, 93, of Newport died peacefully June 10, 2004, in Newport. Mr. Fidler was born July 12, 1910, in West Virginia, a son of Garfield and Effie (Heater) Fidler. On September 1, 1934, he married Vallie Crickard, who predeceased him on October 23, 2003. He was general manager of Weyerhaeuser in North Troy and Hancock, and after several promotions he settled in Toronto and became vice president and general manager of Weyerhaeuser Canada. He retired in 1971 and moved to Newport. He held memberships with the Memphremagog Lodge No. 65 of Free and Accepted Masons and Mount Sinai Shrine, and he was a life member of Newport Elks Lodge No. 2155. He was a former member of the Newport Rotary Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening. He is survived by his children: Patty Rouse of Sacramento, California, June Gendron and her husband, Raymond, of St. Johnsbury, Sue Shimalla and her husband, Floyd, of Apalachin, New York, Sandra Fidler of Miami, Florida, and Lillian Fidler of Washington, D.C.; by 16 grandchildren; by 33 great-grandchildren; by one great-great-grandchild; by a sister Helen Vacher of Tampa, Florida; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by seven brothers and four sisters. Funeral services were held June 12 at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend Martha Peck officiating. Interment followed in Pine Grove Cemetery. , 84, of Derby died at her home with her children by her side on Friday, June 11, 2004. Mrs. Stoddard was the beloved wife of Aubrey Stoddard, whom she married in 1939 and who predeceased her in March 1992. She was born in Derby on December 9, 1919, the daughter of Reid S. and Goldie Mae (Hayward) Leonard. She graduated from Derby Academy and managed to attend all of its alumni banquets from that time up to 2003. She was a woman who enjoyed being at home with her children while they were growing up. She had many irons in the fire, including taking care of big vegetable gardens and her flowers. She also loved to knit and crochet, making many gifts for friends and family and nursing home residents. She also enjoyed hunting and fishing with her husband, especially going to Holland Pond where they owned a camp for many years. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her many hours of love and enjoyment as she watched them grow and develop. She was a proud member of the Vermont Mayflower Society, an organization whose members can show they are direct descendents of the Mayflower passengers. She is survived by her son Roger Stoddard and his companion, Alyce Daggett, of Holland; by her daughters Patricia Rines and her husband, Stephen, of West Charleston and Lorraine Tice and her husband, Terrance, of Holland; by her brothers Reid Leonard and his wife, Mary Jane, of Pensacola, Florida, and Kenneth Leonard and his wife, Jane, of Milton, Florida; by eight grandchildren; by six great-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son Dwight in 1943. Graveside services will be held on Friday, June 18, at the Pine Grove Cemetery at 11 a.m., with the Reverend Carl Shoemaker officiating. , 96, of South Burlington died June 12, 2004, in Pillsbury Manor North in South Burlington after a short illness. Mrs. Stevens was born in Morrisville on May 4, 1908, the only daughter of George W. and Blanche Atwood Clark. She graduated from Peoples Academy in Morrisville in 1926, from Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, New Hampshire, in 1928, and from Middlebury College in 1932. She married Joseph K. Stevens of Boston, Massachusetts, on June 25, 1932. During their 56 years of marriage they lived in several locations including Morrisville, Orleans, Woodstock, Jericho, South Burlington, Lancaster, New Hampshire, and Syracuse, New York. She was active in the Episcopal churches she attended in these locations, serving on the Altar Guild and numerous other committees, and she was a member of All Saints' Church in South Burlington when she died. She was a member of the Pythian Sisters Chittenden Temple 15 in Burlington and Mary C. Burdick Chapter 6 of Jericho, in which she held various offices. She was a dedicated volunteer, giving hundreds of hours of service over 25 years to Community General Hospital in Syracuse and to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington. She was an avid reader and letter writer and was always interested in the world and people around her. Her great love of family and friends, and her kindness, generosity, and loving spirit were an inspiration to all who knew her. She is survived by her son Henry and his wife, Pat, of Punta Gorda, Florida; by her daughter Barbara and husband, Steve, of Syracuse; by her daughter-in-law Carrie Stevens of Hallowell, Maine; and by her sister-in-law Jean Clark of Morrisville. She also leaves a true friend, Ginette Laliberte, of Essex. Her husband, Joe, her son Murray, and her brother, Francis A. Clark, predeceased her. Grandchildren include Sheryl Stevens of Auburn, Maine, Murray Stevens Jr. and his wife, Mary Jo, of Manchester, Maine, Julie Stevens-Bourne of Waterbury, Cynthia Morrill and her husband, Bruce, of Franklin, New Hampshire, Phillip Stevens of Alton, New Hampshire, Linda Stevens of Milton, New Hampshire, and Timothy White and his wife, Dawn D'Eredita, of Syracuse. Great-grandchildren include David Cormier and his wife, Kate, of Concord, New Hampshire, Carissa and Lesley Stevens of Manchester, Maine, Zachary Stevens-Ackerly of Auburn, Maine, Bryn Ann Stevens-Bourne of Waterbury, Mitchell and Alexa D'Eredita, and Stephen and Jennifer White, all of Syracuse. Great-grandchildren include Saydie and Daysie Cormier of Concord. Nieces and nephews include Francine Page and her husband, Richard, of Essex, Carolyn Brown of Morrisville, Robert Clark of Calpelia, California, Bertha Jane Belcher and her husband, Wes, of Rockland, Massachusetts, Carolyn Sutcliffe and her husband, Doug, of Sanbornton, New Hampshire, Nancy Murphy and her husband, Cal, of Sequim, Washington, and Joseph Erickson and his wife, Kathy, of Claremont, California; and several grand-nieces and grand-nephews. , 23, of Island Pond died peacefully June 8, 2004, in Lebanon, New Hampshire, surrounded by her family. Ms. Kinney was born May 16, 1981, in Newport a daughter of Alson and Cathy (O'Gorman) Kinney. She graduated from North Country Union High School in 1999 and later graduated from New Hampshire Community Technical College in Claremont, New Hampshire, with an associate of science degree in physical therapy. She had been employed by North Country Hospital for three years as a physical therapist assistant. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, crew member and leader at the Vermont Leadership Center, and a member of the North Country Dance Company. She was a dependable member of the her grandmother's catering service. She was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing. She is survived by her parents, Alson and Cathy Kinney, of Island Pond; by a younger sister, Kalli Kinney, of Island Pond; by her maternal grandmother, Muriel O'Gorman, of Island Pond; by a special companion and best friend, Gab Leigh, of Island Pond; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins of the Kinney and O'Gorman families; by the extended families of Earl and Wendy Leigh and Lyons families; and by many friends, co-workers, patients, and her caregivers at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. A memorial service was held June 14 at the Christ Episcopal Church in Island Pond with the Reverend Jean McDonald and the Reverend Garrett Keizer co-officiating. A reception followed the service at the American Legion Hall in Island Pond. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family. , 78, of North Troy and Enosburg died in St. Albans on Sunday, June 20, 2004. Mr. Starr was born in Troy on October 7, 1925, the son of George E. and Hazel (Hardy) Starr. He farmed in North Troy all his life. He also drove school bus for the town of Troy for 37 years and retired after 23 years as a rural mailman. He was a member of the Vermont Housing Authority, Troy Union Lodge No. 16 of Free and Accepted Masons, and a lifetime member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks Newport Lodge No. 2155. He was past director of Agri-Mark, an organizing founder of Rural Vermont, selectman for the town of Troy for nine years, and a past school board director at North Country Union High School. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, and going to his pond and camp. He also liked to watch the Red Sox and enjoyed having company. He especially enjoyed his family and their get-togethers. In 1949 he married Ila Nelson, who survives him. He is also survived by his children: Virgil Starr and his wife, Linda, of North Troy, Jack Starr Jr. and his wife, Dianne, of Bristol, Connecticut, James Starr and his girlfriend, Jennifer Gaffney, of North Troy, Gary Starr and his wife, Pamela, of Jay, Betty Griggs and her friend, Brian Barnard, of North Troy, and William Starr and his girlfriend, Penny Flynn, of North Troy; by his brothers Urban Starr Sr. and his wife, Jean, of North Troy and Durward Starr and his wife, Lorraine, of North Troy; by his sisters Dorothy Westerberg of North Troy and Ida Cadieux and her husband, John, of Newport; by 12 grandchildren; and by ten great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Shirley Gray and her husband, Wayne, of South Burlington and Clara Mayhew of North Troy; by his brother-in-law Larry Baker Sr. of Florida; and by several nieces, nephews, and cousins. , 56, of Orleans died in Newport on Tuesday, June 15, 2004, following a long illness. Mr. Roberts was born in Fall River, Massachusetts, on October 5, 1947, the son of John Jr. and Catherine (Carr) Roberts. He graduated from Orleans High School and from Vermont Technical College with a degree in mechanical engineering with honors. He enjoyed fishing and went on several fishing trips to Canada with his friends Dave Moore and Stan Dority. In his younger years he was an active participant in many different sports. Recently he had taken up creating art with pastels and charcoals. He is survived by his son John Scott of California; by his brother William Roberts of Barre; by his sister Diane Rivard and her husband, Jim, of West Windsor, New York; and by nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a special friend, George Stone, of Orleans. A graveside service was held June 19 at St. Theresa's Cemetery in Orleans with the Reverend Peter O'Leary officiating. , 85, of Barton died peacefully June 19, 2004, at her home. Mrs. Matie was born May 23, 1919, in Monument Beach, Massachusetts, a daughter of Charlie and Lena (Perry) Limburg. On December 9, 1944, she married George Matie, who survives her. During her lifetime she was a bookkeeper for a retail hardware store. She and her husband had lived in Barton since 1990. She was a member of the American Legion Auxillary in Montpelier. She is survived by her husband, George Matie, of Barton; by her daughter Doris Muir of Indiana; by a son, George Matie Jr., and his wife, Janet, of Denver, Colorado; by seven grandchildren; by three great-grandchildren; by two great-great-grandchildren; and by sisters Caroline Smith of Barton and Gloria Sparrow of Virginia. She was predeceased by a daughter, Carlene Bell, in 2002. A prayer service celebrating Mrs. Matie's life will be held Wednesday, June 23, at the Barton United Church at 1 p.m., with the Reverend Michael Caldwell officiating.

, 88, of Island Pond died at his home on Monday, June 14, 2004. Mr. Bingham was born in Highgate on March 24, 1916, the son of Clifford and Isabelle (Larabee) Bingham. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He worked as a foreman of bridge building for the Canadian National Railroad. He was a member of American Legion Island Pond Post No. 80 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Island Pond Random Post No. 2309. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, doing crossword puzzles, gardening, and reading Western stories. He was an avid Red Sox fan. On April 2, 1963, he married Dorothy Deth, who survives him. He is survived by his children: Roena Bingham of Island Pond, Howard Bingham Jr. of Island Pond, Rachel Garfield of Island Pond, Ethel Matos of Island Pond, Patty Lewis of Manchester, New Hampshire, and Hazel Morrison of St. Johnsbury; by his grandchildren: Naomi Benoit, Tonya Kidder, Tabatha Young, Adam Young, Felicia Garfield, Eric Garfield, Sabrina Garfield, and Gabrielle Garfield; by his siblings: Francis Lumbra of St. Johnsbury, Evelyn Drew of West Burke, Marshall Bingham of West Burke, and Velma Grant of Derby Line; by seven great-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews. On June 12, 1948, she married Wilfred "Bill" Verge, who predeceased her on June 11, 1990. She was a volunteer driver for many years for Rural Community Transportation. She enjoyed going to yard sales, Red Sox baseball games, and softball games. She enjoyed playing cards. She especially enjoyed her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She is survived by her children Linda Santaw and her fiancé, Reg Carpenter, and Donald Verge, all of North Troy; by her grandchildren Shawn and his wife, Heidi, of Newport and Marc and his wife, Tina, of North Troy; by her great-grandchildren: Kara, Abbie, T.J., and Ally; by her sisters Alice Willis of Michigan and Olive Fitzsimmons of Rutland; by her special friend Margaret Willis of North Troy; and by nieces and nephews. , 87, of Derby died in Derby in Monday, June 28, 2004. Mr. Roberts was born in Orleans on December 5, 1916, the son of Israel and Della Roberts. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He earned an associate's degree in agriculture from Vermont Technical College. He worked as a security guard and clerk for Fort Monmouth Army Base in Eatontown, New Jersey, for 30 years. He enjoyed rabbit hunting, fishing, and watching wrestling on television. On March 26, 1945, he married Marjorie Pope, who survives him. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Mark Roberts, Scott Roberts, Sussanne Romero, and Frederick Linquest; by his brother Darcy Roberts of Morrisville; by his sister-in-law Isabelle Roberts of Orleans; and by nieces and nephews. , 86, of Westmore died in Newport on Wednesday, June 23, 2004. Mrs. Pyden was born in Detroit, Michigan, on April 11, 1918, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Hausch. She worked as a bookkeeper for A.J. Baxter Company in Michigan. While in Michigan she was active in the Catholic church and was a former religious coordinator for CCD at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Barton. She moved to Westmore 18 years ago from Michigan. She enjoyed helping her son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Sherry, with their bed and breakfast, the Fox Hall Inn, in Westmore. She was also an avid reader. In 1939 she married Stanley Pyden, who predeceased her. She is survived by her son Kenneth Pyden and his wife, Sherilyn, of Westmore; by her grandchildren: Jeffrey Pyden and his wife, Nancy, of Georgia, Gregory Pyden and his wife, Lisa, of Michigan, Carrie Mello and her husband, John, of Vermont, and Kristi Hines and her husband, Matt, of Missouri; and by her great-grandchildren: Ashlyn, Jacob, Andrew, Chloe, Rachel, Emily, Phoebe, Jillian, Madelyn, Forrest, Gregory, and Ethan. , 69, of Irasburg died in Barton on Thursday, June 24, 2004. Mr. Mosher was born in Ayers Cliff, Quebec, on January 30, 1935, the son of Lawrence and Ruth (Rever) Mosher. He owned and operated Mosher's Market in Irasburg, where he also was the meat cutter. He also farmed in Irasburg for many years and was a horse trainer all his life. He was a member of the U.S. Trotting Association of horse racing for 40 years. He loved playing with his grandchildren and loved all his family. He enjoyed square dancing, playing darts, and hunting. On November 17, 1958, he married Cleo Patricia Kelley, who survives him. He is also survived by his children: Carlene Lanoue and her husband, Glenn, of Irasburg, Crystal Perkins and her husband, Michael, of Irasburg, Craig Mosher and his wife, Penny, of Loch Sheldracke, New York, and Connie Campilango and her husband, Scott, of Saratoga Springs, New York; by his grandchildren: Derek, Kelley, Gregory, Lindsey, Christopher, Brandon, Ryan, Darrin, and Ashley; by his siblings: Wendell Mosher and his wife, Rose Marie, of Ayers Cliff, Sis Boisclair of Beebe, Quebec, Dewey Mosher and his wife, Joan, of Smith Falls, Ontario, Ruby Grenier and her husband, Armel, of Ayers Cliff, Hilda Hebert and her husband, John, of Ayers Cliff, Larry Mosher of Knowlton, Quebec, and Gail Mosher of Cowansville, Quebec; by his mother-in-law, Bethleen Kelley, of Barton; and by several nieces and nephews. of Coventry and Naples, Florida, died suddenly in Crofton, Maryland, on Sunday, June 20, 2004. Mrs. Hussey was born on June 27, 1927, in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, and married George Hussey in Milton, Massachusetts, on September 10, 1949. They lived on the South Shore of Massachusetts until the family moved to Lyndon Center in 1971, and then to Newport and Naples, Florida, when Mr. Hussey retired. She is survived by her husband, George A. Hussey; by her children: Janet Hussey Monette and her husband, John Monette, of Derby, Robert A. Hussey and his wife, Judith Berthiaume, of Coventry, Richard C. Hussey and his wife, Susan Salovitz, of Tucson, Arizona, and Susan P. Schroeder and her husband, Stefan Schroeder, of Crofton, Maryland; by grandchildren: Scott A. Hussey and his wife, Ashley Packard, of Milwaukie, Oregon, Amanda Hussey of Coventry, Megan Monette of Derby, Cheyenne Melanson of Crofton, and Jacob Hussey of Tucson. She had a special relationship with her beloved sister Beatrice J. Cheever of Naples. She loved life to the fullest. Blessed with a loving family and many friends, she spread cheer to those around her. She and her husband enjoyed almost 55 years together, square dancing, traveling, and working side by side building their dream homes. Reading, sewing, and crafts were her other passions. , 77, of North Troy died at her home on Sunday, June 27, 2004. Mrs. Dietz was born in Jasper, Alabama, on December 20, 1926, the daughter of Horace K. and Irene (McKissack) Barr. She was the former owner of a fabric store in Taftsville for many years and an antique business that she also ran from her home. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed working with crafts. She was an excellent cook, seamstress, and all around mom and friend to all. She was very devoted to her family and enjoyed family gatherings. She played several different musical instruments and appreciated the arts. She was a past director of the Center for Pro-Life Studies in North Troy as well as past executive director of Vermont Right to Life. She was an active organizer of the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., from 1975 to 1982. She served as the Vermont coordinator for the Ellen McCormack for president campaign in 1976 and was a Democratic candidate for Congress in 1978. On April 11, 1953, she married Frank Dietz, who survives her. She is also survived by her children: Mary Theresa Dietz and her husband, Jeff Panther, of Tucson, Arizona, Sister M. Roberta, M.C. Friends may call at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on Darling Hill Road in Newport on Thursday, July 1, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 2, at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Troy at 11 a.m., with the Reverend Jerome Mercure officiating. Interment will follow at St. Ignatius Cemetery in Lowell.
