal, the Northern Solomons, New Guinea and Luzon. Initially a medic, he later became a heavy machine gunner and received several decorations and citations to include the Philippine Liberation ribbon with one Bronze Service Star, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Campaign ribbon, two Purple Hearts, and the Bronze Star for bravery. When he returned to Vermont after the war, he was called upon to serve as a pallbearer for many lifelong friends. He would not speak of his wartime experiences until recently. Roland was a very successful sales manager for Sears, Roebuck & Co. for 35 years and received many awards and commendations for his contributions to Sears. After retirement, he attended daily Mass at St. Juliana's Catholic Church in West Palm Beach where he served as an usher for many years. He was also a volunteer driver transporting people to their doctor's or other appointments. He loved children and could never see a child in need without trying to help. He was a loving, generous person who met the needs of others giving of himself freely and never expecting anything in return. Roland is survived by his two children, his son Daniel and daughter-in-law Sue Lapointe of Danville, Vt., his daughter, Leah Shewmaker and son-in-law David Shewmaker of Dallas, Texas; and by his two very special grandchildren, Cassie and Jason Shewmaker, whom he loved dearly. He also leaves his former spouse, Virginia Lapointe of West Palm Beach, Fla., who provided him with invaluable care and comfort during the last months of his life. He is also survived by one sister, Rita D. Hunt and her husband Jim of Shelburne, Vt.; and by two sisters-in-law, June Best and Cathryn Lapointe. Roland also leaves several nieces and nephews residing in Florida, Pennsylvania and Vermont, and most especially by two very special nieces, Kathy Santerre and June Plant of Vermont, where he spent many enjoyable weeks each summer visiting family and friends. There will be no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Stephen's Church in Winooski, Vt., Saturday, Jan. 29, at 11 a.m. Interment will be held immediately after the Mass. Dorothy M. Miller

, 70, a longtime Lyndonville resident, passed away Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005, at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center. The daughter of Andrew and Clara (St. Lapierre) Miller, she was born May 20, 1934, in Newport, Vt., where she grew up and attended schools. She married Donald Frank Miller; he predeceased her on Jan. 29, 2001. Dorothy was a homemaker. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, as well as her cats and dogs. Dorothy is survived by three children, Donna Miller of Maine, Donald F. Miller Jr. and his wife Maude of Lyndonville, and Diana M. Barnes and her husband Raymond Jr. of St. Johnsbury; five grandsons; four granddaughters; and a great-grandson. She was predeceased by her parents, a brother and a sister. There will be no services at this time.

, 88, of 269 Hanover Drive, North Haverhill, N.H., died Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, at his residence. He was born Nov. 18, 1916, in Trinidad, Colo., the second son of Robert E. and Marion (Williams) Roudebush. Sam attended the Colorado School of Mines. He worked for 45 years in the tire industry, retiring in 1985 from the Armstrong Rubber Company. He was a 50-year member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, a 40-year member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, and was a registered professional engineer in California, Ohio and Connecticut. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge 568 Barberton, Ohio, and a member of the Grafton-Kane Lodge 46 in North Haverhill, N.H. Mr. Roudebush also served as a water commissioner and on the Mt. Lake Precinct Board of Commissioners and the Haverhill Planning Board. He is survived by his wife, Josefina (Iragorri) Roudebush, of North Haverhill, whom he married on Aug. 22, 1952. Also a daughter, Susan R. Williams of Norfolk, Va.; three sons, Peter V.Z. Roudebush of Davenport, Iowa, Robert E. Roudebush of North Haverhill, N.H., and Samuel T. Roudebush of Alexandria, Va.; a brother, Jack Roudebush, Capt. U.S. Navy Retired, Monterey, Calif.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A calling hour will be held today, Jan. 12, from 7 to 8 p.m., followed by a Masonic Service at 8 p.m. at the Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch St., Woodsville, N.H. The funeral services will be on Thursday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m., at the Ricker Funeral Home. Father Daniel Sinibaldi will conduct an ecumenical service. Catherine (Kay) Nelson

, 91, of Canaan, Vt., passed away Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at the Derby Green Nursing Home in Derby, Vt. She was born Sept. 10, 1913, in Calais, Maine, the daughter of James B. and Mary (Anderson) Anderson. Mrs. Nelson attended school in Calais, and was a 1931 graduate of Calais Academy. She went on to attend Lynn Hospital School of Nursing in Lynn, Mass., graduating in 1937 as a registered nurse. She married the late Arthur H. Nelson on Dec. 25, 1937. In 1947 the Nelsons moved to Canaan, Vt., where Mr. Nelson served as a U.S. Border Patrol officer and later as an agent for U.S. Immigrations and Naturalization. Mrs. Nelson was extremely active in Canaan community affairs and events. She served as past president of the Canaan Women's Club and was best known as a longtime correspondent for the Colebrook News and Sentinel newspaper, in her column Canaan Chatter. Mrs. Nelson was also active in the Grace Methodist Church Women's Fellowship, the University of Vermont Extension Homemakers and as a member of the St. John de Crevecoeur Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Catherine Nelson is survived by a daughter, Judith and her husband James Kavanagh of Newport, Vt.; a son, David and his wife Patricia Nelson of Wilton, N.H.; seven grandchildren, including Michael Kavanagh and his wife Cynthia of Brookline, Mass., Timothy Kavanagh and his wife Cheryl of Burlington, Vt., Andrea Kavanagh and her fiance Ewell Smith of Washington, D.C., Katherine Kavanagh of Newport, Vt., Kristen Nelson and her fiance Tony Yakovakis of Milford, N.H., Erik Nelson and Andrew Nelson, both of Wilton, N.H.; and three great-grandchildren, Matthew, Alexander and Sawyer Kavanagh, all of Burlington, Vt.; several nieces and nephews; and her lifelong friend, Lillian Nutile of Wakefield, Mass. , 25, of Lost Nation Road, Groveton, N.H., died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at Week's Memorial Hospital, with her family by her side after a very courageous 14-month battle with cancer. Born March 19, 1979, in Lancaster, N.H., a daughter of Michael R. and Kathy A. (Miles) St. Onge, she was a life-long resident of Groveton. Christy was a graduate of Groveton High School, Class of 1997. She then went to Berlin Vo-tech for two years before attending Vermont Technical College to become a veterinarian assistant and graduating with her associate's degree in 2001. After college she worked for a while at the Amherst Animal Hospital in Amherst, N.H., then she went to work at the Breckenridge Manor in Virginia Beach. She returned home and went to work as a medical records and histology clerk at Week's Memorial Hospital, Lancaster. She was a member of the Groveton United Methodist Church and of the American Legion Fredonwarell Auxiliary Post 17, Groveton. She loved horses, being outdoors, snowmachining, 4-wheeling, and caring for animals. She also enjoyed making blankets and had her own directions called "Christy's way of making blankets." Family members include her parents, Michael "Mike" and Kathy St. Onge of Groveton; her sister and brother-in-law, Casey and Brian Dowland of Guildhall, Vt.; paternal grandfather, Norice St. Onge of Groveton; maternal grandparents, David and Shirley Miles of Groveton; her "child," Maverick; two uncles and their wives, Dave and Elizabeth Miles of Merrimack, N.H., and Mark and Kim Miles of Erie, Penn.; and four cousins, Derek, Devin, Taylor and Brooker. She was predeceased by her paternal grandmother, Pauline St. Onge, on July 22, 2004. At Christy's request there will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at 11 a.m., at the Groveton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Peter Parent, pastor, and the Rev. Richard Phillips officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Northumberland Cemetery. Donald G. Frizzell

, 70, of Colebrook, N.H., died at his camp on Robichaud Brook in Dixville, N.H., on Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005. Mr. Frizzell was born in West Burke, Vt., on April 4, 1934. He was the son of Burton Leo Frizzell and Miriam (Hooper) Frizzell Jenkins, and the stepson of Ralph Jenkins. After moving with his family from West Burke to Colebrook in 1945, Mr. Frizzell graduated from Colebrook Academy in 1952. He served in the Army during the Korean War era. He then attended the Royal Victoria Hospital Graduate School of X-Ray Technology in Montreal, Quebec, graduating in 1958. Mr. Frizzell was employed as an X-ray technician for many years at several hospitals, including as the director of the School of X-Ray Technology at North Adams Regional Hospital in North Adams, Mass. After returning home with his family to Colebrook in 1973, Mr. Frizzell was employed for many years at the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital in Colebrook. He also undertook many other jobs and pursuits, including chimney sweeping, buying and selling coins, selling insurance, and in later years, selling moose "antlas" that he found during his trips in the woods. As a veteran, Mr. Frizzell was an active member of the American Legion, and served as treasurer of the George L. O'Neil American Legion Post in Colebrook. He faithfully marched in the Memorial Day parades. His community service also included 12 years on the Colebrook School Board, three years on the Clarksburg (Mass.) School Board, many years on the Vestry of St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Colebrook, as a library trustee in Clarksburg, and as an umpire at local baseball games. Mr. Frizzell is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 48 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Frizzell of Colebrook. Together they enjoyed many activities, including trips to Old Orchard Beach, attending Lancaster Fair with friends, dancing to the music of their son Tom's band, Thunder Valley Express, and attending Colebrook sporting events, especially those of his children and grandchildren. He also deeply loved his family and the outdoors, including snowmobiling and hunting big bucks in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Sims Hill, Meacham Swamp and Stub Hill Pond were special places. Mr. Frizzell was also an avid long-distance runner, and a frequent participant of the annual Dixville Races since their inception. At the age of 67, Mr. Frizzell took first place in his age group in the New Hampshire Senior Olympics 5K run. Mr. Frizzell is also survived by three sons, Timothy D. Frizzell and his wife Linda, their son Kyle and daughter Jessica, all of Lemington, Vt., and daughter Melissa Dimmitt, of Lancaster, N.H.; Thomas D. Frizzell and his wife Jane, sons Justin, Ryan and Ian, and daughter Sarah, all of Lemington, Vt.; and Jonathan S. Frizzell and his wife Katherine, sons James and Cameron, and daughter Marguerite, all of Colebrook. He is also survived by three brothers, Burton Leo (Buster) Frizzell and his wife Betty of Lemington, Vt., Barry W. Jenkins and his wife Beverly of Colebrook, and Brian H. Jenkins and his wife Melody, of Winthrop, Maine; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Richard (Betty) Frizzell of Gloversville, N.Y.; his mother-in-law, Marguerite H. Wiswell of Colebrook; his sister-in-law, Audrey W. Noyes and her husband Sam; and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Mr. Frizzell was preceded in death by his two brothers, Richard S. Frizzell and Terrence P. Jenkins. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Jenkins Funeral Home in Colebrook. A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Colebrook Village Cemetery with military honors to follow. , 90, formerly of Starr King Park, Lancaster, N.H., died Thursday morning, Jan. 13, 2005, at the Clough Extended Care Center in New London, N.H. Mr. Kimball was born in Lancaster on Oct. 2, 1914, the son of Ray E. and Della (Cole) Kimball. Rolland was a lifetime resident of the Groveton and Lancaster area. He graduated from Groveton High School in 1933. During World War II he served with the U.S. Army Battery B 237th Anti-aircraft Artillery Searchlight Battalion in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and was a Purple Heart recipient. For many years he was a rural mail carrier with the U.S. Post Office until retiring in 1978. Family members include two sons, Ray E. Kimball of Grantham, and Leon C. Kimball of Hampton, Va.; four daughters, Katherine A. Strickline of Baltimore, Md., Rolande L. Jones of Christ Church, New Zealand, Jenette E. Reid of Martin, Ga., and Rebecca M. Reid of Mt. Airy, Ga.; two brothers, Raymond L. Kimball of Springfield, Mass., and Douglas Kimball of Littleton; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Ellen Ann "Annie" (McDonough) Kimball, in 1994. Visiting hours will be held Saturday afternoon, Jan. 15, from 2-4 p.m., at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. , 69, of South Albany, died unexpectedly at his home Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, in a house fire. He was born in Stannard on Nov. 6, 1935, the son of the late Arthur and Alexandra (Brochu) Messier. Paul graduated from Greensboro High School in 1952 and Saint Michael's College in 1956. After college he worked in Connecticut at Skirosky Aircraft, then returned to Burlington, where he worked as an insurance agent for Prudential Insurance Company for 29 years. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed hunting, fishing and reading. Paul is survived by his wife, Catherine Britch Messier of South Albany; his children, Michael and his partner Sue Moore, and Stephen and his partner Sally Deuso, all of Cambridge, Jeanne and her husband Randy Chicoine of South Burlington, Roger Messier and his wife Sandy of Manteca, Calif., John of Williston, Daniel of Panama City, Fla., Laurie of Colchester, Sue of Williston, and David of South Burlington; two stepchildren, Guy Kittell and his wife Lisa of Richford, and Jessie and her husband Matthew Boone of Griswold, Conn.; 13 grandchildren, Danielle, Michael and Christine Chicoine, Marissa Mayette, Katherine, Meghan, Jason, Stephen and Katina Messier, Blaine and Ashley Kittell, and Juliette and Ian Boone. He also leaves two brothers, Gerard and his wife Vivian, and Andre and his wife Sybil, all of Hardwick; a sister-in-law, Martha Messier of East Hardwick; as well as nieces, nephews and other extended family. He was predeceased by his former wife, Mary Lou Fischer, in 2002; and a brother, Robert Messier, who died in October 2004. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday, Jan. 17, at 11 a.m., at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Greensboro Bend with the Rev. John Hamilton, celebrant. Spring interment will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. Howard Milton Colby

, 97, of Riva Vue Road, Lunenburg, passed away peacefully at his home, Tuesday morning, Jan. 4, 2005. Mr. Colby was born in Lunenburg on April 10, 1907, at the Colby Farm, the ninth child and fourth son of Luke and Nellie E. (Smith) Colby. He attended the Pierce District one-room school with his oldest sister, Olive, as teacher, and the Lunenburg High School for two years until it closed. He then went to work for his uncle, Don Colby, in the wood industry, turning bobbins at the Bobbin Mill in the Pierce District, and cutting timber at the Colby sawmill in Victory, Vt. He met his wife-to-be, Iola Hodgdon of Granby, Vt., while logging there. They married May 29, 1932, had their three surviving children, and observed their 70th wedding anniversary in 2002. He lived most of his life in Lunenburg involved in the wood industry and farming. In the early 1940s, he purchased his brother Ralph's farm and in the mid-40s, formed the E. & H. Colby Lumber Co. with his brother Ellis. The business later became Colby Lumber Corp., incorporating their sons, and supplied custom-sawed lumber throughout the area, including pallets to local paper mills. It closed in the mid-80s due to Canadian competition. Howard was an avid outdoorsman all his life until his 80s, fishing and hunting, including many trips to Canada with friends where he also owned a cottage for some years. He impacted his lore for the outdoors to his children and grandchildren. He and his wife exemplified the best of dancers at the local country dance halls until their health began to fail. Saturday night kitchen junkets were held in neighborhood homes where he played the harmonica. During the depression and 1940s, he and Iola just managed to provide for their family but he would share a few dollars with those who came knocking at the door asking for a temporary loan. The sugar-on-snow parties at the Howard Colby sugarhouse, benefiting the Lunenburg Methodist Church, were an annual event for the area and attracted many from away to the traditional spring event. Until the last years of his life, he was proud of their vegetable gardens and no visitor left without fresh vegetables. He was a member of the Lunenburg Methodist Church and the Masonic Order of the Benton Lodge 88 of Guildhall, Vt. He was presented with his 70th pin by dignitaries of the order on his 97th birthday in 2004 and planned to return this April for the presentation of his 75th pin. He is survived by a daughter, Judith C. Young; sons and spouses, Weston H. and Frances Colby, and Amos C. and Mary Jane Colby, all of Lunenburg; a sister, Rachel C. Gould of Kingston, Mass.; a cousin, Erma Simonds of St. Johnsbury; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three grandchildren; his wife in 2002; a son-in-law in 2003; and 12 siblings. Funeral services were held at the Bailey Funeral Home, Jan. 8, officiated by the Rev. William J. Brown III. A Masonic service concluded the celebration of Howard's life with 11 brothers participating. Spring interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery, South Lunenburg, Vt. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Kevin Colby Scholarship Fund or for the preservation of the Lunenburg Methodist Church with checks made out to Frances Colby or Judith Young, Bobbin Mill Road, Lunenburg, VT 05906.

, 76, of Lost Nation Road, Lancaster, N.H., died Friday morning, Jan. 14, 2004, at the Veterans Hospital, White River Junction, Vt. Mr. King was born in North Stratford on Sept. 19, 1928, the son of William and Carmen (Dupuis) King. He was raised in North Stratford and also served for a time in the U.S. Army. He worked several years for the railroad and for many years he was employed with Groveton Paper Company. He also worked as a social worker, bus driver, cemetery caretaker and acquired a welders license. He loved fishing, hunting and raising chickens. Armand was a member of the American Legion Post 17, Groveton, and was also a Fourth Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus. Family members include four sons, Millard King of Lancaster, Armand King Jr. of Barnet, Vt., Patrick King of Lancaster, and John King of Whitefield; two daughters, Linda Raymond of Lancaster, and Cindy Hatjialexiou of Colebrook; six sisters, Rita Emerson of Lancaster, Orleans Jeffers of Westbrook, Maine, Joyce Holden of Charlestown, Gloria Brooks of Lancaster, Darlene Henry of Pittsburg, and Carol Sibulkin of Hooksett; 21 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Crystal King, on Oct. 22, 2003. Visiting hours will be held Sunday afternoon and evening, Jan. 16, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., at the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Monday morning at 11 a.m., at All Saints Church, Lancaster. Rev. Raymond Ball, pastor, will officiate. A graveside committal service with military honors will be held in the spring at Calvary Cemetery in Lancaster.
