, 87, of Barton died suddenly on December 26, 2004, in Manchester, Connecticut, with her family at her side. Mrs. Squires was born March 3, 1917, in Farnham, Quebec, a daughter of the late Homer and Florence (Morin) Royce. On January 28, 1937, she married Lawrence Squires, who predeceased her in August 1983. She was employed by Barton Cleaners for 29 years where she performed a variety of duties before retiring in 1982. She was also a member of St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Barton, often volunteering at the school library reading to the schoolchildren. She was a past regent of the Daughters of Isabella. Upon her retirement, she enjoyed working for the Vermont Area Agency on Aging, visiting elderly people throughout the Northeast Kingdom come rain or shine. "Nana" Squires dearly loved her family and friends throughout New England and Canada. She enjoyed visits from each and every one of them. Several times a year she visited Connecticut to be with her daughter, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren where she enjoyed herself immensely. However, she always enjoyed coming home to Barton as well. She is survived by her daughter Mary Anne Odegard and her husband, David, of Manchester; by six grandchildren: Mark Shaw of Canton, Connecticut, Jeffrey Shaw and his wife, Patricia, of Los Angeles, California, Heather Hazel and her husband, Michael, Lynn Black, Christine Huppe and her husband, Dan, all of Hebron, Connecticut, and Thomas Odegard of Las Vegas, Nevada; by seven great-grandchildren: Chelsea and Kevin Black, Alexa and Tyler Huppe, and Ryan, Emma, and Liam Hazel; and by her beloved four cousins: Patricia Cheney and Mildred Dean of Newport, Mary Anne Lisk of Milford, New Hampshire, and Frances Barrett of Tilton, New Hampshire. She was predeceased by her three sisters: Marion and Hilda Royce and Mabel "Tootsie" Wilson; and by one brother, Johnny. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, January 7, at Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Barton. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 8, at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Barton. Burial will be in the Welcome O. Brown Cemetery in Barton. Donald James Sanville

, 72, of Newport, beloved husband of Mona Sanville, died suddenly January 1, 2005, in Newport. Mr. Sanville was born on August 26, 1932, in Irasburg, a son of Ellery John and Eva Bell (Taylor) Sanville. He was a Korean War veteran serving his country from 1952 to 1954 in the United States Army. On May 22, 1954, he married Mona Bowen, who survives him. He retired after 37 years from Ethan Allen Manufacturing in Orleans, working in the chair repair department. He enjoyed hunting and tinkering on his cars, and he liked to have a good time with his family and friends. He held memberships with the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post No. 798 and the North Troy American Legion Post No. 28. Besides his wife, Mona, he is survived by his two sons, Brian Sanville and his wife, Lucia, and Douglas Sanville, both of Newport; by his grandchildren: Mary Jo Brasseur of Sheldon, Nathan Michaud of East Charleston, Michael Sanville of Derby, and Amanda Sanville of Hyde Park; by two great-grandchildren, Sophie Michaud and Noah Perry; by a sister, Sharlena Gosselin, of Newport; by brothers Paul Sanville of St. Johnsbury and Larry Sanville and his wife, Esther, of Florida; and by several nieces and nephews. , 94, a resident of Bel-Aire Quality Care Nursing Center and formerly of Brownington, died and went to the Lord on December 23, 2004. Mrs. Pepin was born in Derby Line on May 29, 1910, a daughter of Louis and Louise (LeBlanc) Turcotte. On May 31, 1937, she married Alphonse Pepin, who predeceased her July 19, 1999. She was employed as a child-care provider and at the Braywood Heel factory before her marriage. After her marriage she farmed for the next 40-plus years in addition to raising her five children who, while growing up, tested her patience repeatedly. She forever remained the strong matriarch, and they knew they could always turn to her for her support in time of need. A hobby of hers was crocheting. Before arthritis set in her fingers, she lovingly crocheted an afghan for each of her grandchildren she had at the time. Her grandchildren loved the times spent at Grammie's on the farm. The Sunday dinners, pies baked with fresh hand-picked berries, maple syrup she made from her own maple trees, her raised doughnuts, and the warmth and love were always abundant. She is survived by her sons: Edward Pepin and his wife, Linda, Armand Pepin, and Raymond Pepin and Helen McDermott; by her daughter Irene LeBlanc; by Pauline Choquette, who was a special friend of Mrs. Pepin's son Paul; by grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Richard, Kathleen, and Jacob Pepin, Ralph, Sandra, and Audrey Owen, Ginnette, Rudy, Samantha, Nicole, Danielle, and Rudy Dombi Jr., Theresa Pepin, Heidi Cyr, Dianne Pepin, Jerry, Sonja, and Michelle Pepin, Jeannie Milewski, Mark, Christine, and Madison Favreau, Brian, Rose, and Jason Pepin, Brad, Susan, Brittany, and Brady Blake, Bernie, Rachel, Tyler, and Dillon Pepin, David Pepin, and Nicholas LeBlanc. She was predeceased by her parents; by three sisters: Leah, Beatrice, and Irene; by three brothers: Homer, Albert and Regis; by her son Paul Pepin in 2003, and by her grandsons Richard Pepin in 1985 and Doug LeBlanc in 2004. She was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and the Ladies Guild and the Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening, and music. She loved children, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and spending time with her family and friends. In 1944 she married Roland LeBlanc, who predeceased her. , 82, of Irasburg died in Lebanon, New Hampshire, on Sunday, December 26, 2004. Mrs. Kennison was born in Craftsbury on April 5, 1922, the daughter of Jesse and Hazel (Davis) Farr. She worked at the Irasburg Graded School lunch department in the 1950s. She enjoyed hunting, fishing at her camp on Hartwell Pond, and doing craft work. She also liked to make cakes and wedding cakes and to snowmobile. She was a very active member of the United Church of Irasburg and the Ladies Aid. She was one of the organizers of the Irasburg Church Fair in 1952. She was also a member of the Irasburg Home Demonstration Club, the American Legion Post No. 21 Auxiliary, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 798 Auxiliary, and the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary. On November 16, 1940, she married Dean Kennison, who survives her. She is also survived by her children: Donald Kennison and his wife, Carolyn "Diana," of Marinna, Florida, Judy Andrews and her husband, Donald, of Dunbarton, New Hampshire, and David Kennison and his wife, Evelyn, of Irasburg; by her sisters: Mary Potter of Albany, Ruth Ingalls and her husband, Maurice, of Irasburg, and Odessa Sanville of Irasburg; by her sisters-in-law Rita Farr of Burlington and Doris Kennison of Orleans; by six grandchildren; by nine great-grandchildren; and by numerous nieces and nephews. , 89, of Derby died in Derby on Friday, December 31, 2004. Mrs. Houle was born in St. Bernard, Quebec, on April 24, 1916, a daughter of Francois Xavier and Maria (Charron) Angers. She was a woman of deep faith and a member of St. Mary's Star of the Sea Parish and the Ladies of St. Anne. She was extremely devoted to her family and enjoyed family get-togethers and individual visits. She worked as a seamstress for Newport Plastics for many years, retiring in 1978. She is survived by her daughters: Solange and Jean Pierre Maclure of Newport, Susan Bridges of Gardner, Massachusetts, and Pauline and Gary Cota of Derby; by her grandchildren: Roger, Andre, Marcel, Mary, and Francine Maclure, Sylvie and Philip Mathieu, Mark Houle, Rene Thibault, Crystal and Darren Tardif, and Chris Cota; and by her great-grandchildren: Brandon, Nicholas, Jonathan, and Kaylee Maclure, Philip Jr. and Nathan Mathieu, Audrey and Mario Houle, and Dustin Tardif. She was predeceased by her parents; by her stepfather, Jules Deslauriers; by her brothers Xavier Angers and Jean Paul Deslauriers; and by her grandson Raymond Maclure. , 67, of Albany died at his home Friday morning, December 31, 2004. Mr. Horner was born in Albany on May 19, 1937, a son of the late Aaron Horner Sr. and the late Grace Poutry Horner Carter. He attended Albany Graded School. He was married to Sylvia Boucher, who survives. They raised their family in Albany where he was employed by W.P. Brow Potato Farm. More recently he had retired from driving a tire delivery truck for Park View Garage. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Besides his wife, Sylvia, he leaves three sons: Rick Horner of Derby, Aaron Horner III of Albany, and Daniel Horner of Lyndonville; one daughter, Michelle Tetreault, and her husband, Dale, of Cabot; two brothers, Frank "Phil" Horner and Robert Horner and his wife, Penny, of Albany; one sister, Josephine Bowen, of Morrisville; three grandchildren: Sean Horner, Brooke Tetreault, and Dylan Tetreault; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Marcel Horner. No services are planned at this time. A spring service will be announced at a later date.
William A. Fyfe III

, 88, former representative to the Vermont House from Newport, died in Newport on Thursday, December 23, 2004. Mr. Fyfe was the beloved husband of Barbara Potter Fyfe. He was born on July 30, 1916, in Melrose, Massachusetts, a son of William A. and Wilhelmina (Frasier) Fyfe. He spent several years in Massachusetts and Maine before moving to St. Johnsbury, where he lived from 1953 to 1966. He served in the U.S. Army during the mid 1940s. He worked for Swift & Company in Maine, Massachusetts, and Vermont for 22 years. He was a hospital administrator in St. Johnsbury and administrator for a local mental health organization. When he and his wife moved to Newport in 1966, he served the Newport City Police Department as dispatcher and ran the Orleans County Jail. He was a past member of the Rotary and IOOF in St. Johnsbury. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Newport Lodge No. 2155 and American Legion Newport Post No. 21. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic order in St. Johnsbury. He was listed in Who's Who in the East. He served 18 years in the Vermont House and at one time was the oldest member of the House. His efforts are very evident in many different projects that have been done in the area over the last several years. He was a very civic-minded person, serving many different organizations in his quiet unassuming way. He also served in local and state government. He was a man who had the reputation of getting things done. He and his wife celebrated their sixty-fifth anniversary on December 16. They enjoyed traveling to Europe, Scotland, Italy, Hawaii, and Florida. He also enjoyed playing cribbage. He was very athletic in his younger years and was an expert ski jumper, trying out for the U.S. Olympic ski team. He will be missed by his friends at Hoagie's and several other restaurants that he and his wife often visited. He is survived by his wife, Barb, of Newport; by his children: John A. Fyfe of Newport, Andrea Fyfe Smith of St. Johnsbury, and William Fyfe IV and his wife, Mary-Jo, of Colchester; by his brothers Phillip and his wife, Theda, and Donald of Maine; by his sister Dorothy Cole and her husband, Clarence, of Maine; by eight grandchildren; and by three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by two brothers; and by his son-in-law Ronald A. Smith in November 2003. A memorial service was held December 29 at a Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend Joy Toll-Chandler officiating. , 74, of Newport died suddenly in Newport on Friday, December 17, 2004. Mr. Fauchs was born in Newport on February 14, 1930, the youngest child of Henry W. Fauchs and Jessie (Brown) Fauchs. His youngest years were spent on Orchard Street in Newport. Later his family moved to North Troy. He graduated from North Troy High School and then joined the United States Air Force. After completing his military service, he returned to the Newport area and was employed in various area businesses. He was most recently employed with the Newport City school system and Columbia Forest Products. He was very moved by the retirement party that Columbia Forest Products held for him when he recently retired from employment there. On July 25, 1959, he married Patricia Wetherby, who predeceased him on May 12, 2002. The loss of his wife of nearly 43 years was devastating for him. His loss was only softened somewhat by the love and support of his family and many friends. He is survived by his daughter Margaret "Mickey" Fauchs Sheehan, of Springfield; by his grandchildren: April, Amber, and Jeffrey; by his nieces and nephews: Betty (Lawson) Murray of Charleston, Jean (Lawson) McKenny of Derby, Linda (Lawson) Flanders of Newport, Steven P. Lawson of Newport, and Linda (Fauchs) Taylor of Williamsburg, Virginia; by cousins: David Regan of Newport, Frannie (Brown) Merchant of St. Johnsbury, and Elmer Brown of Thetford; and by many great-nieces and -nephews. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his mother and father; by his older sister Marion "Peg" Fauchs Lawson; by his older brother Bruce A. Fauchs; by his older brother Ronald C. Fauchs, who died as a small child; and by his nephews Jerry L. Lawson and Stephen B. Fauchs. He was a very loving and giving person, and he constantly tried to find ways to share with others. He will be missed by his family and friends. According to his wishes, a graveside service will be held in the spring and will be announced at that time. In lieu of flowers or donations, his family requests that his friends extend Mr. Fauchs' giving nature by doing something special for someone less fortunate this holiday season.

, 73, of Newport died in Burlington on Sunday, December 26, 2004. Mr. Cheney was born in Newport on February 20, 1931, the son of Leo E. and Thelma (Morse) Cheney. On July 22, 1950, he married Helen "Ricky" Margaret Foster, who predeceased him in 1996. He was a master union carpenter and worked on bridges and the Empire State Building in New York City for several years. He continued working as a carpenter in Massachusetts, Florida, Indiana, Virginia, and Vermont. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he enjoyed reading. He was the family cook and baker in the early years. He was talented in many areas and was known as a hard worker. He enjoyed his family and grandchildren, and he always extended a helpful hand to everyone. He enjoyed telling stories, and he had a great sense of humor. He is survived by his children: Robert Cheney and his wife, Tracy, of Clifton Park, New York, Cathy Cheney of South Burlington, and Shane Cheney of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; by his grandchildren: Daniel Reyes of South Burlington, Morgan Hodges-Cheney and Shannon Hodges-Cheney both of Clifton Park; Troy S. Cheney of St. Albans, and Olivia Cheney-Femia of South Burlington; by his siblings: Frank Cheney and his wife, Jeannette, of Newport, Beverly Britch and her husband, Roland, of Newport, Wayne Cheney and his wife, Priscilla, of North Troy, Diane Renihan and her husband, David, of Florida, and Donna Lontine and her husband, Richard, of Ensoburg Falls; and by several nieces and nephews. , also known as Sister Antoine du Sacre Coeur, age 90, of Mt. Sacred Heart Convent in Littleton, New Hampshire, died at the convent on Wednesday, December 29, 2004, after a short illness. Sister Antoine was born in Bromptonville, Quebec, Canada, a daughter of Joseph and Josephine (Labrie) Chabot. She made her profession to the Daughters of the Charity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus on August 9, 1938. During her 66 years of religious life, she served missions in Plattsburgh, New York, Alfred, Maine, Hudson, New Hampshire, Derby Line, and Littleton. She had resided in Littleton since 1995. She excelled in her approach and availability to hospitality work and community services in retreat houses and schools with resident students. From 1977 to 1995, she served the needs of the elder residents of Michaud Memorial Manor in Derby Line. She remained very close to her family and frequently was in contact with them. She enjoyed their visits. She cherished her many friends from Quebec, New England, and New York and was a faithful correspondent to any who took time to write or call. She was predeceased by her parents; by three sisters: Cecile, Simone, Colombe; and by three brothers: Euphemeus, Edgar, and Francois. Besides her sisters in the religious community, she is survived by two sisters-in-law, Sylvia and Irene; by a brother-in-law, Maurice Dion; and by several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass was held December 31 at the convent chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church January 3. Spring interment will take place in St. Mary's Cemetery in Newport.

, 97, of Irasburg died at North Country Hospital in Newport on Sunday, January 2, 2005. Mrs. Alger was born at her home on Burton Hill in Irasburg on May 1, 1907, the daughter of Walter and Ethel (Flint) Chadburn. She attended Barton Academy. On September 19, 1951, she married Glen Alger, who predeceased her on December 23, 2002. Together they owned and operated a farm for 23 years. She was a very active person and a great cook, and she enjoyed making doughnuts and bread. She loved playing the piano, especially her favorite song, "My Wild Irish Rose." She is survived by her sister Vera I. "Vic" Chadburn of Jericho; by her sister-in-law Alice Hilliker of Orleans; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother Gerald Chadburn; and by her sister Lena Griffin. At Mrs. Alger's request, there will be no services. , 73, of Meriden, Connecticut, died Sunday, December 19, 2004, at the Masonic Health Center in Wallingford, Connecticut, after a lengthy illness. Mr. Stone was the beloved husband of Marion Graveline Stone. Born March 23, 1931, in Glover, a son of the late Elwin T. and Alice Drew Stone, he was a veteran of the Korean War having served in the U.S. Army. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He had been employed by International Silver Company for 30 years and later as a truck driver for the Connecticut Department of Transportation for 15 years until his retirement eight years ago. He also was the proprietor of Dean F. Stone Sr. Paving Company and Sanitation. Mr. Stone was a member of the South Meriden Volunteer Fire Department. Besides his wife, Marion, he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law Dean F. Stone Jr. and Joanne Stone of South Meriden; by his three daughters and two sons-in-law: Debra S. and Timothy Granger of Wallingford, Rebecca S. and Gerald Berube of Middletown, Connecticut, and Lisa S. Eng of Branford, Connecticut; by his sister Vanessa Shufelt of Indiana; by his six brothers: Mason Stone, Hugh Stone, and Arland Stone, all of Vermont, Daniel Stone of Massachusetts, Beckley Stone of Wallingford, and Owen Stone of New Britain, Connecticut; by his nine grandchildren; by ten great-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews. , 79, of Derby and formerly of Island Pond, died peacefully January 5, 2005, in Newport. Mrs. Ovitt was born August 26, 1925, in Morgan, a daughter of George and Ellen (LaBounty) McKenney. She married Horace Edgar Ovitt, who predeceased her on May 11, 1985. She received her general equivalency diploma from Eva Warner's adult education program in Newport. She was a dryer operator at the Brown Veneer Mill Company in Strafford, New Hampshire. She also cleaned houses and was a part-time cook at Seymour Inn in Morgan. She enjoyed watching television, playing bingo, spending time with her grandchildren, and cooking for the family. She held membership with American Legion Auxilary Post No. 80 and Home Dem in Island Pond. She is survived by her children: Rosalie Boutin of Newport, Raymond Boutin and his wife, Gloria Jean, of Detroit, Michigan, and Linda Horn and her husband, James, of Newport Center; by the following grandchildren: James Michael, Sherry Allard, Lynn Daggett, Joseph Boutin, and Christina Ballard; by great-grandchildren: Nicholas Horn, Craig Allen Daggett, Amanda Rose Daggett, and Kaitlyn Ballard; by the following sisters: Doris Snyder of Newport, Rossie Baraw of Newport, and Vanessa Knox of Gilman; and by several nieces and nephews.
