, 92, of Newport died in Newport on Thursday, April 15, 2004. Mrs. Drown was born in Newport on May 16, 1911, the daughter of Arthur and Lillian (Goodenough) True. In 1941 she married Mandy Drown, who predeceased her in 1973. She worked as a bookkeeper for the city of Newport. She was an honorary life member of American Legion Newport Post No. 21 for 48 years. She was also a member of the United Church of Newport and a member of the United Church Women's Club for many years. She liked to go fishing with Mandy and derived great pleasure in being with her family members. She also enjoyed walking downtown to have coffee and conversation with her many friends, especially at the old Royal restaurant. Until her early eighties, she walked to the area nursing homes to play the piano and sing songs with Reg Seguin. She is survived by her son Bruce Drown and his wife, Christine, of Lyndon Center; by her grandchildren: Craig and Teri Drown, Dianna and Allen Rom, Sara and Gene Ercolani, and Darcie and Dan Streetman; by her stepgrandchildren: Bob and Tiffany Carter, and Brian, Elizabeth and Paul Carter; by eight great-grandchildren; and by nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her sister Bertha Lawson. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Ralph M. Davignon

, 67, of Burlington died in Burlington on Monday, April 12, 2004. Mr. Davignon was born in Albany on September 14, 1936, the son of Leo and Nellie (Pudvah) Davignon. He lived in and enjoyed the city of Burlington for many years. He was a frequent visitor to many of the downtown places in the city for coffee and conversation. He was very family oriented and kept in touch with all of the family. He had a fantastic memory, which served him well during his lifetime. He is survived by his brothers: Francis Davignon of Brownington, the Reverend Charles Davignon of Woodstock, and Ernest Davignon and his wife, Cecile, of West Lebanon, New Hampshire; by his sisters: Elizabeth Denning and her husband, Joseph, of Morgan, Anita Cook of Morgan, Kathleen Duffey of Enfield, Connecticut, and Lorita Hogan of Northfield, Massachusetts; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Raymond Davignon. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 15 at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Orleans with the Reverend Charles Davignon and the Reverend Daniel Rupp officiating. Interment followed at St. Paul's Cemetery in Barton. Daniel George Cummings Sr.

, 49, of Glover, formerly of Winooski, died Sunday, April 11, 2004, with his loving family by his side, after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Cummings was born in Colchester on November 10, 1954, the son of Anita (Barber) Cummings and the late Bernard Cummings Sr. He was a graduate of Winooski High School in the class of 1972 and the University of Vermont in the class of 1977, and he received a master's degree from Lesley College in 1997. He was married in St. Stephen Catholic Church in Winooski on October 22, 1983, to Susan M. Beaulieu. He was employed at Barton Academy and Graded School as a physical education and health teacher. His involvement with the children of the Northeast Kingdom was immeasurable. He was the president of the Lake Region Little League from 1990 to 1998. He ran the Orleans Central Supervisory Union Junior Hoop League from 1992 to 1996. He coached varsity softball and junior varsity baseball at Lake Region Union High School. He coached junior high girls and boys basketball at the Glover and Barton schools from 1991 to 2001. He coached Babe Ruth baseball from 1998 to 2000. His life also included the passion for hunting and fishing. He had a true respect for life and was one with the land. He touched the lives of many, young and old alike, and will be greatly missed by all. He is survived by his wife, Susan M. Cummings; by his son Daniel Cummings Jr.; by his mother, Anita Cummings, of Winooski; by his sisters: Judy Reed and her husband, Damon, of Warren, Cindy Parizo and her husband, Homer, of Richmond, and Bonnie and her civil union partner, Flower Kotkes, of Essex; by his brothers: Bernie Cummings Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Colchester, John Cummings of Abilene, Texas, Glenn Cummings and his wife, Ronalyn, of Colchester, and Robin Cummings and his wife, Lisa, of Milton; by his mother- and father-in-law, Jeannette Beaulieu Audette and Edward Audette of Bristol and Kissimmee, Florida; by brothers-in-law David Beaulieu and his wife, Kim, of Milton and Jamie Beaulieu of Colchester; by sisters-in-law: Sandra Lane and her husband, Scott, of Essex Junction, Shelley Beaulieu and her partner, Kim Dean, of St. Albans, and Kathy Prehoda and her husband, David, of Bristol; by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; and by a host of friends, neighbors, and colleagues. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 14 in St. Stephen Catholic Church in Winooski. Interment followed in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Winooski. Muriel Brown Condon

, 87, of Brookfield died March 18, 2004, at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin. Mrs. Condon was born June 5, 1916, the daughter of Archie and Beulah (Jenkins) Brown. She married Byron Herrick January 21, 1935, and he died March 19, 1936. She married W. Condon Jr. in 1955, and he died in 1981. Following Mr. Herrick's death due to an untimely drowning in the Clyde River while working as a civil engineer for the city of Newport, she moved to Connecticut and worked at the Hartford Retreat. She later worked for Pratt and Whitney, where she was a skilled parachute folder. Following several years in Danbury, Connecticut, she moved to Plainville, Connecticut, where she worked for Gould Electronics as an inspector. After retiring she moved to Derby and later to Brookfield. She was predeceased by a brother, Stuart Brown; two sisters, Barbara Gigliotti and Beatrice Anderson; and by nieces, nephews, and several members of the Brown family.
Floride D. Blais

, 83, of Derby Line died Wednesday morning, April 14, 2004, in Newport following a brief illness. Mrs. Blais was born in Stanstead, Quebec, on March 8, 1921, the daughter of Liboire and Rebecca (Fontaine) Legueux. She made all sorts of cakes for all occasions. She was a member of the St. Edward's Altar Society, where she was very active in the society projects, such as tending the altar and the priest's vestments and helping in the parish kitchen whenever she was called. She was a member of American Legion Newport Post No. 21 Auxiliary and Home Dem. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and tending to their garden to the delight of their neighbors. She was very family oriented, and nothing gave her greater pleasure than family gatherings. She also enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. On August 30, 1946, she married Benoit Blais, who survives her. She is also survived by the following children: Maurice and his wife, Debbie, of San Diego, California, Norman Blais of Burlington, Claude Blais of Killington, and Lena McGill and her husband, Larry, of Australia; by her brother Romeo Lagueux of Ways Mill, Quebec; by her sisters Annie Fauteux of Sherbrooke, Quebec, and Rita Lefebvre of Stanstead, Quebec; by four grandchildren; and by two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sisters Yvonne and Leda Fauteux; and by her brother Ludger Legueux. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 17 at St. Edward's Catholic Church in Derby Line. , 78, of Newport died in Glover on Thursday, April 22, 2004, following a long illness. Mrs. Picard was born in Newport Center on April 1, 1926, the daughter of Robert and Grace (Randall) McMaster. On June 2, 1947, she married Earl Picard, who survives her. She lived a long and active life. She was a lover of nature and all God's creatures. Her flower gardens were well-known, and her cooking couldn't be matched. She enjoyed watching and feeding birds, hunting, hiking, and fishing on the bridge with her husband. She lived her life for God and the church in which she worshipped. She was a very active member of the Church of the Nazarene and always made sure that the church was full of good spirits and had fresh flowers every Sunday. She also did baking and cooking for any church social and taught Sunday school. Above all, she always welcomed her family with open arms and lots of love and food. She was loved by everyone and will be missed by all. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Earl Picard; by her children: Mary Kirby and her husband, Leslie, of Wilton, Maine, Linda McKinney of Newport, Robert Picard of Newport, and Carol Picard of Holland; by her grandchildren: Heidi, Tina, Chris, Scott, Shawn, Erin, Nathaniel, Casey, and Dawn Marie; and by several great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home on April 25 with the Reverend Paul Prince officiating. Interment followed at the Newport Center Cemetery. , 49, of Newport died after fighting a long courageous battle with heart disease. Mr. Ouimette was born in Barre on April 7, 1955, the son of Marcel and Laurette (Corriveau) Ouimette. He loved his family. On July 1, 1989, he married Helen Quirion. He enjoyed his old truck, his job at Waste U.S.A., and working and being in the woods. On May 6, 1967, she married Paul Lefebvre Sr., who predeceased her on February 23, 2000. She was a graduate of Orleans High School and dietary school in Burlington. She was the bookkeeper for Paul Lefebvre & Son and was a cook at Maple Lane Nursing Home for many years. She was a member of the Irasburg United Church. She enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens, crocheting, knitting, cooking for family gatherings, hunting, and fishing. , 78, a longtime resident of Stannard, died Friday, April 23, 2004, at Union House Nursing Home in Glover. Mrs. Gonyaw was born July 6, 1925, in Hardwick, the daughter of the late Harvey and Maude (Burnham) Dunbar. She attended Walden public schools and Danville High School. On June 19, 1945, she married Edward Nickleson Gonyaw in Stowe. In the early 1950s she and her husband purchased property in Stannard, on which they constructed a farmhouse and a barn and later operated a dairy farm until 1969. She had been employed by Stannard school as its hot lunch cook for several years. For most of her married life she was a homemaker raising her ten children. She was affiliated with the Greensboro Bend United Methodist Church. She was an advocate for the elderly and she received a lifetime achievement award from the Vermont Folklife Center for her quilting and woodworking. Other enjoyments include cooking, sewing, gardening, picking berries, hunting, and fishing. Survivors include her ten children: Gloria Powers of Glover, Dean Gonyaw of West Charleston, Linda Wells of Riverview, Florida, Danny Gonyaw of East Hardwick, Lloyd Gonyaw of Glover, Lee Gonyaw of Hardwick, Dale Gonyaw of Stannard, Rodney Gonyaw of Eden, Robert Gonyaw of Hardwick, and Dawn Gonyaw of LeCanto, Florida; 25 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Glen Dunbar of Greensboro Bend and Kenneth Dunbar of Richburg, New York; a sister, Nellie Staves, of Tupper Lake, New York; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services were held April 27 in Fairview Cemetery in Hardwick. Mack B. Converse

, 76, of Newport died in Newport on Wednesday, April 21, 2004. Mr. Converse was born in Orleans on November 10, 1927, the son of Hazen E. and Hazel (McLellan) Converse. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 and was a veteran of the Korean War. His duties included working with the Counter Intelligence Corps. While stationed in Germany in 1953 he joined American Legion Post No. 1 in Paris, France. He was a graduate of Tufts University and the New England Institute of Mortuary Science, both in Boston, Massachusetts. He owned and operated the Converse Funeral Homes in Newport, Orleans, Barton, and Derby Line from 1961 to 1972. In 1972 the Converse Funeral Home and Rushford Funeral Home merged. In 1973 the new Converse-Rushford Funeral Home was built on Sias Avenue and was the first modernized funeral home built in the state at that time. He was past president of the Vermont Funeral Directors Association in the early 1960s. He was a charter member of the Newport Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks No. 2155 and a 50-year member of the Newport Rotary Club. He was a member of the United Church of Newport, American Legion Newport Post No. 21, Masonic Order Newport Memphremagog Lodge No. 65 Free and Accepted Masons, and the Shriners. He was a longtime member of the Newport Country Club. He served on the North Country Hospital executive board, where he was past vice-president during the planning of the new hospital. On May 27, 1951, he married Pauline "Pauli" Donaldson, who survives him. He is also survived by his children Sandra Wing and her husband, David, of Bradenton, Florida, and David Converse and his friend, Patricia Kilday, of North Troy; by his grandchildren: Kelli Converse of Sunapee, New Hampshire, Kristin Wright and her husband, Michael, of Barton, Hazen Converse of Newport, and Emily and Derek Wing of Bradenton; by his former daughter-in-law Pam Converse of Newport; and by cousins in Vermont, Florida, and Texas. Funeral services were held April 26 with the Reverend Martha Peck officiating. Interment followed at Pleasantview Cemetery in Orleans. , 62, of Westfield, Massachusetts, died surrounded by his loving family on Monday, April 19, 2004, due to complications from a horseback riding injury. Mr. Applebee was born in Newport on May 11, 1941, and lived in Island Pond for many years. He raised his family and lived in Ludlow, Massachusetts, for 34 years before moving to Westfield. He was a longtime employee of Spector Freight in Chicopee, Massachusetts, and most recently was employed by Venture Vehicles in Westfield. He enjoyed the outdoors, horseback riding, country music, bowling, telling a good joke, socializing with family and friends, playing with his grandchildren, and an honest day's work. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Barbara (VonNieda) Applebee. He was a devoted father to three sons: Brian of New Fairfield, Connecticut, Barry of Palmer, Massachusetts, and Blaine of Florence, Massachusetts, to a daughter, Kristel, of Northampton, Massachusetts, and to their respective spouses. He was a wonderful grandfather to his eight cherished grandchildren. He is also survived by his father and stepmother, Riley and Elizabeth Applebee, of Newport; by a brother, Carlton Applebee, of Flagstaff, Arizona; and by a sister, Noreen Benjamin, of St. Johnsbury. He was predeceased by his mother, Ruth (Hill) Applebee; and by his brother Dexter. A celebration of Mr. Applebee's life was held April 24 at Helen Hills-Hills Chapel at Smith College in Northampton.
