, 76, of Brownington died in Newport on Friday, September 30, 2005. Mr. Dewing was born in Charleston on September 6, 1929, a son of Leo and Lila (Buck) Dewing. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of Korea. He worked as a supervisor at Ethan Allen. He was a member of American Legion Orleans Post No. 23. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, loved sports, and was a devout New York Yankees fan. He was a member of Community Circle and enjoyed the gambling trips to Montréal. On October 24, 1964, he married Denise Brosseau, who survives him. He is also survived by his children: Linda Gibson of Brownington, Jeffrey Dewing and his wife, Yvette, of West Glover, and Paula Hoyt and her husband, Ron, of Orleans; by his grandchildren: Michael Lane, Adam Lane, Dylan Dewing, Kaleb Gibson, Zachary Dewing, Jacob Dewing, and Lily Hoyt; by his brother Russell Dewing of Florida; by his sister Charlotte Leach of Orleans; and by nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Winston and Kenneth. Funeral services were held October 4 at a funeral home in Newport with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. Interment followed at Pleasantview Cemetery in Orleans with full military honors. , 83, of Newport Center died in Newport on Monday, September 26, 2005. Mrs. Lacross was born in Newport Center on July 25, 1922, a daughter of Raymond E. Sr. and Jane (Lawson) Norris. On August 14, 1943, she married Kent Lacross, who survives her. She was a member of the Methodist church of Newport Center, where she worked on many church suppers. She and her husband lived and farmed for many years in the area. She loved swimming, skating, gardening, and cooking. She spent many falls traveling with her husband to each fair to eat a hot dog. She, her husband, their son Larry, and many friends enjoyed mudding, as they had a winch. Besides her husband of 62 years, she is survied by her son Larry Lacross and his wife, Debbie Sylvester-Lacross, of Lowell; by her niece Sheryl Baraw of Newport; by her stepgrandchildren: Paul Tetreault of Jay, Dawn Tetreault of Jay, Christine Russell of Troy, Tonya Langmaid of Lowell, and Sonya Rooney of Lowell; and by eight stepgreat-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother Raymond Norris Jr.; and by her sister Beverly Allen. A memorial service was held September 30 at a Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. , 92, of Derry, New Hampshire, formerly of Newton, New Hampshire, died July 6, 2005, at Pleasant Valley Nursing Center. Mrs. Hellesen was born in Hatchachubbi, Alabama, a daughter of the late David and Ruth (Yarborough) Rutherford, and graduated from the local high school. A resident of Barton from 1951 to 1995, she was the former co-owner of the the Ben Franklin Store of Barton from 1958 to 1975. She resided at Packer Meadows in Newton from 1995 to 2001. She was a member of the Barton Methodist Church, the Barton Women's Improvement Society, the Committee for Federal Housing Grants, the Orleans Country Club, and the Barton Country Club. The wife of the late Dr. Thorvald "Scotty" Hellesen, who died in 2002, she is survived by a son, James Hellesen, and his wife, Doris, of Londonderry, New Hampshire; by a daughter, Sara Reoch, and her husband, Ambrose, of Vancouver, British Columbia; by four grandchildren: Jennifer and Jamie Hellesen of Londonderry and Michael and Lindsay Reoch of Vancouver; and by several nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held October 2 at Brookside Chapel and Funeral Home in Plaistow, New Hampshire.

, 86, of Derby died in Lebanon, New Hampshire, on Friday, September 30, 2005. Mr. Etheze was born in Montréal, Quebec, on October 12, 1918, a son of Joseph and Margaret (Foy) Etheze. He worked as a chef in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He owned and operated the Miss Newport Diner for 12 years. During his retirement he worked as a meat cutter at the Derby Village Store until he was 82 years old. He was a member of St. Edward's Catholic Church. He was a semi-professional baseball player in his younger years. He was an avid reader, liked to keep busy, and enjoyed spending time with his family. On October 6, 1941, he married Charlotte Hill, who predeceased him on March 3, 1986. He is survived by his children: Gail Zahares and her husband, Wayne, of Merrimack, New Hampshire, Jean Etheze of Newington, Connecticut, Cathy Clark of Lyndonville, Julie Hannon and her husband, Luke, of Leesburg, Virginia, and James Etheze and his wife, Cathy, of Morgan; by his grandchildren: Terry Perdikes, Todd Zahares, Kevin Clark, Amanda Hannon, Austin Hannon, Ryan Etheze, and Matthew Etheze; by his great-grandchildren: LiahPerdikes, Chloe Perdikes, Joshua Perdikes, Adrienne Clark, and Sierra Zahares; by his sisters: Helene Rogerson of Enosburg Falls, Margaret Caouette of Island Pond, and Kathleen Twofoot of Island Pond. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated October 5 at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Derby Line with the Reverend Yvon Royer officiating. , 72, of Newport died in Newport on Tuesday, September 27, 2005. Mr. Mortland was born in Camden, New Jersey, on May 29, 1933. He retired from Sacred Heart High School, where he had worked as a janitor for 15 years. Following his retirement he worked as a janitor at the Emory Hebard State Office Building and then for the Area Agency on Aging, working on job placements. He enjoyed riding his rascal scooter. He is survived by his companion of 32 years, Anna Hess, of Newport. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. , 81, of St. Johnsbury and formerly of Burke Hollow, died Tuesday evening, October 4, 2005, in St. Johnsbury, following a long illness. Mrs. Holmes was born in West Charleston, a daughter of Oren and Della (Cushman) Bowen. On October 22, 1943, she married Roscoe Holmes, who predeceased her on May 6, 2001. She was a schoolteacher and taught in several schools in the area over the years, including Brownington Elementary School, East Charleston School, Jay School, and Irasburg Elementary School. She also taught at the Head Start program. She enjoyed playing the piano, gardening, and reading. She is survived by six children: Joyce Holmes of Burlington, Amaryllis Sheltra and her husband, Reginald, of Indiantown, Florida, Roscoe Holmes Jr. of Del Ray Beach, Florida, Reginald Holmes and his wife, Laurel, of Sutton, Dean Holmes and his wife, Lisa Irwin, of Seattle, Washington, and Bernard Holmes of Lyndonville; by 11 grandchildren; and by several great-grandchildren. , 72, of St. Johnsbury died in St. Johnsbury on Tuesday, October 4, 2005. Mr. Santaw was born June 15, 1933, the son of Alfred and Mary (LaFlame) Santaw. He was a cook at Bricketts Restaurant in St. Johnsbury. He also cooked at the Royal Restaurant in Newport, the Hotel Reba Restaurant in North Troy, and at several other restaurants in the area. He is survived by his brothers: Alfred and his wife, Shirley, and Paul, Robert, and Mike and his wife, Mary, all of North Troy; by his sisters Theresa Kelley and her husband, Donald, of Orleans and Dora Crete and her husband, Roger, of Connecticut; and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers: Orville, William, and Willard: and by his sister Madeline Dillon. Funeral services were held October 7 at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel in Newport. Interment took place at the North Troy Village Cemetery October 10. , 55, of Newport died in Lebanon, New Hampshire, on Friday, October 7, 2005. Mr. Streeter was born in Newport on February 23, 1950, a son of Robert and Esther (Bishop) Streeter. He was a volunteer driver for Rural Community Transportation for 17 years. He was a member of the Bobbin Mill Players and enjoyed playing the violin and fiddle at local nursing homes. He was a member of the Newport Nazarene Church and Cars of Yesteryear. He loved his red 1987 Chevy Cavalier convertible and drove it in many parades. On January 8, 1982, he married Evette Ford, who survives him. He is also survived by his son Daniel Streeter of Newport; by his brother David Streeter of Derby, his aunt Flora Rodier of Newport; and by his cousins Charlotte Rivard and Natalie Carter, both of Newport. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 16, at the Newport Nazarene Church at 3 p.m. with the Reverend Paul Prince officiating. , 76, of Morgan died while vacationing with family and friends on Nantucket, Massachusetts, on September 14, 2005. Mr. Phillips and family had vacationed on Nantucket for many years. He was fortunate to enjoy five perfect days on the island, visiting his favorite places with a special friend. He was born on January 7, 1929, a son of George Phillips Sr. and Mary Weston, formerly of Buffalo, New York. He was very fond of his grandmother Lydia M. Weston of Buffalo and Niagara-on-the-Lake, New York. He enjoyed frequent visits with her. He attended the Nichols School of Buffalo and the Eagle Brook School, later graduating from the Brooks School of North Andover, Massachusetts. He attended the University of Vermont, studying agriculture, prior to completing service in the United States Army. He enjoyed both the rigors and fellowship of military service. While serving in the armed forces, he met and married Terry Faulkner of Richmond, Virginia, in 1954. They celebrated their fiftieth anniversary last year with friends and relatives. He was an avid and accomplished photographer, developing his skills early in his youth providing services to the Burlington Police Department. Following college, he continued his love of agriculture, working on farms both in Vermont and New York. He had worked on farms from the age of 13 and continued this into his adulthood. He had also gained respect while living for a number of years at Treemont in Lexington, Virginia, where he constructed a shop engaged in the repair and refinishing of furniture. He considered himself privileged to have repaired a couch owned by General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. He was well-known in Vermont for his philanthropy, supporting many organizations including Vermont Public Radio, the Vermont Historical Society, the Nantucket Historical Society, Indoor Recreation of Orleans County, and other endeavors that sought to advance the public good. In his later years, he enjoyed the management of the farm in Morgan that he named Hidden Creek, a game preserve and conservation area. He leaves his wife, Terry Faulkner Phillips; and his son Charles Weston Phillips Jr. and his wife, Gwyn, and two grandchildren, Sophia and Kyle, all of San Francisco, California. He was predeceased by his daughter Terry Phillips, affectionately known as "Little T." She loved horses and was an accomplished rider. He is also survived by his brother George F. Phillips Jr. of Buffalo.
Irwin Alton "Sonny" White Jr.

, 66, a longtime Greensboro resident, died unexpectedly Tuesday, October 4, 2005. Mr. White was born November 24, 1938, in Greensboro, a son of the late Irwin A. and Beatrice (Rogers) White Sr. He attended Greensboro public schools and graduated from Greensboro High School in 1955. On July 14, 1957, he married Gloria B. Basford in Greensboro. He entered the U.S. Air Force on August 1, 1957, in Manchester, New Hampshire. He served his country in the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Washington State. He was honorably discharged on February 8, 1960, at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California. In his younger years he worked on the family farm in Greensboro and was a farmhand for Alfred Lanphear in Hardwick. For more than 37 years he was employed at Ethan Allen Manufacturing in Orleans. In 1998 he and his wife purchased Gram & Gramps Snack Bar on Route 14 in Hardwick. He was a master of the Caspian Lake Grange in Greensboro and a past member of the Orleans Volunteer Fire Department. He loved the time that he spent with his grandchildren. Other enjoyments included bowling, playing softball, watching the Red Sox and the Celtics, and driving for Rural Community Transportation. Survivors include his wife, Gloria, of Greensboro; a son, Michael White, of Midland, Texas; a daughter, Phyllis Crawford, and her husband, Todd, of Whitingham; four grandchildren: Baylee Scott Crawford and Jayden Irwin Crawford of Whitingham and Kevin White and Michael White of Midland; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Jimmy White. Funeral services were held October 8 at the Greensboro United Church of Christ with the Reverend Anthony Acheson of the Greensboro United Church of Christ and the Reverend Alice Ling of the First Parish Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, of East Derry, New Hampshire, officiating. Burial followed in the family lot in the East Craftsbury Cemetery.

She is survived by her daughters Betsy O'Connell and her husband, James, of Derry, New Hampshire, and MaryJane of Williston; by her grandsons Matthew and Christopher O'Connell; by her sister Mary Bagley of West Topsham; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas, in 1971; by her son Charles in 1972; and by her brother Thomas Austin. , 82, of Island Pond died Wednesday, October 5, 2005, in Newport. Mrs. Payeur was a daughter of Adelard and Clare (Rooney) Payeur and was born in North Stratford, New Hampshire, on November 27, 1922. She attended school in Island Pond and graduated from the Brightlook School of Nursing. She worked in Maine as a nurse for several years before moving back to Island Pond to take care of her mother and be near family members. She also worked at Derby Green until her retirement. She loved to travel throughout the United States with her mother as a traveling companion. She enjoyed knitting, much to the delight of her family and friends as receivers of her handiwork. She was also an avid Red Sox fan and a member of the Island Pond Historical Society and Brighton Alumni Association. She was predeceased by her parents; by brothers: William, Leo, Louis; and by a sister, Eleanor. She is survived by her nephew Robert Payeur and his wife, Sharon, of Waterford; by a foster nephew, Antonio Elie, of Concord; by several other nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and -nephews, and great-grand-nieces and -nephews. Funeral services were held October 8 at St. James Catholic Church in Island Pond with the Reverend William Morgan celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Interment followed in Lakeside Cemetery in Island Pond.

, 88, of Newport died in Newport on Monday, October 3, 2005. Mr. Skinner was born in North Adams, Massachusetts, on April 24, 1917. In 1949 he married Lucienne Provencher, who predeceased him in 1989. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He was in the Battle of the Bulge. He worked as a welder for Pratt & Whitney in Meriden, Connecticut, from which he retired. He then moved to Florida. He worked for a few years for Sears. He and his wife enjoyed camping and traveling. He was a family-oriented man who always made sure to see his brothers and sisters at least once a year. He and his companion, Frances, made several trips to Florida, where they both had homes. They went on several other trips as well. He is survived by his son Clarence Skinner and his wife, Robin, of Palm Bay, Florida; by his sister Katherine Crowe of Newport; by his longtime companion, Frances Rice, of Orleans; and by several nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Walter Skinner; and by his sisters Margaret Sherlaw and Rhoda Bickford. Funeral services were held October 7 at a funeral home in Newport with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. Interment followed at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in St. Johnsbury.

, 77, of Derby died peacefully October 7, 2005, in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Mr. Willis was born May 23, 1928, in Sutton, Quebec, a son of George and Louise (Hudson) Willis. On June 1, 1949, he married Iris Fletcher. He was a lineman for Citizens Utilities for many years, retiring in 1985. He enjoyed hunting, going to deer camp, and sugaring. He enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
