, 78, a longtime resident of Newport, peacefully died on Monday, January 3, 2005, at North Country Hospital with his family by his side. Mr. Isabelle was born in Barre on August 31, 1926, son of the late Stanislas and Marie-Ange (Brousseau) Isabelle. During World War II, he volunteered for duty in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served proudly in the Pacific Theater as a member of the Fourth Marine Division and was an Iwo Jima campaign survivor. In 1950 he married the love of his life, Jacqueline "Jackie" Toussaint, of St. Johnsbury. They recently celebrated 54 years of marriage and have been lovingly involved in the raising and nurturing of their ten children, 28 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. He was a man of faith throughout his life. During a career in business and later in sales with Prudential Life Insurance from 1962 to 1970, he was always actively involved in his church at both the local and diocesan level. A fourth degree member in the Knights of Columbus, he also made time to volunteer as the treasurer of Catholic Central Elementary School in St. Johnsbury. His interest in and involvement with education continued from 1970 to 1982 as he assumed the responsibilities of business manager for the Sacred Heart School System in Newport. He was truly a role model for his family, his community, and the students under his care. He lived by the Marine Corps motto, "Semper fidelis - always faithful." He always reflected the highest standards of integrity and hard work. During his later years, he battled numerous illnesses and cancers with the same strength, courage, and fortitude he had demonstrated on the battlefield as a younger man. He was predeceased by his daughter Celeste in 1976 and later by his sister Cecile. He is survived by his loving wife, Jackie; by nine children: Christine Wolf and her husband, Philip, of Brownington, Claudette Schoolcraft and her husband, Gary, of Peacham, Marc Isabelle and his wife, Deborah, of Hamilton, New Jersey, Bernard Isabelle and his wife, Crystal, of Dalton, Massachusetts, Donald Isabelle and his wife, Carolle, of Pittsford, Brenda Isabelle of Derby, Brian Isabelle and his wife, Allyson, of Loveland, Colorado, Richard Isabelle and his wife, Constance, of Derby, and Suzanne Schmitz and her husband, James of Beavercreek, Ohio; by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; by four brothers: Edward Isabelle and his wife, Rose, of Agawam, Massachusetts, Hector Isabelle and his wife, Marilyn, of Barre, Ellis Isabelle and his wife, Jacqueline, of Barre, and Romeo Isabelle and his wife, Yvonne, of Barre; by one sister, Claire Bashaw, of Palm Bay, Florida; by sister-in-law Gloria Carlton and her husband, Jim, of St. Johnsbury; and by nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed. A Mass of Celebration of Mr. Isabelle's life and homecoming was held January 7 at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newport. , 77, of West Charleston died in Newport on Thursday, January 6, 2005. Mr. Brown was born in Brownington on May 3, 1927, a son of Charles Henry and Mildred (Lafoe) Brown. He served in the Merchant Marines. He worked at Union Butterfields for 39 years, retiring in 1989. He also worked for the Sheriff's Department from 1971 until 1992. After retirement he went to work for Jim Murphy doing flagging and traffic control at ADA Traffic Control and ADA Security. He was a member of American Legion Orleans Post No. 23 for 54 years, Moose Lodge St. Johnsbury Post No. 1779 for 23 years, Masonic Order Island Pond Lodge No. 44 for 46 years, Central Lodge Irasburg Post No. 62, and the Order of the Eastern Star Newport Lakeside Chapter No. 27 and the Island Pond North Star Chapter No. 25 since 1984. He was a regional umpire from 1953 to 2000. He coached the American Legion and Babe Ruth teams. In 1964 he and Jack Sloan started a Little League team in West Charleston, and in 1984 he started the Old-timers team and was its first president. He was a moderator for the town of Charleston for 30 years, a chairman for the cemetery commission, a second constable, president of the historical society for two years, and selectman for the last two years. He also taught a National Rifle Association safety course in Island Pond for two years. He was self-taught on the guitar at age 13 and started playing in the Radio Rangers Ranch Band around 1952. They played off and on at WIKE from the 1950s to the 1970s. He later continued playing at nursing homes and weddings. He also helped teach kids guitar at graded schools. He fought a courageous and long battle with cancer. He never complained but fought all the way. On August 6, 1948, he married Doris Austin, who survives him. He is also survived by his children: Faye and Ken Stocker of Newport, Linda and the late Brian Basford of Orleans, Gail Sheltra of Orleans, Blaine and Pearla Brown of Orleans, and Sherry and Dennis Ingalls of West Glover; by ten grandchildren; and by eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter Christine Brown on May 10, 2004, and by two brothers. Funeral services were held January 10 at a Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend Roger Fletcher and the Reverend David Lisner officiating. Spring interment will take place at the West Charleston Cemetery. , 81, of Hyde Park, a longtime resident of North Wolcott, died Thursday, January 6, 2005, at Copley Hospital in Morrisville. Mrs. Brown was born in Underhill on June 23, 1923, the daughter of Leo J. and Ethel (Metcalf) Butler. She attended graded school in Eden. On June 21, 1942, she married Edgar Brown. Together they raised their family in North Wolcott Village. She is survived by two sons, Ronald Brown of Johnson and Larry Brown of Hyde Park; by two daughters, Barbara Reed and her husband, Harvey, of Wolcott and Janet Boomhower and her husband, Terry, of Ways Mills, Quebec; by two brothers, Lawrence Butler and his wife, Lois, of West Topsham and Wayland Butler and his wife, Eleanor, of Topsham; by two sisters, Madalyne Huntington of Corinth and Virginia Thurston and her husband, Jason, of Corinth; by ten grandchildren; by 16 great-grandchildren; and by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Edgar, who died in August 1997; by six brothers: George, Leo "Cleve," Walter, Arland, Richard, and Francis Butler; and by a sister, Irene Ricker. A funeral service was held January 8 at the United Church of Craftsbury in Craftsbury Common with the Reverend Neil Carr officiating. Spring interment will be in the Craftsbury Village Cemetery. , loving and feisty at 91, died Monday, January 10, 2005. The centers of her life were family and faith. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack Duff, in 1968 and will be lovingly missed by her son John Duff and wife, Pat, of Spencer, Massachusetts; by her daughters, Susan Guilmette and her husband, Mark, of Barton; and Anne Lynch and her husband, Paul, of East Sandwich, Massachusetts, and Bradenton, Florida. Her grandchildren were a constant joy to her. They are Brian and Jodie Duff and their children Tyler and Noah of Indiana, Kevin and Ali Duff and their children, Jack and Audrey of Iowa, Laura and Steve Larose and their children Mitchell, Amanda, and Troy of Massachusetts, Christopher Duff of Massachusetts, Colleen and Patrick Heiden and their son, Liam of Massachusetts, and Katie Lynch of Washington, D.C. Mrs. Duff was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church for 41 years and generously gave her time as a religious education instructor as well as Eucharistic minister. She was a primary grade public school teacher in Hartford, Connecticut, and Worcester, Massachusetts. For the last three years she lived at Special Needs Unit of Maple Lane where she received care, respect, and so much love. She did keep them on their toes with her speedy walker. Arrangements are being made for a funeral in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Mrs. Cheney was born on June 10, 1931, in Orleans, a daughter of Archie and Mary (Johnson) Chilafoux. On January 23, 1947, she married Francis Cheney Sr., who survives her. She worked for Columbia Forest Products in the splicing and grading departments, Newport Plastics, as a waitress at the Royal Restaurant, and for Lowell Elementary School, where she prepared hot lunch. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, traveling, and having family gatherings. Besides her husband, Francis Cheney Sr., she is survived by her children: Francis Cheney Jr. and his wife, Donna, of Newport, Linda Caron and her husband, Alfred, of Troy, Mary Poulin of Newport, Dana Cheney and his wife, Kathy, of Newport, Bonnie Stone and her husband, Jim, of Irasburg, and Marie Cheney of Newport; by her grandchildren: Francis III, Christina, Jessica, Jordon, Lisa, Laurie, Joe, James, Tammy, Ryan, Angie, Dana, Joshua, Rodney, Rhonda, Tyra, Jaime, Brandy, Marc, and Michalea; by 27 great-grandchildren; by a sister, Evelyn Hurlbert, of Island Pond; and by several nieces and nephews. , 79, of Newport died in Newport on Monday, January 3, 2005. Mr. Britch was born in Newport on July 19, 1925, a son of William and Bertha (McKinney) Britch. On June 20, 1964, he married Dorothy (Sanville) Bullis, who predeceased him on September 9, 1975. He was employed by the former R.F. Hamblett Properties for many years and later retired from Bogner, Incorporated, as a maintenance worker. He was an avid fisherman on the Causeway bridge in Newport, and he enjoyed ice fishing. He also enjoyed salmon fishing in his younger years on Clyde Street in Newport. He enjoyed spending time at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall and on Main Street in Newport, socializing with his friends. , 87, of Newport died in Burlington on Saturday, January 8, 2005. Mr. Archer was born in Braintree on December 19, 1917, the son of Carl O. and Mildred (Holt) Archer. On April 16, 1937, he married Lena Laraway, who predeceased him on December 31, 1975. He was then united in marriage on August 14, 1977, to Arline LaBounty Wood, who predeceased him on October 4, 1987. He worked in veneer mills in Newport and Hancock for several years. Later he worked for the Canadian Pacific Railroad, from which he retired in 1976. He is survived by his daughters Margaret Kennison and her husband, Lesley, of Newport and Rachel Stevens and her husband, Nelson, of Newport; by his stepdaughter Janice Fournier and her husband, Lawrence, of Newport; by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and by nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his dog Hobo. He was predeceased by two sisters. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. , 79, of Newport, beloved husband of Jessie, passed away in White River Junction on Sunday, January 9, 2005. He was born in Newport on December 7, 1925, the son of Clarence and Mathilda (Hupe) Lantagne. On December 14, 1968 he married the former Jessie Hunter, who survives him. Mr. Lantagne served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of World War II. He worked as an engineer for the Central Pacific Railroad, retiring in 1990. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, gardening, socializing and playing cards. He was a member of the American Legion Newport Post number 21, and a lifetime member of the VFW Alfred Pepin Post number 798. Besides his wife, Mr. Lantagne is survived by his children, Reginald Lantagne and his wife, Tammi, of Newport Center, Randy Roberts and his wife, Ann, of Center Barnstead, New Hampshire, Shanda Powers of Coventry and Lynn Seguin of Derby; by his grandchildren, Alexis Lantagne, Kevin Lantagne, Barbara Powers, Jesse Roberts, and Lee Sequin; by his brothers, George and his wife, Josephine, of Newport, and Clarence and his wife, Delores, of Newport; by his sisters, Jeannette Reed and her husband, Bob, of Newport, and Marguerite Demers and her husband, John, of Massachusetts; by his sisters-in-law, Joyce Lantagne of Newport, and Esther Lantagne of Guildhall, Vermont; and by several nieces and nephews. She was born in Brownington on February 26, 1927, the daughter of Thomas Broome Sr. and Irene Perrier. She was married to Nelson Ora Bushaw in 1946. They had four children: Terry Dean (who predeceased her in 1966), Nelson Thomas of West Charleston, Daniel Lee of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Sandra Jane Morey of Adams, Massachusetts. Ms. Broome-Comeau resided in Adams from 1950 until 1980. She worked at Wall Street Shoe Co. in North Adams raised her children, and ran Colleen's Diner from 1967 until 1978 in Adams. She was overjoyed to become a grandmother in 1978 and a great-grandmother in 2000. She returned home to West Charleston in 1980. She managed M.J. Shoe Co. in Derby and cared for the elderly. She was a member and eventually president of the Charleston Historical Society for a number of years. She was a member of the Free Will Baptist Church, and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. Besides her children, she is survived by her mother, Irene Broome of Derby; by her sisters: Charlotte Knowles, Barbara Paronteau, Joanne Bowen, and Darlyn Caroll; by her grandchildren: Miranda Crandall, Tiffany Crandall, Dean Morey, and Justin Bushaw; and by her great-grandson Austin Oleskiewicz. She was predeceased by her father, Thomas Broome Sr., and by her siblings: Thomas Broome Jr., Grace Gaylord, Roberta Church, Beatrice Phaneuf, Carroll Broome, and Emile Broome. , 95, died Monday evening, January 10, 2005, at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, New York. Mrs. Brown had lived at Good Shepherd Fairview Home in Binghamton for nearly three years and was an active participant in many of the programs there. Family was her highest priority. She was a great correspondent to keep family in touch. She was a loyal Vermonter, a good teacher of over 35 years, and a special kind of musician who entertained many folks throughout her life. She was born in Orwell on her father's fiftieth birthday, the youngest child of six. She graduated from Vermont Academy, Castleton State College, and the University of Vermont. She taught in the Orwell area, then in Barton. She was active in many organizations, including the Order of Eastern Star, Barton United Church, Barton Public Library, Tuan Ti Christmas Club, the Retired Teachers Association, the Orleans County Historical Society, and the Area Agency on Aging senior meals program. Her persistence for a cause was instrumental in accomplishing a number of things in her environment, not the least of which was motivating young people to write well. A number of her students won honors on the Vermont Forestry Essay Contest over the years. She was good friends with many and counted them among her blessings. She is survived by her children Carolyn and Richard Blake of Binghamton and Carl and Donna Brown of Rutland; by five grandchildren; by five great-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her parents; by her brothers and a sister and their spouses; and by her husband, Erton C. Brown. Funeral services were held January 14 at the Barton United Church. A memorial service was held at Good Shepherd Fairview Home on January 17. Interment will be in Westlook Cemetery in Glover in the spring. , 69, of South Albany died unexpectedly at his home on Wednesday, January 12, 2005, in a house fire. Mr. Messier was born in Stannard on November 6, 1935, a son of the late Arthur and Alexandra (Brochu) Messier. He graduated from Greensboro High School in 1952 and Saint Michael's College in 1956. After college he worked in Connecticut at Sikorsky Aircraft and then returned to Burlington, where he worked as an insurance agent for Prudential Insurance Company for 29 years. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and reading. , 65, of Newport died in Newport on Friday, January 14, 2005. Mrs. Brooks was born in Brownington on November 12, 1939, a daughter of William and Marion (Kiser) Broome. In 1978 she married Freeman Brooks, who predeceased her in 1990. She worked in maintenance at Glover Community School from 1977 to 1999. She enjoyed doing needlepoint, reading, gardening, fishing, and snowmobiling with her husband until he died. Her family was very important to her, and she enjoyed their visits. , 26, of Irasburg died suddenly in Newport on Thursday, January 13, 2005. Mrs. Annis was born in Warwick, Rhode Island, on April 8, 1978, a daughter of Nancy (Courtney) Lemois and the late Brien Paul Lemois Sr. She attended the Community Collage of Vermont for three years and was planning on completing her teaching degree. She worked as a substitute teacher at Barton Academy and Graded School. She was an artist and enjoyed painting on wood. She loved spending time with her children, reading to them, doing crafts, and drawing. On August 2, 1997, she married Robert Annis Sr., who survives her. She is also survived by her sons: Robert Jr., age six, Francis Daniel, age five, Jospeh Shamus, age one, and newborn Thomas Keegan; by her mother, Nancy Lemois, of Irasburg; by her brother Brien Lemois Jr. and his fiancée, Laura Burton, of Orleans; by her brother-in-law Elwin Annis Jr. of Irasburg; by her paternal grandfather, Norman Lemois, of Warwick; by her uncles James Courtney Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Warwick and Robert Lemois of Pennsylvania; and by many cousins. Wilda (Jones) Smith

, 86, of Burlington and formerly of North Troy, died peacefully on January 22, 2005, in Burlington with her family by her side. Mrs. Smith was born in Glen Sutton, Quebec, on April 29, 1918, a daughter of Guild and Ellen (Dufur) Jones. On August 1, 1938, she married Garth "Bud" Smith, who predeceased her in 1976. They lived all their married life in North Troy. Together they had two children, Sandra and Michael. They operated the Border Restaurant for many years. She later worked at the Orleans County Memorial Hospital and North Country Hospital in the business office, retiring in 1983. Following retirement she worked at the Troy Elementary School as a teacher's aide and at the chamber of commerce in Newport. In her retirement, she enjoyed her many friends, knitting, reading, music, church gatherings, and family get-togethers. In 1994 she moved in with her daughter in Burlington. She then moved to Fern Hill where she had many wonderful friends, especially Nancy Eckerson. She enjoyed her "lunch bunch" on Tuesdays. She has left family and friends all with many wonderful memories. She was a loving, devoted daughter, granddaughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. She was an angel on Earth and is certainly one in God's kingdom. She will live on through her family and friends forever. She is survived by her daughter Sandra Denton and her husband, Bernard, of Burlington; by her son Michael and his wife, Josie, of Brunswick, Georgia; by her sisters Jennie Mae Lewis of Burlington and Joyce Poulin and her husband, Gaston, of Newport; by seven grandchildren: Wanda Audette and her husband, Bruce, Marc Denton and his wife, Lynn, Sara Carrier and her husband, Doug, Jodi-Anne and her fiancé, Chris, Derek, Amy and her husband, Jason, and Aaron; by six great-grandchildren: Katelynn, Ashley, and Bethany (Mrs. Smith's Goddaughter) Audette, Alice and Curtis Denton, and Michael, Alex, and Madison Carrier; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband; by her sister Freida; and by her brother-in-law Ralph Lewis. She loved her church and in good health was always in attendance. In lieu of flowers she would have been honored to have contributions made for the Altar Guild at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 1063 Prim Road, Colchester, Vermont 05446; or to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 9 Second Street, Newport, Vermont 05855. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, February 20, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Colchester. A graveside committal service will be held in the spring in North Troy.

, 91, of Canaan died Wednesday, January 12, 2005, at the Derby Green nursing home. Mrs. Nelson was born September 10, 1913, in Calais, Maine, a daughter of James B. and Mary (Anderson) Anderson. She attended school in Calais and was a 1931 graduate of Calais Academy. She went on to attend Lynn Hospital School of Nursing in Lynn, Massachusetts, graduating in 1937 as a registered nurse. She married Arthur H. Nelson December 25, 1937. In 1947 the Nelsons moved to Canaan where Mr. Nelson served as a U.S. Border Patrol officer and later as an agent for U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. She was extremely active in Canaan community affairs and events. She served as past president of the Canaan Women's Club and was best known as a longtime correspondent for the Colebrook News and Sentinel in her column "Canaan Chatter." She was also active in the Grace Methodist Church Women's Fellowship, the University of Vermont Extension Homemakers, and the St. John de Crevecoeur Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is survived by a daughter, Judith, and her husband, James Kavanagh, of Newport; by a son, David, and his wife, Patricia Nelson, of Wilton, New Hampshire; by seven grandchildren: Michael Kavanagh and his wife, Cynthia, of Brookline, Massachusetts, Timothy Kavanagh and his wife, Cheryl, of Burlington, Andrea Kavanagh and her fiancée, Ewell Smith, of Washington, D.C., Katherine Kavanagh of Newport, Kristen Nelson and her fiancée, Tony Yakovakis, of Milford, New Hampshire, and Erik Nelson and Andrew Nelson, both of Wilton, New Hampshire; by three great-grandchildren: Matthew, Alexander, and Sawyer Kavanagh, all of Burlington; by several nieces and nephews; and by her lifelong friend, Lillian Nutile, of Wakefield, Massachusetts. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur. Funeral services were held January 16 at the Grace Methodist Church in Canaan with the Reverend Priscilla Hull officiating. , 55, of Derby died suddenly in Newport on Friday, January 21, 2005. Mr. Lizotte was born in Newport on July 24, 1949, a son of Leonard and Jeannette Lizotte. He was a 1968 graduate of North Country Union High School, the first class to graduate from the new school. He served four years in the United States Air Force. He also served several years in the National Guard. He was employed at Ethan Allen for over 25 years. He enjoyed woodworking and spending time with family and grandchildren. He is survived by his beloved wife, Pamela Lizotte, whom he married on February 15, 1976. He was predeceased by his son Michael Cory Lizotte on May 11, 2000. He is also survived by his daughter Cassidy Villeneuve and her husband, Larry, of Coventry; by his parents, Leonard and Jeannette Lizotte, of Newport; by his sister Claudette Isom and her husband, Leonard, of Texas; by his parents-in-law, James Huntington and his wife, Sharon, of Barton; by his daughter-in-law Amie Lizotte of Newport; by his grandchildren: Natasha, Biancha, Codey, Skyler, Olivia, and Angel; by his sisters-in-law: Tina Bowen and her husband, Brice, of Germany, Kimberly Small and her husband, Gary, of Morgan, Deborah Bianchi and her husband, Sean, of Derby Line, Tammy Goad and her husband, Tim, of Barton, Carrie Helfant and her husband, John, of Brookfield, and Naomi Bryant and her husband, Jerry, of Barton; and by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, close friends, and co-workers. Funeral services were held January 26 at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel in Newport with the Reverend Michael DeSena officiating. Military honors followed the service. Spring interment will take place at the Jay Village Cemetery. , 16, of Lowell, died and left this world suddenly on Saturday, January 22, 2005. Shane was born in Morrisville on October 26, 1988, a son of Randy George and Tonya May (Elwood) Langmaid. He loved to work on or ride motorcycles, cars, trucks, and dirtbikes. He enjoyed racing snowmobiles with his father last winter. He loved spending time with his grandpa Eldred, his dad, Gerry, Kevin, and especially his new baby sister, Miriah. He was a junior at North Country Union High School in the Vermont Student Assistance Corporation Program and was hoping to go to college to be a mechanic. He is survived by his parents, Randy and Tonya Langmaid, of Lowell; by his sister Miriah Langmaid of Lowell; by his pals: Thomas R., Andrew A., Tim and Mark P., Nate H., and Jodi R.; by his special friend, Hannah R.; and by many grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was predeceased by his younger brother Ryan in December 2003. He will be sadly missed by his entire family and many friends. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 27, at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel on Lake Road in Newport at 3 p.m., with family and friends sharing moments of reflection. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. , 88, of Townsend, Massachusetts, formerly of East Montpelier and Lyndonville, died Saturday, January 15, 2005, in the Keystone Center in Leominster, Massachusetts. Born in Canada on December 24, 1917, a daughter of Joseph and Helena (Chabot) Brodeur, Mrs. Hodgeman resided much of her life in Vermont before moving to Massachusetts 25 years ago. For many years she owned and operated a propane gas and appliance retail store in Vermont; she later worked for the Caledonia Gas Company in Lyndonville, retiring in 1966. She was a member of St. John's Church in Townsend and the Townsend Golden Agers. She is survived by two sisters, Rita Porter of Townsend and Yvette Fedele of Newport; and by several nieces and nephews. She was the wife of Elwin Hodgeman, who died July 1965; and a sister of the late Joan Blanchette of Newport, New Hampshire, Paul Brodeur of Charlestown, New Hampshire, and Lucien Brodeur of Westfield, Massachusetts. Funeral services were held at St. John's Church January 17. Spring burial will be held in Lowell.

, 77, a daughter of the Charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, died January 22, 2005, at Mount Sacred Heart Provincial House and Infirmary in Littleton, New Hampshire. Sister Anita Bonin was born in Massawippi, Quebec, on April 10, 1927. She was the daughter of Wilfrid Bonin and Rose Dauphin. She professed her vows with her religious congregation on July 26, 1949. During her 56 years of religious life Sister Anita served in various missions in Newport, Colebrook and Littleton, New Hampshire, and Augusta, Maine. From 1965 to 1986, Sister Anita managed the former Sacred Heart High School kitchen in Newport. From 1986 to 1997, she managed the kitchen at the Provincial House and Retirement Home of the United States Province of the Daughters of the Charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. At that time she shifted into more full-time sewing services within the community, until illness prevented her from working in recent months. She was exemplary in her graciousness and patience with anyone she encountered. Her best recognized gift was cooking for retreat houses, schools, and convents, but she was also a very gifted seamstress. She loved meeting everyone's needs in the area of nutrition. Her high standards as a cook and kitchen manager made for a very smooth operation whether she cooked for large events or the ordinary daily fare. Her greatest pastime was to visit with members of her family and other sisters from her community. She was fond of jigsaw puzzles and enticed many to sit with her on even challenging 3-D projects. She treasured her experiences in her various missions and readily shared her stories. She was predeceased by her parents. Besides her sisters in the religious community, she is survived by two sisters, Simone Tardif and Leontine Girard; by nine brothers: Laureat, Jean-Claude, Leo-Pold, Joseph, Yves, Gerard, Romeo, Antonio, and Armand; and by many nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass was held January 22 at Mount Sacred Heart. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Newport on January 24. Spring interment will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery in Newport.
