of Derby would like to acknowledge his peaceful death on February 4, 2005, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Mr. Reynolds was a 16-year resident of Derby after retiring from the Yonkers Police Department in New York. He was born in Yonkers and attended schools there, followed by a three-year service with the 82nd Airborne Division. He was a "cop's cop" and a "man's man." He served as a motorcycle cop for many years followed by serving as a first-grade detective. He was a longtime member of the Westchester Police Emerald Society Band and Friendly Sons of St. Patrick in New York City. For a short while before he became ill, he was a DEO with Immigration Service in Vermont. Survivors include Pat Fisher of Derby; daughter Kim Balog of Amawalk, New York; sons: Robert Jr. of Hastings, New York, Joseph Reynolds of New York, Brian Fisher of Derby Line, and Michael Sean Reynolds of Lebanon, New Hampshire; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held in New York City with a Mass of Celebration of his life and career attended by police from the Yonkers Patrol Motorcycle Division and the Westchester County Pipe Band.
Raymonde "Rae" D. Smith

, 84, of Newport, beloved wife of Dean, died in Newport on Wednesday, February 2, 2005. Mrs. Smith was born in Coventry on March 6, 1920, a daughter of Bruce Bouthillier and Antoinette Marcaurelle. She and her husband, Dean, were married in 1941, and they owned and operated a farm on the Beebe Road for 27 years. She was a hard-working woman who enjoyed gardening, especially her flower gardens, and she liked to cook, her specialties being baked beans and doughnuts. She was an active member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and its ladies group for which she always supported by cooking and helping to run its hash suppers many years ago. She made quilts for many years as gifts for family and friends. She also enjoyed going to bingo. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the love of her life, and she relished their coming to visit. She is survived by her husband, Dean; by her son Dave and his wife, Diane, of Missouri City, Texas; by her grandchildren: Laura and her husband, Tim Gabrelcik, of Tarpon Springs, Florida, and Kara and her husband, Bob Hutchinson, of Nashua, New Hampshire; by her great-grandchildren: Ashley, Kelsey, Timothy Dean, Kaylee, and David Grant; by her sister Helen and her husband, Bill Burgess, of Newport; by several nieces and nephews; and by her special friends, Ida and Chris Willis and Ron Corkins. She was predeceased by her brothers: Tony, George, and Tom; and by her sisters: Lucille, Rose, Claire, Simone, and Janet. There will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport. , 87, of Newport died in Newport on Sunday, February 6, 2005. Mr. Nolin was born in Underhill on October 20, 1917, a son of J.C. and Mabel F. (Farrell) Nolin. He was a graduate of Jericho High School and Champlain Business College. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II, earning the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal, and the Bronze Service Star. He worked for many years for the U.S. Customs Service. He was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus Gibbons Council No. 1157 and a past grand knight of the Gibbons Council No. 2285. He enjoyed watching Boston Red Sox games and going to daily Mass. On April 24, 1948, he married Domina Balich, who survives him. He is survived by his daughters: Joanne Nolin of Newport, Mary Nolin of Derby, and Patricia Nolin of Reston, Virginia; by his grandchildren Laura and Chris and his wife, Nancie; by his sister Geraldean Darby; and by his sisters-in-law Madeleine Nolin and Geraldine Calcagni. He was predeceased by his sister Ellyn Racine; and by his brothers James and Bernard. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated February 9 at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newport with the Reverend Yvon Royer officiating. Spring interment will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery in Newport. , 93, a former resident of Lowell, died at Maple Lane Nursing Home in Barton on Monday, January 31, 2005. Mr. Mason was born, July 29, 1911, in Irasburg, a son of Lewis and Elvia (Shatney) Mason. He was brought up in the Albany area. His work history includes being chief of police at Bennington College, road commissioner for the town of Albany, a dairy farmer, a carpenter, foreman of a lumber camp, a railroad employee, and occasionally the substitute minister of his church. He is survived by a sister, Mary Marsh, of Vergennes; by a brother, Jesse Mason, of Hyde Park; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by five brothers: Leonard, Chelsia, Abner, Roger, and Sidney Mason; by two sisters, Desmah Durocher and Hilda Peavy; and by his companion, Eleanor Pope. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, February 9, at 3:30 p.m., at the Albany Methodist Church with Pastor Nathan Strong officiating. There will be no calling hours. , 66, of Milan, Illinois, died Monday, January 31, 2005, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iowa City. Mr. Smith was born in Barton on November 20, 1938, a son of Floyd and Thelma Kinsley Smith. He graduated from Barton Academy in 1956. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1978 after serving for 22 and a half years. The Kewanee Boiler Company then employed him for 24 years. He retired in 2000. He was a member of the Milan American Legion, the Sea Owl Association, the Milan Rifle Club, and Orleans Lodge No. 55 of Free and Accepted Masons. He married Jane Jordon Payne on December 26, 1986. Survivors include his wife; daughters Tina Marie Smith of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Lisa Smith of Kewanee, Illinois; a son, Anthony Smith, of Moline, Illinois; stepsons Vincent Payne of Andalusia, Illinois, and Chris Brasmer of Moline; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Grace Mason, of Barton; and several cousins. Funeral services were held February 4 at the Gibson Funeral Home in Port Byron, Illinois. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery in Port Byron with full military honors. , 93, of East Craftsbury died at Craftsbury Community Care Center on January 28, 2005, where she had lived for the past six years. Mrs. Hadash was born December 19, 1911, in Aylmer, Quebec, a daughter of William and Mabel (Cross) Stewart. On August 2, 1950, she married Eli Hadash, who predeceased her in 1984. She made history by becoming the first female clerk in the Canadian government. During World War II she decoded secret documents. When she was young, she was a bookkeeper for a golf club near Ottawa, Ontario. She and her husband ran a grocery store in Amherstburg, Ontario. She is survived by her son the Reverend Brendan Hadash of West Glover and his spouse, Alan Hultquist. Funeral services will be held in Windsor, Ontario, where she will be buried. , 87, of Beebe Plain died Friday evening, February 4, 2005, at North Country Hospital in Newport. Mr. Gaudreau was born on April 19, 1917, in Nôtre-Dame du Rosaire, Quebec, the eldest son of Eugène and R'gina (Allaire) Gaudreau. On June 15, 1938, he married Germaine Lamontagne at Sainte-Th'rèse de l'Enfant J'sus in Beebe, Quebec. She predeceased him on April 25, 2001. As a young man he attended the Saint Charles Borrom'o Seminary in Sherbrooke, Quebec, where he received a secondary education. His strong work ethic prevailed throughout his life. In his younger years, he worked as a stone cutter in Beebe and was employed at Butterfield's Tap & Dye in Derby Line. He retired in 1979. He enjoyed music and sang Gregorian chants in the choir at Sainte-Th'rèse in Beebe, of which he was a member. He also enjoyed sports and was an enthusiastic baseball player and manager in the Sunset League of the 1940s and early 1950s. Following his retirement, he enjoyed gardening and working on various home projects throughout the years. He was an avid reader, a pastime that occupied a good deal of his time in later years. He leaves his six children: Pierrette Paradis of Windsor, Connecticut, Denise Bouffard and her husband, Paul, of Newport, Gabrielle Carr and her husband, James, of Derby, Andr' Gaudreau of St. Albans, Lucille Gaudreau of Newport, and Suzanne Gaudreau of St. Albans; by his seven grandchildren: Suzanne Paradis of Windsor, Connecticut, Mark Paradis of Windsor, Jane Bouffard of Stowe, Monica Libby and her husband, Scott, of Newport, Peter Bouffard and his wife, Deborah, of Lincoln, Nebraska, Tom Bouffard of Pittsburgh, California, and Julie Bouffard of Bowie, Maryland; by five great-grandchildren: Amanda, Sara, Michaela, Laura, and Anna Grace Libby of Newport; by a sister, Marcelle Gosselin, and her husband, Paul, of Newport; by two brothers, Ren' Gaudreau of Beebe and Jean-Guy Gaudreau and his wife, Denise, of Beebe; and by sisters-in-law Jeanne Gaudreau of Derby Line and C'cile Gaudreau of Beebe. He was predeceased by two brothers, Lucien and Robert; by two infant siblings, Maxence and Raymond; by a little sister, Odile; and by son-in-law Andr' Paradis. , 86, beloved wife of Milton W. Drew for 45 years, died and went to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 6, 2005. Mrs. Drew was born on July 21, 1918, in Holland, a daughter of John and Barbara Jenny Tabor. She graduated from Derby Academy in 1936 and married her husband on October 8, 1938. He predeceased her in 1983. In 1941, she and her husband became employed as Newport area weather observers for the National Weather Service of the U.S. Department of Commerce. She was the recipient of the Thomas Jefferson Award "for unusual and outstanding accomplishment in the field of meteorological observations... and for outstanding service and dedication in reporting climatological data." She also received the Benjamin Franklin Award for over 55 years of service as a cooperative weather observer. She was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Derby and a sister in the Order of the Eastern Star Lakeside Chapter No. 27. She is survived by two sons, Neil of Malone, New York, and Darryl and his wife, Rita, of Scotia, New York; by three grandchildren: Kimberly DeMattio of Colchester, Laurinda Halliday and her husband, Scott, of Clifton Park, New York, and Dennis Drew and his wife, Karen, of Rochester, New York; by three great-grandchildren: Amanda DeMattio and Brian and Jennifer Halliday; and by several nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her brother, Everett Tabor and his wife, Harriet, and her sister Ruby Brown. Funeral services were held February 9 at Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel in Newport.

, 73, of Irasburg died at his home on Sunday, February 6, 2005, following a long illness. Mr. Curtis was born in Coventry on April 18, 1931, a son of Homer C. and Avis A. (Burroughs) Curtis. On December 29, 1951, he married Gertrude Royer, who predeceased him on January 16, 2004. He was a supervisor at Ethan Allen in Orleans, retiring after 38 years. His hobbies included sugaring, riding motorcycles, snowmobiling, hunting, and cutting wood. He enjoyed his Kubota tractor, when his health permitted. He and his late wife, Gertrude, enjoyed traveling. He was a hard-working man who involved himself in many activities. He cared for his family and delighted in having them come for visits. He is survived by his children: Terry Curtis and his wife, Cecile, of Brownington, Debbie Hamel and her husband, Raymond, of Orleans, Leigh Curtis and his wife, Sonya, of Irasburg, and Keith Curtis and his wife, Ginette, of Irasburg; by his brother Donald Curtis and Camile Travin of Orleans; by his sisters Rosemary Rowe and her husband, Robert, of Newport and Faith Perkins and her husband, Bill, of Westmore; by his close friends Rene and Kathy Desmarais of Irasburg; by 11 grandchildren; by 11 great-grandchildren and one to be named Logan to come; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Bill. , 75, of Morgan died peacefully February 2, 2005, in Burlington surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Burroughs was born December 4, 1929, in Lachute, Canada, a daughter of Earl and Muriel (Hamline) Dority. On April 26, 1969, she married Charles Burroughs, who survives her. She was a certified nurse's aide at the former Orleans County Memorial Hospital and retired in 1989 from Bel-Aire Quality Care Nursing Center in Newport. She is survived by her husband, Charles Burroughs, of Morgan; by two sons, Stevan Robbins of Shelton, Washington, and William Robbins and his wife, Gail, of Shelton; by the following grandchildren: Daniel , Shauna, Betsy, Wayne, Brandon, and Breanna Robbins; by a sister-in-law, Evelyn Dority, of Newport; and by the following nieces and nephews: Norman Dority of Phoenix, Arizona, David Dority of Massachusetts, Kathy Dority of Newport, and Salley Dority of Lyndonville. , 40, of Barton died suddenly February 19, 2005, at his home in Barton. Mr. Vigario was born April 1, 1964, in Newport, a son of Feliciano and Barbara (Trucott) Vigario. He was a tree surgeon and owned and operated Double Bar Tree Service. He was also a long-distance truck driver for many years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, dancing, and listening to country music. He enjoyed the company of his niece. He is survived by his parents, Feliciano and Barbara Vigario, of Barton; by a sister, Lori-Ann Vigario, and her friend, David Flint, of Coventry; by a niece, Felicia-Ann Flint; by his grandmother, Vivian Trucott of Sheffield; by several aunts, uncles, and cousins; by a good friend, Karen Goodwin; and by his little buddy Parker Brown. A celebrated Mass of Christian Burial was held February 23 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Barton. Spring interment will be held in St. Theresa's Cemetery in Orleans.
