, 76, of Brownington, Vt., passed away in Newport on Friday, Sept. 30, 2005. He was born in Charleston on Sept. 6, 1929, the son of Leo and Lila (Buck) Dewing. Wendell served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of Korea. He worked as a supervisor at Ethan Allen. Wendall was a member of Community Circle and enjoyed their gambling trips to Montreal. He was a member of the American Legion Orleans Post # 23. Wendell enjoyed hunting and fishing, loved sports and was a devout Yankee fan. On Oct. 24, 1964, Wendell married the former Denise Brosseau, who survives him. He is also survived by his children, Linda Gibson of Brownington, Jeffrey Dewing and his wife Yvette of West Glover, and Paula Hoyt and her husband Ron of Orleans; his grandchildren, Michael Lane, Adam Lane, Dylan Dewing, Kaleb Gibson, Zachary Dewing, Jacob Dewing, and Lily Hoyt; his brother, Russell Dewing of Florida; his sister, Charlotte Leach of Orleans; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Winston and Kenneth. , of St. Johnsbury and longtime Fairbanks employee, passed away peacefully at home Thursday afternoon, Sept. 29, 2005, at the age of 81. He was born in St. Johnsbury on Dec. 11, 1923, one of six children born to Victor and Catherine (Radford) Douglas. During World War II Fred served in the Army Air Corps as a gunner on a B-17 bomber. He was stationed in Lavenham, England and flew many missions over Germany. Fred worked at Fairbanks for 38 years. He enjoyed playing golf at St. Johnsbury Country Club and was a member of VFW Post #793. He is survived by his wife, Pat (Collins) Douglas (1396 Main St. 05819); son Michael and his wife Chris of St. Johnsbury (22 Morgan Circle 05819); daughter Deborah Smith and her husband Dennis of St. Johnsbury (389 Cliff St. 05819); four grandchildren: Brian and Joshua Douglas, Rebecca and Jordan Smith; one brother: Raymond Douglas of Lyndonville; three sisters: Catherine Warrell and her husband Ralph of St. Johnsbury, Marion Parsons of Dover, N.H., and Madeline Easter of St. Johnsbury; aunt Marion Radford of St. Johnsbury; and nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church. Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. , 76, of Danville, Vt., died Friday, Sept. 30, 2005, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. She was born July 12, 1929, in Greensboro, the daughter of the late George E. and Grace (Speir) Rodger. She attended Greensboro public schools and Greensboro High School. On Oct. 23, 1946, she married Raymond Wesley Withers in Greensboro Bend. In her earlier years she stayed at home to care for her young children. She later worked at the Hardwick Knitwear, Slalom Skiwear Inc. in Newport and Ethan Allen Inc. Orleans Division. Frances was a member of the Danville United Methodist Church. She enjoyed reading, crocheting and watching wildlife. Survivors include five children, Jo-Ann Davio and her husband, Dennis, of Milton, Raymond Withers Jr. of Stannard, Jacalyn Elliott and her husband, Earle, of Danville, Connie J. Withers and her companion Ronald Rich of Stannard, and Jonathan Withers and his wife, Sara, of Walden; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Gordon Rodger of Richford; and a sister, Irene Dezan of Marshalls Creek, Pa.; two sisters-in-law, Ione Norway of Sheffield and Betty Withers of Wheelock; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond, Dec. 27, 1980; and her companion, Wallace Allen, Sept. 3, 2005. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m. at the Danville United Methodist Church with the Rev. Hank Cheney officiating. Burial will be in the family lot in the Stannard Cemetery in Stannard. passed away at the home of her ex-husband and best friends Chris and Cindy Ely on Sunday, Oct. 2, 2005. Sarah was 35 years old and died from injuries received in a motorcycle accident on Aug. 13, 2005. Sarah had most recently resided in Littleton, N.H., but prior to that, resided for many years in North Danville, Vt., where she owned and operated the North Danville Pet Hotel. Sarah was a licensed practical nurse who did insurance physicals for many years, allowing her to enjoy the countryside of Vermont and New Hampshire, which she loved very much. Sarah also loved animals, dancing, going for rides on her motorcycle, spending time with her friends and family and enjoying all that life has to offer. Sarah will be greatly missed and is survived by her parents, Gordon and Kathy Jarvis of Waits River, Vt.; her daughter, Paige Ely of St. Johnsbury, Vt.; brother, John Merrick of Barre, Vt.; sister, Robin Bryant; brother, Leonard Merrick of Lexington, Ky.; stepbrothers, Michael Jarvis of Essex Jct., Vt., and Tim Jarvis of Barre, Vt.; stepsisters, Kathy Rocheleau of Colchester, Vt., and Shari Stewart of Grand Isle, Vt.; along with numerous nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Sarah is also survived by her loving fiancee, Clark Givoni of Lisbon, N.H.; and her faithful dog, Sydney. Many friends and motorcycle brothers will miss Sarah. She will be laid to rest at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in a casket made with love by her brother John, niece Cassie and nephew Johnny. The Merrick, Ely and Jarvis families would like to thank the entire staff from DHMC for the wonderful care given Sarah during her stay there. , 29, of Hardwick, Vt., died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, in Ramadi, Iraq, while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Born in Berlin on June 18, 1976, he was the son of Kevin and Vickie (Wells) McLaughlin. On Aug. 5, 2000, he married the former Nicole Renee MacIver in West Bolton. Scott was a 1994 graduate of Mount Mansfield Union High School and enlisted in the U.S. Marines. Following his discharge, Scott worked as a cutting technician for Cadcut in Middlesex where he was currently employed. Continuing his military service, Scott joined the Army National Guard, Company C, 1st Battalion of the 172nd Armed Regiment of Morrisville with whom he was currently serving in Iraq as members of Task Force Saber. Known for his quick smile and gentle, kindhearted spirit, Scott was most at home in the woods enjoying hunting and fishing. He cherished his wife Nicole, their children Tyler and Molly and the time spent with family and friends. Church played an integral role in Scott's life, attending with his family at Living Hope Wesleyan Fellowship (formerly the Standard Church) in Waterbury Center. Scott is survived by his wife, Nicole, and their children, Molly Marlene McLaughlin and Tyler Scott McLaughlin, all of Hardwick; his father and mother, Kevin and Vickie McLaughlin of West Bolton; his paternal grandmother, Esther McLaughlin of Cincinnati, Ohio; his sister, Shalena Hansen and her husband Scott of West Bolton; his bother, John P. McLaughlin and his wife Patricia Gray-McLaughlin of Underhill; as well as a large and loving extended family. Funeral services were held from Hunger Mountain Christian Assembly, Route 100, Waterbury Center, on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 1 p.m., with full military honors accorded. , of 79 Harrison Ave., St. Johnsbury, Vt., passed away Saturday evening, Oct. 1, 2005, at the age of 87. He was born in North Danville on Oct. 7, 1917, the son of William and Edith (McDowell) Bedor. He was predeceased by his wife Jeanne (Camire) on July 18, 1997. Richard was a former employee at St. Johnsbury Trucking and Laperle Construction. He also farmed in the Spaulding neighborhood from 1944 until 1960. He lived in Vernon, Conn., from 1966 until 1985, where he worked at Aceto Construction and Moser Farms Dairy. The Bedors later moved to St. Petersburg, Fla. Wherever he resided, he was an active member of the Roman Catholic Church. Richard had a wide variety of interests, which included traveling throughout the United States and Canada, square-dancing, and playing cards with family and friends. He dedicated much of his time to charitable organizations such as Meals on Wheels and was tireless in his efforts to assist the elderly in fulfilling their personal needs. Richard's greatest legacy is his family. He was a devoted husband and father, and a very loving grandfather, great-grandfather, son, brother and friend. He is survived by four sons, Richard Jr. and his wife Anita of St. Johnsbury, Wayne and his wife Donna of Durango, Colo., Gary and his wife Marie of Ellington, Conn., and Robert and his wife Rondi of Blue Bell, Pa.; 10 grandchildren, Tracie, Lisa, Kelly and Jeff; Jonathan; Lyndsey and Jeremy; and Drew, Chris and Evan; six great-grandchildren, Gabrielle, Lucas, Zach, Allie, Jared and Aiden; three brothers, Henry Bedor, William Bedor and Peter Norton; two sisters, Alice Sampson and Helen Stickney; several nieces and nephews; and his wife Jeanne's family. Dorothy (Williams) Sargent

, of Lee, N.H., died at Exeter Hospital on Sept. 27, 2005, after a long illness. She was 95 years old. Mrs. Sargent was the widow of Theodore Dearborn Sargent, former St. Johnsbury School Superintendent. She had been a St. Johnsbury resident for 47 years before moving to Kirkwood Corners in Lee, N.H., a long-term care facility closer to her daughters. Born Sept. 22, 1910, in Meriden, Conn., she was the daughter of the late Harry Eustace and Mary Jane (Stevenson) Williams Barr. Her father died when she was 4 years old, at which time her mother moved the family to South Ryegate and then to Prince Edward Island, Canada, to be near maternal relatives. After three years in Canada, her family moved back to South Ryegate. She attended Woodsville, N.H., High School and graduated from Wells River High School in 1929. After her graduation from Concord Business College in Concord, N.H., she found employment in Medford, Mass. She moved back to Vermont upon obtaining a position as secretary to the Caledonia/Orange County School Superintendent where she worked until 1936. She then moved to Chelsea where she was employed until 1940 as secretary/treasurer of the Orange County Agriculture Program, part of the Farm Bureau. While working in Chelsea she met Theodore Sargent, to whom she was married for 57 years. Mrs. Sargent loved her home, family and friends. She took pleasure in cooking and was known as a meticulous housekeeper. Mrs. Sargent was a helpmate to her husband throughout his career. During the early years of their marriage, she frequently filled in as his unpaid secretary. She enjoyed her flower garden, sewing, knitting, embroidery and travel. For 20 years, she spent winters with her husband in Mt. Dora, Fla. Mrs. Sargent was an active church member in each of the communities in which she lived. She belonged to the North Congregational Church, United Workers, the St. Johnsbury Women's Club, AARP and the Retired Teachers Association. She volunteered at the Northeast Regional Hospital and served on the board of directors of the Northeast Mental Health Association. She is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann Limric of Newmarket, N.H., and Brenda Sargent of Durham, N.H.; and four grandchildren, Steven Limric and his wife Toni of Glastonbury, Conn., Scot Limric and his wife Kathryn of Madbury, N.H., Seth Mleziva of Watertown, Mass., and Sarah Mleziva of Acton, Mass.; two sisters, Vera Meyette and her husband William of Woodsville, N.H., and Gladys Boyd of East Thetford; a sister-in-law, Virginia Williams of South Ryegate; six great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces. Her stepfather, Claude Barr; and brothers, Harry Williams and Robert Williams, predeceased her. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m., at the North Congregational, Main Street, St. Johnsbury. A committal service will be held at Pinehurst Cemetery, South Ryegate, following the memorial service. , 72, a lifelong Littleton, N.H., resident, passed away Saturday, Oct. 1, 2005, following a brief illness. The son of Medrick F. and Lillian (Burgess) Champagne, he was born Nov. 20, 1932, in Littleton. Carl was proud to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II, and married Carlene Lucas. She predeceased him Jan. 28, 1995. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. Carl was employed by Connors and Hoffman Footwear, and owned his own Shoe retail outlet on Main Street in Littleton and was an avid golfer. He was also a baseball coach for many years and a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He especially enjoyed spending time at hunting camp. Carl is survived by a son, Carl Champagne II and his wife Ann; grandchildren, Sara, Katie and Alexis; a sister, Ethel Cooper and her husband Don, all of Littleton. , 85, of North Kirby, died suddenly Tuesday morning, Oct. 4, 2005, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. He was born May 9, 1920, in Lyndonville, Vt., son of the late Paul A. and Ruby L. (Page) Houghton. He was schooled in Lyndonville and was a member of Lyndon Institute's Class of 1938. Phil served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army, serving overseas with the 20th Armored Division in France, Germany, Belgium and Holland. On Sept. 1, 1951, he married Dorothy E. "Dot" Gero. They lived many years in North Kirby on the farm they worked raising replacement heifers and crops. Phil also worked at Vermont Tap & Die in Lyndonville for 17 years before expanding his farming operation to milking his fine herd of Holstein cattle. Known for helping his community, Phil served the town of Kirby as a former selectman and lister for many years. He enjoyed his family, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Hunting, working with horses, traveling and camping when they found the time also brought him great pleasure. Survivors include his four children, Sandi Aldrich of Burke Hollow, Steve Houghton of North Kirby and his special companion Susan Lumbra of St. Johnsbury, Lisle Houghton and his wife Vicki of Waterford, and Daniel Houghton and his wife Julie of North Kirby; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Polly Taylor and her husband Albert of South Kirby; his in-laws, Beryl Houghton of Lyndon, Marge and Larry Cassady of Lyndonville, Ken Gero of Albuquerque, NM, Lucy and Carlton Castel of Florida, Roy and Millie Gero of Barton, and Pat and Butch Forget of Lyndonville; nieces; nephews; and several close friends. Phil was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Dorothy "Dot" Houghton, on June 11, 2002; and his brother, Mickey Houghton, this last spring. Edward was a cook at Bricketts Restaurant in St. Johnsbury. He also formerly cooked at the Royal Restaurant in Newport, the Hotel Reba Restaurant in North Troy and several others in the area. He is survived by his brothers, Alfred and his wife Shirley, Paul, Robert, and Mike and his wife Mary, all of North Troy; his sisters, Theresa Kelley and her husband Donald of Orleans, and Dora Crete and her husband Roger of Connecticut; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Orville, William and Willard; and by his sister, Madeline Dillon. , 66, a longtime Greensboro resident, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Oct. 4, 2005. He was born Nov. 24, 1935, in Greensboro. The son of the late Irwin A. and Beatrice (Rogers) White Sr. He attended Greensboro public schools and graduated from Greensboro High School in the Class of 1955. On July 14, 1957, he married Gloria B. Basford in Greensboro. Sonny entered the U.S. Air Force on Aug. 1, 1957, in Manchester, N.H. He served his country in the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and the state of Washington. He was honorably discharged on Feb. 8, 1960, at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, Calif. In his younger years, he worked on the family farm in Greensboro and was a farm hand for Alfred Lanphear in Hardwick. For more than 37 years, he was employed at Ethan Allen Manufacturing, Orleans Division. In 1998, he and his wife purchased Gram & Gramps Snack Bar on Route 14 in Hardwick. He was Master of the Caspian Lake Grange in Greensboro and a past member of the Orleans Volunteer Fire Department. He loved the time that he spent with his grandchildren. Other enjoyments included bowling, softball, the Red Sox, Celtics and driving for RCT. Survivors include his wife, Gloria of Greensboro; a son, Michael White of Midland, Texas; a daughter, Phyllis Crawford of Whitingham; four grandchildren; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Jimmy White. Visiting hours will be held Friday evening from 6-9 p.m. at the Northern Vermont Funeral Home, 60 Elm St., Hardwick. , 82, of Island Pond, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2005, in Newport. Gertrude was the daughter of Adelard and Clare (Rooney) Payeur and was born in North Stratford, N.H., on Nov. 27, 1922. She attended school in Island Pond and graduated from the Brightlook School of Nursing. She worked in Maine as a nurse for several years before moving back to Island Pond to take care of her mother and be near family members. She also worked at the Derby Green Nursing Home until retirement. She loved to travel throughout the United States with her mother as a traveling companion. She enjoyed knitting, much to the delight of her family and friends as receivers of her handiwork. She was also an avid Red Sox fan and a member of the Island Pond Historical Society and Brighton Alumni Association. Gertrude was predeceased by her parents; brothers, William, Leo and Louis; and a sister, Eleanor. She is survived by her nephew, Robert Payeur and his wife Sharon of Waterford; a foster nephew, Antonio Elie of Concord; as well as several other nieces and nephews, grand and great-grandnieces and nephews. , 81, of St. Johnsbury, formerly of Burke Hollow, passed away Tuesday evening, Oct. 4, 2005, in St. Johnsbury following a long illness. She was born in West Charleston, Vt., the daughter of Oren and Della (Cushman) Holmes. On Oct. 22, 1943, she married Roscoe Holmes, who predeceased her on May 6, 2001. Thelma was a school teacher and taught in several schools in the area over the years. They include Brownington Elementary, East Charleston School, Jay School and Irasburg Elementary School. She also taught at the Head Start program. Her hobbies included playing the piano, gardening and reading. Thelma is survived by six children, Joyce Holmes of Burlington, Amaryllis Sheltra and her husband Reginald of Indian Town, Fla., Roscoe Holmes Jr. of Del Ray Beach, Fla., Reginald Holmes and his wife Laurel of Sutton, Vt., Dean Holmes and his wife Lisa Irwin of Seattle, Wash., and Bernard Holmes of Lyndonville; 11 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. , of Haverhill, N.H., died Oct. 4, 2005, at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, N.H., surrounded by his family after a long battle with cancer. He was born on Nov. 2, 1930, in Woodsville, N.H., son of Wilfred D. and Esther A. (Cross) Boutin. He was a lifelong resident and self-employed logger. He enjoyed the outdoors, where he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and vegetable and flower gardening. He took an active role in making sure the Pleasant View Trailer Park, where he lived, was properly maintained and repaired. He also served many years with the Woodsville National Guard. He was predeceased by one son, Michael Leon Boutin, on Nov. 23, 1983. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 56 years, Barbara Joan "Dodie" (Pecor) Boutin of Haverhill; two sons, David R. Boutin and his wife Melinda of Benton, and William J. Boutin of Haverhill; three daughters, Joan L. Bruce and her husband Carroll of North Haverhill, Deborah J. Stimson and her husband Wallace of Bath, and Brenda A. Martel and her husband Gary of Haverhill; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one brother, Delton J. Boutin, and one sister, Priscilla B. Parker and her husband Walter, both of East Haverhill; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A calling hour will be held on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005, from 7-8 p.m., at the Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch St., Woodsville, N.H. The funeral will be held on Friday, Oct. 7, at 1 p.m., at the Ricker Funeral Home. The Rev. Steven Seminerio will officiate. Burial will follow at the No. 6 Cemetery in East Haverhill.
