Ephraim Walter Salls Sr.

, 81, a lifelong resident of Greensboro, died Tuesday, October 4, 2005, at the Copley Hospital in Morrisville. Mr. Salls was born November 24, 1923, in Campton, New Hampshire, a son of the late Edward and Clara (Philbrook) Salls. He attended Greensboro public schools. On July 20, 1955, he married Pauline Pearl Fleming. As a young man, he was a farmhand and worked in the woods. He later was a self-employed truck driver carrying pulp to local sawmills. For many years he was a caretaker for 80 camps in the Greensboro area. He was a past member of the Greensboro Fire Department. He will be remembered by Greensboro residents as the town mayor. He enjoyed dancing, visiting with family and friends, and auto racing. Survivors include a son, Ephraim W. "Buddy" Salls Jr., and his fiancée, Michelle Farrington, of Brookfield; a daughter, Cindy Bishop, and her husband, Steve, of Wolcott; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; eight stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by three brothers: Burton Tracy, Howard Salls, and Erwin Salls Sr.; and by three sisters: Gertrude Dunbar, Evelyn Withers, and Velma Webster. To honor his request, there will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 15, at 2 p.m. in the Greensboro Village Cemetery with the Reverend Alden Launer officiating.

, 87, of Winchendon,Massachusetts, died October 9, 2005, at the home of her daughter Susan in Irasburg. She died peacefully in the presence of her daughters, surrounded by the love of her family that was so precious to her. Mrs. Aldrich was born February 1, 1918, in Exeter,New Hampshire, a daughter of Gertrude Bethia (Keller) and Charles Augustus Gilmore. She attended the public schools of Winchendon and graduated from MurdockHigh School in 1936. She later attended the Parsons School of Design in Boston and Traphagen School of Fashion in New York where she studied dressmaking, costume design, and illustration. On June 27, 1942, she married Kenneth Aldrich in Winchendon, where she made her home until her recent move to Vermont. She was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She was active in her community and a hero to many who knew her. For many years she worked as a teacher's aide in the WinchendonElementary School. She loved this work, and when she retired she continued to volunteer many hours helping children learn to read. She took pride in her work in the schools. Over the years she won several community service awards. She volunteered for many years at the polling booths no matter what the weather. Her involvement in the church was important to her. She was a member of the women's fellowship group. She was an active member of the Winchendon Historical Society. She was an avid reader and Jeopardy whiz. She had a keen interest in the lives of her family, always knowing what each was doing. She always sent cards and letters with articles of interest enclosed. For many years she took in sewing and did alterations for people in the community, which she continued doing until the last few months. In 1938, as a young woman, she started a knitting club called the Knutty Knitters that continued for over 60 years. This group of women would gather at each other's homes each week to tell stories, maybe knit, sip tea, eat, and most of all laugh. She loved to travel and began her adventures traveling alone on a bus trip across the country to visit her brother and aunts in California. Her most memorable trip was when she and her husband traveled to Italy. She later organized many trips to Europe with family and friends. She is survived by her brother Charles of Lakeside, Oregon; by her son Donald Aldrich and his wife, Lois, of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania; by daughters Nancy Hinds-Aldrich of Standish, Maine, and Susan Aldrich and her partner, Winnie Jones, of Irasburg; by four grandchildren: Matt and Abbie Hinds-Aldrich of Standish, Maine, Lori Miller and her husband, Brendan, of Mt. Joy, Pennsylvania, and Brad Aldrich and his wife, Kate, of Quarryville, Pennsylvania; and by three great-grandchildren: Jordan and Janelle Miller of Mt. Joy and Kent Aldrich of Quarryville, Pennylvania. She deeply valued her connections with her nieces, nephews, and longtime friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth; by her brother Harold; and by her beloved sister Laura. , 85, of Lowell died in Derby on Friday, October 14, 2005. Mr. McAllister was born in North Troy on September 24, 1920, a son of John R. and Mary Ellen (Benware) McAllister. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, the hills of Vermont, and the old rugged Vermont lifestyle. He is survived by his brother Charles A. McAllister of Lowell; by his sister Shirley Pecor and her husband, Kenneth, of Burlington; and by several nieces and nephews. , 68, of Westfield died in Newport on Sunday, October 16, 2005. Mr. Wrabel was born in Bridgeport,Connecticut, on April 24, 1937, a son of Rudolph and Edna (Wilson)Wrabel. He retired from the Newtown Connecticut Police Department, where he had worked as a K-9 police officer for 20 years. Following his retirement, he worked as a roadway inspector in Palm Beach County,Florida, for 15 years. He was a member of the Police Officer Brotherhood Association in Washington, D.C. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He married Jean Elkins, who predeceased him in 1980. He is survived by his son Robert Wrabel Jr. of Westfield; by his grandchildren Shannon Wrabel of Westfield and Danielle Wrabel of Connecticut; by his sister Sue Tompkins and her husband, Ray, of Newtown; by his niece Kimberly Tompkins of Connecticut; and by his nephew Scott Tompkins of Connecticut. He was predeceased by his brothers: Rudolph, Robert, and John. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 21, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Troy at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Jerome Mercure officiating. , 64, died and was set free on October 6, 2005, at 6:02 p.m. to reside in God's garden with her youngest son Douglas Crews and her two young daughters. Mrs. Gilliam was born June 14, 1941, in Charlotte, North Carolina. She lived life to the fullest extent. She loved her family and friends and loved to play lottery tickets. She worked all of her life until the last five years. She is survived by her children: Teresa Mashteare of Newport, who cared for her day in and day out until the end, Timothy Crews of Kentucky, and Vanessa N. Brunelle, who she raised as her own child. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Rebecca Emery, Jessie Mashteare, Anthony Cross, Sabrina Morgan, and Shane Riehs Morgan, all of Vermont; by her six great-grandchildren: Makaylah and AubriaunaMcSweeney of Winooski, Jessie and JavenMashteare of Winooski, Nicholas Morgan of Burlington, and Timothy Crews of Florida; by her sisters and their spouses: Shirley and Bland Rice, Joyce and June Bare, and Frances and Charles High; by many nieces and nephews, all of North Carolina; and by the love of her life, Tristen Singer, of Essex. , 90, died in Newport on Monday, October 10, 2005. Mrs. Nelson was born on April 2, 1915, in the Dr. Rublee house on School Street, next to NewportHigh School, now a Christian academy. Mrs. Nelson, her brother the late Dr. Frederick McIver of Plymouth,New Hampshire, her sister Marion (Buckland) Coleman of Gainsville, Florida, and her parents, Dr. Leo Hazen and Edna Davis McIver, moved to the William Hammond farm in the early 1920s. Mrs. Nelson's mother, Edna McIver, who graduated from the Plymouth Teacher's College in New Hampshire in 1903, taught school in a one-room schoolhouse in Plymouth. An active member of the Women's Society and the Women's Christian Temperance Union, Mrs. Nelson's mother worked gathering information and historical pictures of the Newport area to write a book on the area. Writing historical books about Newport would fall to Mrs. Nelson. She dramatically expanded on her mother's research, worked tirelessly writing, and edited with her publisher to create two definitive volumes. Frontier Crossroads: The Evolution of Newport Vermont and Frontier Crossroads: The People of Newport Vermont chronicle two centuries of the history of the southern end of LakeMemphremagog. In addition to being the resident historian, she was busy with Women's Club, Retired Teachers Association, and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Her leadership roles have been as Women's Club president and past state regent of the DAR. As a child, she enjoyed winter skiing in the area and summers playing in the wide and shallow Baker River at Grandmother Davis' in Plymouth. She graduated from NewportHigh School in 1933 and received a bachelor of science degree in home economics from the University of Vermont in 1937. During the World War II, she worked as a dietitian at the BostonCityHospital. She was in charge of the milk lab, which made all baby formulas for the hospital. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, she taught home economics at NewportHigh School. In the 1960s she worked for the state coordinating the development of northern Vermont's Head Start programs and as a part-time dietitian for Bel-Aire Quality Care Nursing Facility. She married Robert Nelson following his return from serving three years in the Air Force in Europe and North Africa during World War II. They returned to Newport and bought the family farm from her mother in 1947. This followed the untimely death of her optometrist father, mayor of Newport at the time. She and her husband were co-owners and operators of the Newport Aqua Sports Haven marina on the west side of Newport's shoreline. Her husband died in 1996 at the age of 78. She and her husband were married for over 50 years. She is survived by two children, Richard, born in 1950, and John, born in 1952. Richard lives with his wife, Gloria, in Annapolis, Maryland, and John lives with his wife, Marcia Lee, in Amesbury, Massachusetts. Her granddaughter Gina Dalin, her husband, Drew, and their son Chase Robert live in South Boston. People knew her as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, neighbor, peer, local historian, and author. Funeral services were held October 15 at the NewportUnitedChurch with the Reverend Martha Peck officiating. Interment followed at PineGroveCemetery in Newport. , 81, of Newport died at his home on Wednesday, October 19, 2005. Mr. Anderson was born in Medford, Massachusetts, on May 2, 1924, a son of William M. and Nora F. (Murphy) Anderson. He served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of World War II. He worked as an engineer for the U.S. government. He enjoyed photography and was interested in electronics and technology. , 87, of Newport, son of the late Austin and Lillian (Millington) Smith of Rock Island, Quebec, and a retired dairy farmer, died in Newport on Friday, October 21, 2005. Mr. Smith was born in Barnston, Quebec, on January 22, 1918. He and his beloved late wife of 64 years, Raymonde "Rae," farmed for approximately 30 years in Derby, finally retiring in 1979. For a number of years he was very active in St. Mark's Episcopal Church and held the position of junior warden for several years. He always maintained a frugal and sensible approach to the important business of dairy farming. He had a wonderful feel for both the land and dairy cattle. He was noted for growing outstanding crops and maintaining an excellent dairy herd. He was generally a quiet man, possessed of quick wit and a dry sense of humor. When asked once if he and his wife traveled much, he replied, "Yup, we traveled quite a bit, back and forth from the house to the barn." In his retirement years, he was noted for raising vegetables, yet he only occasionally ate them, in small amounts, to appease his family. He was predeceased in February by his wife, Rae, who was the love of his life. He was also predeceased by several brothers and sisters: Florence, Raymond, Frank, Lawrence, Jim, Floris, Doris, Josephine, Austin, and Mead. He is survived by his brother Dale Smith of Ontario; by his sister Alice Wells of Orleans; by his son David Smith and his wife, Diane (DiMarcantonio), of Missouri City, Texas; by his granddaughters Laura Gabrelcik and her husband, Tim, of Tarpon Springs, Florida, and Kara Hutchinson and her husband, Robert, of Nashua, New Hampshire; by his great-grandchildren: Ashley, Kelsey, Dean, Kaylee, and David Grant; by his "special daughters" Ida and Chris Willis; and by his special friend, Ron Corkins. He was a program analyst at the Pica Tinny Arsenal in New Jersey. He had resided on Nettles Island in Jensen Beach for the past 20 years. He was a member of the Nettles Island Men's Club, Horseshoe Club, and Theater Guild. , 76, of Derby died on Wednesday, October 19, 2005, in Newport. Mr. Orr was born on March 28, 1929, in Coventry, a son of Clinton Thomas Orr and Helen (Priest) Orr. He was a graduate of Newport High School in 1947. He married Janet Brown of Southampton, Massachusetts, at Fort Benning, Georgia, on October 7, 1951. He was in the U.S. Army for 12 years, being discharged at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, after serving in the Far East Command during the Korean War. For over 30 years, he lived in Springfield, Massachusetts, where he was a member of all the York Rites of Masonery, the Scottish Rite, and Melha Shrine. A Scoutmaster at Foster Memorial Church for ten years, he also worked with the Cub Scouts and was the leader of an Explorer Scout Post. He was on the Eagle Scout Board of Review. He worked on various boards at Foster Memorial Church in Springfield and was on the board of deacons for a number of years. He was a member of the Parent Teacher Association of Sixteen Acres School, Duggan Junior High School, Classical High School, and Technical High School. He was a member of Hampden County Baseball Umpires Association for a number of years, working high school, American Legion, and semi-professional ballgames. He was employed by the U.S. Post Office in Springfield for 27 years. He started his postal career working on the U.S. mail trains from Springfield to Montreal and New York City. He worked on the highway postal service from Springfield to Burlington. After the train and bus service was terminated, he was transferred to the post office in Springfield, where he worked as a general supervisor until his retirement in December 1988. After retirement he and his wife returned to the Derby area where they built a home on Black Rock, part of the Lindsey Beach area. In 1991 he was elected to the board of selectmen for the town of Derby and served in that position for six years. He was chairman of the board in 1996, when he resigned because of a heart attack. He also served the town of Derby as a justice of the peace and second constable. He was founder and owner of Black Rock Apiary, producing, selling, and shipping honey all over the world. He was a member of Memphremagog Lodge No. 65 of Masons in Newport, serving as master in 1995. He was a member of Cleveland Chapter of the Royal Arch, the Orleans Council, and Malta Commandery No. 10. He was the secretary and treasurer of all of the York Rite Bodies of Newport. He was a member of the Red Cross of Constenen, the Order of the Sword, and the New England York Rite College. He leaves his wife of 54 years, Janet, of Derby; a daughter, Muriel "Missy" Orr-Ryan of Seattle, Washington; sons: Paul John Orr and his wife, Dorothy, of Ludlow, Massachusetts, Lindsay Dickinson Orr and his wife, Angela, of Eustis, Florida, and Richard Orr and his wife, Mary, of Longmeadow, Massachusetts; granddaughters: Meredith Ryan, Elizabeth Orr, Christine Orr, and Bridget Orr; a brother, Elmer "Toby" Orr of Irasburg; and a sister, Pauline St. Armand, of Hudson, Massachusetts. He was predeceased by one sister and four brothers. Visiting hours will be held Friday, November 4, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Darling Hill Road in Newport from 6 to 8 p.m. Members of Memphremagog Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons No. 65 will conduct a Masonic service at 7 p.m., followed by the Lakeside Chapter Order of the Eastern Star service. , 52, of Westfield died Monday, October 17, 2005, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Cambridge. Mr. Pfenning was born September 30, 1953, in Rutland, a son of Phyllis (Carr) and Wilbur Pfenning. He was a 1971 graduate of Rutland High School and graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology, where he received an associate's degree in art in 1973. He earned his Eagle Scout Award and received awards from the Outward Bound program. His great love was the great outdoors and everything in it. He loved life, he loved music, and he loved his children most of all. He was employed as a production associate at IBM in Essex Junction. He is survived by his mother, Phyllis Carr Barnard, of Pittsford; by two sons, Joshua Pfenning of Auburn, Maine, and Forrest Pfenning of South Royalton; by three daughters: Samantha Norman and her husband, Neil, of Florida, Willow Pfenning of Orleans, and Iris Smith of Morgan; by four grandchildren: Dalton Edwards, Cassidy Pfenning, Jacob Norman, and Matthew Pfenning; by a brother, Leslie W. , 75, of Island Pond died in Derby on Tuesday, October 18, 2005. Mr. Dubois was born on June 7, 1930, a son of Joseph E. and Lydia (Henry) Dubois. He was a graduate of Brighton High School. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of Korea. He worked as a clerk for Grand Trunk Railroad, retiring after 35-plus years. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Island Pond Random Post No. 2309 and the Island Pond Historical Society. He enjoyed going to his camp, called Mountain Dew, in Island Pond, where the family spent many enjoyable gatherings, along with gatherings at the family's lakeside home. He just plain enjoyed the outdoors with many different activities. He was a very good husband, father, and friend and was always ready to help others. He was the ever-loving pepere to his grandchildren. On October 6, 1956, he married Lorraine "Mikey" Lyon, who survives him. On August 20, 1960, she married Charles L. Berthiaume, who predeceased her September 25, 1987. She was a graduate of Bishop DeGoesbriand Hospital School of Nursing in Burlington. After two years as night supervisor for DeGoesbriand Hospital she returned to Newport where she was employed by the late Dr. Schurman and the former Broadview General Hospital until it closed. She is survived by a sister, Gertrude M. Fontaine, and her husband, Lawrence, of Derby; by a brother-in-law, Louis Berthiaume, and his wife, Joan, of Westfield by several nieces and nephews; and by a very dear friend and neighbor, Theresa Daigle, who cared for her in later years. She was predeceased by three brothers: Earle, Nelson, and Maynard Cheney; and by a sister Edna Liberty. , 90, of Newport Center died peacefully October 22, 2005, in Newport. Mrs. Parker was born July 13, 1915, in Brandon, a daughter of John and Ethel (Ryder) Horton. On May 24, 1941, she married Russell Parker, who predeceased her in 1968. She attended schools in Brandon and graduated from the University of Vermont in 1938. She taught school in south Newport for a short time in a one-room schoolhouse. She was town clerk in Newport Center from 1955 until March 3, 1981, for a total of 26 years. She was also a lister at one time and was very active in town affairs. She played the organ and prepared communion for many years for the United Methodist Church. She also enjoyed cooking for church suppers and for friends and neighbors in the community. She held memberships with the Rural Carrier Auxilary for over 50 years and Home Dem for 29 years. She was a 50-year member with American Legion Auxilary Post No. 21 of Newport and the World War I Auxilary. She also held memberships with the WSCS club of the church, North Country Hospital Auxilary, Memphremagog Historical Society, and the Old Stone House Museum of Brownington. She enjoyed traveling, knitting, sewing, and doing cross-stitch. She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Parker of Derby and Joan Champagne of Durham, North Carolina; by her grandchildren Robert Chainey of Allen, Texas, and Bridget Champagne of Durham; and by by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Chesley Horton and Charles Hoskison. Funeral services were held October 25 at the Newport Center Methodist Church with the Reverend Carl Shoemaker and Reverend Michael DeSena officiating. Interment will follow in the Newport Center Cemetery. of Southington, Connecticut, who died August 29, 2005, at the age of 88, will be held at the East Craftsbury Cemetery on Friday, November 4, at 1 p.m. Mr. Smith was born in Hardwick, a son of the late Andrew and Eleanor (Mason) Smith. He leaves his wife, Dorothy Paterson Smith; two daughters, Frances Cameron and Joanne Douglas, both of Connecticut; two sisters, Earline Atkins and Helen Hayford; a granddaughter; great-grandchildren; and other extended family.
