, 76, of Lowell and St. Johnsbury died October 15, 2004, at St. Johnsbury Health and Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness. He moved to St. Johnsbury so his daughter Jody could take care of him until his death. Mr. Pope was born March 9, 1928, in Lowell. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He worked as a plumber and electrician for many years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Club. He enjoyed bowling, rollerskating, having cookouts, and playing cards with the guys at the Eagles Club. He married Patricia (Deattie) Pope on August 28, 1961. He is survived by his daughters: Jody Pope and her friend, Lonnie Sweeney, of Lyndonville, Karen Hisman of Newport Center, Debra Clark of Connecticut, Tina Fountain of New Hampshire, and Robin Pope of Connecticut; by his son Kevin Pope of Bear Lake, Michigan; by his brother Richard Pope and his wife, Ruth, of Pennsylvania; by his sister Vivian Nash of Derby; and by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom will miss him dearly. He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia, on May 31, 1971; by his parents, Harold and Beulah Pope, of Lowell; by his sister Virginia Smith of Florida; by his brother Robert Pope of Florida; and by his daughter Cheryl DeGreenia of Lowell. Carl Everet Paquette

, 77, of Barton died on December 12, 2004, at his home. Mr. Paquette was born in Barton on June 15, 1927, to Mildred (Holt) and George Paquette. After attending St. Paul's School and Barton Academy, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. During World War II he proudly served his country in the Pacific. After the war he returned to Barton, working at Barton Motors and for many years operating Barton Appliance, with his partner John Reeves. After the closing of Barton Appliance, he worked at the C&C Supermarket until his retirement in 1992. During his retirement years he enjoyed refinishing furniture, traveling, and spending time with his family. He was a past member of American Legion Barton Post No. 76, and a past member of Knights of Columbus Barton Bishop Ryan Council No. 2933. He served his community throughout his life as a volunteer fireman, town selectman, and member of the ambulance squad. He will be remembered as a kind, generous, and loving man. He leaves his wife of 46 years, Garde (Davison); his son David and his wife, Lisa, of Simsbury, Connecticut; his daughters Cathy Paquette and Peggy (Paquette) Cain and her husband, Michael, all of Salem, New Hampshire; his grandchildren: Hayley, Alyssa, and Lindsay Paquette, and Cameron and Jackson Cain; his sisters Marie Letourneau and Theresa Ingersoll and his brother George Paquette, all of Barton. He was predeceased by his parents; by his brother Earl; and by his sister Margaret Bartlett. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated December 15 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Barton with the Reverend Daniel Rupp officiating. Spring interment will take place at the Welcome O. Brown Cemetery in Barton. , 83, of Holland died in Lebanon, New Hampshire, on Friday, December 10, 2004. Mrs. Morey was born in Skippack, Pennsylvania, on May 27, 1921, the daughter of John and Lottie (Barrett) Gibbs. She was married to Willard Morey, who predeceased her. She operated Prairie Hill Farm in Holland for many years and farming was her whole life. She also drove school bus for the Holland Elementary School for many years. She enjoyed collecting dolls. She is survived by her children: Constance D'Anna of Middlesex, Will Morey of Middlesex, Charlie Morey of St. Petersburg, Florida, Sam Morey of Newport Center, Ronnie Morey of Holland, and Pam Starr of Dallas, Texas; by her brothers David Gibbs of Putney and Lynn Gibbs of Connecticut; by her sisters Myrtle Rhoades of New Hampshire and Lois Gibbs of Connecticut; by 13 grandchildren; and by 11 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sons Shane and Darrel; and by ten brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held December 13 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Newport with the Reverend Joseph Olstad officiating. Spring interment will take place at the Mead Hill Cemetery in Holland. , 89, of Orleans died in Lakeland, Florida, on Thursday, December 9, 2004. Mrs. Labor was born on March 9, 1915, in Orleans, the eighth of nine children born to Phil and Lizzie (Magoon) Roberts. She attended graded school at what is now Locke's Garage. She then attended Orleans High School. On August 11, 1934, she married Fred Labor, who predeceased her on August 17, 1996, after 62 years of marriage. To them were born three children: Marilyn Labor Brill, who died in 1989 at age 53, Darian C. Labor of Lakeland, Florida, and Brian Lee Labor and his wife, Suki, of Bolingbrook, Illinois. She is survived by her sister Marion Larose; by seven grandchildren; by 11 great-grandchildren; and by nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; by her four brothers: Vernon, Sherman, Forrest, and Maurice; and by her three sisters: Verla, Verna, and Theda. She retired from New England Telephone when they went dial in 1961. She lived her entire life in Orleans, the last 50 at their home on Water Street, which they completely remodeled inside and out. She was very much a homebody. She enjoyed doing crafts, including making quilts, afghans, pillows, and albums. She belonged to the Sew-Cro-Knit Club for over 50 years. She was also a member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church, where she and Fred where married, the Ladies Guild at the church, the Daughters of Isabella, the Orleans Mothers Club, and the Home Dem. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated December 15 at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Orleans with the Reverend Daniel Rupp officiating. Spring interment will take place at Pleasantview Cemetery in Orleans. , 70, of Barton, passed away at her home on Thursday, December 9, 2004. Mrs. Cota was born in Warren, New Hampshire, on April 12, 1934, a daughter of Merrick and Dorothy (Weeks) Davis. On February 16, 1951, she married Raymond Cota Jr., who survives her. She worked as a foreman at Ethan Allen in Orleans for 33 years. She enjoyed crocheting, making things for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and participating regularly with crafts at the Orleans County Fair. Besides her husband, she is survived by her children: Valerie Poulin and her husband, Steve, Sherril Dudley, Wanda Moses, Gary Cota and his wife, Pauline, Ronald Cota and his wife, Judy, and Candy Lamere and her husband, Danny; by her brother Robert Davis; by her sister Betty Currier and her husband, Lou; by 19 grandchildren; by 23 great-grandchildren; and by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Barton December 13 with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. Interment will take place at Pleasantview Cemetery in Orleans. , 87, of Troy died in Newport on Tuesday, December 7, 2004. Mr. Berthiaume was born in Westfield on February 23, 1917, the son of Thomas and Agatha (Qunital) Berthiaume. He worked for several years in the woods and for several years on the home farm, first for his parents and later for his brother Louis. He is survived by his brother Louis Berthiaume and his wife, Joan, of Westfield; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters: Marie Nesky, Rita Robitaille, Veronica Cullina, Rachel Morrison, and Lucille Bouchard; and by his brothers: Thomas, Jean Paul, and Charles. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated December 9 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Troy with the Reverend Jerome Mercure officiating. , 78, of Orleans died on Monday, December 6, 2004, in Lebanon, New Hampshire. Mrs. Bennett was born in Irasburg on August 31, 1926, the daughter of Pearlie and N. Glee (Kennison) Wells. She began working for Earl Liddell after graduating from Burdett Business College in Boston. The merger of Earl Liddell & Associates and Branon and Gage became Associated Insurance. She retired from Associated Insurance in 2000 after 51 years. Her pleasures in life included hosting family and friends, playing golf, participating in aerobics, feeding her birds, and watching sporting events. In particular she enjoyed the game of basketball; she traveled to Italy and France with the Boston College women's basketball team in 2001. Her love of travel took her many places with her family and her dear friend Kay. On May 9, 1948, she married Carleton "Peanut" Bennett, who predeceased her on January 9, 1989. She leaves her children: Gary Bennett and his wife, Cathy, of Irasburg, Donna Bennett of Needham, Massachusetts, and her friend, Maryellen Zielski, of Peabody, Massachusetts, and Gregg Bennett of Barre; her granddaughter Alyssa Bennett of Irasburg; her sisters: Marion Frizzell and her husband, Ben, of Orleans, Persis Demick and her husband, Paul, of Stuart, Florida, and Joyce Nietling of Las Vegas, Nevada; two especially close nieces, Karen Bennett and Joanie Austin, both of Orleans; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her grandson Nathan Bennett; by her sister Vera Lanou; and by her lifelong friend Kay Calkins. uneral services were held December 10 at the Orleans Federated Church with the Reverend Gerry Piper and the Reverend David O'Brien officiating. , 75, of Newport Center died suddenly December 14, 2004, at his home. Mr. Plante was born February 28, 1929, in Stowe, a son of Joseph and Agnes (Blanchard) Plante. On May 23, 1963, he married Priscilla Hammond, who survives him. He was employed by Ethan Allen Manufacturing of Orleans for 39 years where he worked as a shipping clerk and night watchman. On February 8, 1951, he entered the United States Army and served in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on February 7, 1953. He enjoyed hunting, gun collecting, hiking, and telling jokes. He is survived by his wife, Priscilla Plante, of Newport Center; by a nephew, Ronald Plante, of Derby; by great-nephews Travis and Grady Plante; and by the following brothers-in-law: Milton Hammond and his wife, Phyllis, of Newport Center, David Hammond and his wife, Elaine, of Cleveland, Ohio, and Eric Hammond of Newport Center. He was predeceased by his parents and by three brothers: Clarence and twins Edmund and Raymond. A memorial service was held December 20 at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel in Newport with the Reverend Roger Fletcher officiating. His wishes were to be cremated and his ashes scattered over Coventry Gore where he enjoyed hunting for years. , 80, of Barton, formerly of Orleans, died in Barton on Thursday, December 16, 2004. Mrs. Tribul was born in Newport on January 17, 1924. On May 25, 1946, she married Anthony Tribul, who predeceased her in 1994. She worked as a customer service representative at Ethan Allen for many years, retiring in 1990. She was a member of the Orleans Federated Church and Community Circle. She was also a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary Orleans Post No. 23, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Orleans Federated Women's Society. She loved playing bingo, traveling, and doing crossword puzzles. She is survived by her children: Cheryl Burnham and her husband, Barry, of Orleans, Broni Plucas of Newport Center, and Tony Tribul and his wife, Karey, of Coventry; by her grandchildren: Renee Boisvert, Brittany Plucas, Augusta Plucas, Eliza Burnham, Bryanna Fields, and Michaela Fields; by her sisters Dorothy Marckres of Florida and Barbara Ridilon of Boston, Massachusetts; and by nieces and nephews. , 84, formerly of Newport, died on Friday, December 17, 2004, at her daughter's house in Schenectady, New York, where she had lived for the last two years. Mrs. Gray was born on October 30, 1920, in Derby, a daughter of Henry and Alice (Moulton) Maxwell. On December 3, 1938, she married Ivan Gray, who predeceased her in 2002. After living for a short time in Morgan, they moved to Derby where they owned and operated their farm for many years. She enjoyed cooking, gardening with vegetables and flowers, and taking care of her houseplants. She especially liked family gatherings. She is survived by her daughters: Rita Fortin and her husband, Viateur, of Derby Line, Joyce Grout of Venice, Florida, and Jo Wolfgram of Schenectady; by her brother Dean Maxwell and his wife, Greta, of Newport; by her sister Ruby Flynn of Derby Line; by eight grandchildren; by 14 great-grandchildren; and by nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers and one sister. Funeral services were held December 21 at a Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Home in Newport with Mrs. Gray's nephew the Reverend Richard Whitehill officiating. , 87, a lifelong resident of Albany, died on Wednesday, December 15, 2004, at North Country Hospital in Newport surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Cubit was born in St. Johnsbury on June 3, 1917, the daughter of Charles and Julia (Cheney) Smith. She attended grade school in Albany and was a 1934 graduate of Orleans High School. In 1937 she married Richard Cubit of Craftsbury. She was a hard worker, helping her husband on the family farm, working many years as a saleslady for J.J. Newberry's in Newport, and raising a large garden. She was a member of the Irasburg United Church, the Colton Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star since 1935, and the Maple Valley Grange since 1939. She was also a member of the Pomona Grange and the Orleans High School Alumni Association. She leaves a son, Marvin Cubit, and his wife, Marion, of Albany; two daughters, Luciene Larabee and her husband, Vernal, of Albany and Marcia Cubit of Soldotna, Alaska; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; two sisters-in-law, Sarah Bundy of Vergennes and Thelma Delisle of White River Junction; one brother-in-law, Carroll "Buddy" Cubit, of Essex Junction; and many nieces and nephews as well as other extended family. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Cubit, in 1994. A funeral service was held at the Albany United Methodist Church December 18 with Pastor Nathan Strong officiating. Howard G. Conley

, 88, of Glover died December 19, 2004, in Lebanon, New Hampshire, with family at his side. Mr. Conley was born April 29, 1916, in Westmore, a son of Charles and Myrtle (Hinton) Conley. On May 21, 1946, he married Beverly Ferrin, who survives him. He founded Green Mountain Fence Company in Glover and operated the business from 1941 to 1994. The company is still operated by his son Bruce and daughter-in-law Janice. He helped promote a racetrack in Morrisville with Ken Squires and C.C. Miller, which was a stepping stone for Ken Squires to go on to become a NASCAR announcer. In 1973, Mr. Conley hosted the area's first rock concert on his farm in Glover. He raised black Angus beef cattle. He owned and operated Howard Auto Sales in Newport, where he sold American Motors products and Willey Jeeps. He also owned Howard Auto Sales in Barton where he sold International trucks, Chevy cars, and Arctic Cat and Motor Ski snowmobiles. He dealt in real estate, buying and selling property for many years. He held membership with Masonic Union Lodge No. 55 of Orleans and the Odd Fellows Club. He was a member of the Glover Community School Board for 21 years and the Vermont School Board Association for 17 years, and he was co-founder of Northern Communities Investment Corporation in 1975. He was also a fully qualified member of the Associated Industries of Vermont. He was president of the Orleans County Fair Association for over 30 years. He served as past president of the State Fair Association. He held membership with the Vermont Christmas Tree Association, from which he received an award in 1991. It was one of many awards during his lifetime, but his favorite pastime was hunting with his sons. He is survived by his wife, Beverly Conley, of Glover; by the following children: Joseph Vizinho and his wife, Judy, of Barton, Jim Miller of Riverside, California, Larry Conley and his wife, Gloria, of Glover, Bruce Conley and his wife, Janice, of Glover, Douglas Conley and his wife, Judy, of Glover, and Donna Perron and her husband, Edward, of Barton; by ten grandchildren: Kimberly Grieco, April Bodette, Gwen Choquette, Brian Conley, Craig Conley, Claudette Conley, Luke Conley, Darren Perron, Melissa Plowman, and Dwayne Perron; by ten great-grandchildren: Christopher, Aimee and Ryan Grieco, Dylan, Dustin and Denver Bodette, Addison and Emilie Choquette, Ashley, Logan and Brooklyn Conley; by his devoted dog, Tippy; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers and a sister: Jessie, Cyril, Burton, and Charlie Conley and Mildred Brooks. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., on Wednesday, December 22, at the Barton United Church with the Reverend Michael Caldwell officiating. Friends may call from 1 p.m. until the hour of the funeral at the church. A reception will follow in the vestry downstairs hosted by the Glover Women's Union. Interment will be held following the service in Westlook Cemetery in Glover.
