SAVOY: Priscilla

, a mother and nurse whose professional career spanned 40 years, died of kidney failure May 9, 2004, in Ukiah, Calif. She was 88. Of French-Canadian descent, Priscilla Jeanette Caouette was born Feb. 29, 1916, in Lewiston, Maine. She moved to Island Pond, Vt., and the following year with her father Emile, an engineer on the Grand Trunk Railroad, and mother, Matilda LaClaire, a homemaker. Her mother passed away in the flu epidemic in 1918, shortly after giving birth of Priscilla's sister, Irene. Her father married her mother's sister, Albertine LaClaire, and they had three children. Priscilla was the eldest of the five children. Priscilla graduated from Brighton High School in 1935 and went on to complete her nurse's training at the Orleans County Hospital. As a nurse, at the start of World War II she joined the Army and served as a lieutenant. She was stationed in Egypt, Palestine, Panama and at the Battle of Anzio in Italy. Upon release from the Army, she went back to school on the GI Bill, graduating in 1950. While a student she married Richard Savoy, also from an Island Pond railroad family. Richard had two sons from a previous marriage and together they had two more sons. After divorcing in 1961, she moved to Wilder, Vt. Priscilla continued her nursing career, this time with the Veterans Administration. She worked at the VA Hospital for over 20 years, retiring as night nursing supervisor. Priscilla retired from the VA in 1981, and continued to live in Wilder until 2003 when she moved to Ukiah to be near her family. Priscilla was raised during the Depression and her values reflected that. She believed in work, service and family. Her career as a nurse enabled her to experience freedom and independence denied to many women of her generation. Priscilla was dedicated to her profession and credited Dr. and Mrs. McBride of Island Pond with being early mentors. In an age when it was uncommon, she pursued a professional career. She was an instinctive liberal and feminist, and was always an advocate for the rights of women. Priscilla felt very strongly about a woman's right to choose and in reproductive rights in general, and lived her life accordingly. She was curious by nature and always read widely and in-depth. Her house was filled with books. Her military service in Italy inspired an interest in art and architecture. Priscilla especially loved art history. Priscilla minored in art at the University of Vermont and was an accomplished painter. Her children and grandchildren cherish her oil landscapes. Later in life, she took up quilting and enjoyed the many friendships that it brought to her. Her quilts are exceptional and will be valued for many years by family and friends. Priscilla was a dedicated mother and according to her daughter-in-law, Michele Bisson Savoy, "She was the best mother-in-law you could possibly ask for. Priscilla was a mother to me and was always there for me. Priscilla loved antique china and taught me a great deal about depression glass." Priscilla loved to travel and often talked about the places she had been in the Army and later on her own. She was a valued friend and mentor. Priscilla loved animals, especially cats. The family suggests donations to the Humane Society. Priscilla is survived by two siblings, Irene Moran of Biddeford, Maine, and Bobby Caouette of Berlin, N.H. Priscilla left behind four sons, Lindsay Savoy of Hopland, Calif.; Richard Savoy of Boonville, Calif.; Byron Savoy of Sutton, Vt.; and Gilbert Savoy of Fairfield, Vt. There are also nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 22, at 3 p.m. at the Eversole Mortuary, 141 Low Gap Road, Ukiah, CA 95482.
