, 83, a logger and horse puller, died at his home in Albany, Friday, Feb. 27, 2004. He was born in Fremont, N.H., Sept. 11, 1920, the son of Leslie and Mertilla (Lovering) True. He attended grade school in New Hampshire and later married the late Leora Camber. In 1944 he was inducted into the U.S. Army and served with the 10th Mountain Division in Europe during World War II. After service he returned to his family in Vermont. Raleigh was a true woodsman. He logged in the era when he had to stay in logging camps through the winter; logging with horses, cross-cut saws and bobsleds. He logged throughout most of Vermont and New Hampshire at one time or another and was well-known to the industry. In his leisure time, he loved to be with his family, enjoyed horse pulling events and building logging sleds. Raleigh was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 22, and the DAV Commanders Club. He also was a member of the Eastern Draft Horse Association, and the Horse Pullers Association. He leaves two sons, David True and his wife Diane of Lyndonville, and John True and his wife Alice of Lake Chesdin, Va.; two daughters, Dorothy Baker of Waterbury, and Mary Hudson and her husband Clinton of Wheelock; a brother, Ernest True of New Hampshire and Florida; a son-in-law and friend, Howard Hamel; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He also leaves the family of his late companion, Florence Woodard. He was predeceased by a son, Samuel True; a daughter, Nancy Hamel; and a brother, Harold Lovering. , 86, of Hardwick, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at the Copley Hospital in Morrisville. He was born March 20, 1917 in Hardwick. The son of the late Jacob B. and Gladys (Stanford) Hooper. He attended Hardwick public schools. He entered the U.S. Navy Sept. 13, 1942, in Portsmouth, Va. He served his country on the USS Arizona and the USS Harris. He received an American Defense Campaign Medal, American Area Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific and Middle Eastern Medals, European African and China Medals, and a Good Conduct Medal for his efforts. He was honorably discharged Nov. 17, 1946 in San Francisco, Calif. Richard Married Rachel Georgette Guillette in Hardwick Nov. 27, 1948. In his earlier years he assisted his father in the family plumbing business. He was postmaster in Hardwick. He also worked for Sam Daniel's Manufacturing in Hardwick, and later he was employed for a number of years at Fairbanks Scales in St. Johnsbury. He retired in 1982. He was a member of the American Legion Post 7 of Hardwick, and the VFW Post 9653 of Morrisville. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Georgette, and a son, Bert Hooper, both of Hardwick; a sister, Roberta Baker of West Danville; a sister-in-law, Bertha Hooper of Hardwick; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Hooper. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at 3 p.m., at the Northern Vermont Funeral Home, 60 Elm St., Hardwick, with the Rev. John Nutting officiating. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the hour of the service. Spring burial will be in the family lot in the Fairview Cemetery in Hardwick. , 76, of St. Johnsbury, passed away peacefully at home with her family, Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004. She was born in Jefferson, N.H., April 3, 1927, the daughter of the late Milo and Helen (Davis) Persons Sr. Clara had worked for Hitchiner Shoe for many years and later for Connors and Hoffman, lacing shoes at home. A member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliary, she enjoyed her family and loved growing roses in her garden. On Nov. 28, 1947, she married Donald Ray Young Sr., who passed away Aug. 12, 1971. Survivors include her children, Donald and his wife Sandra Young of St. Johnsbury, Robert and his wife Gloria Young Sr., of St. Johnsbury, Roger Young Sr. of Tennessee, Leland and his wife Debra Young of Albany, Stanley Young Sr. of Tennessee, Rodney and his wife Kim Young of Bradford, Lois Young and friend Walter Seligman of St. Johnsbury, and Louise Young and friend John Priest of St. Johnsbury; brothers and sisters, Mary Wentzell of New Hampshire, Lucy Elliott of Connecticut, John Persons of Waterbury, Vt., Dewey Persons, Delano Persons and Truman Persons, all of St. Johnsbury, and Beverly Richardson of South Burlington, Vt., 36 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two children, Linda and Joseph Young; a brother, Milo Jr.; sisters, Edith Checote, Margaret Knott, Marion Gillader and Priscilla Paquin. , 74, of Lyndonville, Vt., died March 2, 2004, at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital surrounded by his family. He was born July 18, 1929 in East Burke, the son of the late Earl G. Sr. and Blanch E. (Gray) Bishop. Earl served in the U.S. Army 98th MP Detachment in Munich Germany during the Korean Conflict from 1951-53. He was a member of the VFW and in recent years, enjoyed attending and hosting reunions with those who had served with him in Germany. After returning to Vermont, Earl married Alice M. Irish in West Burke on Oct. 16, 1954, who survives him; along with his children, Jan L. Rossier of Lyndonville, Brian E. Bishop and his wife Lara of Lyndonville, and Korie A. Bishop of Stafford Springs, Conn. Earl is also survived by his sisters, Ethel B. Volmer of Bridgeport, Conn., Etta M. Bishop of Mansfield Center, Conn. and Earlene B. Young and her husband Edward of Woodsville, N.H.; his grandchildren, Jayme L. Rossier, Zachary D. Zaun, Lucas K. Zaun, Brianna M. Bishop, Kathleen L. Bishop and Darien G. Bishop of Lyndonville; his great-granddaughter, Delaney J. Rossier of St. Johnsbury; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He also leaves his life-long friend and employer of 47 years, Paul and Rita Calkins and family. , 81, of North Road, Lancaster, N.H., died Tuesday March 2, 2004, at her home. Mrs. Clauss was born in Percy, N.H., Jan. 28, 1923, the daughter of Frederick and Alice (Knights) Hand. Ella was raised in Percy, one of nine children. At 14 she moved to Lancaster and was a care giver for Mrs. Ida Page. She was also employed at the Lancaster National Bank until her marriage to Frederic R. Clauss on March 12, 1955. She then became a full-time homemaker, raising three children and assisting with the operation of the family farm. Eventually she returned to the workplace where she was employed at Timberland Machines, Lancaster Footware and Ames Department Store. She was a talented knitter and accomplished cook. She was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Family members include a son, Frederic F. Clauss and his wife Ellie of Lancaster; a daughter, Anne Clauss of Manchester, N.H.; a daughter-in-law, Becky Clauss of Lake Worth, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Joshua, Olivia, Jessica, Natalie, Jared, Alicia, Bianca, and Morgan; a brother, James Hand of North Stratford; and many nieces and nephews. Her husband Frederic, and son Charles predeceased her. In accordance with Mrs. Clauss' wishes, there are no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held Saturday morning March 6, at 11 a.m., at St. Paul's Church, Lancaster. The Rev. David Rose, pastor, will officiate. , 51, passed away suddenly March 4, 2004 at his home in Peacham, Vt. He was born in Stratford, Conn., March 24, 1952. Brian was the beloved husband of Rickiesue Chartier Zaveruha, and father of Alberta Victoria and Ian Davis Zaveruha, of Peacham. He was stepfather to Angela and Steven Morton, and stepgrandfather to Alisha Ney. He was the son of Katherine Kearney Zaveruha and the late Alexander Alexis Zaveruha. He was predeceased by his brother, Daniel Alexis Zaveruha; sister-in-law, Renee (Chartier) Goss; and a former wife, JoAnn Pietka Zaveruha. Survivors include his brother, Paul A. Zaveruha and his wife Susan; sister-in-law, Deborah Zaveruha; sister, Roberta Miller and her husband Thomas Miller; and sister, Ann Zaveruha and her husband Jeffrey Stebbins. Survivors also include sisters-in-law, Lydia Chartier, Alberta (Chartier) Colby, Chris (Chartier) Larocque, and Mickey (Chartier) Antonucci; and 27 nieces and nephews. Brian was a graduate of Bunnell High School in Stratford, Conn. He pursued a much-loved career of auto mechanics with a wrench in his pocket and a smile on his face. He generously applied his mechanical talents to anyone in need. On moving to Peacham in 1987, he founded and ran his own automobile repair business, the Hillside Shop. There will be a service of remembrance held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at the Peacham Congregational Church, followed by a reception at the church. A memorial service will be held in Stratford, Conn., at a later date. , 76, of Lyndonville, Vt., and Brooksville, Fla., died Monday, March 1, 2004, at Oak Hill Hospital in Brooksville, Fla. She was born in Washington Depot, Conn., March 9, 1927, the daughter of the late Merton Dale and Bernice L. (Patterson) Hutchins. She was a graduate of Lyndon Institute, Class of 1945. On Sept. 14, 1949, she married Douglas J. Beane. Mrs. Beane worked at the Lyndonville Savings Bank in Lyndonville for 41 years, willing many positions and retiring as senior vice president and treasurer in 1990. She enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens, quilting, sewing and golfing. Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Douglas J. Beane of Lyndonville and Brooksville, Fla.; their daughter, Mary Jane Russell and her husband Gary of Charlotte, Vt.; two sisters, Marjorie M. Lacroix and her husband Richard of Torrance, Calif., and Betty L. DeRosier and her husband Richard of St. Johnsbury; her sister-in-law, Shirley Pierce and her husband Linwood of Lyndonville and Florida; and nieces, nephews and many friends. She was predeceased by her sister, Lucille Jenkins, in 1999; and her brother-in-law, Malcolm Jenkins, this past February. Funeral services will be held Monday, March 8, at 2 p.m., at the funeral home with the Rev. Joan Vincent officiating. Spring burial will be in Woodmont Cemetery in East Burke, Vt. , passed away at Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital late Thursday evening, March 4, 2004, at the age of 90. She was born in Wolcott, June 11, 1913, the daughter of Charles B. and Cynthia (George) LaClair. She was predeceased by her husband, Allen D. Amadon, in February of 1977, and by her oldest child, Dorothy Walsh, in 2000. Mrs. Amadon had worked at both the old Brightlook Hospital and at NVRH. She farmed with her husband on several farms prior to their last farm on the Joe's Brook Road in Danville. Recently, she resided at the St. Johnsbury Health & Rehabilitation Center, The Pines in Lyndon and Woodside House in Danville. She is survived by her son, Donald Amadon and his wife Leola of Lunenburg; daughter, Barabara Hill and her husband Ronald of North Danville (408 McReynolds Road, Danville, VT 05828); son-in-law, Kenneth Walsh of Barnet; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Public graveside services will be held Thursday, May 20, at 3 p.m. at the Howland Cemetery in West Burke (second cemetery on left going toward Burke Hollow). There will be no visiting hours. , 75, died Thursday, March 4, 2004, in Lebanon, N.H., at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Beverly was born Feb. 12, 1929, in St. Johnsbury, the daughter of Oscar and Alice (Lowell) Walters. She graduated from Cabot High School and was later employed at the school's hot lunch program. Beverly worked for Cabot Creamery for many years, retiring several years ago. She was a member of the Cabot United Church, the Eastern Star and the Cabot Senior Citizens. Various activities that Beverly enjoyed included playing the violin, flower gardens, feeding the birds, going out to eat, camping and motorcycle riding with her son. She was predeceased by her husband, John (Jack) Carroll, in 1979. Survivors include her sons, Harvey Carroll of Barre, Ronald Carroll of Cabot, and David Carroll of Cabot; and her daughters, Susan Barnett of Barre and Mary Carroll of Morrisville. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Shannon Perry and Ashlynn Barnett. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 9, at 11 a.m. at the Cabot United Church. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the hour of services at the church. Spring interment will be in Cabot Village Cemetery.

, 76, of Littleton, N.H., passed away March 4, 2004, at Littleton Regional Hospital after a long illness. George was born March 3, 1928, in Littleton, a son of the late George C. and Clara J. (Crowe) Thompson, making George a lifelong resident of Littleton. He was a graduate of Littleton High School, Class of 1948, and a past member of the National Guard. He was a dedicated worker for the Franconia Notch State Park for over 40 years. Surviving family includes his wife of 52 years, Jean (Ingerson) Thompson of Littleton; three sons, George W. Thompson Jr. of Littleton, Mark W. Thompson of Raymond, N.H., and Michael S. Thompson of Littleton; a daughter, Lori J. LeMay of Norwalk, Conn.; a sister, Helen Haynes of Littleton; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Two sisters predeceased him. A memorial service will be held today, March 6, at 1 p.m. at the Pillsbury Funeral Home, 101 Union St., Littleton, with Pastor Allen and wife, Flo Corey, officiating. , 95, formerly of Mann's Hill Road, Littleton, N.H., died March 5, 2004, in Portsmouth, R.I. Mr. Watts was born March 12, 1908, in East Orange, N.J., the son of the Rev. William Henderson and Mary Gardiner Bach Watts. Mr. Watts was a longtime resident of Nutley, N.J., before retiring to Littleton in 1974. He was very active in community affairs in both places and in Littleton served as a member and chairman of the Littleton Water and Light Commission, as a member of the board of North Country Home Health Association and of the vestry of All Saint's Episcopal Church. He was an avid hiker and a lifetime member of the Appalachian Mountain Club. Mr. Watts began his professional career with the American Transformer Co. in Newark, N.J., specializing in installing and marketing the first high fidelity audio transformers for movie theaters and high fidelity music reproduction. Later, he served as a manufacturer's representative for the Fine Colors Company in Paterson, N.J., and for many years for The Polymer Corporation of Pennsylvania, specializing in the application of extruded nylon and teflon to industrial needs. He is survived by two sons, Robert B. (Linda) of Portsmouth, R.I., and David H. (Michaelin) of Menlo Park, Calif.; one daughter, Eleanor W. (Stuart) Flavin, of Newark, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. Mr. Watts was predeceased in 1998 by his wife of 65 years, Alice Krager Vandoren Watts, and by two sisters. A funeral service will be held at St. Andrew's Church in Wellesley, Mass., Monday, March 8, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. J. Edward Putnam officiating. , 93, of 66 Blake St., Newport, passed away peacefully at the Newport Health Care Center, Saturday, March 6, 2004. She was born in Lyndonville Feb. 17, 1911, the daughter of William and Ethel (Mizener) Reid. She was a member of the Derby Christmas Club, the Newport United Church, the Friendship Circle at the United Church and the Orleans Senior Center. She was also a past member of Home Dem and a long-time member of the Brownington Grange. Doris was a good seamstress and enjoyed rug hooking, quilting, crocheting and knitting and loved cooking for her family. On Nov. 20, 1930, Doris married Allen Craft Brigham, who predeceased her Aug. 27, 1980. She later married Albert \"Pete\" Logan, who predeceased her Nov. 29, 1993. She is survived by her children, Joyce e. Bianchi of Newport, John W. Brigham and his wife Joyce of Derby, and Jean Carey-Dagesse and her husband Leo of Derby Line; her grandchildren, Allen Brigham of Manchester, N.H., J.D.
