, 43, of 121 Finney Drive, Lyndonville, Vt., died Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., after a courageous and lengthy battle with cancer. She was born Feb. 2, 1961, in Montague, Mass., the daughter of Paul and Maryann (Gaudry) Socquet Sr. She attended local schools in Turner Falls and was a graduate of TFHS, Class of 1979. Mrs. Mayers started as a part-time employee at JCPenney store in Greenfield in 1977. She continued her career as a trainee at JCPenney in Greenfield until 1985; then became merchandise manager in Bennington, Vt., from 1985-1991; in Sturbridge, Mass., from 1991-1995; and in Latham, N.Y., from 1995-1996. From 1996-1998 she was the operations and personnel manager in Johnson City, N.Y.; from 1998-1999, she was the district operations and personnel manager in Clifton Park, N.Y. In 1999, she became store manager in St. Johnsbury, Vt., where she worked until present. She led this store to Chairman's Awards in 2001, 2002 and 2003. She was presented the Women of Achievement Award for the Professional Business Women's Organization. She was a volunteer for the United Way of St. Johnsbury, Vt., and was active in the Girl Scouts of America, Upward Bound, Hand to Hand, Warm the Children and the Lyndonville Fire Department. She was a member of the St. Johnsbury Rotary Club and was Rotarian of the Year in 2001. Besides her parents, Paul J. Socquet Sr. of Montague, Mass., and Maryanne Socquet of Greenfield, Mass., she leaves her husband of 19 years, Robert A. Mayers of Lyndonville, Vt.; the loves of her life, her two cats, Phillip and Grace; one brother, Paul J. Socquet Jr. of Turners Falls, Mass.; one sister, Gail E. Pearson of Turners Falls, Mass.; and several aunts and uncles and many nieces, nephews and one great-nephew. Funeral services will be Thursday, Nov. 18, at 9:15 a.m., from Kostanski Funeral Home, 1 Kostanski Square in Turners Falls, Mass., followed by a liturgy of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Anne's Church with the Rev. Stanley J. Aksamit officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be Wednesday, Nov. 17, from 5-8 p.m., at the funeral home. , 61, of Fairlee, Vt., and formerly of South Ryegate, died Nov. 14, 2004, at home following an extended illness. She was born April 19, 1943, in St. Johnsbury, Vt., daughter of Bernard E. and Candis (Achilles) Doe and lived most of her life in South Ryegate. She graduated from schools in Woodsville, N.H., and Randolph Center, Vt., and was a member of the South Ryegate Presbyterian Church and Randolph, Vt., Grange. Sharon loved and enjoyed her family and friends, always remembering their birthdays. She had a strong Christian faith. She especially enjoyed visiting Clark's Trading Post in Woodstock, N.H., each summer to listen to the nickelodeon. She was predeceased by her father, Bernard Doe, on May 25, 1988. Survivors include her mother, Candis A. Doe of Wells River, Vt.; a brother, Bernard W. Doe and sister-in-law C. Tokiko Doe of Burke, Va.; a sister, Carmen D. Jordan of Wells River, Vt.; two nephews, Stephen B. Doe of Clifton, Va., and Matthew W. Doe of Burke, Va.; two nieces, Jody L. Jordan of Franklin, Tenn., and Regan J. Dougall and her husband Mark of Franklin, Tenn.; as well as her special friends, Connie Farnham and family of Fairlee, Vt. There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 11 a.m., at the South Ryegate Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Catherine Cook, pastor, officiating. Burial at the convenience of the family will be in Pinehurst Cemetery. BREBNER: Winston

, who was also known as "Geppetto," passed away at his home on Blaney Road, Bethlehem, N.H., Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at the age of 80. Winston was born a son to Fred and Phoebe (Notter) Brebner, Aug. 2, 1924, in Quincy, Mass. Winston was a graduate of Boston University and was a veteran in the U.S. Army. He fought in World War II in the Tenth Mountain Division with "Darby's Raiders." He was a novelist and writer. Winston enjoyed woodworking and sold many treasures from Geppetto's barn on Blaney Road. Surviving family members include his wife, Ardell Brebner of Bethlehem; and one son, Asa Brebner of Cambridge, Mass. Two sisters, Judy and Joyce, predeceased him. At the request of the family, all services will be private.

, 92, formerly of Railroad Street, Littleton, N.H., passed away at the Country Village Health Care Center in Lancaster, N.H., Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004. Eleanor was born a daughter to Henry and Marcia (George) Plant Jr. on Jan. 9, 1912, in Littleton, N.H. A lifelong resident of Littleton, Eleanor attended area schools and was a chambermaid at local hotels in Bethlehem and Twin Mountain. She was also employed by Norton Pike Industries for over 25 years. She was a lifetime parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church and was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. Eleanor enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. Surviving family members include one son, Raymond Ennis Jr. of Derry, N.H.; two daughters, Gay Blair of Connecticut, and Patty Clark of Londonderry, N.H.; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews; and a very close friend, Gladys Stevens of Littleton, N.H. Her husband, Raymond Ennis, predeceased her. Catholic rites will be given at a celebration of her life on Thursday, Nov. 18, at the Pillsbury Funeral Home, 101 Union St., Littleton, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Fr. John Fleming as celebrant. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in her memory to a charity of one's choice.

, 7, returned to her Heavenly Father Monday, Nov. 15, 2004, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center following a brief illness. The daughter of James L. and Michele (Mitchell) Shufelt, Michele was born July 5, 1997, in St. Johnsbury. Michele was a second-grader at Sutton School. She enjoyed four-wheeling, snowmobiling and basketball. Michele loved being at home with her family, and she loved being with her family as they participated in various sports activities. She would entertain others and make many new friends. Michele, we will miss you more than words can express. Michele is survived by her parents, James Jr. and Michele Shufelt; sisters, Stacey Shufelt and her fiance Joey Dwyer, Christina Shufelt, Jessica Shufelt, and Danyelle Shufelt; a brother, James Shufelt III; grandparents, Carrol and Brenda Mitchell, Lynette Shufelt and James Shufelt; a special nephew, Dylan Dwyer, who meant the world to her; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. , of Danville, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, at Mass General Hospital, Boston, Mass., at the age of 54. He was born in St. Johnsbury, Oct. 9, 1950, the son of Kenneth K. and Lorraine (Gammell) Fenoff. Stan had worked for Verizon for over 20 years throughout this area as an equipment installer. Stan had a great love for his family. For many years, he raised and showed Morgan horses and he was also a great supporter of Trent's motorcycle racing. His free spirit gave him the love of his motorcycles and snowmobiles. He and his wife Kathy took great pride in creating landscaping designs of which his favorites were stone steps and walls. Survivors include his wife, Kathy (Patenaude) Fenoff; and son, Trent and his wife Amanda Fenoff, all of Danville; grandmother, Lorraine Gammell of St. Johnsbury; two brothers and their wives, Steven and Joanne Fenoff of Danville, and Scott and Sue Stuart of Monroe, N.H.; three sisters and their husbands, Sandra and Gordon Ward of Monroe, N.H., Shirley and Pat Gillander of Danville, and Tammie and Jim Bijolle of Waterford; a grandson, Rily W. Fenoff of Danville; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents. On Saturday, Nov. 20, at the Queen of Peace Church Hall, Danville, Vt., there will be a memorial service from 2-4 p.m., with a remembrance of his life at 3 p.m. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. , of Northeast Kingdom Trailer Park in Lyndonville, passed away at his home early Thursday morning, Nov. 19, 2004, at the age of 68. He was born in Laconia, N.H., June 23, 1936, the son of John and Ethelbert (Colby) Chase. David loved family outings and was particularly fond of playing horseshoes. He lived to see his beloved Red Sox win the World Series. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Linda L. (Warren) Chase of Lyndonville (P.O. Box 264, St. Johnsbury Center, VT 05863); nine children, Debra Isham and her husband Jerry of Sutton, Vickie Lamontagne and her husband Robert of Cumberland, R.I., David Chase Jr. and his wife Addie of Lunenburg, Sheryl Derrington and her husband Alan of Bethlehem, N.H., Brenda Miller and her husband Dean of Bethlehem, N.H., Carol Jewett and her husband Arlan of Lyndonville, Barbara Chase and her companion Chuck Ridgway of Lyndonville, Darlene Haugwitz and her husband Patrick of Newport, and William Currier of North Carolina; grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Tina, in 1985. He is also survived by his five siblings, John Chase Jr. of Belmont, N.H., Phyllis Howland of Flippin, Ark., Barbara Galuszka of Illinois, Mary Smart of Newfound Hills, N.H., and Gene Chase of Tilton, N.H.; nieces and nephews; his mother-in-law, Frances Aiken of Lyndonville; and his sister-in-law, Becky Hedges of Morgan. , 90, of Fairview Street, Littleton, passed away on Nov. 18, 2004 at the Littleton Regional Hospital after a six-month illness. A native of Littleton, Edson was born a son to Clyde and Grace (Golden) Berry on June 21, 1914. He attended Littleton schools and graduated from Littleton High School in 1932. Edson married Louise Parker in June 1938 at the Parker Farm Homestead in Littleton. They celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary last June. Edson was employed by the Littleton National Bank, Eames Enterprises, Fellows Gear Schaper in Springfield, Vt., and returned to Littleton to work for local furniture stores before opening his own in 1947, with his wife, Louise. They owned and operated Berry's Wayside Furniture for 38 years. Edson was an avid sportsman, outdoorsman and family man. He and Louise were one of four founding couples of the Littleton Square Dance Club. He was a round dance cuer. They traveled extensively 36 years to dance and enjoy the many friends they found through it. He was the longest living member of the First United Methodist Church in many capacities throughout the years. His hobbies included hiking, skiing, fishing, tennis, camping and doing stained glass work. He was a 32 degree Mason at Burns Lodge 66 for 50 years, Past President of Littleton Rotary Club, Littleton Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball, The Grange and Eastern Star. Edson was instrumental in the building of the first Littleton Little League field in Littleton with several of his close friends. He was an official photographer for the NH/VT Civil Air Patrol and a member of the National Ski Patrol. He was most proud of his family, faith, and friends. Surviving family members include his wife, Louise (Athaleen) Berry of Littleton; a daughter, Pamela J. Mooney and husband Merle of Westbrook, Maine; a son, Thomas C. Berry and wife Paula of Littleton; three grandchildren, Dawn Conrad, June Butterfield and Jason Berry; three great-grandchildren, Ashlee Butterfield, Tad Butterfield and Nikolle Conrad; one brother, Richard and wife Marjory Berry and their family of Goffstown, N.H. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to the First United Methodist Church of Littleton Memorial Fund, Pleasant Street, Littleton, NH 03561. , 87, of Freedom Drive, Montpelier, died Nov. 18, at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin. She was born on Feb. 17, 1917, in Lyndonville, the daughter of W. Arthur Simpson and Ruth Hoffman Simpson. She graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1935. She married Russell Gray in 1936, and they farmed in Kirby from 1946 to 1955, when they divorced. She graduated from Lyndon State College in 1958, and taught elementary school in St. Albans from 1958 to 1960. In 1960, she moved to Long Island and taught elementary school in Brentwood until she retired in 1982. She was a member of the Brentwood Teachers Association and served on the executive board from 1962 to 1982. From 1962 to 1978, she was the Brentwood delegate to the New York Teachers Convention and to the New York Teachers Retirement Convention from 1964 to 1974. For 19 years, as part of her union activities, she organized the Brentwood School System Dance Program, which annually raised $10,000 to be used for children's scholarships. After she retired she returned to Vermont, to the Barre-Montpelier area, where she became active in the civic life of the state and local community. From 1984 to 1986, she worked tirelessly for the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment. In 1985, she organized the "Celebration of Ordinary Women's Lives" at Trinity College, where women spoke about their extraordinary lives. She was appointed to the Governor's Commission on Women by both Governors Madeleine Kunin and Howard Dean, serving from 1988 to 1998 and was active in the organization of the 1987 Women's State Fair in Barre. In 1999, at the Commission's gala, she was honored as a person who made "a difference for women." She was a ceaseless advocate and unpaid lobbyist for women's and seniors' issues. She joined the Older Women's League (OWL) in 1985 and served on the board of the Green Mountain Chapter for the rest of her life, as president from 1987 to 1989 and 1995 to 1999, and since then as Co-President. In 1990, she "starred" in a video produced by OWL, "Marion's Medication Mishaps", which warned about the dangers of drug interactions for seniors. She was active in COVE (Community of Vermont Elders), serving as president from 1989-1994. She had the knack of communicating with people of all ages, and was a board member of LEAD (Leadership, Education, Action, Diversity), an intergenerational organization which encouraged young women to take an active part in action and advocacy. She did not limit her activities to advocacy. She served the community wherever she could be useful. She was on the Board of Vermont Public Television from 1988 to 1992. She was appointed to the Health Policy Council by Governor Dean from 1992 to 1996. Since 1991, she served, when needed, as a public guardian appointed by the probate court for women who had no friends or relatives able to act for them. She was a member of the board of the Vermont Public Interest Group (VPIRG) from 2001-2004. In 2002, the Department of Aging and Disabilities presented her with the Governor's Service Award. She was a great reader, and an ardent believer in the importance and power of the written word. She organized a book group of women whose average age was over 80. Although a person of modest means, she was a major benefactor of the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier and served on its board from 1998. She was also a prime mover in the expansion of the children's library. In both the public and private spheres, her generosity was unstinting, and she was a model to countless women of all ages. She is survived by her daughter Patience Rosebery and a son Arthur Gray and his wife Donna, all of Montpelier. She has two grandsons Matthew and Eric Gray and one great-grandchild. She is also survived by one brother, Leland Simpson of Lyndonville, and a sister, Dorothy Litcher of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Visiting hours are 6-8 p.m., Monday, Nov. 22, at the Guare and Sons Funeral Home, 30 School Street, Montpelier. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 23, at the Unitarian Church, Main and School Streets, Montpelier, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in to the Kellogg-Hubbard Library, 135 Main St., Montpelier, VT 05602.
