, 77, of Epsom, N.H., died Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Concord Hospital. She was born Sept. 23, 1926 in Lille Nort, France, the daughter of Robert and Madeleine (Vandevel) Djonghe. She was a member of the South Congregational Church in Concord, and she enjoyed knitting and cooking. Survivors include four sons, Jean P. Hammond of St. Johnsbury, Vt., Charles N. Hazeltine of Penacook, Michael G. Hazeltine of Kannapolis, N.C., and Kenneth A. Hazeltine of Center Barnstead; a daughter, Diane M. Fredericks of Vallejo, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Julian Djonghe of Paris, France; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sons, Joey H. and Thomas R. Hazeltine. , 75, of Lunenburg, Vt., died Saturday, April 3, 2004, at her home following a lengthy illness. She was surrounded by her family, books and poems that she had written. Mrs. Brown was born July 3, 1928 in Rochester, Vt., the daughter of the late John E. and Elizabeth (Manchester) Miller. She was a loving homemaker and was a bookkeeper for many years for her husband's business. Mrs. Brown was a proud member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed bird watching. She loved to write religious poems and was involved in mail ministry. Family members include her husband of 50 years, Glenwood V. Brown Sr.; two sons; three daughters; several grandchildren; three brothers; two sisters; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 18, at 2 p.m., at the Gilman Methodist Church in Vermont. , 85, formerly of Elm Street, Whitefield, N.H., and more recently of the N.H. Veterans Home, Tilton, passed away at the Franklin Regional Hospital on Saturday, April 3, 2004, following a short illness. He was born in Berlin, N.H., son of James and Mary Monahan. He had resided in Whitefield since the early 1940s. He worked as a millwright for 40 years at the Georgia Pacific Paper Company, Gilman, Vt. He was an avid outdoorsman, loved hunting and fishing, and doing woodworking as a hobby. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was predeceased by his wife Helen in 1999. He was also predeceased by four sisters, Stella, Kathleen, Gertrude and Betty; and three brothers, James, Lawrence and Stanley. He is survived by two sons, David Monahan of Whitefield, and Michael Monahan and his wife Carol of Katy, Texas; two granddaughters, Kelley Stafford and her husband Robert of Stowe, Vt., and Molly Harrigan and her husband Thomas of York, Maine; two grandsons, Joel and Chase Monahan; four great-grandchildren, Riley and Sarah Stafford, and Alex and Grady Harrigan; a sister, Elizabeth LeVesque and her husband Joseph of Berlin, N.H.; and a brother-in-law, Joseph Florio, of New York. There will be no visiting hours. Funeral services will take place at the Ross Funeral Home, Whitefield Chapel, on Wednesday, April 7, at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in the Park Street Cemetery, Whitefield.

, formerly of Lyndonville, Vt., passed away at a Niceville, Fla., nursing home, Thursday, April 1, 2004, at the age of 79. She was born in Coventry, Vt., March 21, 1925, the daughter of Ira and Vera (Crandall) Mason. For the past two years she had resided in Florida to be with her family. She was predeceased by her husband, Francis D. Carbonneau, Oct. 18, 1999. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Survivors include her son, Donald Carbonneau and his wife Marsha of Niceville; one brother, Harley Mason of Guildhall, Vt.; two sisters, Esther Langtagne of Newport, Vt., and Beverly Lamere of Brownington, Vt.; two grandchildren, Jeff Carbonneau and his wife Allison of Jacksonville, Fla., and Scott Carbonneau and his wife Deborah of Niceville; one great-granddaughter, Anne Marie Carbonneau of Jacksonville. Friends and family will gather Thursday, May 13, between 10 and 11:30 a.m. at the Guibord Funeral Home in Lyndonville. Graveside services will follow later that day at 2 p.m. at the Vermont Veterans Cemetery in Randolph, Vt.

, 60, of Woodstown, N.J., passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at home with his family at his side. Born in Woodbury, N.J., son of Florence Cole and the late Hubert T. Layton Sr., he had been a lifetime resident of Woodstown. A 1962 graduate of Woodstown High School, he attended Pfeiffer College in Misenheimer, N.C., then went to American Academy-McAllister Institute of Funeral Service in New York City, N.Y., graduating in March 1968. Bob worked with his father at the H.T. Layton & Son Home For Funerals, starting in August 1964 as an intern. He was licensed as a N.J. Practitioner of Mortuary Science in 1968. In 1971, he and his father incorporated the business as H.T. Layton & Son Home For Funerals. The same year, they completed a major enlargement and renovation of the funeral home that his grandfather, the late Robert C. Cole, had started in 1928. In 1975, the corporation bought the Harry J. Garrison Funeral Home in Salem, where Bob served as the manager. Upon the death of his father, Bob sold the Salem branch property and became the manager and president of the corporation. Active in his profession, he was a member and past president of the West Jersey Funeral Directors Association and had served as a board member of the New Jersey State Funeral Directors Association. Active in his community, he was a member of Woodstown F & AM Lodge 138, where he had served as president of the Temple Association and chaplain and marshall of the lodge. He was also a former member and past president of the Rotary Club of Woodstown and recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. Bob was appointed to the Woodstown Zoning Board of Adjustment in 1973, where he served until 1976. He was elected to Woodstown Borough Council in 1975, serving for 27 years, 22 years as council president. While on council, he served first on the finance committee, then as the chairman of the buildings and grounds committee, and finally as chairman of the streets and roads committee for 22 years. He served on the committees that saw a new public works garage built, the former public works garage being renovated into a modern police station, the old police office made into a court office that was computer equipped and connected to the N.J. Administrative Court Office, the complete renovation of the Borough Hall and the handicapped accessible compliance code. He also served as a part of the building committee of the new Reliance Fire Hall on Broad Street. He served as a member of the joint municipal courts, which joined Mannington Twp. and the Borough of Elmer into a highly cost-effective interlocal agreement. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Woodstown, where he served as a deacon and member of the board of trustees. He also had a residence on Joe's Pond in West Danville, Vt. Bob is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sonja Jean Britt Layton; his daughter, Brittany Mitchell and her husband Jon of Virginia Beach, Va.; his son, Robert C. Layton Jr. and his wife Jennifer of Houston, Texas; his granddaughter, Peace Layton of Houston, Texas; his mother, Florence C. Layton of Woodstown; and his brother, Hubert T. Layton Jr. of Mannington. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 9, at 11 a.m., from H.T. Layton & Son Home For Funerals, 102 S. Main St., Woodstown. Relatives and friends may call Thursday evening, April 8, from 6-9 p.m., and Friday morning, April 9, from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be in Lawnside Cemetery, Pilesgrove. , 89, of Lyndonville, Vt., passed away at The Pines Health and Rehabilitation Center, Lyndonville, Tuesday, April 6, 2004. She was born April 6, 1915 in Holland, Vt., the daughter of George A. and Ida Ethel (Pocock) Smith. She attended graded school in Holland and Derby, Vt., followed by four years of high school at Derby Academy, Derby Center, Vt., then on to Lyndon Normal School in Lyndon Center, Vt., for a two-year course in elementary education. She taught school in Holland for eight years. She married George McDonald April 6, 1946. He predeceased her. She was a member of the East Burke Congregational Church and United Workers Group. She was also a member of the local and state National Retired Teachers Association. She was happy to be just a homemaker all of her married life. They retired in 1978 and spent several winters in Sebring, Fla. They became full-time Vermonters again after George suffered his double stroke Oct. 1 and 3, 1987. She is survived by her three children, Waneta H. Clifford and her husband Terry of Danville, Vt., James A. McDonald and his wife Linda of East Burke, Vt., and Harvey G. McDonald and his wife Betsy of Derby Line, Vt.; her grandchildren, Pamela Clifford, Anne Rockwell, Patrick Clifford, Casey McDonald, and Ryan McDonald; her great-grandchildren, Andrew Rockwell and Katlin Rockwell; her sister, Edith Smith Wilde of Sebring, Fla.; and her brother, George "Cubby" A. , 85, of Glastonbury, Conn., husband of the late Mary Elene (Franklin) Woods, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at Hartford Hospital. Born Dec. 9, 1918 in St. Johnsbury, Vt., son of the late Herbert T. and Bertha (Kittredge) Woods, he had lived in Maine and Largo, Fla., moving to Glastonbury two years ago. Prior to his retirement in 1982, he was a designer for General Electric Co. in Maine for 35 years. He served in the Medical Corps during World War II. He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Penelope and Thomas Cloft of Glastonbury, and Deborah and Frank Barlow of Luttrell, Tenn.; and two grandchildren, Zachary and Abigal Cloft. , 91, a Vermont educator for over 40 years, died April 2, 2004 of natural causes at the Newport Health Care Center where he has resided for the past two years. Dustin was born in 1912 in Ryegate, Vt., and was a resident of Orleans County for the past 51 years. He served as principal of Orleans High School from 1953 to 1957, was superintendent of schools for the Orleans N.W. District from 1957 to 1966 and assistant superintendent of schools for the North Country Union District until his retirement in 1976. His teaching career began in 1936 at Groton High School and Richmond High School (1937-39). Thereafter, he both taught and served as principal at Orwell (1940-43), Jericho (1943-47) and Hinesburg (1947-53). In 1941, Dustin married Ruth Vincelette of St. Albans, who predeceased him in 1990. Mrs. White was also an educator in Vermont public schools for over 30 years. Dustin is survived by his daughter, Sandra White Alexander of Bremerton, Wash.; his son-in-law, Stephen Alexander of Bremerton; four grandchildren, William Nathan Alexander, a lecturer in history and English at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., Rachel Ruth Alexander (husband, Michael), an attorney in Phoenix, Ariz., Andrew Maynard Alexander, an attorney in McLean, Va., and Sarah Louise Alexander, a children's pastor in Edmonton, Alberta; and two great-grandchildren, Elisa Alexander and Alexander Lockwood. Dustin's surviving siblings include Lucille White of Burlington, the Rev. Dwight White of Ryegate Corner, and Betty White Sykes of Springfield. He was predeceased by his parents, William Dustin White and Ethel Taplin White of Ryegate Corner; and his brothers, Dexter, Reginald and Hazen. "Dusty" was a founding board member of the Northeast Kingdom Mental Health Organization in 1963, retiring from the board in 1994. He was active from 1967 to 2002 with the Newport Rotary Club, serving one year as its president. He was recently honored by the city of Newport for his 25 years of service on the Newport Zoning Board of Adjustment. After his retirement, Dustin served on the Newport City Elementary School Board. He was chairman of the Retired Senior Volunteer Tax Assistance Program for over 17 years, using his skill in math to help seniors fill out their tax forms. Dustin was a past president of the Orleans County Historical Society, also served on the Goodrich Library Board for a number of years. In appreciation for the good care Ruth White received from the local Home Health Agency, Dad served on that board as well as volunteering for the local cancer organization. "Dusty" was a member of the Orleans County Retired Teachers Association. He served as president of the Vermont State Retired Teachers Association in 1983. Dustin could always be found on Sunday mornings at the United Church of Newport, where he became a member in 1967 and served in many leadership positions. He was a faithful servant of his savior, Jesus Christ, and was always interested in the church's ministries. Before his stroke in 1995, he was active in helping the church raise money for an elevator. Dustin graduated from the University of Vermont with a Bachelor of Science in 1935 and received a master of education in 1940. Dustin was not only a top scholar, but was active in extracurricular activities. He was a member of both the UVM track and cross country teams, editor of "The Cynic," a member of Lambda Iota Fraternity, and the Vermont Christian Association, etc. Dustin loved learning and spent many free moments reading in the UVM library. As an educator, Dustin was a role model, sharing his enthusiasm for books and learning with his students, helping many to realize the value of education, hard work and character. As a citizen, he loved to be out in the community. He genuinely enjoyed people and his credo could well be expressed by the plaque on his living room wall which read: "Let me live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man." Finally, as a father and grandfather, he was the best: good, kind, wise, patient and giving. With his wonderful sense of humor, he encouraged all of us and we will miss him. The family sincerely thanks Dad's many friends. We are so grateful for the help and support he has received, especially in these later years. May the Lord bless you all. A celebration of Dusty's life will be held at the United Church of Newport on Saturday, April 10, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Martha Peck, the Rev. Joy Toll-Chandler and the Rev. Dwight White officiating. Should friends desire, contributions may be made in Dustin's memory to the United Church of Newport, Home Health Service, or the Rotary Scholarship fund.

, of St. Johnsbury, Vt., passed away Wednesday evening, April 7, 2004, at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehab Center at the age of 96. The daughter of Asa and Jenny (Cole) Hunter, she was born in the Mt. Hunger section of Kirby and grew up on the farm with her brother, Charles, and her cousin, Leo Cole, who was raised as part of the family. Her brother was the seventh generation Hunter to reside there on the farm. Evelyn graduated in 1926 from Lyndon Institute and later from Lyndon Normal School. She had worked at HP Hood, Randall and Whitcomb's, and Parker Drug Store. In 1979 her husband, Lawrence T. Munkittrick, passed away. She spent many happy years residing at the Brightlook Apartments on Summer Street. In 2000 she left Brightlook and spent eight months at The Sunset Home, entering the Health & Rehab Center in October 2001. She looked forward to Arnie's daily visits and the weekly visits by several of her dear friends. She is survived by two sons, Raymond Munkittrick and his wife Jackie of San Bernardino, Calif., Arnold Munkittrick and his wife Barbara of St. Johnsbury (184 Breezy Hill Road 05819); eight grandchildren and their families. She had the misfortune of being predeceased by three grandchildren: Pamela Bisacre in 2000, Susan Munkittrick, and Raymond "Chip" Munkittrick. Public graveside services will be held Wednesday, May 12, at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery with the Rev. John Marshall officiating. There will be no public visitation. In her later years Evelyn's sight failed her; she was very appreciative of the audiobooks furnished by the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum. , 78, of Bellevue, Wash., passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2004. She was born March 30, 1926, at home in Lyndonville, Vt., during a blizzard because they could not make it to the hospital. She was the daughter of the late Cecil Alan and Bernice (Allen) Burns. She lived in Lyndonville until she graduated from Lyndon Institute and went to college in Berkeley, Calif. She lived in upstate New York and Washington state, most recently of Kirkland, Wash. She is survived by her children, Jan Sundt and her husband Peter of Redmond, Wash., and Tom Maillet and his wife Linda Tremper-Maillet of Snoqualmie Pass, Wash.; by her eight grandchildren, Josh Sundt, Jonny Sundt, Nathan Sundt, Ben Maillet, Heather Maillet, Heidi Maillet, Katie Sundt and Peter "Lucky" Sundt; by her three great-grandchildren, Jake Sundt, Zack Sundt and Keiren Maillet; by her brother-in-law, Richard T. She was born July 18, 1909 in South Acworth, N.H., the daughter of John and Belle (Lufkin) Balla. She attended school in Acworth, N.H. With her husband, Mrs. Bacon operated a farm in East Alstead, N.H. She worked for Abbott Equipment in Bellows Falls, Vt. and for Hood Egg Plant in Walpole, N.H. She was a member of the Warrens Pond Grange in East Alstead for many years. Mrs. Bacon was the widow of James F. Bacon who died in 1962. She is survived by one daughter, Audrey Cannon of East Alstead; two sons, Romaine Bacon and wife Margaret of St. Johnsbury, Vt., and Gerald Bacon of Mineral Bluff, Ga; one brother, Elmer Balla and wife Florence of Venice, Fla.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-granchildren; nieces and nephews. There will be a funeral service with pastor Russell Allen at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 15, in Bellows Falls, Vt. Burial will follow the service in the West Cemetery, East Alstead, N.H.

, 77, of Darling Road in Woodsville, N.H. died on April 9, 2004, at Concord Hospital in Concord, N.H. He was born Aug. 3, 1926 in St. Johnsbury, a son of Oren and Eva (Darling) Beckley. Mr. Beckley graduated from Wells River High School and served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked for the Boston and Maine Railroad for 40 years as a brakeman and conductor, retiring in 1987. He was a member of Grafton-Kane Lodge F & AM and the Groveton American Legion. Norman loved fishing, hunting, camping and his Harley motorcycles. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joyce (Tyler) Beckley of Woodsville, N.H.; two sons, Jon T. Beckley and Joel H. Beckley, both of Woodsville; one daughter, Karen J. Fagnant of Piermont, N.H.; seven grandchildren; one sister, Sandra Romberger of Mineral Ridge, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one sister, Barbara A. Ruppert, who died Nov. 15, 1998. It was his wish that there be no services.
