, 71, of Maple Street, East Concord, Vt., died Wednesday evening, Aug. 18, 2004, at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center, Lyndonville, after a long illness. Mrs. Berry was born in East Concord, Vt., Dec. 22, 1932, the daughter of Harry and Lilla (Smith) Streeter. Nila attended schools in East Concord and Concord. She married Walter Berry Oct. 9, 1949, at her parent's home in East Concord. She was an organist, choir director and taught Sunday school at the East Concord Methodist Church for over 20 years. She was a long-time member of the United Methodist Women's Group. She worked as a paraeducator in the Concord School District for several years, enjoying her love for children. She played drums in the Grant Nichols Fife & Drum Corp and sang in the Northeast Kingdom Choir. Nila was a 4-H leader for 15-plus years and many hours were spent working in the 4-H Hall and Dairy Booth at the Lancaster Fair. She had a special love for music, spending many hours with her brother Carl and son Tim and their families, playing piano, guitar, harmonica and singing. Her special talent was passed on to her children and grandchildren, and these special family sing-a-longs will always be remembered. Walt and Nila spent the past 23 summers at their summer home in Miles Pond, enjoying all their family, special friends and neighbors. Nila enjoyed boating, fishing, loon watching and her flower gardens. Many hours were spent, chatting and drinking coffee at the ladies "coffee hour" at Miles Pond, catching up on all the "news." She also enjoyed hunting, crocheting, knitting, cooking and reading. Her favorite vacationing spot was Daytona Beach, Fla., which she did several times with her family. Nila was especially proud of the fact that all six of her brothers served in the Armed Forces, along with her loving husband. Her brother Glenn was killed in action in the China Burma Theatre. Nila was a very special person, always enjoying doing for others and she will always be remembered and greatly missed by all. Family members include her husband Walter of East Concord; three children, Brenda Stone of Lancaster, Barbara Olden and her husband Norman of Concord, Vt., and Timothy Berry and his wife Donna of North Concord, Vt.; grandchildren, Shawn Olden and his wife Amy of Concord, Vt., Karen Thomas and her husband Rob of Lunenburg, Kendra Cantin and friend Russell Bell of Stark, Kara Cantin and friend Kevin Lufkin of Maidstone, Jamie Olden of Lunenburg, Michael Berry of North Concord, and Raynah Berry of North Concord; special granddaughter Cheyrisse Boone and her husband Robert of Sherman, Conn.; great-grandchildren, Baylee and Cassidy Olden, Tyler and Tara Thomas, and special great-granddaughter, Brieanna Brown; two brothers, Leslie "Gob" Streeter and his wife Marian of Lunenburg, and Prescott "Putt" Streeter and his wife Betty of Merrimack, N.H.; a sister, Marion Spriggs of Merrimack, N.H.; a brother-in-law, Herbert Berry of East Concord; two sisters-in-law, Carol Streeter of Lunenburg, and Helene Streeter of Kalamazoo, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her stepfather, Walter Webb; four brothers, Glenn Streeter, Bernard Streeter, Clifford Streeter, and Carl Streeter; and a granddaughter, Dawn Marie Olden. Memorial visiting hours were held at the Bailey Funeral Home, Friday evening, Aug. 20, from 6-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 21, at 2 p.m., at the East Concord Methodist Church. The Rev. Henry E. Cheney, pastor, will co-officiate with the Rev. Gerry Piper of Orleans. Burial will follow in the Overlook Cemetery, East Concord. , 34, of Manchester, Vt., passed away Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center due to complications from alcoholic pancreatitis. He was born July 19, 1970, in Bennington, Vt., the son of John Belden Hawkins and Mary (Woods) Hawkins. Michael graduated from Burr and Burton Seminary in 1988, and attended Champlain College. Michael thoroughly enjoyed his work in retail management, both for Timberland and at the time of his death, Bass Shoes in Manchester, Vt. He enjoyed raising his daughter, listening to and collecting music, especially his beloved Grateful Dead, sports and snowboarding. He is survived by his daughter, Sierra Dickie of Shaftsbury; his mother, of Manchester; his sister, Debbie Etzler and her husband and son of Clarendon, Vt.; and his brother, Bill Hawkins and his wife Marie of Alstead, N.H. He was predeceased by his father, John. There will be a time of remembrance and celebration of Michael's life Saturday, Aug. 28, at 1 p.m., at his mother's home on Cass Terrace in Manchester Center, Vt. Burial will take place Monday, Aug. 30, at 10 a.m., in Lyndon Center Cemetery, Lyndon Center, Vt., with the Rev. Joan Vincent officiating. , 76, of Bath, N.H., died Aug. 18, 2004, at the Grafton County Nursing Home, North Haverhill, following an extended illness. He was born in Woodsville, N.H., June 28, 1928, a son of Milton H. and Gladys (Ross) MacDonald Sr. He was a longtime Woodsville resident before moving to Bath in 2000. Sonny formerly owned and operated Mac's Dry Cleaners in Woodsville. He operated a general contracting and construction business with his son, Jim, as well as being an inventor and having several items patented. Sonny was also involved with the development of Mt. Lakes, a seasonal and recreational community in the town of Haverhill. During the late 1950s and continuing into the '60s and early 1970s, Sonny and the late Karl Bruckner, Esq., organized a youth ski program, initially at a local ski slope and later expanding to the Mittersill Ski Area in Franconia Notch. He was also an active supporter of Woodsville youth recreation programs and Woodsville High School athletics. He was a founding member of the Woodsville Area Booster Club, a communicant of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, and a former member of the Cohase Lions Club and St. Johnsbury, Vt., Elks Club. A devoted family man, he enjoyed his grandchildren and being able to care for his grandson Tracy. Survivors include his wife, Bette J. (Wilson) MacDonald of Bath, to whom he was married on Nov. 23, 1957; two sons, Rodney R. MacDonald Mann and his wife Joanne of Woodsville, and James W. MacDonald and his wife Lynn of Fairlee, Vt.; two daughters, Sandra L. Fortier and her husband Wayne of Woodsville, and Cynthia M. Lang and her husband Bryan of Bath; 13 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; a brother, John B. "Bart" MacDonald of Zepherhills, Fla.; and one sister, Corinne M. Lighthall of Estero, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A calling hour will be on Tuesday, Aug. 24, from 7-8 p.m., at Ricker Funeral Home, 1 Birch Street, Woodsville, N.H. , 57, of Winter Street, Groveton, N.H., died Wednesday morning, Aug. 18, 2004, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon. Mrs. Newton was born in Barton, Vt., Feb. 11, 1947. She was raised in Barton and later resided in New Jersey for many years before moving to Groveton. She and her husband of 18 years, Raymond R. "Sonny" Newton, have been employed as custodians of the Guildhall School and Essex County Courthouse for many years. Sandy loved animals including exotic birds and her dog "Dolly." Family members include her husband of Groveton; three stepsons, Wayne Newton of Groveton, Neil Newton of Brunswick, and Kevin Newton of Lyman; two stepdaughters, Beverly Howland of Groveton, and Patricia Howland of Whitefield; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son, Warren Clarkson; her mother, Alberta Gleason; and a brother, Frank Gleason. of South Wheelock Road, Lyndon, died Saturday afternoon, Aug. 21, 2004, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., surrounded by her family, at the age of 73. She was born May 3, 1931, in Kirby, Vt., daughter of George and Lida (Croteau) Surridge Sr. Belle graduated from Lyndon Institute, Class of 1949. On July 2, 1949, she married Arland D. Noyes. Belle worked for the U.S. Postal Service for over 35 years, and was the post master in Sheffield for many of those years. Prior to that, she worked at Vt. Tap and Die Co. in Lyndonville as a secretary during the 1950s and 1960s. She also owned and operated Belle's Gun Shop on the South Wheelock Road. Memberships include being a director of the Hand to Hand Christmas Program in her area; she served as secretary and treasurer of the St. Johnsbury Gun Club; was a past officer and news editor of NAPUS (postal service); NRA member; and was a guardian for many people in need. During tax season, she prepared income taxes for people. Belle enjoyed people and always put others before herself, helping in any way she could. She loved to cook, enjoyed country music, playing Bingo, but most of all, spending time with her family and friends. Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Arland Noyes of Lyndon; one son, Carroll "Bub" Noyes and Sharon of Wheelock; one daughter, Linda McDonald and her husband Jim of East Burke; two grandchildren, Casey and Ryan McDonald, both of Burlington; her mother, Lida Surridge of Kirby; one brother, Paul Surridge and Niki Lumi of Wheelock; four sisters, Ethel Knapp and her husband Howie of Connecticut, Betty Hudson and her husband Erton of Florida, Helen Gilman and Ron Sherburn of Lyndon, and Diane Surridge of Florida; four aunts, Evelyn Santy of Massachusetts, Helena Cushman of Kirby, Teresa "Flossie" Lesperance of Kirby, and Nellie Surridge of New Hampshire; three sisters-in-law, Edna Surridge of Lunenburg, Lucy Surridge of Barnet, and Rena McGinnis and her husband Richard of New Mexico; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. He was a World War II veteran and received the Bronze Star. Employed by AT & T, he retired in 1978 and enjoyed golf, ceramics, reading, music, traveling and his many friends. , 64, of St. Johnsbury, died Saturday evening, Sept. 18, 2004, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury. She was born in Sutton, Vt., July 11, 1940, daughter of the late Donald O. and Beatrice (Labor) Larocque Sr. Lucy was schooled in Barnet and attended Mt. St. Joseph Academy in St. Johnsbury. Lucy was an active member of the VFW Post 793 auxiliary in St. Johnsbury and was a past Vermont State President, National Council Member, and Vermont State Secretary. She was also active in the American Legion Post 30 of Lyndon for many years. Known as the family historian for the Larocque family, Lucy was instrumental in the coordination of the University of Vermont Medical School's study of the Larocque Syndrome Blood Disease. She loved spending time with her three grandsons, her family and her friends. Lucy also loved her feline companions who brought her much joy. Survivors include her two children, Barbara A. Machell of Lyndonville, and Buddy Machell and his wife Shelly Cole-Machell of West Burke; three grandsons, Justin, Jacob and Ethan; two brothers, Leigh Larocque and his wife Beverly of Passumpsic, and Dale Kendall and his wife Phyllis of East Barnet; two sisters, Dorothy Rossier and her husband Sam of Sutton, and Muriel Rose of Jamestown, N.Y.; her aunt, Dorothy Sicard of Barton; her uncle, William Malshuk of Irasburg; two sisters-in-law, Mona Larocque of Gorham, N.H., and Sharon Larocque of North Carolina; many nieces and nephews; and her extended VFW family of over 30 years. , 50, passed away after a lengthy battle with lung disease at her Concord home Sunday evening, Aug. 22, 2004. She was born Dec. 16, 1953, in Lancaster, N.H., the daughter of Donald and Pearl (Flynn) Phillips. She was raised by her mother with the steadfast help of her nana, Gladys Flynn. She graduated from White Mountains Regional High School in 1971. Claire was first and foremost a loving wife and mother and was handy with crocheting and crafts. She worked as a sales clerk for Jim and Meridith Young at the Farmer's Daughter before becoming disabled, and had previously worked for the Concord School system. She is survived by her husband, George; son, Jay Bona of Burke; daughter, Joy Bona and her fiance Jeff Atherton of Underhill; her mother, Pearl Phillips of Lancaster; two brothers, Roger Phillips and Kenneth Phillips, both of Lancaster; her mother-in-law, Esther Bona of North Concord; and her Bona in-laws and their families. A gathering of friends and family will be held at the Bona home, 1597 West Main St., just west of Concord village, Wednesday, from 5-7 p.m., concluding with a brief time of reflections, remembrances and prayer. She was born in Plainfield, VT, Nov. 25, 1917, the daughter of Nelson Wormwood and Bessie Marion (Batchelder) Welch. Mrs. Dunn had lived in Woodsville for the past 2-1/2 years, but was a former longtime resident of East Ryegate, VT. She served the town of Ryegate as tax collector and attended the former East Ryegate Presbyterian Church and attended the Ryegate Corner Presbyterian Church at the time of her death. She had also worked at the Birchwood Motel in Wells River. She was predeceased by her husband, Carlos Dunn, in 1970; and six brothers, Robert, Gordon, Francis, Harry, Joseph, and Richard. Also a son-in-law, Sheldon Vance. Survivors include three daughters, Bessie Choate and her husband Carroll of Twin Mtn., NH, Carlene Boomhower and her husband Gordon, and Barbara Vance, both of East Ryegate, VT; nine grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 10 great-great-grandchildren; a brother Stanley Welch of Phippsburg, Maine; and several nieces and nephews. , of Lyndonville, died suddenly Tuesday morning, Aug. 24, 2004, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital at the age of 64. She was born in Suffield, Conn., March 30, 1940, the daughter of George and Gertrude (McKee) Austin. Doris worked for St. Johnsbury Trucking Co. in the computer department for over 27 years. Mrs. John enjoyed crafts, reading, crossword puzzles and going to yard sales in the area. She was always ready to travel and enjoyed touring the backroads of the Northeast. On April 25, 1959, she married Harry John who survives her in Lyndonville. Other survivors include two sons, Douglas and his wife Barbara John of Lyndonville and Michael John of East Burke; a sister, Joyce and her husband Clarence Hardy of Orange, Mass.; two granddaughters, Michelle and Danielle. , 70, of Springhill, Fla., died Aug. 22, 2004, at his home in Springhill surrounded by his family. Wayne was born May 28, 1934, in St. Johnsbury, Vt., the eldest son of Wayne and Dorothy Pashby Newell Ferrier. Wayne worked at Pratt & Whiteny in Connecticut for many years until retirement when he moved to Florida. He is survived by his wife, Carolee Collins Newell; and two daughters, Coleen Lablanc and Jody James and her husband Charles; three granddaughters and one grandson, Aaron and Robin Groff and Jessica and Cassandra Lablanc; three brothers, Millard Newell and his wife Cecilia, Thayer Newell and his wife Shirley "Che" Newell and friend Leann, all of St. Johnsbury; three sisters, Elaine Newell Nichols and her husband Stanley, Claire Newell Parks and her husband Martin, and Marlene Newell Mayhew and her husband John of Vernon, Conn.; several nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and nephews. , 16, of Westmore, beloved son of Elaine Cashin and the late Norman Earl Woolard, died suddenly Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, in Westmore. He was born Oct. 14, 1987, in Southbridge, Mass. Norman was a junior at Lake Region High School in Orleans. He enjoyed four-wheeling, water skiing, and hunting and fishing. He played high school basketball, golf and soccer. Norman enjoyed making people laugh through his jokes and impersonations as he always had a smile. , 55, of Littleton, N.H., passed away Aug. 23, 2004, after a long illness. Tim was born in Littleton, a son to John and Norma (Willey) MacIver on Jan. 26, 1949. Tim attended area schools and served in the U.S. Army Vietnam Tour of Duty. He was a past commander as well as a life member of the VFW Howard Shawney Post 816 in Littleton. He was also a life member and past officer of the Alderbrooke Gun Club. Tim retired as superintendent of the Abington Group in Portsmouth, N.H. He had a passion for fly-fishing and bird hunting. Surviving family members include his wife, Carol MacIver of Littleton; three sons, Duncan and Jenn MacIver of Monroe, N.H., A1C Angus MacIver of Hill Air Force in Utah, and Iain LeClere of Hampton Falls, N.H.; one grandson, James MacIver; two brothers, Stephen and Linda MacIver of Littleton, and John and Sara MacIver of Littleton; one sister, Bonnie and Dick Trahan of Littleton; and many nieces and nephews. She was born Nov. 11, 1919, in Bloomfield, Vt., the daughter of Daniel and Phoebe (Bergeron) Daley. She was raised in Bloomfield and was a graduate of North Stratford High School. Mrs. Fortin was a graduate of Brightlook Hospital School of Nursing in St. Johnsbury. Mrs. Fortin was employed as the director of nursing at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury prior to her retirement in 1986. She was a lifelong resident of the St. Johnsbury area, and wintered in Holly Hill, Fla. She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, Omer J. Fortin, in 1996; and a son, Michael. , of Danville, died early Friday morning, Aug. 27, 2004, in Lebanon, N.H., at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center at the age of 92. She was born in Kingsey, Canada, Dec. 3, 1911, the daughter of Earl and Ethel (Oakley) Noble. Mabel had worked at Glovers on Railroad Street in St. Johnsbury for several years. She loved to garden especially working with flowers. On Oct. 28, 1944, she married Newton "Jim" Page, who survives her in Danville. Mabel will be also missed by her niece Marilyn Page and nephew Robert Page from Brattleboro, neighbors and friends. She was predeceased by her brother Clifford Noble. A graveside service will be held at Danville Green Cemetery Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, at 1 p.m. with Jane H. Larrabee officiating. There will be no visiting hours. , 49, of Brownington, died at his home, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004. Curtis was a local logger and beloved husband of Lorene Curtis. He was born on Dec. 19, 1954, in Newport, the oldest son of John and Ruth (Barrup) Curtis of Brownington. Curtis lived his entire life in Brownington. In 1996 he married Lorene Liberty of Brownington. An avid deer hunter, he was especially proud of his family's tradition of being the first hunters to hang a deer in the "hanging tree on 5A." Fair weather or foul would find him doing what he loved best - logging. In 1998 he was able to purchase his John Deer Skidder, which he dubbed "easy money". He never did anything half way as is reflected in his Brownington home and property. Besides his wife, he is survived by his father, John Curtis; his brothers, Benny Curtis and his wife, Karol, Lyle "Boggie" Curtis and his wife, Becky; his sister, Penny Wheeler and her husband, Scott; his step-children, Christopher Chicoine and family of Bakersfield, Deborah Williams and family of Newport, Patrick Chicoine and family of Atlantic Beach, Fla., Andrea Smith and family of West Charleston, Katrina Mallette and family of St. Albans, Alicia Glodgett and family of Hanover, Mass., and April Elliott and family of Newport; his nieces and nephews, Cory, Kelly, Casey, Curtis, Nicholas, Karissa, Emily, Marissa and little Cory; his uncles, Dallas Curtis, Arnold Curtis, Sherrill Curtis, Robert Curtis, Everett Barrup and Jim Barrup; his aunts, Margaret Planter, June Williams, Leora Whiting, Rachel Pray and Sherry Barrup; his special friends, John "Boy" Stacey, Bobby LaCasse and Brian Parenteau, and his dog "Otter." He was predeceased by his mother, Ruth Curtis, and by his brother, Robin Curtis. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Sept. 2' at the Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Home, Darling Hill Road, Newport (formerly Sias Ave.) at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Fred Barker officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 12 p.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. Interment will follow at the Hillside cemetery in East Charleston. , 78, of Littleton, N.H., passed away at the Littleton Regional Hospital on Aug. 30, 2004. She was the beloved wife of Daniel P. Nute for over 54 years. A native of Littleton, she was born on March 11, 1926, the daughter of Meddie and Elmina (Taupier) Perry. She was educated in the local school system and graduated from Littleton High School in 1943. Mrs. Nute served as a personal assistant to physicians in the local area throughout her life, as well as in other medical support services for the Littleton Hospital. She also participated in the writing and documentation of local area history, served as a secretary to the Littleton School Board, Littleton High School Reunion Association, and was an active volunteer at the Littleton Area Senior Center. Her interests included music, golfing, painting, and being surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She will be lovingly remembered for her caring personality and warm sense of humor. She is survived by her husband, Daniel P. Nute of Littleton, N.H.; two daughters, Janice Nute Severance and husband, Melvin, of Concord, N.H., and Deborah (Debbie) Cronin and husband, Kevin, of Manchester, N.H.; two sons, David Nute and wife, Linda, of Bedford, N.H., and Jeffrey Nute and wife, Pamela, of Littleton, N.H.; four grandchildren, Allison and Samuel Nute, of Bedford, N.H., and Jocelyn and Emily Nute of Littleton, N.H. Two brothers, Bertram Perry and Guy Perry predeceased her. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 1 at 10 a.m. at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. John Fleming as Celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Rose Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Littleton Area Senior Center, Cottage Street, Littleton, NH 03561.
