Theodore "Ted" Kambour
....show
, 85, of Barton died April 27, 2005. Mr. Kambour was born April 1, 1920, in Seekonk, Massachusetts, the eldest child of Theodore Kambour Sr. and Mary (Charlton) Kambour. The family moved to Montpelier in the mid-1920s where he attended school until he graduated from Montpelier High School in 1937. Ted enrolled in the School of Agriculture at the University of Vermont in the fall of 1938. He was a Reserve Officers' Training Corps cadet during his short time at the university. Certain events and the powerful allure of the Northeast Kingdom drew the family to Barton in 1940. Ted's 4F draft status prevented him from serving with his friends in the terrible conflict that was World War II. He worked long hours in the machine shops of Springfield through 1942 and 1943. Ted enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1943 and graduated from MIT in 1946 with a bachelor of science in civil engineering. He then worked for the Department of Soil Conservation, first in Vermont, subsequently in New Hampshire until 1954. Ted and Margaret (Beattie) Kambour were married June 24, 1950, in St. Johnsbury. They would have celebrated their fifty-fifth wedding anniversary this year. In 1954 Ted hooked up with the Vermont State Highway Department, for whom he worked the remainder of his professional life. Building the roads and bridges in his beloved Vermont, interacting with his colleagues and the contractors he supervised - all of this was a source of great enjoyment and satisfaction to him. At the time of his retirement in 1985 he had earned the enormous liking, admiration, and respect of those same peers. Ted enjoyed fishing, cards, music, board games, swimming, chess, and reading, and he was a nonpareil puzzle master. He had a deep love for the outdoors, and had an especially profound and abiding affection for his cottage at Shadow Lake in Glover. Those who survive him will never forget him; to have our lives touched by him was a blessing that cannot be measured. Ted is survived by his wife, Margaret, of Barton; by his son Peter, Pete's wife, Carol, and grandson Nicholas, all of Westford, Massachusetts; by son Jim of Barton; by son Tom of Barton; and by son Ted III, his wife, Sandy, and grandson Cory, all of Lyndon. Ted was predeceased by his sister Ruth. His sister Eleanor survives him and lives in Durham, North Carolina. He is also survived by various nieces, nephews, and cousins throughout the Eastern United States.
