, 48, of Bunker Hill Street, Lancaster, N.H., died suddenly Wednesday morning, Jan. 14, 2004, in Rumford, Maine. Mr. Cannon was born in Leonia, N.J., June 29, 1955, the son of Charles and Elizabeth (Widman) Cannon. Raised in Leonia, he was a 1973 graduate of Leonia High School. He went on to earn a bachelor's degree at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Indiana, Pa. After a year of research work he was employed by Ondeo Nalco of Naperville, Ill. He was employed there for 25 years and then went into semi-retirement to spend more time with family. He continued to work as a private consultant. Spending time at his log cabin at Maidstone Lake, Vt., and collecting pocket watches brought him great enjoyment. He will be remembered as a man with a big heart who loved his family and extended family along with friends and colleagues. He was a good husband and father and was well respected in his profession. Family members include his wife, Marianne (Woodward) Cannon of Lancaster; a daughter, Megan Cannon, 13; a son, Ryan Cannon, 11; his parents, Charles and Elizabeth Cannon of Palm Beach Shores, Fla.; four brothers, Stephen Cannon and his wife Cindy of Washington Township, N.J., Timothy Cannon and his wife Cindy of Larchmont, N.Y., Daniel Cannon and his wife Mary of Spring Lake, N.J., and Matthew Cannon of Sterling, Va.; three sisters, Christine Gianonni and her husband George of Granby, Conn., Patricia Dimmit and her husband William of Harriman, N.Y., and Bridget Cannon of Spokane, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held Friday afternoon and evening, Jan. 16, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., at the Bailey Funeral Home, 210 Main Street, Lancaster, N.H. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday morning at 11 at All Saints Church, 163 Main Street, Lancaster. The Reverend Raymond Ball, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be held in the spring at Summer Street Cemetery, Lancaster. , 89, of Island Pond, died peacefully Jan. 17, 2004, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born March 14, 1914, in St. Giles, Quebec, a daughter of Nicholas and Rose (Bagley) O'Gorman. In 1933 she graduated from St. Mary's Academy in Island Pond. On Jan. 15, 1946 she married Kenneth Riggie who predeceased her April 29, 1987. During World War II Mrs. Riggie worked in Maine and Connecticut in the shipyards. She was also a teacher's aide at Brighton Elementary School in Island Pond and she was a homemaker for several years. She was a communicant of St. James the Greater Catholic Church in Island Pond. She was a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 80 of Island Pond, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and a former member of the Daughters of Isabella. Mrs. Riggie is survived by two children, Mary Ann Riggie and her husband Robert W. Fisher of Newark, and Joseph Riggie of Island Pond. She is also survived by a sister, Bertha O'Gorman of Island Pond; and by the following grandchildren, Kyra S. Riggie of Block Island, R.I., Mielle S. Riggie and her husband Ted Broadwater of Seattle, Wash., Rachel DeGeorge and her husband Milton DeGeorge Jr. of Madison, Wis., and Nicholas S. Riggie of Watertown, Conn. She is survived by a great-grandson, Lawrence "Lars" DeGeorge. Mrs. Riggie was predeceased by 10 brothers and sisters. , 98, of St. Johnsbury, passed away Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehab Center. She was born in Montpelier Aug. 20, 1905, a daughter of Warren and Ruth (Brown) Ducham. She was one of six children, all have predeceased her except a sister, Carol McMaster of Springfield, Mass. Helen grew up in the St. Johnsbury and Lyndon area, attending the local schools and St. Johnsbury Academy. Helen married Murray Learmouth, who preceded her in death in 1979. Both she and Murray spent most of their lives in Lyndonville. Helen endeared herself to many of her friends, neighbors and relatives by assisting them in times of sickness, emergencies and events requiring health and homemaking assistance. Helen was appreciated by everyone. She was also employed by Maple Grove Inc. of St. Johnsbury, where she successfully worked as a candy packer until her retirement after 34 years. She made many friends at Maple Grove. Helen was also a helpmate to Murray around "fair time" as they were involved in harness racing for four decades, having raised and trained several trotters and pacers. They were involved in the Snow Pac Race on Washington's birthday in Lyndonville as well as the local fairs in Lyndonville, Barton, Lancaster and Champlain Valley. Survivors include two beloved daughters, Muriel Emma Heon and her husband Robert E. of Springfield, Mass., and Betty Ely of Lyndonville; a sister-in-law, Olivine Ducham Perrault of Lyndonville; a brother-in-law, Gordon Learmouth and his wife Persis of White River Jct.; four grandchildren, Brian and Gary Ely, and Linda Newland and Robert E. Heon Jr.; 10 great-grandchildren, Jeremy and Gregg Ely, Patricia, Philip and Evan Newland, Heather and Jessica Ely, James, Robbie and Hannah Heon; two great-great-grandchildren, Lucas and Natalie Ely; also numerous nieces and nephews who will remember her dearly. The family will receive friends Tuesday, Jan. 20, between the hours of 4-7 p.m., at the Guibord Funeral Home, located at the corner of Main and Center streets in Lyndonville. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 11 a.m., at St. Elizabeth's Church, with the Rev. Stephen Nichols celebrant. , 84, of Kirby, Vt., formerly of Detroit, Mich., died peacefully at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndonville, Vt., Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004. She was born Oct. 31, 1919, the daughter of the late Frank and Anna (Konier) Wolny. She lived with her daughter Beverly Hood and son-in-law Vaughn and grandchildren Sophie and Charlie Hood in Kirby, Vt. She was also survived by her sons and their families in California, Robert and his wife Jane and grandson Bryce; her son and his wife Pat; and by her son, Tim Pinkos. A memorial celebration of her life will be held Saturday, Feb. 14, at 4 p.m., at the funeral home. , 90, of Sugar Hill, N.H., died peacefully Jan. 14, 2004, at the Lafayette Health Care Center, Franconia, N.H. She had resided there for the past eight years. Marion was born Dec. 24, 1913, in Dorchester, Mass., and was the daughter of Arthur and Amy (Coman) Hawks. She was graduated from Hudson High School (Massachusetts) in 1930 and was one of three graduates to present an essay. She entered Simmons College (Boston, Mass.) at the age of 16 and was graduated from Simmons College in 1934 with a degree in social work. She also studied at the New York School of Social Work. She married William C. Sullivan Jan. 5, 1946 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Lancaster, Mass., and subsequently spent the next 25 years living in Maryland, while her husband worked for the FBI in Washington, D.C. It was there that she raised her family. In 1971, Marion and her husband retired to Sugar Hill. She truly loved this area and became involved in many volunteer activities. She was an avid reader and served as librarian of the Sugar Hill Library for many years. She was a member of the Willing Workers and served as participant, treasurer and eventually president. Marion was also on the board of directors of the Bancroft House in Franconia for many years. Marion was a beloved mother and grandmother. Her greatest love was for her children and grandchildren, and she found tremendous joy in being part of their lives. She was predeceased by her husband, William; and a brother, Melvin. She leaves a daughter, Joann Tuttle of Glastonbury, Conn.; two sons, William Joseph Sullivan of Sugar Hill, and Andrew Hawks Sullivan of Manchester, N.H. She also leaves four grandchildren, Elizabeth Coman Tuttle, Christopher William Tuttle, Theresa Marie Sullivan, and Kathleen Marion Sullivan. She also leaves her beloved friend of 73 years, Elizabeth B. Andrews of Huntington, Long Island, N.Y. Funeral services were held at St. Michael's Church in Hudson, Mass., Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at 11 a.m. Those who wish to give something in her memory are asked to consider giving a donation to the Lafayette Health Care Center, Franconia, N.H. Marion always thought of others before herself, and would derive great joy from knowing that a life at this health center could be made easier because of her.

, 80, of 144 Brainerd St., Danville, died peacefully Sunday evening, Jan. 18, 2004, in her home in Danville after struggling for eight years with Alzheimer's disease and its resulting complications. Gerry was lovingly cared for at home until the end by her family with the assistance for the last two and a half years of five part-time helpers: Pamela Bowser, Christine Tillotson, Deborah Stresing, Deborah Peck and Melody Peterson. Gerry was born Sept. 12, 1923, in Dexter, Maine, the daughter of Frank and Laura (Howell) Page. She attended Dexter schools and earned her GED diploma in 1989 at the age of 66. She served during World War II in the Womans Army Corp (WAC) from October 1944 to July 1946 initially training at the School for Bakers and Cooks in Louisiana and subsequently with the Army Postal Service in New York City. On Dec. 21, 1946, she married Gordon W. Bess, a career Army soldier at Fort Amador, Panama Canal Zone. She moved with husband and family to various duty stations in the Canal Zone, the United States and overseas in Taiwan. After her husband's retirement from active duty in 1959, they lived in Meriden, Conn., until 1968 when they settled permanently in Danville. Gerry was an especially outgoing and caring person who loved being a part of the community and being a tireless helper to friends and neighbors. Her helping and creative hands were seldom idle and she brought endless good cheer and enthusiasm to all the tasks she participated in. Gerry was an active member of the Pythian Sisters, Danville Women's Club and the Danville Methodist Church. She was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants, tracing her ancestry to Thomas Rogers of the Mayflower. She worked at the Danville School as a member of the food service staff for more than 12 years. Gerry is survived by her husband, Gordon; a sister, Judith Comeau of Dennysville, Maine; daughter, Linda Bess; daughter, Laura Daudelin and husband Mark of Waterbury; son, Richard Bess; son, Alan Bess; and daughter, Judith Houston of Marshfield; grandchildren, Kate and Alexa Daudelin, Scott, Ryan and Jade Houston, Kirstyn, Keith and Gabriella Bess, Roderick Bess; and one great-granddaughter; Kiandra Geraldine Bess. She was predeceased by a son, Kenneth, in 1995. Memorial services will be held this Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Danville United Methodist Church. The Rev. Henry Cheney, pastor, will officiate. Family committal services will be held in May at Danville Green Cemetery. , age 74, of St. Johnsbury, died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at the Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndonville. The daughter of Leroy C. and Martha (Kendall) Nelson, she was born May 15, 1929, in Ryegate. Della was a registered nurse; she was one of the last four to graduate from Brightlook School of Nursing. Della was employed at Brightlook Hospital until its closing. She then worked for Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital and New Move. She married Wayne H. Heywood, July 1, 1951. Della enjoyed golf, bingo, casinos, camping, traveling, crafts, photography and helping others. Della is survived by her husband, Wayne of St. Johnsbury; two sons, Kerry Wayne and his wife Terri of Warwick, R.I., Myron Dee and his wife Jeannie of St. Johnsbury; a daughter, Linda Rose Brown and her husband Richard of Orwell; two sisters, Martha N. Sayers and her husband Scott of Piermont, N.H., Priscilla N. Melahan and her husband John of Bradford; a brother-in-law, Hugh Elder of Ryegate Corner; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. , 89, of St. Johnsbury, died Sunday at the St. Johnsbury Health and Rehab Center. An attorney in St. Johnsbury for 48 years, Mr. Swainbank was also a town official for many years. Born in New Bedford, Mass., in 1914, Mr. Swainbank graduated from Ware (Mass.) High School and Amherst College, receiving his degree in 1937. He received his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1940. He married Louise Robinson in June 1941. He began his law career in Brattleboro, Vt., but soon left to serve in the Navy during World War II. He served as a communications officer in the Pacific for three years. After the war, he moved to St. Johnsbury in 1945 to resume his law career in the firm of Sterry R. Waterman. He set up his own practice in 1949 and continued to practice law until fully retiring in 1993. Practicing alone during much of that time, he eventually was joined by a number of law clerks and associates, and was in partnership with attorneys Peter Morrissette and William Neylon at the time of his retirement. As a town official, Mr. Swainbank served as a municipal judge from 1948-1951, as a selectman from 1954-1960, as town attorney from 1960-1972 and for many years as town moderator. In addition, he served on the boards of a number of area charitable institutions, including the March of Dimes, the Fresh Air Fund, the St. Johnsbury Development Fund, Sunset Home and the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum. He was a founder and director of Caledonia Home Health. He belonged to the Kiwanis Club for 20 years, and was also a member of Synapse, a men's discussion group. Active in the Republican Party, Mr. Swainbank served briefly as assistant secretary of the Vermont Senate in 1955. He was chairman of the Republican town committee and served as a delegate for Dwight D. Eisenhower at the 1952 Republican Convention in Chicago. Mr. Swainbank had a lifelong interest in art. As a trustee of the Athenaeum, he helped oversee the gallery's collection and enjoyed collecting paintings, most of which he found in antique stores around New England. His other sideline was harness horse racing. He enjoyed attending county fairs and New England parimutuel tracks. From 1969-1980, he owned a succession of trotting horses which he enjoyed watching at tracks in New England and New York. After retiring, he spent winters in Pompano Beach, Fla., where he was a regular at Pompano Race Track. Mr. Swainbank is survived by his wife, Louise of St. Johnsbury; a brother, Hugh of Woodbury, Conn.; and four children, Jay of Craftsbury, Anne Brooks of Whitefish Bay, Wis., Dan of Lebanon, N.H., and Joe of St. Johnsbury; as well as eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service for John Swainbank will be held Saturday, Jan. 24, at 2 p.m., at the North Congregational Church, Main Street, St. Johnsbury. , 85, died Jan. 20, 2004, at the Holiday House in St. Albans, Vt. She was born in Tomifobia, Quebec, Canada, June 21, 1918, the daughter of Mack and Kathleen (Scholes) Derick. Dorothy worked 14 years for her father in the Derick Studio of Photography in Orleans, Vt., and later worked in the Orleans Elementary School office for 16 years. A member of the Orleans Federated Church, she worked on several church committees and taught Sunday school for over 20 years. She was active in 4-H leadership on local, county and state levels, and also served on the county and state IFYE (International Farm Youth Exchange) committee. for many years she was a strong supporter of the arts and crafts fair held in Newport, Vt. On Jan. 22, 1950, she married Robert F. Coffin, who predeceased her in 1958. Survivors include her children, a son, John T. Coffin and his companion Ann Mills of Peacham, a daughter, Laura Barrett and her companion Robert Crawford of South Burlington, a stepdaughter, Myra Leissler, and a stepson, Robert F. Coffin Jr.; a sister, Ilene Whelply of Sudbury, Mass.; her grandchildren, Emily and Zachary Barrett of South Burlington, and Melissa Coffin of Boston, Mass.; sisters-in-law, Myra Stratton of Sarasota, Fla., and Ruth Harvie and her husband Stuart of Lexington, S.C.; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother-in-law, Richard F. Whelply. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Orleans Federated Church, Orleans, Vt., with the Rev. , died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at The Pines Rehabilitation and Health Center in Lyndonville. She was born July 11, 1911 in Barnet, Vt., the daughter of Flora (Cassidy) and John Nutter. Dot was a retired candy packer at Maple Grove in St. Johnsbury. Her love for children and grandchildren was a joy in her life. She was well-known for her skillful handwork, crochet centerpieces, blankets and stuffed animals for children. Some of her centerpieces were prize-winning entries at various fairs and expositions. Her pieces decorate the homes of friends and family all over the Northeast. She was also an avid stamp collector. She and her husband were well-known for their large and prolific gardens. Her beloved cat, Leroy, was her constant companion until his death recently. She was predeceased by her husband, J. Raymond Conly, in 1994. She and her husband had lived in the same house in St. Johnsbury for the nearly 50 years of their married life. She is survived by two sons, John R. Conly of Plainfield, N.H., and Dennis P. Conly of Cambridge, Vt.; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was adopted into a large family as a young girl and is also survived by a number of step-family members. A graveside service will be held at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, May 8, 2004, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Suellen Leugers, pastor of Plainfield Community Baptist Church, officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Johnsbury Veterinary Hospital, in care of Robert Hoppe, DVM, 40 Portland St., St. Johnsbury, VT 05819. , 50, of Danville, Vt., died suddenly at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital, Monday, Jan. 19, 2004. He was born in Rutland, March 7, 1953, the son of the late John P. and Catherine (Vuori) Sweeney. A graduate of Fair Haven High School in 1971, Paul later graduated from Champlain and Castleton Colleges. Since 1976 he had worked for Central Vermont Public Service in various positions, most recently he was senior energy adviser. Paul was a Danville selectman, member of the Danville School Board, trustee of Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital, volunteer at the State of Vermont Corrections Diversion Program and was on the speakers bureau for CVPS. He was a member and past president of the St. Johnsbury Rotary Club, active in the Danville Fair and co-president of the Danville Chamber of Commerce. Other interests included playing golf and Wednesday night card-playing with his friends. On Dec. 28, 1985 he married Phyllis (Campbell) (Kehley) Sweeney, who survives him in Danville. Other survivors include daughters Amanda Sweeney and Corinna Holden, both of Danville; a brother, John and his wife Fran Sweeney of Watertown, N.Y.; three sisters, Patricia "T.C." and her husband Hal Ranney of Waterbury, Vt., Donna and her husband Steve Nienow of Hilton Head, S.C., and Nancy and her husband Jim Rooker of Fair Haven, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at the North Congregational Church in St. Johnsbury, Thursday, Jan. 22, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Jay Sprout officiating. , 78, of Colonial Apartments, St. Johnsbury, passed away peacefully at home Monday, Jan. 19, 2004. He was born June 16, 1925 in Randolph, Mass., and graduated from Randolph High School in 1949. He was a postman in Randolph and Plymouth most of his working life. Arthur and his wife Virginia moved here in the early 1990s to be near two of their five children. The Towns had resided in both the Woodsville and St. Johnsbury communities. His dear wife died in 2001 and he missed her terribly. He was a faithful attendee at St. John the Evangelist Church and went to the VFW most every day to socialize and play cards. A Navy veteran, he was proud to have served his country during World War II. He is survived by five children, Arthur R. Towns and his wife Ruth of Ontario, Calif., Ann Loud and her husband Steven of Woodsville, N.H., James P. Towns and his wife Sandra of Lyndonville, Gerald F. Towns of Manomet, Mass., and Teresa Johnson of Brookline, N.H.; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; three brothers, George "Bud" Towns of Virginia, Richard Towns of Plymouth, Mass., and William Towns of Plymouth, Mass.; one sister, Mildred Campbell of Provincetown, Mass. He was predeceased by a brother, Russell. Graveside services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Bourne, Mass., at the Massachusetts National Cemetery. Pauline was born Jan. 24, 1944, in Bennington, adopted daughter of Denzil and Pauline (Briggs) Whitehill. She graduated from McIndoe Falls Academy. Pauline first married Heman Welch in Groton. They later divorced. In 1973 she married Worley Parton in Barre. They lived in Williamstown and Nashville, Tenn., and they divorced. Pauline worked as a waitress in the Barre and Nashville areas. She enjoyed blue grass music, camping, fishing, caring for her grandchildren and bird watching. Pauline had recently been baptized into the Catholic faith. Her survivors include three daughters, Marie Thorpe of Winooski, Melody Harvey of Graniteville and Michelle Green of Burlington; two sons, Mathew Green of Williamstown and Corey Parton of Burlington; 12 grandchildren; two brothers, John Whitehill of Barnet and Donald "Gibby" Greene of Bennington. She was preceded in death by a brother, Philip Greene. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 23, in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St. in Barre.
