, 72, of South Cairo, New York, died suddenly August 4, 2004, at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Hudson, New York, after a brief illness. Mr. Auger was born in Canada on August 19, 1931, and was a son of the late Alcide and Marierose (Elie) Auger. He has been a resident of South Cairo since 1980. He formerly lived in Evansville. He was a well-known logger in the area. He was a communicant of the Sacred Heart Church of Cairo, and loved dirt track racing at Lebanon Valley, New York, and being in the outdoors. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Estelle M. (Lussier) Auger, of South Cairo; by six children: Linda Blakslee and her husband, Brian, of Concord, Carole Selner and her husband, Joe, of Round Top, New York, Doris Shastany and her companion, John Fabrizio, of Acra, New York, Allen Auger and his wife, Barbara (Voulo), of Cairo, Diane Auger and her fiancée, Steven Bartholomew, of Cairo, and Rachel Campbell and her husband, Gary, of Round Top; by two sisters, Alma Boudreau and Mathilde Lareau, both of Canada; by 11 grandchildren; by many nieces and nephews; and by his loving dog, Flash. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by a sister, Monique Paradise. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on August 8 at the Sacred Heart Church of Cairo with the Reverend Father J. Nunan, pastor, as celebrant. Private cremation took place Monday at the Albany Rural Crematorium in Menands, New York. Burial of his cremains will be announced at a later date. Mary Johnston Rublee

, 85, of Newport died in Newport on Tuesday, August 10, 2004. Mrs. Rublee was born in Derby on April 5, 1919, the daughter of William and Mary (McBain) Johnston. She worked as a lab and x-ray technician for the former Orleans County Hospital and the Newport Clinic. She later worked as a receptionist and bookkeeper for Chittenden Bank. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Newport United Church. She was a loving, kind, and caring person who was helpful to everyone she met. In 1954 she married Dr. Clair Deforest Rublee, who predeceased her in June 1968. She is survived by her stepdaughter Elizabeth Rublee Scott of Newport; by six stepgrandchildren; and by six stepgreat-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother Gordon Johnston. Graveside services will be held Saturday, August 21, at Pine Grove Cemetery in Newport at 1 p.m., with the Reverend Martha Peck officiating. Interment will follow. of Nokesville, Virginia died suddenly in Virginia on Tuesday, August 10, 2004. Mr. Kelley was born and raised in Derby, a son of Clayton Kelley and Gertrude Daggett Kelley. He graduated from Derby Academy in 1952. He left Vermont to join the Army and was stationed in Georgia where he met his wife Mildred Truitt Kelley, who survives him. He is also survived by a daughter, Theresa Kelley Sutton, of Richmond Virginia; and by grandaughter Kelley Sutton Conners and her husband, Don, of Gainsville, Virginia. His pride and joy were his three great-grandaughters. He also leaves sisters Eileen Kelley Capps and her husband, DaWayne, of Oakland, Kentucky, Lucille Kelley Fennimore and her husband, Joe, of Trenton, New Jersey, and Suzanne Kelley Maple and her husband, Bob, of Morgan; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held in Virginia August 14, and burial was August 17 in Alabama. Maynard R. "Stub" Hilliard

, 80, of Orleans died in Rutland on Tuesday, August 10, 2004. Mr. Hilliard was born in Orleans on January 4, 1924, the son of Elmer and Greta (Dunham) Hilliard. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force and was a veteran of World War II. He worked as a supervisor at Ethan Allen in Orleans. He was a member and past commander of American Legion Orleans Post No. 23 and a past member of the Orleans Fire Department. He enjoyed playing pool, hunting, and boating and baseball. On October 19, 1951, he married Marlene Buzzell, who survives him. He is also survived by his children: Brent Hilliard and his wife, Wendy, of Newport, Candace LeBlanc and her husband, Maurice, of St. Albans, and Dawn Wilcox and her husband, Calvin, of Westmore; by his grandchildren: Tina McCartney, Jeremy LeBlanc, David LeBlanc, and Kristie Boylan; by his great-granddaughters Delanee and Caitlyn McCartney; by his sisters Verla Drake of Derby and Dorothy Whipple of Orleans; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his brothers: Warren, Clayton, and Marvin; and by his sister Verna Coburn. Funeral services will full military honors were held August 13 with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. Interment followed at Pleasantview Cemetery in Orleans. , 83, of Newport died in Newport on Thursday, August 12, 2004. Mr. Campbell was born in Irasburg on February 5, 1921, the son of Donat and Jean (Stewart) Campbell. He owned and operated a dairy farm in Orleans for many years. He then worked as a self-employed carpenter. He loved to build and play the violin. He married Orilla Demers, who predeceased him on March 20, 1999. He is survived by his son Maurice Campbell and his wife, Rachel, of Island Pond; by his brothers: Leopold of Newport, Fernand of Irasburg, and Raymond of Irasburg; by his sisters Gilbert Lanoue of Orleans and Jeannette Bently of Missouri; by five grandchildren; and by several great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter Rita Todd. Funeral services were held August 16 at Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with the Reverend Fred Barker officiating. , 79, of East Charleston, died in New Port Richey, Florida, on August 10, 2004. She was born in Newport on October 14, 1924, the daughter of Donald and Jennie (Lapierre) Smith. On January 25, 1947, Gloria married Jack B. Sloan, who survives her. Together they owned and operated the General Store in East Charleston for many years. She was a past selectman, assistant town clerk, and postal clerk for the town of Charleston. She also worked as a nurse's aid for the Orleans County Hospital. Gloria liked to help Jack with the store, auctions, antique business, and furniture refinishing and restoration. She was a member and past Matron of the Eastern Star North Chapter #25, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Newport Post #21, and a member of the Ladies Shrine. She and Jack liked to travel and spent winters in Florida, where she was also a member of the Seabees Ladies Auxiliary Island #17. Besides her husband Jack, Gloria is survived by her mother, Jennie Smith of Hudson, Florida, her children, Gerald "Mike" Sloan of North Carolina; Cherie Sloan and her special friend, Arland Stone Jr., of Glover; James Sloan and his wife, Kathryn, of Newport; and Jack "Pat" Sloan and his special friend, Marie, of Newport, her brothers, Donald A. Smith and his wife, Priscilla, of New York; Milton Smith and his wife, Janet, of California; Conrad Smith and his family of California; and Charles Smith and his wife, Jeannine, of California; her sister-in-law, Geraldine Tumminelli of Meuthen, Massachusetts, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many special cousins and their families. died in his sleep on August 5, 2004. He was born April 11, 1915. He is survived by his daughter Jennifer Martin and her husband, Keith, of Toronto; by his daughter Brenda Makarov and her husband, Vitali, of Montreal; and by his son Dr. Scott Geddes, and his wife, Valerie, of Cambridge, Ontario; by his grandchildren, Ruston, Kelsey and Timothy Martin, Maxim and Maria Makarov and Jay, Christopher and Allison Geddes. Mr. Lamb is also survived by his sister Barbara Ingraham of Northport, Long Island. He was predeceased by his brother Sidney and sisters Martha McLean and Peggy Montgomery. Born in Montreal and raised in Stanstead, Quebec, Mr. Lamb attended Lower Canada College in Montreal and later Bishop's and McGill universities, and studied law. He joined the Black Watch and served overseas as a major in World War II. After the war, Mr. Lamb returned to Montreal and joined the legal firm, Lafleur Brown, and rose to senior partner. In December 1969 he was appointed judge of the Superior Court of Quebec and presided on both criminal and civil sides. Upon his retirement in 1990, he enjoyed an illustrious second career staying active and fit as "groundskeeper" of his property in Derby. Adored by all who knew him, Mr. Lamb was an extraordinary man whose brilliant mind and irreverent sense of humor remained unfailing until his last day. A private service was held on August 9, at Mount Royal Cemetery Chapel. Burial of the ashes will take place in the fall. , 87, of Newport died peacefully August 12, 2004, in Farmington, Maine. She was born January 8, 1917, in South Stuckley, Quebec, a daughter of Harmidas and Leontine (Decelle) Allard. She married Wallace A. Roberts who predeceased her in 1993. Mrs. Roberts had lived in Lyndonville and for the past 40 years she lived in Newport. At one time she was a seamstress for a glove factory in St. Johnsbury. She is survived by a son, Russell Whitney, and his wife, Sheila, of Corinth, Maine, and by three grandchildren: Heidi Poole and her husband, Mark; Tina Meserve and her husband, Jeff; and Christopher Whitney and his wife, Brenda. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held on August 17 at the Lyndon Center Cemetery in Lyndon Center with the Reverend Paul Prince officiating. Interment will follow.

, 85, of St. Cloud, Florida, died August 12, 2004, at Orlando Regional Medical Center. He lived in Milford, New Hampshire, for 24 years before retiring to St. Cloud, Florida in 1984. He was employed by Ingersoll-Rand of Nashua, New Hampshire, for 25 years. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946. He loved to dance, play cards and socialize with friends at the new St. Cloud Senior Center, which he really loved. He was a member of St. Thomas Aqunias Catholic Church, St. Cloud, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3227 in St. Cloud, American Legion Post #80 in St. Cloud, and the Elks Lodge #1873 in Kissimmee. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Theresa L. (Buskey) Cote of St. Cloud, son Maurice R. Cote (Cheryl) of Milford, New Hampshire, two daughters, Maria T. Riley of Milford, New Hampshire, Sharon DuPont (Philip) of Wilton, New Hampshire, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. , 74, of West Glover died suddenly on Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at his home. Mr. Young was born on March 8, 1930, in St. Johnsbury, the youngest child of Lawrence and Nellie (Dewing) Young. He was raised on Springdale Farm in West Glover. He attended Beach School in West Glover, Barton Academy, and state agricultural school in Randolph. After school, he returned to the family farm where his parents and grandparents had farmed before him. In 1950 he married Arlene Perkins of Westmore. They raised seven children. In addition to milking cows, he sugared, cut Christmas trees, plowed snow, hauled milk, and cut pulp. Whatever he was doing, he rarely passed up an opportunity for conversation. Known throughout his life for his storytelling talent, during the 1970s he began writing a column for the Chronicle based on his everyday experiences. A compilation of the columns was published in 1977, entitled Loudon Young, Off Main Street, West Glover, VT. He also sold advertising for the paper for years. He was in his element in the job, traveling from business to business, visiting with people, swapping stories, jokes, and news. He was an avid reader and loved to pick berries. He served the town of Glover in a variety of elected positions, including 24 years as a lister (beginning at the age of 21), 12 years as school director, and three years as selectman. Among his contributions were the insight and humor he brought to many a meeting. He is survived by his wife, Arlene; by his children: John and his partner, Jan Russell, of Charleston, South Carolina, Edward of West Glover, Georgia of Glover, Dean of West Glover; Darlene Andrews and her husband, Ned, of Glover, Arthur and his wife, Tara, of West Glover; by his seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: Nathan Todd and his wife, Sarah, and their daughter Abigail of northern New York, Jennie Young of South Carolina, Ben Todd and his wife, Kelly, and their son Gabrial of Barton, Katie Young of Essex Junction, Christopher Todd of Glover, Meg Andrews of Glover, and Zoe Young of West Glover. Two more great grandchildren are expected this fall. He is also survived by his half-brother Laurice Young of Connecticut; by his sister-in-law Barbara Young of Coventry; and by nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Richard; by his sister Barbara Gagner; and by his half-brother Earl Young. Prior to his retirement in 1990, he had been employed as a postal clerk for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 83 in Branford, Connecticut, and the East Haven Lion's Club. He was an Army veteran of World War II. , 71, of Waterford, Virginia, died in Barton on Monday, August 16, 2004. Mrs. Matt was born in Oakland, California, on August 25, 1932, a daughter of Manning and Frances (Hatch) Park. She was an elementary schoolteacher in Medford Lakes, New Jersey. She loved horses and raised thoroughbreds in Virginia for 30 years until 2003. She was active in the 8th Air Force Squad reunions and loved to play bridge. She married John Matt on December 28, 1956. He predeceased her in 1995. She is survived by her daughters Jill Czelusta and her husband, Pastor Larry, of Barton and Holly Grody and her husband, Don, of Evergreen, Colorado; by her grandchildren: Zephrine and Leanne Czelusta and Evin and Lincoln Grody; by her brother Warren Park; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her granddaughter Molly. A memorial service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on Friday, August 27, at 9 a.m. Interment will follow. She graduated from Lisbon Falls High School. She is survived by her husband, Gerald, to whom she had been married for 55 years. She was retired from Ethan Allen Manufacturing of Island Pond. She held memberships with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and American Legion Post No. 80 Auxilary of Island Pond. She was a member of Lady of St. Anne's of Claremont, New Hampshire. She enjoyed fishing, sewing, card playing, traveling, singing, and yodeling. She was an avid bingo player, and enjoyed traveling to casinos. She lived life to the fullest and was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by five children: Joan LeClaire and her husband, Lorne, of Buxton, Maine, Jean Graveline and her husband, Duane, of Derby, Phyllis Ming and her husband, Gary, of Island Pond, Rita Major and her husband, Gary, of Pensacola, Florida, and Rena Latouche and her fiancé, Mark Ellingwood, of Newark; by the following grandchildren: Kirk and his wife, Jennifer, Paul, John, Matthew, Jennifer, Jenny, Nick, Tiffany, and Thomas; by the following great-grandchildren: Kyle, Allison, Andrew, Kaleb, Brianna, Michelle, Alexandra, and Madison; by brothers- and sisters-in-law; and by several nieces and nephews. He was born in Newport on April 2, 1969. He served in the Vermont Army National Guard.
